Foreign investors have withdrawn nearly Rs 20,000 crore from Indian stock markets in just five trading days (November 4–8), continuing a trend of large-scale selling that began last month. Experts say investors are now moving their money to China, largely due to the high valuations presently prevailing in Indian markets. In early November, FPIs have offloaded as much as Rs 19,994 crore in Indian markets. The month prior, i.e., October, was one of the worst months in terms of foreign outflows, with FPIs making a net withdrawal of Rs 94,017 crore. Before this, Indian markets faced such a situation during the pandemic, when FPIs withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. <h2>Why Are Investors Leaving? </h2>According to Himanshu Srivastava of Morningstar Investment Research India, two main factors are driving this exodus. First is China's renewed appeal due to lower stock valuations and new economic stimulus measures. In a bid to nudge the domestic economy and bail state governments, China recently approved a 10-trillion yuan (US $1.4 trillion) package. Per reports, approximately 60% of this stimulus focuses on allowing local governments to refinance the mountain of debt on them. Srivastava explains foreign investors are also flocking to US dollar and Treasury yields, which have appreciated significantly in the recent past, leading FPIs to anticipate a stronger US economy going ahead. Moreover, high valuations in Indian markets are discouraging foreign investors from putting more money in the economy. As a result, over the past week, the selling pressure eroded Rs 74,563 crore in market value for Reliance Industries, while Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank lost Rs 26,274 crore and Rs 22,254 crore, respectively. The combined market valuation of six of the top 10 most-valued firms dipped by Rs 1,55,721.12 crore last week. <h2> Silver linings</h2>Despite the ongoing outflux of funds since last month, November also saw unprecedented applications of about 40–50 new FPI registrations, which are eyeing to enter the Indian market. This was due to markets SEBIs recent relaxation to NRIs, permitting them to participate up to 100% and announcing measures for ease of entry and operations in India. On the other hand, FPIs invested Rs 599 crore in the debt general limit and Rs 2,896 crore in the debt voluntary retention route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs have invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market. <li class="whitespace-normal break-words"></li>Going ahead, investors will be looking for certain macroeconomic cues, which include corporate earnings reports, India's inflation (CPI) and industrial production (IIP) data on November 12, the US inflation report on November 13, and wholesale price index (WPI) data on November 14.

Moreover, the US Federal Reserve monetary policy and officials' comments will be in focus to derive further momentum. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.26 against the greenback, registering a rise of 5 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee depreciated 22 paise to close at an all-time low of 84.31 against the US dollar. "The <keyword id="20045514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-rupee" source="keywords">Indian rupee</keyword> fell to its lowest (level) on Wednesday and is expected to continue with its fall as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allows a weaker rupee with FPIs (<keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">foreign portfolio investors</keyword>) continuing their selling mode in equities," said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. RBI protected the rupee for some time but left the protection as pressure on buying dollars was immense after a rise in the dollar index and an increase in US yields, Bhansali added. Forex traders said the rupee was trading in a narrow range as persistent foreign fund outflows, a muted trend in domestic equities and the strength of the American currency in the overseas market, dented investor sentiments. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.10 per cent lower at 104.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.79 per cent to USD 75.51 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex declined 429.83 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 79,948.30 points. The Nifty fell 143.25 points, or 0.59 per cent, to 24,340.80 points. The recent sessions have been bearish for the indices, attributable to fund outflows and lower-than-expected Q2 earnings of India Inc. On Thursday, the Sensex settled at 79,389.06 points, down 553.12 points or 0.69 per cent, while the Nifty closed at 24,205.35 points, down 135.50 points or 0.56 per cent. "We expect the consolidation to continue in the short term; a reversal in trend will depend on a slowdown in FIIs selling intensity and the outcome of the US presidential election," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, recently. October marks highest-ever monthly stock sales by foreign portfolio investors

