Swiggy will invest in building the cloud kitchens for its restaurant partners. “Swiggy has always maintained that cloud kitchens will be the future of food delivery. Very soon, India will have the second-highest number of cloud kitchens in the world, only next to China. With the massive growth in online food ordering over the last 2-3 years, India has leapfrogged the widespread in-restaurant dining culture that was prevalent in many international markets,” said Vishal Bhatia, CEO of new supply at Swiggy. Swiggy Access, an initiative that was launched two years ago, helps restaurants set up cloud kitchens. In the last two years, Swiggy has invested ₹175 crore in one million sqft space across 14 cities. With this, Swiggy has the highest number of cloud kitchens in India. Cloud kitchens help startups as well as restaurants to also reach out to more cities and service more customers. “The milestone of Swiggy successfully creating over 1000 partner kitchens shows the faith the restaurant partners have in the concept and bolsters our pioneering efforts in enabling more success stories in the restaurant ecosystem,” said Bhatia. Swiggy also claims that its cloud kitchen initiative generated 8,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country. Interestingly, Uber founder Travis Kalanick also invested in the same space as the CEO of Cloud Kitchens. Kalanick's startup is also looking at expanding its business into India as it has been looking to hire India program managers and more.

Swiggy invests ₹250 crore to set up 1000 cloud kitchens

The food court reportedly makes 300,000 deliveries a month via online food platforms. On the other hand, India’s restaurants lobby recently accused the online food delivery majors of ‘eating into their business.’ Last month, small restaurants filed a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/swiggy-and-zomato-are-being-targeted-for-misusing-dominant-position-in-a-petition-filed-with-indias-competition-watchdog/articleshow/67376953.cms">complaint</a> with the country’s anti-trust regulator, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against deep discounting practices adopted by Zomato and Swiggy, accusing aggregators of getting consumers addicted to discounts. According to a Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/technology/indias-food-delivery-apps-navigate-discounts-losses-in-race-for-customers#gs.mmwIqqqI">report</a>, Zomato, Swiggy and Foodpanda invests nearly half a billion dollars in last two years on discounts. For example, Zomato has been running a 50% discount deal with many of its partners over the past four months. And Swiggy, which raised $1 billion, and entered the unicorn club, is also targeting deals in competition with Zomato. One fast food chain owner told Business Insider India it had listed on online food aggregator platforms for the sake of deliveries, and not discounts. He added that the restaurant “doesn’t believe in discounts.” According to him, the discount strategy doesn’t necessarily impact customer loyalty, as people are likely to end up at their preferred restaurants. While an official from the restaurant association stated that even though online food aggregators have brought restaurants closer to customers, it is important to note that no one sells at a loss just to attract customers and create dominance. On the flip side, online food aggregators contend that their approach is just designed to increase customer reach. “Discounts are merely a mechanism to encourage user participation as we advance our services. In India, restaurants have a love-hate relationship with online food delivery platforms

<ul><li><keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> has launched a video section on its platform, which will have 18 original shows. </li><li>Starting Monday, the platform is going to offer viewers and foodies original shows, recipes and more with over 2,000 videos.</li><li>This makes the <keyword id="2955508" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-aggregator">food aggregator</keyword> unicorn the latest one to join the Indian OTT race. </li></ul>Zomato knows you order food from the app while binge-watching stuff on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar etc. But the food aggregator doesn’t want you to leave its app. So it has launched its own video platform and original shows. Through the video section on the Zomato app, the platform is going to offer original shows, recipes, and more with over 2,000 videos. It's launching 18 original shows, each of which will have episodes ranging between 3 to 15 minutes. The shows have been shot on a vertical frame making way for mobile-easy viewing. These videos will range between comedy, reality, fiction, advice, celebrity interviews and will explore food in unique, engaging and entertaining videos, Zomato said in a statement. The released trailer shows content from star Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, comedians like Sumukhi Suresh and Sahil Shah and a cooking show with Bollywood stars which will be hosted by Janice Sequiera. The Indian OTT space has been buzzing with new entrants and mergers. Recently, e-commerce giant Flipkart announced its entry into the video content war, which in India is currently led by the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar. Smaller players like AltBalaji and Zee5 had announced a partnership to produce content together. Meanwhile, Zomato’s entry into the video space comes at a time when its food vertical has been in the eye of multiple controversies thanks to its discounting features like Zomato Gold and Infinity Dining.The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) launched a ‘logout’ movement last week claiming that the business practices of aggregators are unethical. Zomato launches its own video platform with original shows

