An Indian researcher in the US has developed a small and low-cost acidity sensor that can tell in real time when food has spoiled. The <keyword id="16846257" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="flexible-ph-sensor" source="Orion">flexible pH sensor</keyword> is just two millimetres in length and 10 millimetres wide, making it possible to incorporate the device into current food packaging methods, such as plastic wrapping. Industries typically use much bulkier metres - roughly one inch long by five inches tall - to measure pH levels or how acidic or basic the food is, so they are not suitable to be included in every package of food to monitor its freshness in real time. "The pH sensors we developed work like a small wireless radio-frequency identification device - similar to what you find inside your luggage tag after it has been checked at airports," said Khengdauliu Chawang, a PhD student at the Southern Methodist University in Texas, US, who created the device. "Every time a food package with our device passes a checkpoint, such as <keyword id="16846077" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shipping-logistics" botkeyword="" source="ET" sourcekeytype="COMPANY" meta.keywordsubtype="EQ" meta.aliasname="shipping logistics" meta.entityname="Shreyas Shipping &amp; Logistics Ltd." meta.entityid="8578" meta.seoname="shreyas-shipping-logistics-ltd">shipping logistics</keyword> centres, harbours, gates or supermarkets' entrances, they could get scanned and the data could be sent back to a server tracking their pH levels," Chawang said in a statement by the university. Such configuration, Chawang said, would allow continuous pH monitoring and accurately detect freshness limits along the entire journey -- from farms to consumers' houses. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, roughly 1.3 billion metric tonnes of food produced around the world goes to waste every year. Creating the device was personal for Chawang, who is originally from Nagaland where the population relies heavily on agricultural crops. "Food waste in Nagaland means undernourished children and extra fieldwork for the elderly to compensate for the loss," Chawang said. "The need to prevent food waste motivated me to think of a device that is not expensive or labour-intensive to develop, is disposable and can detect freshness levels." Not only does food waste contribute to food insecurity and lost profits to food manufacturers, but food wastage is also bad for the environment, the researcher noted. Food freshness level is directly correlated to pH levels, Chawang explained. For example, food with a pH level higher than the normal range indicates spoiled food, as fungi and bacteria thrive in high-pH environments. Sudden pH changes in food storage during production and shipping can indicate possible food spoilage. The pH level is measured by the concentration of hydrogen ions found in a substance or solution. The latest pH sensor has successfully been tested on food items like fish, fruits, milk and honey, Chawang said. The sensor is made with a very small amount of biocompatible materials and uses printing technologies on flexible films. "The entire process is similar to printing newspapers. The processing does not require expensive equipment or semiconductor cleanroom environment. Thus, the costs are low and make the sensor disposable," said J C Chiao, a professor at the university, who helped in the development of the device. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer's (IEEE) Big Ideas competition at the 2022 IEEE Sensors Conference honoured Chawang with the Best Women-owned Business Pitch for her invention, the university added. A tiny sensor developed by Indian researcher can now tell if food is spoiled, real-time

The <a href="https://www.scientific.net/KEM.922.79">research</a> is led by the University of the West of Scotland, Integrated Graphene Ltd, and is supported by the National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland (NMIS) Industry Doctorate Programme in Advanced Manufacturing and Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering with an aim to develop sensors that can improve robot motor skills and feedback by using pressure sensors that provide accurate haptic feedback. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Graphene is being used" comment="subhead" text="Graphene is being used">Graphene is being used</cmsannotation> Because of its unique properties, the sensors are made from 3D graphene, one of the most promising nanomaterials. Graphene is the thinnest but strongest material that conducts heat better than any other material. Also, it is an excellent conductor of electricity and is optically transparent yet so dense, making it impermeable to gases. Sensors made from 3D graphene offer unique capabilities when put under mechanical stress as these sensors use a piezoresistive approach - when a material is put under pressure, it changes its electric resistance and adapts to changes in surrounding such as light. The co-founder and chief scientific officer at Integrated Graphene, Marco Caffio said, “our novel 3D graphene foam can mimic the sensitivity and feedback of human touch, which could have a transformative impact on how robotics can be used for a whole range of real-world applications from surgery to precision manufacturing.” Professor Des Gibson, the project’s principal investigator, says that the robotic industry has seen remarkable progress and transformation over the past few years. Still, the system frequently fails to carry out specific tasks due to a lack of accurate sensors. Further, Gibson added, “our collaboration with Integrated Graphene Ltd has led to the development of advanced pressure sensor technology, which could help transform robotic systems.” The project’s next stage will focus on improving the sensor’s sensitivity before expanding its application and use cases. Scientists are working to enhance motor skills for prosthetics using advanced 3D sensors