In the 2023 calendar year, the equity investments in real estate stood at $7.4 billion. Industry body CII and real estate consultant CBRE on Wednesday released a joint report titled 'Leading the Charge: Crafting the Skylines of Tomorrow' at the annual CII Realty 2024 conclave. Equity capital inflows touched $8.9 billion between January and September, registering a 46% year-on-year growth. "Overall equity investments in 2024 in the real estate sector are set to hit a new record surpassing $10 billion for the first time," the report said. With a resurgence in investment inflows in built-up office assets and a strong acquisition pipeline for land in the residential sector, the overall equity investments in 2024 would be in the $10-11 billion range. During January-September, institutional and collective vehicle investors accounted for nearly 40% of the overall investments. Developer companies led the total capital inflows with more than 41% share in this period. Domestic investors (predominantly developers) invested nearly USD 6 billion during the first nine months of the calendar year, dominating the overall capital inflows with an almost 65% share. In comparison, foreign investors contributed about $3.1 billion during the same timeframe. Notably, North American and Singaporean investors were the significant contributors, representing about 85% of all foreign capital inflows. Anshuman Magazine, Chairman &amp; CEO, India, South-East Asia, Middle East &amp; Africa, CBRE, said, "Projection for 2024 equity investments between $10-11 billion, highest-ever, underscores continued investor interest in the growing <keyword id="23870227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate-market-in-India" source="keywords">real estate market in India</keyword>." With SEBI's SM-REIT framework, he said, smaller but high-quality assets in Tier-II markets would also present new avenues for strategic capital deployment. "We believe this regulatory support will add much-needed transparency, enabling a more diversified investment base and encouraging institutional participation across these markets," Magazine said. "Given the factors, the USDINR pair appears to face resistance around the 84.50 level, with expectations of trading within a range of 83.80 to 84.50, leaning toward a downside bias," he said. On the global front, US Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent's fiscal deficit reduction agenda capped US Treasury yields, Pabari said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.28 per cent at 107.11. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose by 0.33 per cent to USD 73.25 per barrel in futures trade. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share equity benchmark Sensex jumped 167.76 points or 0.21 per cent to 80,277.61 points in early trade, while Nifty jumped 55.80 points or 0.23 per cent to 24,277.70 points. Rupee rises 7 paise to 84.22 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: Selling pressure continued in <keyword id="20459350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-stock-markets" source="keywords">Indian stock markets</keyword> on Tuesday, following similar trends in Asian markets. <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> and <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> showed mixed openings, with the Nifty 50 index recording a marginal gain of 36 points or 0.15 per cent, opening at 24,832.20 points, while the Sensex index opened at 80,826.56 points, registering a decline of 223.44 points or 0.28 per cent. Experts noted that geopolitical pressure and the continued shift of foreign investment from India to China have added to the selling pressure on Indian equities. "Market has turned weak responding to negative cues from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, massive FPI selling and concerns surrounding the election results due today. The most important trigger which pulled the Nifty 5.6 per cent down from the peak has been the sustained big FPI selling during the last six trading days" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. In the sectoral indices, Nifty Private Bank led the gains with a surge of 0.55 per cent at the opening session, and Nifty Bank also rose by 0.5 per cent, while Nifty FMCG, Nifty Media, and Nifty Metal faced selling pressure. Among the Nifty 50 stocks, 20 opened in advance, 26 declined, and 4 remained unchanged. <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foreign-Portfolio-Investors" source="keywords">Foreign Portfolio Investors</keyword> (FPIs) have sold equities worth Rs 50,011 crores during the last six trading sessions, which has been more than offset by <keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Domestic-Institutional-Investors" source="keywords">Domestic Institutional Investors</keyword> (DII) buying Rs 53,203 crores. Despite this, the market has corrected by 5.6 per cent due to weak sentiments. Experts also noted that there are enough indicators to suggest that FPIs have been following a 'Sell India, Buy China' strategy. Elevated valuations in India and cheaper valuations for Chinese stocks have triggered this shift in FPI strategy. "The Nifty index on Monday closed at the crucial support level of 24,800, with momentum indicators in the oversold territory, which may trigger a temporary bounce. However, a weekly close below 24,800 could lead to further declines, potentially down to 24,000" said Varun Aggarwal, MD, Profit Idea. Other Asian markets also faced high selling pressure on Tuesday, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index down by more than 7.5 per cent at the time of this report. Japan's Nikkei index was down by 1.21 per cent, while Taiwan's weighted index dropped by 0.76 per cent.

Nifty, Sensex open flat despite DIIs buying more than FIIs selling in last six sessions

The rupee rose 2 paise to 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday amid a recovery in domestic equity markets and a weaker American currency against major Asian rivals. Forex traders said, however, sustained outflow of foreign funds and an upward movement in crude oil prices put pressure on the local unit and capped its sharp gain. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.39 and slipped further to 84.40 against the greenback, trading 2 paise higher from its previous close. On Monday, the rupee recovered from its lowest level of 84.46 to settle 4 paise higher at 84.42 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.09 per cent at 106.10. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose by 0.19 per cent to USD 73.44 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex was trading 271.42 points, or 0.35 per cent higher, at 77,610.43 points. Rupee rises 2 paise to 84.40 against US dollar in early trade

