Zomato has been working with Feeding India for over 6 months and now, the not-for-profit’s team has officially been integrated with the foodtech giant, according to the company’s official <a href="https://www.zomato.com/blog/fighting-hunger-and-wastage">blog. </a> Through Feeding India, donors can make a request for <keyword id="3100546" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-donation">food donation</keyword>, and the startup’s volunteers called Hungry Heroes reach the spot to check and collect the food. Zomato buys food donation startup Feeding India for some good karma

<ul><li>Foodtech startup <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> recently hired its first <keyword id="6358953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Transgender">transgender</keyword> employee – <keyword id="7853594" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="samyuktha-vijayan">Samyuktha Vijayan</keyword> as its Principal Program Manager. </li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, Vijayan talks about what companies can do to actually bring in diversity through hiring.</li><li>Vijayan, has been an inspiration for transgender women, having worked with Amazon and built her own startup.</li></ul>The pride month is over and with that ends all the marketing campaigns targeting the <keyword id="729067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="LGBTQ">LGBTQ</keyword> community. It is now time to make some real changes. Doing so is the Indian foodtech unicorn Swiggy which is building an in-house LGBT support group. It recently hired its first transgender employee – Samyuktha Vijayan, a techie who worked in Europe and US for years before coming back to India in 2017. Vijayan, who had worked for years at Amazon and later built her own startup Toutestudio, joins Swiggy as its Principal Program Manager. Her startup Toutestudio, which focused on upskilling transgender women in areas related to fashion, design, makeup and hairstyling, is still operational but at a smaller scale. “As soon as I joined Swiggy, I was made a part of the ‘Women in Tech’ group along with a Diversity and Inclusion (D&amp;I) Council. I’m currently working with the team to have an in-house LGBT support group as well. We plan to start a pride network and actively work towards increasing LGBT visibility and diversity through hiring, within the company,” said Vijayan. Indian corporates can do more Vijayan believes that what companies are doing currently might showcase them as allies and supporters but they need to focus on having LGBT support groups and actively hire from the community. However, the challenge exists as most transgender candidates do not have the necessary educational qualifications. Vijayan believes her family’s support put her focus on education and extra curriculars, which is why she became financially independent. And so, her struggles are different from other transgender women. She believes for companies to have an inclusive work environment they need to extend these policies to non-corporate employees like a housekeeping person. “For transgender candidates who have the potential but do not have the traditional qualifications (like a university degree or a certain skill) companies should put together an internship or a training program to train them with the right skills and then absorb them into the firm as an employee,” said Vijayan.

Our steady expansion in these cities has shown that there is a growing need for quality food, convenience and accessibility in smaller towns,” Vivek Sunder, chief operating officer, Swiggy, said. The company also said that one in four Indians has access to Swiggy now. Swiggy built some interesting use cases as it expands to newer markets. In the hilly city of Shimla, Swiggy executives deliver food on foot. In Guntur of Andhra Pradesh, the app received more than 2,500 orders on the first day of its launch. As it expands to cities beyond Tier 1, Swiggy is also saw that a number of its delivery executives are moving back to their hometowns, to work. Swiggy became one of India’s fastest unicorn in June last year, getting the prime status within four years of operations. In December 2018, the food delivery startup further raked in a whopping $1 billion in funding, taking p its valuation to $3.3 billion. “With this funding, we will further invest in building differentiated offerings, plugging the white spaces in the ecosystem, and developing our technology while keeping superlative customer experience at the core," said Sriharsha Majety, CEO, Swiggy had then said. The startup expanded its offerings to include Swiggy stores and Swiggy Go, on-demand delivery services.