Worried whether your cough, sore throat and congestion is Covid-19 or flu? A new ultra-thin sensor may help you understand in just 10 seconds. Scientists from the <keyword id="159191" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-texas" source="Orion">University of Texas</keyword> at Austin used a single-atom-thick nanomaterial to build a device that can simultaneously detect the presence of the viruses that cause Covid-19 and the flu -- at much lower levels and much more quickly than conventional tests for either. They presented their results at the ongoing spring meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in the US. The symptoms of both flu and Covid-19 overlap considerably, making it difficult to distinguish between them, said <keyword id="16974926" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deji-akinwande" source="Orion">Deji Akinwande</keyword>, from the varsity. "When both of these viruses are circulating together as they did earlier this winter, it would be immensely useful to have a sensor that can simultaneously detect whether you have <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword>, flu, none of the above or both," he said. Akinwande stated that the device he and colleagues are developing could be modified to test for other infections as well. The team constructed the Covid-19 and flu sensor using graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice pattern. Its extreme thinness renders graphene highly sensitive to any electrical changes in its environment. To build the infection sensor, the researchers had to make graphene respond to the presence of viral protein. To do so, they looked to the immune system, which produces antibodies that are fine-tuned to recognise and latch onto particular pathogens. The researchers then linked antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, and against the flu virus to graphene. When a sample from an infected person is placed on the sensor, these antibodies bind to their target proteins, prompting a change in the electrical current. They tested the sensor using proteins from these active flu or SARS-CoV-2 viruses delivered in fluid intended to resemble saliva. Their results indicated that not only could the sensor detect the presence of the proteins, it could do so when they were present at extremely low quantities. This sensitivity suggested the sensor could be used for detecting the much more sparse viral particles found in breath, Akinwande said. The sensor also worked quickly, returning results within about 10 seconds of dropping in a sample, he said. By comparison, conventional Covid-19 tests can take minutes or hours, depending on the type, and a dual Covid and flu test recently authorised by the <keyword id="6356255" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-food-and-drug-administration" source="Orion">US Food and Drug Administration</keyword> takes about half an hour to produce results. Akinwande and his team are now working to improve its performance further, including by expanding the slate of viruses it can detect. Washington: A team led by an Indian-origin scientist has developed a rapid, <keyword id="10402460" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ultrasensitive-covid-19-test">ultrasensitive Covid-19 test</keyword> using a paper-based <keyword id="10402462" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electrochemical-sensor">electrochemical sensor</keyword> that can detect the presence of the novel coronavirus in less than five minutes. The researchers from the University of Illinois in the US created a graphene-based <keyword id="10402461" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electrochemical-biosensor">electrochemical biosensor</keyword> with an electrical read-out setup to selectively detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material. According to the research published in the journal ACS Nano, there are two components to this biosensor: a platform to measure an electrical read-out and probes to detect the presence of viral RNA. To create the platform, the researchers led by professor Dipanjan Pan first coated filter paper with a layer of graphene nanoplatelets to create a conductive film. They then placed a <keyword id="10403665" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-electrode">gold electrode</keyword> with a predefined design on top of the graphene as a contact pad for electrical readout. Both gold and graphene have high sensitivity and conductivity which makes this platform ultrasensitive to detect changes in electrical signals, the researchers noted. "Graphene exhibits unique mechanical and electrochemical properties that make it ideal for the development of sensitive electrochemical sensors," said Maha Alafeef, a graduate student at the University of Illinois Grainger College of Engineering. Current RNA-based Covid-19 tests screen for the