On Monday, the rupee appreciated 12 paise to close at 84.29 against US dollar. "While Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies loom large, the rupee's outlook remains cautiously optimistic. Additionally, a surge in capital inflows is likely to provide robust support," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further said that the RBI's vigilant stance will be critical in managing volatility, with interventions likely at key levels to maintain stability. "Given the factors, the USDINR pair appears to face resistance around the 84.50 level, with expectations of trading within a range of 83.80 to 84.50, leaning toward a downside bias," he said. On the global front, US Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent's fiscal deficit reduction agenda capped US Treasury yields, Pabari said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.28 per cent at 107.11. Rupee rises 7 paise to 84.22 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: The rupee slipped 1 paisa to an all-time low of 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, as persistent <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> and a muted trend in domestic equities weighed on the local unit. Forex traders said the USDINR pair has shown significant volatility in recent sessions, with the rupee inching closer to its all-time low of 84.40. This downward pressure is largely driven by global factors, particularly the Dollar Index's strengthening. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.40 against the greenback, registering a fall of 1 paisa over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee fell 1 paisa to a new lifetime low of 84.39 against the US dollar. "It appears that the rupee has established support around the current levels, with depreciation limited near 84.50," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that the RBI stands tall as the depreciation in the rupee seems to be limited as the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) continues to sell the dollars to protect the sharp depreciation. "For the 5th consecutive week, India's forex reserves declined, possibly due to RBI selling the dollars. Currently, the forex reserves of India stand at USD 682 billion down from the recent all-time high of USD 704 billion," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.04 per cent at 105.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.25 per cent to USD 72.07 per barrel in futures trade. On the macroeconomic front, retail inflation breached the Reserve Bank's upper tolerance level, soaring to a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October mainly on account of rising food prices. Inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) was 5.49 per cent in September and 4.87 per cent in the year-ago month. India's industrial production expanded by 3.1 per cent in September after recording a contraction in the preceding month, as all three major segments -- mining, manufacturing, and power generation -- showed improvement. However, the growth in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) during the month was lower than 6.4 per cent registered in September 2023.

At the <keyword id="20520118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interbank-foreign-exchange-market" source="keywords">interbank foreign exchange market</keyword>, the local unit opened at 83.93 and fell to 83.95, registering a loss of 5 paise from its previous close. On Wednesday, the Indian rupee fell 13 paise to 83.90 against the <keyword id="19949640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-dollar" source="keywords">US dollar</keyword>. "The rupee's ongoing decline has been fuelled by a growing trade deficit and relentless dollar demand from importers, placing it under significant pressure," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. The market anticipates that the central bank might sell USD to maintain stability. Additionally, the recent dip in crude oil prices to around USD 75.48 per barrel could offer the rupee some much-needed relief." Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, gained 0.17 per cent to 101.21 points. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was 0.01 per cent up at USD 76.06 per barrel in futures trade, Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve's recent meeting minutes revealed that most officials are inclined towards a rate cut in September, provided inflation continues to cool. This has increased the likelihood of a Fed rate cut, putting downward pressure on the US dollar and offering some support to the rupee. The central bank has issued 'Regulation of Foreign Trade under Foreign Exchange Management Act (<keyword id="19940710" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fema" source="keywords">FEMA</keyword>), 1999 - <keyword id="20399690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="draft" source="keywords">Draft</keyword> Regulations and Directions' in this regard. As per the draft, every exporter should furnish to the specified authority a declaration specifying the amount representing the full export value of the goods or services. "The amount representing the full export value of goods and services shall be realised and repatriated to India within nine months from the date of shipment for goods and date of invoice for services," it said. The draft also proposes that an exporter who has not realised the full value of export within the time specified may be caution listed by the authorised dealer. An exporter who has been caution listed can undertake export only against receipt of advance payment in full or against an irrecoverable letter of credit, to the satisfaction of the authorised dealer. According to the draft, no advance remittance for the import of gold and silver should be permitted unless specifically approved by the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>. The RBI said the proposed regulations are intended to promote ease of doing business, especially for small exporters and importers. RBI proposes rationalising regulations on export, import transactions

Preceding these two weeks, the forex kitty had seen three consecutive weeks of decline. The country's foreign exchange reserves had hit an all-time high of USD 648.562 billion recently. According to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India's foreign currency assets (FCA), the biggest component of the forex reserves, rose by USD 1.488 billion to USD 565.648 billion. <keyword id="20344434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-reserves" source="keywords">Gold reserves</keyword> during the week rose by USD 1.072 billion to USD 55.952 billion. India's foreign exchange reserves, which had reached an all-time high are sufficient to cover 11 months of projected <keyword id="19933566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports" source="keywords">imports</keyword>, according to the Monthly Economic Review report of the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, released lately. Foreign exchange reserves have risen about USD 23 billion, on a cumulative basis, in 2024 so far. "We expect the rupee to trade with a positive bias on positive domestic equities and expectations of fresh foreign inflows. US markets will remain closed on Monday on Memorial Day holiday. Investors may remain cautious ahead of core PCE price index data later this week. Rupee falls 7 paise to 84.47 against US dollar in early trade