With a reputation for catering to various dietary preferences and cooking skills, KOOK has a strong presence in Delhi and Mumbai. Foodtech startup Pluckk acquires 100% stake in meal kit brand KOOK

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Rising internet penetration, increasing ordering frequency and favourable consumer disposition are some of the factors driving growth in the Indian food-tech industry that is poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 25-30 per cent to USD 8 billion by the end of 2022, a report by Google and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) said on Tuesday.
 "Riding on the wave of higher consumption in a growing market and maturing dynamics on the supply side, we expect the industry to grow from USD 4 billion to USD 8 billion in the next three years, a massive 25 per cent growth rate," the report titled 'Demystifying the Online Food Consumer' said.
 It added that funding in the food-tech space has grown by 35 times in the past five years.
 Macro trends such as rising internet penetration, increasing ordering frequency, favourable consumer disposition, expanding reach in smaller tiers and expanding network of restaurants on food-tech platforms pan-India continue to drive momentum in the industry, the report said.
 As a consequence, reach of food-tech aggregators has grown six times from 2017 to 2019. At the same time, consumers are spending more than double the time to explore and order online -- from 32 minutes per month in 2017 to 72 minutes per month in 2019.
 The study cited peer or network advocacy (52 per cent) plays a critical role in drawing people to try online food ordering for the first time. This was followed by advertisements (19 per cent) that emerged to be a strong driver in metros and among the higher income groups across the country.
 "The food tech industry is nascent but one of the fastest growing in the country... Food tech has now made its presence in greater than 500 cities in India and with consumer confidence growing, there are new opportunities for the players to 'win with the consumer' in an evolving market," Google Director (Travel, BFSI, Classifieds, Gaming, Telco and Payments) Roma Datta Chobey said.
 Overall, online spending in India is expected to grow at 25 per cent over the next five years to cross USD 130 billion.
 The report also flagged the impediments that hinder adoption by consumers.
 A fifth of the respondents stated a lack of trust in the app as the main barrier to usage -- they believe that the role and control of the aggregators in the actual food preparation is low.
 Delivery charges (18 per cent), food quality concerns (13 per cent) and lack of customisation (10 per cent) were other reasons customers cited for not having experimented with online food ordering so far.
 Interestingly, while delivery charge was the top reason for not ordering food online in metro cities; in tier-I cities, lack of trust in apps (29 per cent) emerged as the primary roadblock.
 "Food tech start-ups have revolutionised the way Indians eat. There is now a greater demand for healthy, home-cooked meals leading to emergence of new business models like cloud kitchen and meal subscriptions. Ordering food online is now a habit," BCG Senior Partner and Managing Director Abheek Singhi said.
 There is large headroom to increase reach, engagement and usage frequency for food-tech apps, he added. SR HRS

The Indian millennial is almost always in a hurry to leave home and head to work in order to ditch the traffic congestion and in such scenarios, more often than not, misses breakfast. “They are in a hurry to leave home but once they are in the bus to get to work, they usually don’t have much to do. Here’s where we saw the opportunity to introduce a breakfast option to our consumers,” Amit Singh, co-founder and CEO, Shuttl told Business Insider. However, they don’t plan to compete with <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> or <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword>. Instead, they want to better serve their consumers by partnering with cloud kitchens. “We are not saying we will become a Swiggy or a <keyword id="6434843" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="freshmenu">freshmenu</keyword>. Our consumers need food on-the-go. We are working with cloud kitchens. Right now, the option is available in a few routes and we have the idea validated. We are in the process of building a feature where consumers can order their food choices before they got on the bus,” he said.

