<keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> is planning to open around 50 new stores in India over the next three-to-four years, around half of which would come up in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> and <keyword id="44522" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uttarakhand">Uttarakhand</keyword>, which recently saw <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/politics/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">BJP coming to power</a>.<br />

As of now, there are around 20 Walmart stores in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/companies/CVC-summons-Walmart-India-head-over-bribery-charges/articleshow/49660050.cms">India</a>. Besides Uttarakhand and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/modi-hopes-record-development-in-up-with-yogi-adityanath-as-cm/articleshow/57717700.cms">Uttar Pradesh</a>, there would be 10 new stores each in Maharashtra, <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> and <keyword id="68884" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword>.<br />
<br />
Talking of UP and Uttarakhand, there might be two more stores coming in Lucknow, along with Ghaziabad, Noida, Kanpur, Allahabad, Haridwar, Dehradun and Haldwani.<br />

These stores provide direct and indirect employment to 2,000-2,500 persons each, and opening stores at this level means that the company may end up creating over 40,000 jobs in UP and Uttarakhand combined.<br />

"Our commitment to the country is very deep and we are growing our footprints in India further by opening 50 more cash-and-carry stores in next few years across key focus states, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/companies/Walmart-Extends-B2B-Online-Wholesale-Platform-In-Andhra-Pradesh/articleshow/45337052.cms">AP</a>, Telangana, UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Maharashtra etc. Our development team is growing this store pipeline for last couple of years and we're confident of continuing our contribution to the creation of thousands of skilled jobs, helpings kiranas, farmers &amp; SME suppliers succeed through our cash &amp; carry business," a Walmart India told TNN.<br />

In other news, Walmart is also looking forward to getting clarity on the food retail guidelines so that it can enter into food retail in the country as it does not want to limit itself to domestically produced and manufactured food products.<br />

Walmart to open 50 new stores in India; focuses on Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand

<br /> The June 2013 disaster in <keyword id="44522" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uttarakhand">Uttarakhand</keyword> is unforgettable for the heavy loss of human life, as well as the economic and ecological damages it caused. However, the inadequate disaster management and delayed response from the government were even more ominous.<br />
 <br /> While heavy rain (more than 375% of normal rainfall) inundated Uttarakhand and the surrounding areas, it also led to the melting of the Chorabari Glacier and the <keyword id="30363" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mandakini">Mandakini</keyword> burst its banks, resulting in the region’s worst-ever flooding in five decades.<br />
 <br />
Government officials committed many errors that had a direct bearing on the tragedy:<br />
·         Early weather warnings went unheeded. Otherwise, the loss of human life would have been lower.<br />
·         Haphazard development with hotels near the waterways, extensive tunnelling for badly planned roads and more than 70 hydroelectric projects have created a serious environmental imbalance.<br />
·         Private sources put it to over 5,000 deaths. As the flooding occurred during peak pilgrimage season, more than 70,000 pilgrims were stranded with little or no food for over three days.<br />
 <br />
Total economic loss is estimated at Rs 20,000 crore. The damage to infrastructure such as roads, hydro projects and housing will be difficult to overcome. As tourism accounts for almost 30% of Uttarakhand’s GDP, road and other infrastructural damage means the state government has to ask tourists to stay away, leading to loss of economic activities.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Disaster management </strong><br /> While the <keyword id="107430" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Disaster-Management-Authority">National Disaster Management Authority</keyword> (NDMA) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, did their best, it was not enough. The NDMA and the NDRF have to be better equipped, especially in terms of communications, to properly manage quick relief work. The director general of the NDRF has been changed every year for the past nine years, causing a lack of continuity in this body. Moreover, we don’t have fully trained and fully equipped disaster management personnel. The locals are not trained either or opt to work with the authorities. Early and prompt action is vital for all disaster management and this requires active involvement of the locals.<br />
 <br />
Local people should be made aware of the problems likely to occur and must be taught how to respond to those. Each region or locality should have a rescue shelter and a command network in place. In other words, public awareness of ecology and environmental issues is a must. The government has to work with the people to protect the environment. Also, weather warnings should be taken seriously and government officials should focus more on prevention in order to minimise such losses.<br />
 <br />
A comprehensive Himalayan environment and ecology plan covering all the Indian states concerned should be drawn up and implemented. Experts even advocate an international policy in co-operation with other countries such as China, Nepal and Bhutan.<br />
 <br />
Uttarakhand today is focusing on rebuilding its infrastructure and preventing further ecological damage. The state has already reconstructed a major part of its roads, bridges and communication infrastructure. However, this should top the priority list now as transport and communication are extremely vital to keep the economy going in this mountain state.<br />
 <br />
Only last month, the government reopened the <em>Char Dham</em> <em>Yatra</em> for the pilgrims, which can revive the tourism-based economy to some extent, bringing in the badly needed tourist money to the state. The government has also been criticised for the slow pace in rebuilding houses and infrastructure, and thus generating employment.<br />
 <br />
The state government has come under fire for the irregular disbursal of compensation – Rs 2 lakh for every affected family and Rs 3,000 per month for two years as rental compensation to each of the 3,320 families that lost their houses. An additional compensation of Rs 5 lakh for building a house on the land owned by a family did not help either. That is because the families that lost their homes in the floods found it difficult to prove land ownership as all their belongings had been washed away. In many cases, the land itself no longer exists and it is still unclear where the new dwellings can be built. Understandably, the government will have to reassess and speed up the relief and rehabilitation process for genuine sufferers.<br />
 <br />
Additionally, the government is taking steps to ensure proper development of watershed areas, water supply and sanitation. Loans to the tune of $121.20 million for a decentralised watershed development project and $24 million for rural sanitation and water supply have been obtained from the World Bank.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Employment issues</strong><br />
Uttarakhand is now witnessing third highest level of unemployment across the country. The state has a largely rural economy and last year’s dislocation of the tourism industry and loss of homes have increased unemployment and forced many to migrate.<br />
 <br />
The failure of industrialisation also contributes to unemployment in the state. The government has to first ensure that the rural areas have access to sufficient clean water, land and clean environment. It should also actively support local agriculture and other employment-generating activities.<br />
 <br />
The government is currently working towards better forest management and planned hydroelectricity management. Two of the country’s major rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna, originate in Uttarakhand and responsible handling of these river projects is not only crucial for the state but for the entire country.<br />
 <br />
However, Uttarakhand is gradually overcoming the impact of the natural disaster that struck last year and rebuilding itself. But how fast it can be back on the prosperity track is the key question now.<br />

