<ul><li>While QSRs have been growing aggressively in the last two years, few have been concentrating on dine-in experiences.</li><li>Only McDonald’s run by <keyword id="15483921" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Westlife-Foodworld" source="Orion">Westlife Foodworld</keyword> in India has gained from the trend as it focussed on omnichannel strategy.</li><li>The pizza category – where the product is designed for delivery – suffered the most as dine-ins gained popularity.</li></ul>Indians are wanting to step out for their meals, and that’s hurting quick-service restaurants (QSRs) as well as delivery apps equally. So much so that Swiggy has recently announced that it’s integrating its dine-out offerings onto its platform across 24 cities, allowing users to access discounts as they book via the app. While QSRs have been growing aggressively in the last two years – with a large number of new store openings – few of them have been concentrating on dine-in experiences. And only one chain – McDonald’s run by Westlife Foodworld in India – has gained from the trend as it focussed on the post-pandemic retail trend of an omnichannel strategy. “McDonald’s (Westlife) reported a 20% y-o-y same-store sales growth (SSSG), largely driven by higher guest count and average order value, due to its meals and omnichannel strategy,” said a report by BNP Paribas on the company’s third quarter results. A Credit Suisse report had said last month that McDonald’s offers more meals – across breakfast, coffee and chicken apart from burgers and sides. A larger menu is best suited to bring in footfalls through the day. “Westlife/McDonald’s reiterated their preference for the larger-size, longer-lease store model, which they have successfully figured out; the rest of the listed universe has pivoted to a smaller -store format,” said Credit Suisse. Pizzas: Undelivered growth The pizza category – where the product is designed for delivery – suffered the most. The franchises that run Pizza Hut – Sapphire and <keyword id="142256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Devyani-International" source="Orion">Devyani International</keyword> – saw a sequential fall in SSSG by 4% and 6%, respectively. Jubilant that runs Domino’s showed almost flat SSSG growth sequentially. “Softer demand continued in the pizza category owing to larger delivery salience, relatively higher penetration and elevated competitive intensity. Pizza Hut posted a q-o-q (quarter-on-quarter) decline in sales, while Domino’s reported flat like-for-like growth of 0.3% y-o-y,” said BNP Paribas. Like-for-like or LFL growth is a metric that indicates revenues of stores with similar characteristics, omitting outliers. KFC witnessed a decline in its ADS (average daily sales per store) both sequentially and year-on-year (y-o-y) due to weak consumer spending and incremental store additions in non-metro cities that typically have lower ADS. While 35% of sales for Domino’s comes from on-premises, for McDonald’s that percentage stands at 52%, for Pizza Hut it’s 41% and for KFC it’s 54%. Moreover, almost all QSRs have been expanding their store numbers but reducing store sizes to make them delivery friendly. So much so, even Pizza Hut, which had started off as a dine-in brand, had changed its strategy to focus on delivery in the last few years to catch up with its closest competitor Domino’s. <div type="image" title="QSR report" msid="98201473" hostid="261" sizebytes="29596"></div> Then there is the slowdown… Apart from changing preferences, Indians also seem to be re-thinking their discretionary spends – which is also eating into <keyword id="6517640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="QSR" source="Orion">QSR</keyword> business. “The slowdown in discretionary consumption, especially post Diwali, has dampened the strong demand sentiment that QSR players witnessed in the past few quarters. This is attributed to rising inflationary pressures, a cut in household expenses and consumers’ down-trading behaviour,” said a report by BNP Paribas. Moreover, the growth that a majority of consumer companies have foreseen might turn out to be a mirage. “The growth rate for food delivery has slowed down versus our projections (along with many peer companies globally). Indians now want to eat out instead of delivery – a move that’s hitting pizza makers the most

