The manufacturing of Ford’s popular SUV EcoSport for its European markets will be shifted from Chennai to Romania in line with its 'One Ford' plan. From 2017, the Indian operations will be focusing on manufacturing for the rest of the world and the North American market. 
 
Europe has seen over 30% growth in the sale of EcoSport, which is why Ford Motor Company has decided to move its production to Craiova, Romania by next year end. This move would also require an investment of Euro 200 million. 
 
Chennai plant used to do a round the clock production of the EcoSport, which was then exported to Europe, its backbone. Reportedly, the plant would now export small SUV to its home base in North America in a few years. 
 
The shifting, which might sound like a loss to the Indian plant, will in fact be marking a major milestone in its history of domestic operations, with supplies planned to its home base in North America. 
 "The company is planning to export about 80,000 to 90,000 units to North America, which will compensate for production for European marka few years from now. While the sales in the domestic operation slowed down significantly, Europe continues to do well and the schedules for the coming two years is also healthy, ensuring high capacity utilisation," said one of three people who are aware of <keyword id="106216" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ford-India">Ford India</keyword>'s plan.

Ford India to stop manufacturing Ecosport for the European Market

Picture Alliance/Getty ImagesA factory in Europe.<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ford is idling its factories in Europe amid the worsening COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.</li><li>The automaker will shut down plants in Germany and Romania on Thursday after halting production at a factory in Spain after three COVID-19 cases emerged there.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>On Tuesday, Ford announced it would shut down its manufacturing facilities in Europe, as the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic sweeps through the continent."While the impact of coronavirus at our facilities so far has been limited thankfully, its effects on our employees, dealers, suppliers and customers, as well as European society as a whole, is unprecedented," Ford Europe president Stuart Rowley said in a statement."Due to the dramatic impact this ongoing crisis is having on the European market and the supplier industry - together with the recent actions by countries to restrict all but essential travel and personal contact - we are temporarily halting production at our main continental Europe manufacturing sites."Ford said it would idle factories in Cologne and Saarlouis in Germany, as well as its Craiova plant in Romania, beginning Thursday, March 19."Ford's Valencia assembly and engine facility in Spain already temporarily halted production from Monday, March 16, after three workers were confirmed with coronavirus over the past weekend," the company said. "The companies, however, were not willing to implement this request. They asked for 48 hours to put together plans to safeguard workers in their facilities."Gamble wrote that the discussion among members of a task force assembled to deal with the coronavirus threat - including the UAW and the Big Three CEOs - took place on Sunday, so the 48 deadline expires at 6pm Tuesday. In a statement to Business Insider, the carmaker said, "FCA has already implemented extensive protocols to ensure the health and welfare of our workforce."The company added: "We are continuing to carefully monitor the situation and are making improvements as needed. As a member of the joint UAW-GM-Ford-FCA COVID-19 Coronavirus Task Force, we appreciate the opportunity to share best practices across the industry."General Motors, which announced that an employee at its Warren Technical Center had tested positive for coronavirus, indicated that it would be able to provide information after the task force meeting.