presence of the N-gene (nucleocapsid phosphoprotein) on the SARS-CoV-2 virus, they said. In the new research, the team designed antisense oligonucleotide (ASOs) probes to target two regions of the N-gene. Targeting two regions ensures the reliability of the sensor in case one region undergoes gene mutation, according to the researchers. The gold nanoparticles (AuNP) are capped with these single-stranded nucleic acids (ssDNA), which represents an ultra-sensitive sensing probe for the SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The team tested the performance of this sensor by using Covid-19 positive and negative samples. The sensor showed a significant increase in the voltage of positive samples compared to the negative ones and confirmed the presence of viral genetic material in less than five minutes. The sensor was able to differentiate viral RNA loads in these samples. Viral load is an important quantitative indicator of the progress of infection and a challenge to measure using existing diagnostic methods. The researchers noted that this platform has far-reaching applications due to its portability and low cost. The sensor, when integrated with microcontrollers and LED screens or with a smartphone via Bluetooth or wifi, could be used at the point-of-care in a doctor's office or even at home, they said. Beyond Covid-19, the research team also foresees the system to be adaptable for the detection of many different diseases. "These findings collectively suggest a decline in these species within the human gut, likely influenced by the shift towards Westernised lifestyles," explained the study’s authors. They posit that these Ruminococcus microbes may have lost access to their preferred fibre-rich diets, causing their decline among urbanites. Consequently, this may compromise humans' ability to process plant matter, exacerbating metabolic health issues. Previous studies have highlighted the insufficient fibre intake in industrialised societies, leading to adverse health consequences. Fortunately, developing "cellulose supplements" to address this issue appears feasible, with initial research yielding promising results for human gut health. However, further investigation is imperative to fully comprehend the links between cellulose microbes and human health before our guts become inhospitable to microbial adaptation. Currently, in her third year as a microbiology student at Iowa State University, Pooja Kasiviswanathan also attended an Astrobiology residential program at the University of Iowa. The part of the research explored how turnips grow in simulated Martian soil which was derived from volcanoes known as basaltic regolith soil because Martian soil is mostly made up of volcanic rock basalt, low in nutrients, and is bad at holding water due to lack of organic carbon. The simulated Martian soil was compared with the regular garden soil, which has more nutrients and other essential properties. When turnip seeds in the simulated Martian soil were watered with fresh water, showed 7% more germination than those in garden soil. However, the turnip was far more unhealthy compared to the garden soil. This meant that astronauts on the red planet needed some kind of <keyword id="14749143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="magic-fertilizer" source="Orion">magic fertilizer</keyword>. According to Pooja Kasiviswanathan, Alfalfa is already being used as a biofertilizer on Earth. So researchers grew radishes, turnips, and lettuce in Martian soil along with alfalfa and watered it with fresh water. With Alfalfa , plants showed exponential growth, 190% increase in turnips, the biomass of lettuce leaves increased by 79%, and radishes increased by 311%, compared to garden soil. They developed a briny solution to simulate the water on Mars and added marine bacteria - Synechococcus, which has the property to desalinate very salty water. Researchers found that within four weeks, the salinity of the water was reduced by 32%, but still, water was unhealthy for crops. Therefore, they filtered it through basalt-type volcanic rocks, then used it to water the radish and turnip plants grown in alfalfa. The dry weight of the turnip plant was increased by 278%, and the fresh weight of the radish increased by 1047%. What we’re doing instead is following a formula that accounts for existing vacancies, the number of scientists who will retire. So we’ll fill these vacancies over time,” Shekhar Mande, Director-General, CSIR told The Hindu. Matrimony apps see a jump in monthly and daily active users in March. </li></ul>On the face of it, there may be little or no connection between the white willow and online food ordering, but data shows that women in blue made Indians rather hungry in the month of March. And yes, most Indians also are as keen on marriage as ever, with matrimonial portals continuing to see higher month-on-month user metrics and app downloads. Three years after the pandemic struck, Indians are still addicted to their apps and are still looking for their dream job, if they are not planning their next vacation. From ordering food online to looking for jobs and homes online, Indian consumers are not putting the brakes on their online purchases just yet, even after the economy opened up completely post the lockdowns. App downloads continued in March as did higher monthly traffic across key consumer tech platforms. In the month of March, monthly and daily active users continued