Low cost of ownership is also a reason for B2B players to shift to electric vehicles. India is the largest two wheeler market in the world with an estimated 375-400 million two wheelers on the road. Since affordability is the biggest driver of 2-wheeler sales among customers, savings that are brought about by ownership of 2-wheelers are expected to drive growth. According to the report, ownership of electric 2-wheelers can result in anything from 20-70% in cost savings. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Going local" comment="subhead2" text="Going local">Going local</cmsannotation> Given the relatively lower barriers to entry, the <keyword id="3333089" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="electric-two-wheeler" source="Orion">electric two wheeler</keyword> market has seen hundreds of new players. Most of these players are ‘assemblers’ who import a significant portion of their components and even technology from China and other countries. Given the government’s push for indigenization and original equipment manufacturers or OEMs’ own need to protect from supply shocks, there is room to go for growth in localization too. The report also indicates that consumers will also reward the more integrated and sophisticated players. Not only will such OEMs be able to provide a more cost-effective product but also offer a superior experience that builds on in-house capabilities to improve and innovate, as per Red Seer. According to the PWC report, ‘Winning the EV race through localisation: An India perspective’, the regulatory push has helped initiate the journey towards EV localisation. This is especially true with electric 2-wheelers and manufacturers focusing on localisation to claim Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME)II benefits which provides a 40% subsidy to EV makers on the cost of the vehicles. Yet, there are challenges. Battery performance, charging times, and range remain the primary challenge for both existing electric 2-wheeler users and prospective buyers. While the range of most electric 2-wheelers exceeds the average distance travelled by over 90% of their consumers, ‘range anxiety’ still remains, Red Seer says. Reliable charging infrastructure is needed to build user confidence on electric 2-wheelers as a fully viable mode of transport. “Recent buyers of internal combustion engine (ICE) 2-wheelers have indicated that they will buy an electric 2-wheeler next time if more charging stations and fast charging are ubiquitous,” says Red Seer. The 4A’s: adaptability, awareness, availability, and affordability is a complete approach to persuade consumers to switch to electric 2-wheelers in the coming years. It’s however essential to add that the government has been the fundamental enabler for the early adoption of EVs with FAME and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. The Red Seer report says that it’s crucial that the government continues incentivizing the switch to electric 2-wheelers to encourage consumers. New Delhi, After an entrepreneur complained in a LinkedIn post that a <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> delivery agent advised him to cheat the company by paying some money directly to him and enjoy the food, the company's Founder and CEO <keyword id="476451" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deepinder-goyal" source="Orion">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> said he is "aware" of this fraud and is "working to plug the loopholes". Vinay Sati posted that a Zomato delivery agent suggested that from next time, pay him Rs 200 or Rs 300 and enjoy food worth Rs 1,000. "Aap bas mujhe 200rs, 300rs de dena or 1000rs ke khane ke maje lena," Sati quoted the agent as saying in the post. The agent allegedly told him that "I will show it to Zomato that you have not taken the food but will also give you the food you ordered". "I got goosebumps hearing what scam is happening with Zomato," posted Sati. He ordered some Burger King burgers from Zomato and made the online payment. "And as soon as the delivery boy came after 30-40 minutes, he told me that sir, don't pay online next time," said the entrepreneur. "He said that next time when you will order food worth 700-800rs through COD (cash on delivery) you only have to pay Rs 200 for that." Sati said: "Deepinder Goyal ji, now don't say that you don't even know that this is happening?" Goyal replied: "Aware of this and working to plug the loopholes". Zomato CEO says aware of fraud at delivery agents' end, fixing it

Matrimony apps see a jump in monthly and daily active users in March. </li></ul>On the face of it, there may be little or no connection between the white willow and online food ordering, but data shows that women in blue made Indians rather hungry in the month of March. And yes, most Indians also are as keen on marriage as ever, with matrimonial portals continuing to see higher month-on-month user metrics and app downloads. Three years after the pandemic struck, Indians are still addicted to their apps and are still looking for their dream job, if they are not planning their next vacation. From ordering food online to looking for jobs and homes online, Indian consumers are not putting the brakes on their online purchases just yet, even after the