As per the data by NSDL, throughout August, foreign investors were largely net sellers in the Indian equity market.

Foreign investors pump Rs 16,881 crore into Indian stocks this week

India could see a shift in foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the second term of Donald Trump (Trump 2.0) as President of the United States, says a research report by the State Bank of India. The report highlighted that under his first term, Trump 1.0, the Trump administration made sweeping regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the U.S., which impacted FDI inflows globally, including India. It added that if similar policies are reintroduced in Trump 2.0 also, it could create challenges for emerging markets like India, which rely on FDI as a significant driver of economic growth. Notably, a recent Kotak report highlighted that a complete Republican control over all arms of the US government would mean increased US earnings via corporate tax cuts, higher tariffs on imports into the US and greater US fiscal deficits. The first two could spell doom for emerging markets like India and China, since foreign investors will make a beeline for investing more money in the US markets, which will come at the cost of intense selloff in emerging markets. However, higher fiscal deficits will eventually lead to the dollar weakening after the initial euphoria dies down. "India may see shifts in foreign direct investments (FDIs) during Trump 2.0. The Trump 1.0 administration saw significant regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the US," the SBI report stated. However, given that India has been gradually diversifying its sources of FDI (foreign direct investments), this trend could serve as a buffer against any potential decline. Moreover, domestic institutional investors have been stepping up big time, maintaining some balance to the massive exodus of FIIs over the past month. So far in November 2024, FIIs have withdrawn Rs 19,849 crores from the cash segment in Indian markets, while DIIs have poured in Rs 14,014.18 crores as of November 10th, 2024. "India is no longer dependent on the traditional sources of FDI inflows... unlike the recent past, FDI is now coming in many new sectors," noted the SBI report. Unlike a decade ago, when most FDI inflows came from a limited number of traditional sectors, India is now attracting investment in a wide array of industries, including renewable energy, sea transport, medical devices, and surgical appliances. Data suggests over the last 24 years, i.e., between April 2000 and June 2024, FDIs have poured in $1,013.4 billion in the Indian economy. Out of this, 67%, i.e., $689.88 billion, has come in just the last 10 years. The report added there are up to 12 emerging sectors showing strong FDI interest, which could help offset any loss of inflows in conventional sectors if there is a shift in global investment patterns under another Trump administration. In the last financial year, the top 5 sectors that have received the highest quantum of FDI inflow include the services sector (finance, banking, insurance, and business) which makes up about 16% of the inflows. This is followed computer software &amp; hardware, which constitute around 15% of total FDI flows. Trading and telecommunications follows with a share of 6% each, and Automobile Industry comes next with a 5% share. In the short term, the potential for increased U.S. tariffs, more restrictive H-1B visa policies, and a stronger dollar could bring some volatility to India's trade and investment landscape. However, in the long term, these challenges might also encourage India to expand its manufacturing capabilities, diversify export markets, and focus on becoming economically more self-reliant. Notably, India has maintained a merchandise trade surplus with the U.S. despite tariffs imposed during Trump's first term. This indicates that Indian exports have remained resilient, and there is potential to strengthen this trade relationship further by capitalizing on emerging sectors and reducing dependency on traditional industries. Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director &amp; Chief Economist, Acuité Ratings &amp; Research Limited cautions that in the medium to long term, the trade relationship with the US may see a structural improvement. "Higher tariff and trade restrictions in the US with China should translate into better opportunities for exports of manufactured goods from India", he adds.

FDIs may shift to US under Trump 2.0 but it is unlikely to severely impact FDIs inflow to India, says SBI Report

New Delhi, The government on Wednesday eased <keyword id="19946825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-direct-investment" source="keywords">Foreign Direct Investment</keyword> (<keyword id="19946824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fdi" source="keywords">FDI</keyword>) norms in the space sector by allowing 100 per cent overseas investment in making components for satellites, as part of efforts to attract overseas players and private companies into the segment. The decision was taken at the <keyword id="19901283" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabinet" source="keywords">Cabinet</keyword> meeting chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>. Now, the satellite sub-sector has been divided into three different activities with defined limits for foreign investment in each such sector, according to an official statement. Presently, FDI in the space sector is allowed up to 100 per cent in the area of satellite establishment and operations through government route only. By changing the current policy, the government has allowed up to 74 per cent FDI under automatic route in satellites-manufacturing and operation, satellite data products, and ground and user segments. Beyond this limit, government approval will be required in these areas for FDI, it said. Up to 49 per cent FDI is allowed through the automatic route for launch vehicles and associated systems or subsystems, creation of spaceports for launching and receiving spacecraft. Beyond 49 per cent, FDI in these activities would require government approval, it added. Further, up to 100 per cent overseas investments are permitted under the automatic route for manufacturing of components and systems/sub-systems for satellites, ground and user segments. This increased private sector participation would help generate employment, enable modern technology absorption and make the sector self-reliant. It is expected to integrate Indian companies into global value chains. Through the decision, the government seeks to liberalise the FDI policy provisions in the space sector by prescribing easy entry routes and providing clarity for overseas investments in satellites, launch vehicles and associated systems or subsystems, creation of spaceports for launching and receiving spacecraft and manufacturing of space-related components and systems. With this, companies will be able to set up their manufacturing facilities within the country, duly encouraging Make In <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> initiatives of the government.