to surge across apps catering to consumer needs like online food ordering, travel, property rentals/purchases, groceries or even jobs. Leading technology services players may have slowed down on hiring, but employees are still flocking to job portals. According to a report by Bank of America, Naukri maintained its totem pole position in MAUs (monthly active users) with 12.1 million (+7.2% month on month) users and witnessed increase in daily active user base at 2.1 million (+6% MoM) in <keyword id="10294782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="march-2023" source="Orion">March 2023</keyword>. LinkedIn has the highest DAUs or daily active users at 3.7 million and is a clear leader in terms of user retention at 33% followed by Naukri at 18%, says the report. Data shows that consumer apps have continued to see good traction in the month of March 2023 compared to February. What consumers have been interestingly visiting less frequently —- are the beauty apps like Nykaa and Purplle — whose traffic is down month-on-month. Beauty brands believe that omnichannel and physical store visits are the reason for the decline in online purchases. Food delivery &amp; grocery continue to see demand According to Bank of America’s India Internet report, a majority of online food delivery apps saw an increase in fresh app downloads and user metrics, while Swiggy saw a marginal decline in fresh downloads. Online food delivery apps launched special match day games to increase engagement, which resulted in higher ordering too. While Zomato launched ZPL prediction, Swiggy launched Match Day Mania. Not surprising that monthly active users of Zomato and Swiggy grew 4.9%/4.6% MoM to 53 million/35 million. Daily active users for both Zomato and Swiggy increased 2-3% MoM to 6.1 million/4.4 million, respectively. Domino’s Pizza continued to be third in all metrics. Swiggy showed a higher retention at 13% vs Zomato at 11%. Real estate continues to be hot property online Housing continued to see the highest online traffic, as searches for rented and ownership continued to jump. Both monthly active users and app downloads were healthy for online players. Monthly active users increased sequentially for all the apps catering to housing, while daily active users grew for 99acres and Housing. Traffic on Magicbricks remained stable. Monthly active users on 99acres MAUs witnessed steep growth +14.3% compared to February. In terms of user retention, Housing continues to lead at 11%, followed by 99acres and Magicbricks at 9%. Revenge travel is still a big deal With the onset of summer, consumers are planning their next trip, which has resulted in strong traction for online travel apps like Cleartrip and Makemytrip. User metrics improved for Cleartrip, GoIbibo and MakeMyTrip; while Yatra and EaseMyTrip witnessed a decline, says Bank of America. MakeMyTrip monthly and daily users inched upwards (+9%/4% MoM) ahead of the upcoming summer holiday season in May/June 2023. Cleartrip MAUs/DAUs both grew 44.8% MoM to 1.3 million /0.1 million, respectively, majorly driven by launch of bus services in over 90 cities and various offers like zero convenience fees and flat 10% off on all bus bookings. MakeMyTrip continues to be the leader in MAUs, DAUs and retention; with 15.8 million MAUs/1.5 million DAUs while Goibibo has 8.5 million MAUs/ 0.7 million DAUs. High five for fashion apps As social distancing has given way to more contact intensive interactions, demand for fashion apparel has also increased meaningfully. Consumers continue to look for bargains online and Ajio’s All Star sale has delivered the numbers. According to data, Ajio’s monthly active users showed a sharp increase sequentially as downloads of the app increased. Ajio’s MAU/DAU base rocketed 22%/26% sequentially. Myntra/Nykaa Fashion’s MAU base improved 3% MoM each while DAU base saw a slight 1-2% decline. In terms of user retention, Myntra is at 17% followed by Ajio at 16%, says the report. Marriages are forever Young Indians continue to look for their perfect partner. User metrics and downloads witnessed an increase across all apps. Shaadi.com continued to be a leader with monthly and daily active users at 9 million/2.9 million, respectively in March 2023. Jeevansathi’s monthly numbers grew 13% month-on-month, while daily users increased by 8% compared to February. BharatMatrimony user metrics remained largely stable. Consumers continue to throng apps in search of Roti, Kapda & Makaan, March sees healthy user metrics and app downloads

<keyword id="18530965" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="southampton-southampton" source="Orion">Southampton Southampton</keyword>, Aug 25 (The Conversation) <keyword id="75770" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coral-reefs" source="Orion">Coral reefs</keyword> thrive in parts of the world's oceans that are low in nutrients. This mystery has puzzled scientists for centuries and has become known as the "Darwin paradox of coral reefs". Our new study adds the missing piece of the puzzle. We found that many species of coral cultivate and feed on the microscopic algae that live inside their cells. This vegetarian diet allows the corals to tap into a large pool of nutrients that was previously considered unavailable to them. Stony corals are soft-bodied animals made up of many individual polyps that live together as a colony. They secrete limestone skeletons that form the foundation of