In a petition addressed to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), over 500 small and mid-sized restaurants have complained about the food delivery companies — including Zomato, Swiggy, UberEats and Foodpanda — ‘misusing their dominant position’. The small restaurants are urging India’s competition watchdog to put a halt to the unsustainable pricing standards by online food aggregators as well their deep discounting practices. They claim that it’s diverting consumer traffic away from them and to these online platforms. The petition also accused the food companies of using in-house kitchens, which has been another thorn in the side of local restaurant businesses. Same, same but different Unlike the allegations against e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart, the food aggregators are barred from foreign direct investment (FDI). However, the CCI will carefully examine the exploitative activities <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/zomato-swiggy-others-eating-into-our-business-restaurants/67358478">according to an official</a> from the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI). He added that a roundtable meeting with the food aggregators has been scheduled for next week that will address the issues put forward in the petition. While UberEats and Foodpanda did not respond to the petition, Zomato and Swiggy have reportedly denied the allegations. According to both companies, discounts are just a way to attract customers and encourage participation. In fact, the partner restaurants — the same people issuing the complaint — can also engage in the discount campaigns as per the Zomato spokesperson. Swiggy <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/restaurant-association-files-cci-complaint-against-major-foodtech-players/">defended its actions</a> by stating that it has been fair to the restaurant community and nearly doubled the restaurant partners on its platform, thereby contributing to their business rather than taking away from it. Swiggy and Zomato are being targeted for ‘misusing dominant position’ in a petition filed with India’s competition watchdog

 At the root of the problem lies the company’s hit offering – <keyword id="4299597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato-Gold">Zomato Gold</keyword>, which offers consumers avail of 1+1 on food and 2+2 on drinks. Zomato also launched the infinity dining feature, where users for a fixed cost can order everything off the menu. However, Goyal himself admitted that “bargain hunters have also joined Zomato Gold and they are hurting some segments of the restaurant industry very badly.” He also promised to modify Zomato Gold which will result in a win-win situation. But he also asked restaurateurs to do their part. He wrote, “I would also want to urge the restaurant industry to proactively look at ways to reduce operating costs, so that eating out becomes more affordable for consumers - our only objective here is to drive the growth of the restaurant industry.” His statement led to multiple restaurant owners ridicule him for not understanding the costs involved in running a restaurant. Most restaurant owners pointed out that it’s the massive discounts offered by food aggregators that is hurting the consumers. Noted restaurateur Riyaaz Amlani mocked the entrepreneur and wrote, “Visionary idea as usual! Maybe we can fire restaurant workers? Or put a gun on our landlord heads to reduce rent? Or buy inferior ingredients so that we can reduce costs, and offer lower prices to accommodate your vision. Why didn’t I think of this before?”

The share price of Jubilant Foodworks, which sells Domino’s and Dunkin Donuts in India, has plunged over 12% in the last three months. Goldman Sachs maintained ‘Sell’ with a price of ₹1,129 for shares of Domino’s parent company Jubilant FoodWorks. It said, “Dominos will find it challenging to deliver double digit same-store sales growth in FY20/21,” citing risk from aggressive expansion of Swiggy and Zomato in smaller Indian cities. Domino’s has over 1,227 restaurants in over 270 cities. Jubilant Foodworks had reported an operational revenue of ₹35.3 billion in FY19 as compared to ₹29.8 billion in FY18. Meanwhile, ICICI Securities in its report has pointed out that the “aggressive discounting by food aggregators over the past few months continues to impact the dine-in industry and Jubilant Foodworks’ dine-ingrowth in the top-10 cities”. Swiggy is present in over 200 cities while Zomato has gone beyond 300 cities in India. Their deep dive approach into tier-2 and tier-3 cities could result in Indians preferring to order in instead of going to restaurants to eat, something that has helped Domino’s same store sales so far. In the US too, Domino’s saw a similar turn of events, with food delivery aggregators like DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub with their deep discounts and variety of options, impacted the sales of Domino’s. Swiggy and Zomato are eating into Domino's slice of profit

<ul><li>The company has reported a profit of ₹7,592 lakhs which is a 2.2% fall from the same quarter in the previous year.</li><li>Meanwhile, its total revenue from operations stood at ₹98,823 lakhs. </li><li>In Q1 FY20, the company had seen a profit after tax of ₹7,478 lakhs. </li></ul><keyword id="95677" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jubilant-FoodWorks">Jubilant Foodworks</keyword>, which runs Domino’s and Dunkin Donuts in India reported a 2.2% fall in profits for the second quarter to ₹75.92 crores. In the same quarter last year, its profits were at ₹77.67 crore. Its total revenues went up by 12% to ₹988 crore from ₹881 crores in the same quarter last year. The stock of Jubilant Foodworks was trading 5.10% higher at ₹1,429 at 2.30 pm. The marginal fall in profits seems to have been affected by multiple factors – the slowdown in the country as well as the growing dominance of Zomato and Swiggy. The stock was downgraded to underperform by the brokerage firm <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/credit-suisse-downgrades-jubilant-foodworks-to-underperform/articleshow/71310191.cms">Credit Suisse</a> in late September due to “a weak demand environment and aggressiveness of online aggregators”. Analysts pointed out that the “aggressive discounting by food aggregators over the past few months continues to impact the dine-in industry and Jubilant Foodworks’ dine-ingrowth in the top-10 cities”. In the US too, Domino’s saw a similar turn of events, with food delivery aggregators like DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub literally eating into its sales.