Shuttl's foodtech debut and why it doesn't want to be a Zomato or Swiggy

Swiggy reported that in March it delivered 1.5 million food orders on cycles. In tier 2 and 3 cities like Surat, Belgaum, Guwahati and Lucknow over 20% of Swiggy’s delivery partners use cycles for delivery. In India, 10,000 delivery partners use cycles, with maximum cyclists in Bangalore followed by Mumbai. “A couple of years back, we initiated concerted efforts to make millions of our deliveries more sustainable for the environment. With close to 10,000 delivery partners on cycles each day, we have found that in some of our cities, the average travel time for a delivery partner on cycles is even lesser than bikes or scooters,” said Srivats TS, VP, Marketing, Swiggy. Swiggy’s competitor Zomato too had introduced delivery through bicycles in February 2019. According to <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/zomato-enrols-bicycles-e-bikes-for-delivery-in-12-cities/">reports</a>, Zomato had partnered with startups like Mobycy, Yulu, Zoomcar’s PEDL among others to start the delivery service. The next mile of delivery For delivery startups, fast innovation is defining their stand in the industry. Swiggy is piloting the use of Electric Vehicles for its deliveries in 10 cities. Last year, Swiggy’s delivery partners in cities like Delhi and Lucknow carried out deliveries on e-rickshaws. The company’s official statement said that the adoption of EVs will reduce the running cost by 40%. Going one step ahead, Zomato had earlier <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/zomato-acquires-drone-delivery-startup-techeagle/article25671762.ece">acquired</a> drone startup TechEagle innovations. With this, the startup is reportedly testing delivery via drones. Swiggy rides the green wave, delivers 1.5 million orders on cycles; electric vehicles are next

The food aggregator said that it cut its losses as its monthly burn rate is down to 60% from what it was 6 months ago. Zomato has also said that its orders have gone up by 290% as compared to first half of FY19. Its customers are placing over three million orders in a month. “Our order volumes in top 15 cities have doubled in the last 12 months; while the remaining cities already contribute 35% to our order volumes,” said the company in a statement. Its active gold members have also gone up by 180%. Interestingly, Zomato’s monthly active restaurants have gone up by 177% in H1 FY2020, as compared to H1 FY2019. The number of restaurant listings globally on Zomato also grew from 1.2 million in September 2018 to 1.5 million in September 2019. This is in spite of Zomato being at the centre of a massive logout event in the last few months. Zomato was caught in the throes of a very public controversy thanks to its deep discounting programmes like Zomato Gold and infinity dining. Some of its offer provide consumers with offers like 1+1 on food and 2+2 on drinks. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) launched a ‘logout’ movement last month claiming that the business practices of aggregators are unethical. Hundreds of restaurants delisting from the app, as a part of the movement. “At the start of the ‘logout’ campaign, we had over 6,100 restaurants in India on Zomato Gold (for Dining Out); as of today, we have over 6,300 restaurants in India on Gold (for Dining Out),” said the company.

The plants grown in the shipping containers - which could include Bibb lettuce and basil - will be rooted in water rather than soil and cultivated under LED lights. The team has chosen to grow greens inside shipping containers because they are small enough to help young farmers learn the ins and outs of vertical farming, yet efficient enough to produce a large crop yield. Vertical farms expend 80% less water than outdoor farms and require much less space, they say. Because they're indoors, Square Roots' farms can grow crops in New York City rather than upstate, so produce is fresher when it reaches grocery stores or farmer's markets.Musk says Square Roots seeks to offer solutions to some of big agriculture's sustainability issues."Young people who can articulate issues with the industrial food system contact me all the time. They are frustrated by their perceived inability to do anything about it," he says. "It's relatively easy to set up a tech company, join an accelerator, and progress down a pathway towards success. It's more complex to do that with food."Square Roots aims to help young urban farmers launch the next wave of innovative food startups. Its investors include food-tech VCs Powerplant Ventures, GroundUp, Lightbank, and FoodTech Angels. The Kitchen, an farm-to-table restaurant chain that Musk co-founded, is also contributing funds. Using the discounts, people from Delhi saved ₹50 crore, according to an official statement from the festival organisers, with 80% of diners from across the country falling into the age bracket of 18-34. But they weren’t the only winners. The restaurants that were a part of the festival managed to garner a total of ₹350 crores. For the junk-food loving Indian nation, here’s what topped the charts during the month-long event. People from Delhi gorged on pizza, while Bengalureans made use of happy hour deals.