China's growth rate is projected to slack further to 4.3% in 2025, down from its present rate of 4.8%. "Low tourism spending per head and subdued services prices highlight the still weak domestic demand and continued consumption downgrading in the country,” the analysts at GS noted. <h2>Its all temporary</h2>The <keyword id="21360606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hang-Seng-index" source="keywords">Hang Seng index</keyword>, which is up by 4.22% today, has been seeing a meteoric rise over the past few weeks. Inching up by a little over 24% over the last month, the Chinese markets have been seeing an significant influx of foreign investment, largely at the expense of other emerging markets like India. Foreign investors had offloaded shares worth Rs 27,142 crore between the first and third of this month, after foreign investments reached a staggering record-high of Rs 93,538 crore in September, as per NSDL data. Over the last 10 days, FIIs have constantly been net sellers, while DIIs have been net buyers. As of October 10th, DII (Domestic Institutional Investors) have put in Rs 50,183 crores in Indian markets, almost balancing out Rs 49,305.29 crore withdrawn by foreign investors. But whether this trend of FII inflow in China continues will largely depend on the fundamentals their economy, an area where India has an edge, thanks to strong confidence of domestic investors. Viram Shah, CEO of Vested Finance highlights that while the Hang Seng index's recent 26% surge over the last month has caught investors' attention, and while this bullish trend is expected to continue, driven by low Chinese stock valuations and hopes for economic improvement from government stimulus, there lies a long road ahead. "Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) pulled out $5.4 billion from Indian equities over five consecutive sessions, ending Monday, October 7. While this suggests a possible rotation of funds from India to China, how long this shift will last will depend on the Chinese government’s ability to resolve the structural economic issues. While the market rally is encouraging, more policy steps are needed to boost economic activity and confidence in China", he added.

All eyes on China: Rush of foreign investors can do little to stave off a slowdown, says World Bank

But the question is, what is driving this frenzy, which comes on the heels of the Fed's recent announcement slashing interest rates by a significant 50 basis points? Experts explain that the most direct impact of the rate cut comes in the form of higher <keyword id="20078820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-capital-inflows" source="keywords">foreign capital inflows</keyword> into emerging markets like India. The impending anticipation of this is what is driving the rally witnessed in the stock market today. As per data from NSDL’s FPI monitor, foreign investors infused a net total of Rs 2,341.64 crore in Indian equity markets via stock exchanges, as of September 19th, 2024. Data shows that September has seen inflows of around Rs 27,862 crores in first half of September. This is around 4 times the flows seen during the entire month of August. Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd notes that historically, emerging markets tend to outperform during the onset of a rate-cut cycle in the U.S. “Indian markets, backed by robust fundamentals, remain resilient despite concerns over valuations. Large-cap stocks, particularly in the private banking sector, continue to look attractive, fueling the current bullish momentum. This positive trend is expected to persist unless significant negative developments arise on the domestic or global front”, he highlights. Mr. Pradeep Gupta, Co-founder &amp; Vice-chairman, Anand Rathi Group notes that this rate cut comes with some short-term benefits for the country, which means stronger rupee and potential capital inflows. "A stronger rupee would make imports cheaper, potentially improving India’s trade balance. However, these advantages may be temporary if the US economy continues to weaken. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may follow the Fed’s lead but not immediately. Improved global sentiment could drive a rally in <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword>, as emerging economies like India become more attractive to investors", notes Gupta. But note that in the longer term, the direction of the Indian stock market will depend largely on global economic conditions, and particularly the health of the US economy. If the US achieves a “soft landing”, as is targeted by Fed, and avoids a recession, Indian equities may experience gradual growth. However, if the global outlook deteriorates, Indian markets—especially mid and small-cap segments, could come face to face with increased volatility and market downturns. <h2>What should your investment strategy be?</h2>SEBI registered Investment Advisor Gaurav Goel advises having a thorough look at your portfolio whenever the equity markets hit a fresh high. Look, it is practically impossible to time the markets. But, as a smart investor, markets hitting a fresh high is a good time to rebalance your portfolio, so that you can cushion your funds from any significant downturn that will invariably stem from any market downturns thereafter "When equities hit all time highs, there is a natural tendency of equity component of your asset allocation to breach the prescribed asset allocation. In such a situation, on should reassess the asset allocation and shave off excess percentages from the equity allocation to revert to the mean". Goel also suggests hedging a portion of your portfolio by buying naked long dated put options on benchmark index like Nifty 50. This way, you'd be able to benefit from a decrease in the prices of underlying assets, without having to own it. But most importantly, "At these crests, its important to shuffle your portfolio. Remove the crap, low-value stocks that might have made their in your portfolio during bullish phase, and replace with high quality stocks. Shift your assets more toward the large cap stocks/index funds where the volatility would be less or towards sector/market caps, which are less expensive on valuations", Goel continued. As for traders looking to make the most of the ongoing upward trajectory of the market, Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst, Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One, advises "capitalizing on the upward momentum by taking profits, rather than adopting an aggressive stance in the overbought territory". "From a technical perspective, we have entered a phase where the market is overbought, as indicated by various metrics. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid complacency and instead adopt a practical and realistic approach to the current situation", he continued. Anirudh Garg- Founder and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS explains that "When markets hit an all-time high, investors need to reassess their strategies to navigate potential risks while still capitalizing on opportunities. However, it’s essential to understand that not every market high signals overvaluation. There’s a key difference between markets reaching record levels and being fundamentally expensive. Identifying this distinction helps avoid premature decisions based solely on market peaks". "In particular, when mid-cap and small-cap stocks exhibit stretched valuations, investors should shift their focus to high-quality companies. These are firms with robust balance sheets, consistent earnings growth, and strong competitive advantages, often found in sectors linked to steady inflation", says Garg. Naturally, quality stocks tend to be more resilient in volatile environments, offering stability and better protection against downside risk. Also, don't forget to keep an eye out for the risk-reward ratio, which becomes critical during expensive markets. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd noted that the markets kicked off the week on a positive note, gaining over half a percent, driven by a dovish stance from the US Fed. Mirroring other global markets, the Nifty opened strong and moved closer to its record high in the early hours. However, profit-taking in select heavyweight stocks limited further gains as the day went on. Eventually, the Nifty closed at 25,010.60, up 0.8%. All major sectors contributed to the rally, with metals, realty, and IT emerging as the top performers. The broader indices also moved higher, posting gains between 0.3% and 0.7%. "We maintain our optimistic outlook given the favorable global cues and recommend a “buy on dips” strategy. While there has been some selective participation from the banking sector, a lack of decisiveness among major private banks is restraining the momentum. Traders should adjust their positions accordingly, with focus on stock selection", he said. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares highlighted that after an initial movement, the index held its gains and oscillated in a thin range to settle at 25,010.60 with gains of 187.45 points. "On a sectoral front, Metal (+2.16%) was the top performer followed by Realty (+1.76%) and IT (+1.39%) while PSU Bank (0.50%) was the major laggard. Mid and small caps also remained rangebound and underperformed the frontline index. With a strong bullish candle, the Index has filled its bearish gap zone which indicates a strong presence of bulls. The immediate hurdle is placed at the previous high of 25,078 while the downside seems to be protected at 24,870", he said.

