Here's what you should know about the difference between liquid soap and bar soap for handwashing.<h2>Bar soap and liquid soap are equally as effective</h2>Soap, whether liquid or bar, will reduce the number of pathogens on your hands. The friction you create when you're rubbing your hands together and lathering up <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show-me-the-science-handwashing.html">lifts away dirt and microorganisms,</a> and the water then rinses them off. Additionally, soap of any variety is particularly good at deactivating certain types of viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. That's because this virus is what's called an enveloped virus, meaning it contains an outer membrane of lipid, or fat. Maloy says that soap molecules are effective at dissolving this membrane, which deactivates the virus, essentially killing it. Both experts say that whether you decide to use bar soap or liquid soap in your home simply comes down to personal preference. You won't be more protected or less protected if you choose one or the other, as long as you're <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-long-should-you-wash-your-hands">washing your hands properly</a> and for a <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-long-should-you-wash-your-hands">long enough time</a> – at least 20 seconds. It's also important to remember that <a href="https://www.insider.com/does-antibacterial-soap-kill-germs">antibacterial soap</a> is not necessarily more effective at killing <keyword id="64150" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Germs">germs</keyword> than regular soap.According to Whyte, bar soaps can accumulate some bacteria when they stay out in the open for a long time, but there's really no data to suggest any harm from it. Laundry detergent also works, but is more likely to leave soap residue. If laundry detergent is all you have, add it sparingly - about one tablespoon for each pillow - and set your machine for an extra rinse to ensure the soap is fully removed.<h3>How to wash pillows</h3><ol><li>Read the label for cleaning instructions. Unless otherwise noted, most down, feather, and polyester pillows are machine-washable. As a general guideline, if the pillows aren't machine-washable, they shouldn't be put in a dryer, either.</li><li>Remove the pillow cover and case: Set them aside to be washed separately. </li><li>Wash the pillow on a gentle cycle: The most ideal scenario is a front-loading washing machine, because the agitator (the spindle in the center) in top-loading washers can damage pillows. If you're washing machine is big enough, wash two pillows at at time to balance out the machine. Avoid fabric softener when washing any and all pillows.</li><li>Dry the pillow thoroughly: This step may take the longest, but it's the most important. To avoid mildew, throw the pillow in the dryer with dryer balls or tennis balls to keep the filling from clumping. It may take two or three cycles to get your pillows completely dry.</li></ol><h2>How often should you wash pillows?</h2>How frequently you wash your pillows really depends on how often you use them. Since bed pillows are used daily, they typically need to be washed once every season (or about four times per year) at minimum, says Richardson. Throw pillows, in comparison, can be washed once a year or more often if need be, depending on how much use they get each day.<h2>How to spot-treat pillows</h2>Buckwheat and memory foam pillows should never cleaned in a washing machine. Instead, your best bet is to spot-treat any stains as they happen. You can use a stain remover or mild soap and water. To do so, saturate the stain and gently "feather the water ring out by using a dry towel, starting in the middle and wiping from the center out."For other pillow types, and for stains like blood or saliva, you can pre-treat them with a stain remover before washing. For yellow sweat stains in particular, Richardson suggests treating the stain with oxygen bleach added to some warm wash water. And if you're looking to treat a sweat-stained throw pillow made of wool or silk, Richardson says to use sudsy ammonia in lieu of oxygen bleach.Quick tip: Use covers for both sleep and throw pillows to protect them so they don't have to be washed or dried as frequently.<h2>Keeping pillows fresh between deep cleans</h2>The easiest way to extend the life of your pillows is to invest in a pillow cover or protector. Not to be confused with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-pillowcase">pillowcase</a>, pillow covers typically have a zippered closure and are designed to be an added barrier. That way, you can simply just wash the cover or case more frequently. Aside from washing your covers and cases regularly between deep cleans, Richardson points to a not-so-obvious, yet very clever means of freshening up your beloved headrests: essential oils - or vodka. The grain-based liquor is an effective non-toxic odor neutralizer that doesn't leave any scent of its own."Either spray [your pillows] with vodka or toss them into the dryer with a wool ball scented with an essential oil" to remove any built up odors. <h2>When should you replace your pillows?