reefs. The coral polyps acquire nutritious compounds rich in nitrogen and phosphorus by catching prey like zooplankton with their tentacles. Many coral animals are also dependent on a <keyword id="6527304" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="symbiosis" source="Orion">symbiosis</keyword> - a mutually beneficial relationship - with the microscopic algae that live inside their cells. These photosynthetic algae produce large amounts of carbon-rich compounds, such as sugars, and transfer them to the host coral to generate energy. However, as most photosynthetic products are deficient in nitrogen and phosphorous, they cannot sustain the growth of the animals. Our findings suggest that, while coral animals may survive brief periods of starvation by feeding on their symbionts, some coral reefs could face the risk of prolonged nutrient deficiency due to global warming. This is concerning. Coral reefs are important underwater ecosystems that provide a home and feeding ground for countless organisms, sustaining around 25% of the world's ocean biodiversity. Vegetarian diet The symbiotic algae living within the corals are very efficient at taking up dissolved inorganic nutrients, like nitrate and phosphate, from the surrounding seawater. Even in nutrient-poor areas of the ocean, these compounds are present in considerable amounts as excretion products of organisms, such as sponges, that live close by. Ocean currents can also transport these nutrients to reefs. The coral host, on the other hand, cannot absorb or use nitrate and phosphate directly. But, through a series of long-term laboratory experiments, we demonstrated that corals actually digest some of their symbiont population to access the nitrogen and phosphorus that these algae absorb from the water. To provide evidence that the nutrients accumulated by the growing coral tissue originated from the symbionts, we supplied the corals with a chemical form of nitrogen that can only be absorbed from the water by the symbionts, not by the coral host. This nutrient compound was marked by a technique called isotopic labelling, which uses nitrogen atoms that are heavier than normal. These "heavy" isotopes allowed us to track the movement of nitrogen between the partners of the symbiosis by ultrasensitive detection methods. With this method, we could unambiguously demonstrate that the nitrogen atoms that sustained the growth of the coral tissue were derived from the dissolved inorganic nutrients that were fed to their symbiont algae. Our data suggest that most species of symbiotic corals can supplement their nutrition through such a vegetarian diet. From the laboratory to the ocean Together with our colleagues, we also analysed corals growing around remote islands in the <keyword id="12350" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-ocean" source="Orion">Indian Ocean</keyword>, some with seabirds on them and some without. Our results show that corals have the potential to farm and feed on their symbiont algae in the wild too. The reefs around some of these islands are supplied with substantial amounts of nutrients that come from "guano" - the excrement of seabirds nesting on the islands. On some of the other islands, seabird colonies have been decimated by invasive rats. The reefs surrounding these islands receive fewer nutrients. We measured the growth of staghorn coral colonies both around islands with and without dense seabird populations and found that growth was more than twice as fast on reefs that were supplied with <keyword id="18530966" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="seabird-nutrients" source="Orion">seabird nutrients</keyword>. About half of the nitrogen molecules in the tissue of the coral animals from islands with seabirds could be traced back to uptake by the symbiont algae. Global warming could complicate matters In the future, some coral reefs could face a decrease in nutrient availability due to global warming. Research suggests that warming surface waters are less likely to receive nutrients from deeper water layers. The reduced water productivity could result in fewer nutrients for their symbionts and subsequently less food for the coral animals. Our study indicates that some coral reefs might become vulnerable to starvation as ocean temperatures warm. When we moved corals from water with ample nutrients to water with fewer nutrients, they continued to eat their symbiont algae. This behaviour allowed them to sustain their growth for a few weeks, even in the absence of feeding. But once they had exhausted their population of symbiotic algae, the coral underwent bleaching (referring to the white appearance of the corals with low symbiont numbers in their tissue), stopped growing - and in some cases eventually died. Our findings reveal that corals can not only acquire nitrogen and phosphorus by feeding on prey as other animals do. But, by eating parts of their symbiont stock, they can also efficiently tap into the pool of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus that is otherwise only accessible to plants. Through this process, symbiotic corals gain an advantage over other animals in environments that are low in nutrients, explaining their prominent role in the formation of reefs in nutrient-poor water. However, increasingly severe nutrient depletion will add a further threat to some coral reefs already experiencing bleaching caused by heat stress.(The Conversation) AMS AMS