India could see a shift in foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the second term of Donald Trump (Trump 2.0) as President of the United States, says a research report by the State Bank of India. The report highlighted that under his first term, Trump 1.0, the Trump administration made sweeping regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the U.S., which impacted FDI inflows globally, including India. It added that if similar policies are reintroduced in Trump 2.0 also, it could create challenges for emerging markets like India, which rely on FDI as a significant driver of economic growth. Notably, a recent Kotak report highlighted that a complete Republican control over all arms of the US government would mean increased US earnings via corporate tax cuts, higher tariffs on imports into the US and greater US fiscal deficits. The first two could spell doom for emerging markets like India and China, since foreign investors will make a beeline for investing more money in the US markets, which will come at the cost of intense selloff in emerging markets. However, higher fiscal deficits will eventually lead to the dollar weakening after the initial euphoria dies down. "India may see shifts in foreign direct investments (FDIs) during Trump 2.0. The Trump 1.0 administration saw significant regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the US," the SBI report stated. However, given that India has been gradually diversifying its sources of FDI (foreign direct investments), this trend could serve as a buffer against any potential decline. Moreover, domestic institutional investors have been stepping up big time, maintaining some balance to the massive exodus of FIIs over the past month. So far in November 2024, FIIs have withdrawn Rs 19,849 crores from the cash segment in Indian markets, while DIIs have poured in Rs 14,014.18 crores as of November 10th, 2024. "India is no longer dependent on the traditional sources of FDI inflows... unlike the recent past, FDI is now coming in many new sectors," noted the SBI report. Unlike a decade ago, when most FDI inflows came from a limited number of traditional sectors, India is now attracting investment in a wide array of industries, including renewable energy, sea transport, medical devices, and surgical appliances. Data suggests over the last 24 years, i.e., between April 2000 and June 2024, FDIs have poured in $1,013.4 billion in the Indian economy. Out of this, 67%, i.e., $689.88 billion, has come in just the last 10 years. The report added there are up to 12 emerging sectors showing strong FDI interest, which could help offset any loss of inflows in conventional sectors if there is a shift in global investment patterns under another Trump administration. In the last financial year, the top 5 sectors that have received the highest quantum of FDI inflow include the services sector (finance, banking, insurance, and business) which makes up about 16% of the inflows. This is followed computer software &amp; hardware, which constitute around 15% of total FDI flows. Trading and telecommunications follows with a share of 6% each, and Automobile Industry comes next with a 5% share. In the short term, the potential for increased U.S. tariffs, more restrictive H-1B visa policies, and a stronger dollar could bring some volatility to India's trade and investment landscape. However, in the long term, these challenges might also encourage India to expand its manufacturing capabilities, diversify export markets, and focus on becoming economically more self-reliant. Notably, India has maintained a merchandise trade surplus with the U.S. despite tariffs imposed during Trump's first term. This indicates that Indian exports have remained resilient, and there is potential to strengthen this trade relationship further by capitalizing on emerging sectors and reducing dependency on traditional industries. Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director &amp; Chief Economist, Acuité Ratings &amp; Research Limited cautions that in the medium to long term, the trade relationship with the US may see a structural improvement. "Higher tariff and trade restrictions in the US with China should translate into better opportunities for exports of manufactured goods from India", he adds.

FDIs may shift to US under Trump 2.0 but it is unlikely to severely impact FDIs inflow to India, says SBI Report

In a recent notification, the <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords">NSE</keyword> (National Stock Exchange) noted that markets will remain closed on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, on account of state elections taking place in Maharashtra. However, <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords">BSE</keyword> has issued no notification on this matter so far. However, given how both the exchanges largely operate in sync, BSE is likely to declare a holiday as well. Before the elections, both BSE and NSE will be shut for trading on November 15 as well, on account of <keyword id="23718443" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guru-Nanak-Jayanti" source="keywords">Guru Nanak Jayanti</keyword>. Next month, the bourses will remain closed for regular trade on Christmas, i.e., December 25. Earlier this week, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mandated that all businesses and workplaces in Mumbai should grant paid leave on November 20, 2024, to all its employees so that they can participate in state elections. Failure to do so could mean penalties for employers. All the 288 states in the Maharashtra state assembly are set to go to polls in a single phase on November 20. <h2>Markets close the week on muted note </h2>Both Nifty and Sensex closed the week on a damp note, with Nifty dipping 0.21% to close at 24,148.20 points. On the other hand, Sensex also slipped below the 80,000 mark to close the week at 79,486.32 points. Of the 50 stocks that constitute Nifty, 23 stocks advanced during the day, while 27 saw declines. However, this week has not been all that bad for the markets, with Nifty rising 0.31% and Sensex inching up 0.65% during the last 5 days. All broad market indices fell during today's trade, with smallcaps falling by over 1.5%, while midcaps also closed the day over 1% down. As for sectoral indices, most of them ended the week in reds, with realty and media losing over 2% during trading today. Pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and consumer durables recorded marginal upticks during the day, inching up by 0.07%, 0.22%, and 0.41%, respectively. FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>) continued their selling spree today as well. In this month so far, FIIs have been net cash sellers, offloading around Rs 16,445.49 crore. DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have stepped in to maintain some balance by becoming net buyers worth Rs 12,265.74 crore in November till date. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities, explains that global market sentiment saw sharp volatility in the aftermath of Republicans winning all three branches of the US government, resulting in rising US bond yields and the dollar, as well as the US equity markets beating most EMs. Meanwhile, the Q2 FY25 earnings season continued to remain weak, with more misses than hits observed. <keyword id="20993056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPI-flows" source="keywords">FPI flows</keyword> are expected to remain volatile for some time to come.