Uttarakhand: Dealing With The Disaster Aftermath In The Abode Of Gods

<br /> Gujarat Government has today banned the sale of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s instant noodle brand 'Maggi' for a month in the state after the product failed the food safety test, asking the company to withdraw all its stock of <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword> from the state.<br />
<br /> Apart from Maggi, the state government also tested one sample each of instant <keyword id="60202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Noodles">noodles</keyword> of <keyword id="17095" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunfeast">Sunfeast</keyword> and S K Foods and has banned the latter for a month as high lead content of 4 PPM was found in it.<br />
<br />
"Twenty seven samples collected from different parts of the state were tested by Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration. The test has shown that lead was present above the prescribed limit while Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) was also present," Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel told PTI.<br />
<br />
Of the 27 samples, lead content in 14 of them was found to be 2.8 PPM to 5 PPM (particle per million), which is above the prescribed limit of 2.5 PPM. Presence of excess lead is harmful for health, he said.<br />
<br />
"Monosodium glutamate, which should not be present in the product, was found in all the samples tested. For these reasons, the government has banned the sale and distribution of Maggi noodles for one month in the state. The government has also informed Nestle to withdraw all its Maggi stock from Gujarat," Patel said.<br />
<br />
He said the health department will conduct inspections across the state to enforce the ban and action will be taken against those selling the product in any part of the state.<br />
<br />
"Sample of Sunfeast passed the lead test, but traces of monosodium glutamate were found in it. We will test more samples of Sunfeast before taking any action on its instant noodle," he said.<br />

After Delhi and Uttarakhand, Maggie exiled from Gujarat too

New Delhi, Nov 25 () Food regulator FSSAI on Monday said that over 1.06 lakh food samples were analysed last fiscal, of which 3.7 per cent were found to be unsafe and 15.8 per cent sub-standard.
<p> The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) reported 36 per cent rise in civil cases to 2,813 and 86 per cent increase in criminal cases to 18,550, it said in a statement.
</p><p> There has been a 67 per cent increase in the number of cases where penalties were imposed to 12,727. A total amount of Rs 32.58 crore has been realised during 2018-19, up 23 per cent from previous year. There have been 701 convictions in criminal cases.
</p><p> FSSAI released the data on enforcement efforts by states/UTs in the country. The released data includes samples analysed, non-conforming samples, cases launched, convictions and penalties by states/UTs during the year 2018-19
</p><p> "During the year 2018-19, a total of 1,06,459 samples were analysed. While 3.7 pc of these samples were found to be unsafe, 15.8 pc were found to be sub-standard and 9 pc samples had labelling defects," FSSAI said in a statement.
</p><p> There has been a 7 per cent increase in the number of samples analysed during 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18 and "25 per cent more samples were found non-conforming compared to the previous year", the regulator said, adding that this indicates there has been better targeting of enforcement efforts by states/UTs.
</p><p> "More rigorous enforcement by states is essential to build public trust in food," FSSAI CEO Pawan Agarwal said. 
</p><p> He admitted that public trust has been eroded in recent times due to fake news, creating widespread perception of large-scale adulteration in the country.
</p><p> FSSAI is working with states and UTs, particularly with weaker ones in this regard, he added.
</p><p> "For this, FSSAI is increasing the capacity of state food laboratories and enabling use of private food labs for testing food samples. Enforcement efforts have to be better targeted and preceded by surveillance efforts to identify hotspots and problem areas," Agarwal said.</p><p>
</p><p> Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Delhi and Chandigarh performed well, while states that have performed poorly include Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Telengana, and Uttarakhand.