The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> stayed on the upward track for the second straight session and appreciated 6 paise to 83.37 against the US <keyword id="19904292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar" source="keywords">dollar</keyword> in early trade on Wednesday, boosted by sustained inflow of <keyword id="20480744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-capital" source="keywords">foreign capital</keyword> and firm <keyword id="19949641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-markets" source="keywords">equity markets</keyword>. The local unit, however, faced resistance due to a stronger American currency and higher <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword> overseas, <keyword id="19950258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex" source="keywords">forex</keyword> traders said. At the <keyword id="20520118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interbank-foreign-exchange-market" source="keywords">interbank foreign exchange market</keyword>, the local unit opened strong at 83.39 and gained further to 83.34 against the greenback in initial deals. It later traded at 83.37 against the American currency, registering a rise of 6 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee had settled 12 paise higher at 83.43 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading marginally higher by 0.02 per cent at 104.90. Analysts said the dollar index fell initially as the US data showed the growth in retail sales was lower than expected, though the currency recovered with May industrial output numbers topping the forecast. Officials of the US Federal Reserve indicated a hawkish stance to continue, dousing hopes of an interest rate cut until December. "The dollar eased against the euro on Tuesday after US retail sales data showed slower growth, suggesting potential Federal Reserve rate cuts later this year," said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.02 per cent to USD 85.35 per barrel. In the domestic equity markets, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 199.63 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 77,500.77 points. The broader NSE Nifty climbed 25.55 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 23,583.45 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they purchased shares worth Rs 2,569.40 crore, according to exchange data. Analysts attributed the strong FII buying to the firm domestic macroeconomic outlook and a sharp fall in the US treasury yield. The government data showed the net direct tax collection grew 21 per cent to over Rs 4.62 lakh crore so far this fiscal on higher advance tax payments by corporates, reflecting robust economic activity. Fitch Ratings on Tuesday raised India's growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7.2 per cent, from 7 per cent projected in March, citing a recovery in consumer spending and increased investment.

Rupee moves upward for second straight session, rises 6 paise to 83.37 against US dollar in early trade

The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> recovered from its all-time low level and appreciated 9 paise to 83.69 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday, amid a positive trend in domestic equities. <keyword id="20024982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex-traders" source="keywords">Forex traders</keyword> said foreign fund outflows from Indian equities following the government's decision to hike the tax rate on <keyword id="20619608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-gains" source="keywords">capital gains</keyword> weighed on the local currency and restricted the move upwards. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.72 against the American currency, then rose to 83.69 against the American currency, registering a rise of 9 paise from its previous close. On Thursday, the rupee dropped by 7 paise to close at an all-time low of 83.78 against the US dollar. "The rupee remains under significant pressure, hovering near all-time low levels. This strain is due to the government's recent decision to hike the tax rate on capital gains, sparking major outflows of Foreign Institutional Investments (FIIs). "However, the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) has been actively capping the downside, preventing further depreciation by maintaining the rupee at around 83.75," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was at 104.30, lower by 0.05 per cent. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.18 per cent to <keyword id="19944038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD" source="keywords">USD</keyword> 82.52 per barrel. In the domestic <keyword id="19911354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-market" source="keywords">equity market</keyword>, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 291.71 points, or 0.36 per cent higher at 80,331.51 points. Rupee recovers from all-time low, rises 9 paise to 83.69/USD in early trade

The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> recovered from its all-time low level and witnessed a range-bound trade against the <keyword id="19949640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-dollar" source="keywords">US dollar</keyword> in early hours on Thursday, as investors remained cautious ahead of the US Fed meeting outcome later this week. Forex traders said RBI interventions will keep the <keyword id="23844589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD/INR-pair" source="keywords">USD/INR pair</keyword> between 83.80 and 84.35. Moreover, the US Federal Reserve monetary policy and officials' comments will be in focus to derive further momentum. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.26 against the greenback, registering a rise of 5 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee depreciated 22 paise to close at an all-time low of 84.31 against the US dollar. "The <keyword id="20045514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-rupee" source="keywords">Indian rupee</keyword> fell to its lowest (level) on Wednesday and is expected to continue with its fall as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allows a weaker rupee with FPIs (<keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">foreign portfolio investors</keyword>) continuing their selling mode in equities," said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. RBI protected the rupee for some time but left the protection as pressure on buying dollars was immense after a rise in the dollar index and an increase in US yields, Bhansali added. Forex traders said the rupee was trading in a narrow range as persistent foreign fund outflows, a muted trend in domestic equities and the strength of the American currency in the overseas market, dented investor sentiments. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.10 per cent lower at 104.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.79 per cent to USD 75.51 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex declined 429.83 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 79,948.30 points. The Nifty fell 143.25 points, or 0.59 per cent, to 24,340.80 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Wednesday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 4,445.59 crore, according to exchange data.
