"Everything that I thought revolved around 'how do I lose weight? How do I burn more calories?' That wasn't giving me joy at all," she said. In fact, it made everything feel like a chore, which was unsustainable. Instead, she allowed herself to eat until she was full and put the rest aside for later. "Food is abundant. If I'm hungry, I can go get a snack. After years of restrictive dieting, she also let go of demonizing certain foods and glorifying others. Instead, she paid more attention to nutritional value, portion size, and flavor. The following has been edited for length and clarity.When we think about food waste, we usually think on the scale of not finishing our lunch. In reality, agricultural waste is a much bigger problem. An estimated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cabi.org/projects/global-burden-of-crop-loss/">20% to 40%</a> of crops are lost to pests and diseases, which affects our food systems and the planet; greenhouse-gas emissions from food that is never eaten account for <a target="_blank" href="https://ourworldindata.org/food-waste-emissions">6% of total emissions</a>.I knew none of this about five years ago. I was working in bioinformatics, developing an AI-based platform that assists oncologists in diagnosing cancer, and I knew so little about agriculture that I couldn't even keep a houseplant alive.But someone who ran a commercial greenhouse reached out to discuss how <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-iot-technology-make-wine-sustainable-vineyard-practices-2024-3">AI could solve those crop-loss challenges</a>. We were using AI analysis of imagery to solve that problem, and I felt the same solution could apply here.Initially, we thought about building a robot that would move through the fields but realized we didn't have the expertise to achieve that — and that a simpler solution existed.We developed the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://croptimus.fermata.tech/">Croptimus platform</a>, which uses standard security cameras in greenhouses and fields to take pictures of every single plant several times a day.Our artificial intelligence processes these images to detect any abnormalities. If it does, it notifies farmers via our app and suggests what it thinks the issue is. Using data science, we can also provide an overview of what's going on in a facility at large, whether problems are increasing or decreasing, and whether treatments are working.With this technology, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/agtech-agriculture-industry-farming-methods-climate-change-labor-solutions-2023-9">farmers need less labor</a> and can identify issues sooner than they would with humans, meaning they can apply fewer pesticides. Every agronomist, or crop scientist, has their own opinion and will make mistakes as well. We needed to not only compile a decent dataset from the ground up but also build machine-learning models that could adapt to mistakes.We did a few things to help. First, we built a research lab, where we grow plants, infest them with different things, and record them on videos. We also hired an in-house team of agronomists to help us label these images.Additionally, we launched our product to the public before it was automated, doing identifications manually and encouraging farmers on the app to give us feedback. This helps us better understand the problem and gives us a more robust dataset. Even as we've shifted to relying on AI for identification, this feedback loop helps us continually improve our models.<h2 id="3352e758-ad33-4e8b-830a-d008ed99432c">Building relationships to find future possibilities for the technology</h2>It's so important that any technologist trying to solve a problem in a new-to-them industry — especially more conservative fields like agriculture — stay humble and develop real relationships with the people they're hoping to help. If I marched in as a tech-industry outsider and told these farmers who have been doing this for decades that I could teach them how to operate and be more efficient, it wouldn't work.Instead, I work on building relationships and trust within the industry. I approach it from the perspective of wanting to learn from my customers and understand how my tech knowledge can help them.Ultimately, this has helped me see even more potential in what we're doing. I've learned that there's so much visual data in farming, from understanding whether bees are pollinating to seeing how employees are treating plants. The vision that Fermata has is to build a new visual-data layer in the agricultural industry that helps all stakeholders — from farmers to people who sell fertilizer to pesticide companies — be more efficient.

The Brand Finance report also notes a 4 per cent decline in the overall brand value of the food and beverage sector, now totalling around USD 268 billion. This decline is attributed to consumers increasingly favoring smaller, private-label brands offering unique, personalized products over traditional big names. Convenience foods, however, are bucking the trend, with rising brand value due to growing demand from busy consumers. Brands like Healthy Choice and DiGiorno have seen a 17 per cent increase in brand value, driven by innovative product releases and strategic marketing. <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="keywords">China</keyword>'s top drug regulator has cleared a mpox vaccine developed by local drug firm Sinopharm for clinical trials which could be the country's first experimental dose to battle the deadly disease. The domestic vaccine candidate, created by the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products and administered by Sinopharm, is expected to play an important role in preventing and controlling mpox infections, the company said in a statement released on Monday afternoon. There is currently no approved mpox vaccine in China. Globally, a few vaccines have been approved in the United States, Canada, the European Union, Japan and Russia. In China, a vaccine candidate typically goes through three phases of clinical trials before gaining market approval. The process can take years, even decades. However, the National Medical Products Administration, China's top drug regulator, has launched a number of accelerated or streamlined channels to facilitate applications of novel drugs and vaccines or those in urgent need, state-run China Daily reported on Tuesday. According to the company, the new vaccine is a replication-deficient vaccine based on a strain called MVA. The description is the same as <keyword id="22925756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jynneos" source="keywords">Jynneos</keyword>, the world's first mpox vaccine approved by the <keyword id="20256595" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-and-drug-administration" source="keywords">Food and Drug Administration</keyword> in the United States in 2019. Previously, in July 2022, the WHO declared a global emergency but then lifted it in May last year because of a sustained decline in international cases. China reported its first imported case in September 2022 and the first domestic case in June last year. She started to split her time between the two teams, doing half thrower practices and half sprint ones.Both involved a pretty rigorous schedule with daily workouts, but the sprint workouts involved running, while throwing practice did not. The first year was tough, both physically and socially. Changing teams was out of the norm, and people on both teams whispered to each other and gave her the side eye, she said. But it gave Bertrand a real sense of purpose and self-respect, which made it rewarding.By the spring of 2017, she had lost 75 pounds without actively trying. She said that running two to three times a week caused her to burn way more calories than before and become a faster runner."I felt so proud of myself for finding something that I actually liked doing that was starting to work," she said.When Bertrand returned to her healthcare provider in 2017, the doctor was surprised she had lost so much weight. "I recall the doctor asking me what I did. It was such a drastically different reaction," she said.She went on to join the Michigan State University track and field team as a hammer thrower, and now that she's out of college, she still works out every day. Her family would often order pizza for dinner and eat it late in the evening.When she decided to lose weight, she began to notice how other people ate. One of her best friends was Lebanese, and both of her parents were doctors. She noticed that their family had really different eating habits from hers, such as eating together at 6 p.m. and eating smaller portions off of smaller plates than Bertrand's family did.They also mainly ate a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mediterrean-diet-healthiest-best-overall-2024-1">Mediterranean-style diet,</a> which consisted of beans, fresh vegetables, fish, and grains. "Some days they would have Greek food, or they would have Mediterranean food, or they would do burgers, but again, their portion size would be really reasonable," she said.Bertrand asked her mom, who was buying the groceries at the time, to stock up on some more fresh produce. And she started thinking more about portion control. "That was something that was very doable for me. It was very actionable because all I have to do is grab a smaller plate," she said. That meant she wouldn't overload her plate and would naturally eat less without tracking her food."Over time, my adjustments became less about needing to look a certain way and more so about wanting to feel a certain way. I want to feel good in my body. I want to feel confident," she said."I think what made the journey so successful is I stopped caring about what I looked like, what I looked like became a byproduct of me falling in love with the journey."