economy opened up completely post the lockdowns. App downloads continued in March as did higher monthly traffic across key consumer tech platforms. In the month of March, monthly and daily active users continued to surge across apps catering to consumer needs like online food ordering, travel, property rentals/purchases, groceries or even jobs. Yes, job searches have seen an unprecedented surge in the month of March shows data from Sensor Tower’s monthly data print. Leading technology services players may have slowed down on hiring, but employees are still flocking to job portals. According to a report by Bank of America, Naukri maintained its totem pole position in MAUs (monthly active users) with 12.1 million (+7.2% month on month) users and witnessed increase in daily active user base at 2.1 million (+6% MoM) in <keyword id="10294782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="march-2023" source="Orion">March 2023</keyword>. LinkedIn has the highest DAUs or daily active users at 3.7 million and is a clear leader in terms of user retention at 33% followed by Naukri at 18%, says the report. Data shows that consumer apps have continued to see good traction in the month of March 2023 compared to February. What consumers have been interestingly visiting less frequently —- are the beauty apps like Nykaa and Purplle — whose traffic is down month-on-month. Beauty brands believe that omnichannel and physical store visits are the reason for the decline in online purchases. Food delivery &amp; grocery continue to see demand According to Bank of America’s India Internet report, a majority of online food delivery apps saw an increase in fresh app downloads and user metrics, while Swiggy saw a marginal decline in fresh downloads. Online food delivery apps launched special match day games to increase engagement, which resulted in higher ordering too. While Zomato launched ZPL prediction, Swiggy launched Match Day Mania. Not surprising that monthly active users of Zomato and Swiggy grew 4.9%/4.6% MoM to 53 million/35 million. Daily active users for both Zomato and Swiggy increased 2-3% MoM to 6.1 million/4.4 million, respectively. Domino’s Pizza continued to be third in all metrics. Swiggy showed a higher retention at 13% vs Zomato at 11%. Real estate continues to be hot property online Housing continued to see the highest online traffic, as searches for rented and ownership continued to jump. Both monthly active users and app downloads were healthy for online players. Monthly active users increased sequentially for all the apps catering to housing, while daily active users grew for 99acres and Housing. Traffic on Magicbricks remained stable. Monthly active users on 99acres MAUs witnessed steep growth +14.3% compared to February. In terms of user retention, Housing continues to lead at 11%, followed by 99acres and Magicbricks at 9%. Revenge travel is still a big deal With the onset of summer, consumers are planning their next trip, which has resulted in strong traction for online travel apps like Cleartrip and Makemytrip. User metrics improved for Cleartrip, GoIbibo and MakeMyTrip; while Yatra and EaseMyTrip witnessed a decline, says Bank of America. MakeMyTrip monthly and daily users inched upwards (+9%/4% MoM) ahead of the upcoming summer holiday season in May/June 2023. Cleartrip MAUs/DAUs both grew 44.8% MoM to 1.3 million /0.1 million, respectively, majorly driven by launch of bus services in over 90 cities and various offers like zero convenience fees and flat 10% off on all bus bookings. MakeMyTrip continues to be the leader in MAUs, DAUs and retention; with 15.8 million MAUs/1.5 million DAUs while Goibibo has 8.5 million MAUs/ 0.7 million DAUs. High five for fashion apps As social distancing has given way to more contact intensive interactions, demand for fashion apparel has also increased meaningfully. Consumers continue to look for bargains online and Ajio’s All Star sale has delivered the numbers. According to data, Ajio’s monthly active users showed a sharp increase sequentially as downloads of the app increased. Ajio’s MAU/DAU base rocketed 22%/26% sequentially. Myntra/Nykaa Fashion’s MAU base improved 3% MoM each while DAU base saw a slight 1-2% decline. In terms of user retention, Myntra is at 17% followed by Ajio at 16%, says the report. Marriages are forever Young Indians continue to look for their perfect partner. User metrics and downloads witnessed an increase across all apps. Shaadi.com continued to be a leader with monthly and daily active users at 9 million/2.9 million, respectively in March 2023. Jeevansathi’s monthly numbers grew 13% month-on-month, while daily users increased by 8% compared to February. BharatMatrimony user metrics remained largely stable. Jeevansathi has the highest user retention at 34% followed by BharatMatrimony at 33%.