Domino’s parent Jubilant’s profits fall by 2% – Swiggy, Zomato could be the reason

Top VC firm <keyword id="136147" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India</keyword> has sold 17.2 crore shares of <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> in two tranches in the open market, lowering down its stake in the online food aggregator to 4.4 per cent from earlier 6.41 per cent. In a fresh filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (<keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword>), Zomato said Sequoia Capital India sold some 6.7 crore shares in the September 6-October 14, 2021 period and 10.5 crore shares between June 27-August 25, 2022. The stock sales were performed by <keyword id="14821825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india-growth-investment-holdings" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India Growth Investment Holdings</keyword> I and <keyword id="13302083" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sci-growth-investments-ii" source="Orion">SCI Growth Investments II</keyword>, according to Zomato. <keyword id="10639596" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india-investments-iv" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India Investments IV</keyword> also received 45,153,346 incremental equity shares on August 10 owing to the acquisition of quick-commerce delivery platform Blinkit, which further has a lock-in period of one year. Sequoia Capital India joins a list of private market investors like Delivery Hero, Moore Strategic Ventures, and <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword>, which have sold their shares in Zomato in the past months, either in open market or via block deals, as the online food delivery platform's stock gets hammered. On Friday, Zomato shares closed around Rs 61.85. Earlier this month, ride-hailing platform Uber sold its 7.8 per cent stake worth over $390 million in Zomato. Uber, which suffered around $707 million loss in its Zomato investment in the first half of this year, sold its share in the food delivery aggregator via a block deal on stock exchanges that has been bought by several global and Indian VCs. The Zomato block deal was executed at Rs 50.44 per share equivalent to 612 million or 7.8 per cent of total outstanding shares. In a statement to IANS, Zomato had said that "We are a public company and are not privy to what our shareholders are doing with their shares". According to the company, the losses for Blinkit are coming down every month -- from Rs 2,040 million (about $26 million) in January 2022 to Rs 929 million ($12 million) in July. The 10-minute delivery platform was acquired by Zomato for Rs 4,447 crore (about $568 million). Sequoia Capital offloads 2% of its stake in Zomato

Uber, the cab aggregator service from San Francisco, is all set to bring <keyword id="2960214" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ubereats">UberEATS</keyword> in India in the second quarter of the year, and has already started bringing restaurant partners on board.

<ul><li><keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> will soon launch an online marketplace to help its restaurants procure eco-friendly packaging easily.</li><li><keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> runs an initiative called Swiggy Packaging Assist with paper and glass as alternative options. </li><li>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the aim for 2022 to eradicate the use of single-use plastics.</li></ul>A restaurant owner in Delhi’s Rohini area has signed out of a food aggregator platform and asked a customer to come to the outlet with a tiffin box to collect food. What might sound like a funny incident, was actually a noble thought – the hotelier didn’t want to use plastic for <keyword id="6376068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery">food delivery</keyword>. While the Indian government might not have gone ahead with the <keyword id="6570438" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="single-use-plastic">single use plastic</keyword> ban, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to eradicate the use of single-use plastics by 2022. And, it seems to have turned people wee bit conscious. If you order food online from Zomato, Swiggy, <keyword id="2960214" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ubereats">UberEats</keyword> or others, you would know about the plastic wrapping that comes along with the food – from the signature tape to plastic boxes. But aggregators are aware of the rising use of plastics by restaurant partners. Now, they are beginning to take up an active role. A marketplace for alternative packaging Two years back, Zomato was one of the first to come with an option called ‘don’t send cutlery’. The foodtech unicorn is also working with research-based start-ups and firms to introduce high quality, eco-friendly packaging. “For a wider use-case, we will soon be launching an online marketplace (akin to an e-commerce portal), employing our network of suppliers for restaurants to easily procure eco-friendly packaging. Packaging offered which will include a segment of 100% naturally biodegradable units, largely consisting of sugarcane bagasse, bamboo, palm leaf and paper solutions,” said a Zomato spokesperson. Taking charge Meanwhile, Swiggy has been running a marketplace called Swiggy Packaging Assist for over a year now. “Packaging Assist enables restaurant partners to get access to a variety of packing solutions including (but not limited to) eco-friendly packaging options made of materials such as paper and glass. Hundreds of our restaurant partners across cities have slowly started using greener packaging solutions when possible,” said a Swiggy spokesperson. Swiggy said that it took up Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for 100 tonnes of plastic a month, and will grow six times over in the next six months. Zomato and Swiggy’s rival – UberEats educates its restaurant partners about the importance of right packaging. “We firmly believe that food delivery platforms can play a major role to empower restaurants and local businesses with sustainable packaging and encourage implementation of economical, plastic free packaging / eco-friendly options,” said Uber Eats.