Overall, the investment through the route saw an upward trend in the last one year with the investment rising from Rs 91,469 crore in January 2023 to Rs 1,49,447 crore in December 2023. Participatory notes (P-notes) are issued by registered <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">Foreign Portfolio Investors</keyword> (<keyword id="19930635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fpis" source="keywords">FPIs</keyword>) to overseas investors who wish to be a part of the Indian stock market without registering themselves directly. They, however, need to go through a due diligence process. According to Sebi data, the value of P-note investments in Indian markets -- equity, debt, and hybrid securities -- stood at Rs 1.43 lakh crore at the end of January this year as compared to Rs 1.49 lakh crore at the end of December 2023. The growth in P-notes generally aligns with the trend in <keyword id="19979726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fpi" source="keywords">FPI</keyword> flows. When there is a global risk to the environment, investment through this route increases and vice-versa. Market experts said that FPIs started the new year with a cautious approach opting to book profits in the Indian equity markets as key stock indices touched all-time high levels. Moreover, uncertainty over the interest rate scenario also prompted them to stay on the sidelines and wait for further cues, before deciding to invest in emerging markets like India, they added. Of the total Rs 1.43 lakh crore this route till January 2024, Rs 1.26 lakh crore was invested in equities, Rs 16,731 crore in debt and Rs 445 crore in hybrid securities. On the other hand, assets under custody of FPIs grew to nearly Rs 67 lakh crore in January this year from Rs 66.09 lakh crore in the preceding month. Meanwhile, FPIs pulled out over Rs 25,700 crore from equities last month, however, they infused Rs 19,836 crore in the debt market.

The previous all-time high for the kitty was USD 670.857 billion on July 19 this year, and the last reported reserve was USD 667.386 billion as on July 26. Das said overall, the country's <keyword id="20811151" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="external-sector" source="keywords">external sector</keyword> "remains resilient" as indicated by an improvement in key indicators. "We remain confident of meeting our <keyword id="22711421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="external-financing-requirements" source="keywords">external financing requirements</keyword> comfortably," he said in his statement after the review of the <keyword id="20104157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monetary-policy" source="keywords">monetary policy</keyword>. Das said <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">foreign portfolio investors</keyword> turned net buyers in the domestic market from June 2024 with net inflows of USD 9.7 billion during June- to August 6, after witnessing outflows of USD 4.2 billion in April and May. Gross foreign direct investment (FDI) rose by more than 20 per cent in April-May 2024, while net FDI flows doubled during this period compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the Governor said. External commercial borrowings by Indian entities moderated, but non-resident deposits were higher in April-May, he said.