</h2>So you've washed and dried your pillows endless times over the last few months or years and now they're just not quite as snuggly as they used to be, right? Well, that's when you know it's time for a swap. "If you can't fluff them back up," Richardson says, "it is time to change them. Because the coronavirus is chiefly transmitted through respiratory droplets, which get passed around in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-know-if-you-have-the-coronavirus-pcr-test-2020-1">an infected person's spit and mucus</a>, China has placed around 56 million people under quarantine, hoping that keeping people home, and having them <a href="https://www.rte.ie/news/newslens/2020/0206/1113507-china-drones-coronavirus/">wear masks when they go outside</a>, will help prevent more virus spread.But in cities and towns across Asia, sanitation workers are also redoubling efforts to spray down entire towns, sending trucks filled with low concentration bleach-and-water solutions into the streets, and dispatching hazmat-suited workers into train stations and malls to wipe every nook and cranny. <h2>Keeping hospitals and markets clean is a better way to stop the spread of novel viruses </h2>Joe Drake, president and founder of the US-based Decon Seven, said he's seen such disinfecting sprayer trucks dispatched in cities including Shanghai, Beijing, and Wuhan even before the current coronavirus outbreak.But health experts say these public displays of germ-busting are probably not doing much to help stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, and that the disinfection should instead target specific spots, like emergency rooms, and communal surfaces in hospitals, where more coronavirus germs are likely to get swapped around. For that purpose, Drake's company makes a <a href="https://www.decon7.com/the-science/">hydrogen peroxide-based cleanup product</a> that was originally developed to neutralize biological and chemical warfare agents, but is now being sent to at least six different hospitals around China, both inside and outside Hubei province. D7 kills viruses on hard surfaces as well as textiles for up to eight hours, before it degrades into non-potable water, making it far more long-lasting than a bleach and water spray. "You can foam it, you can mop it, you can put some in a pail and take a rag and wipe surfaces down, or put it in a pump spray bottle, or fog it," Drake said.In the US, his products are often used in places like poultry farms, for disinfecting before and after a new group of animals comes in to a barn. But such practices are not so widespread in China, he said. "I was actually in Wuhan in September, I was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-chinese-wet-market-photos-2020-1">in that market</a>," he said of the spot <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-sars-bats-animals-to-humans-2020-1">where scientists suspect the novel virus originally infected a human</a>. "You have live fish, you have dead fish, you have other animals in there ... There's no hygiene standards, they just rinse things down with a garden hose. That doesn't do anything. You're just basically creating a bacteria soup."Virologist and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pandemic-flu-studied-in-bird-butts-to-prevent-disaster-2019-6">bird flu expert Robert Webster</a> agreed. He said it's time to close down wet markets around the world where animals and people often mix in cramped, unsanitary conditions, and where new viruses have successfully hopped from animals into humans before. "One of the lessons that this incident - and SARS - tell us is that it's time to close the live animal markets in Asia, and in the United States, where we also have them," Webster said. "China is wealthy enough to close those down, completely." Drake wasn't so sure. "That's their culture," he said. "It's how they're used to shopping and buying things."But there are signs that the culture may be changing. Drake's Chinese distributor, which has until now only worked with Chinese hospitals and government agencies, has started fielding more calls lately from both manufacturing and food processing plants there, interested in his disinfectant."China wants to do trade with the rest of the world, including their food products, so they know they have to do this," he said.<h2>Spraying cities with bleach is not a very effective way to stop a coronavirus</h2>Seeing lines of disinfecting spray trucks cruising the streets during an outbreak, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-face-masks-not-entirely-effective-2020-1">wearing a mask as a purely preventative measure</a> (when you're not ill, and not in direct contact with sick people) may help give a false sense of security during an outbreak. But public health experts stress that those moves, which are minimally effective at best, can also direct money, supplies, and attention away from where it's needed most. "The truth is that coronaviruses have really poor survivability on surfaces," Saskia Popescu, a senior infection prevention epidemiologist who works at a Phoenix-based healthcare system, told Insider. "This is an organism that is generally spread through respiratory droplets. So that cough, that sneeze, and yes, your hands can get contaminated and then you touch your eyes, your mouth, and things like that."She said the widespread use of disinfectants like bleach - which is what was being used in truck sprayers in at least one Chinese city, Yichang, <a href="https://m.21jingji.com/article/20200204/herald/e8d38b1d27333f9ec128bc6875a9663d.html?%5Bid%5D=20200204/herald_237448.json">according to a local report</a> - is "a little over the top." "I would rather see better efforts to make sure people are disinfecting emergency rooms and high-touch surfaces in hospitals and schools more than I would want to see bleach being sprayed on streets," she said. "Honestly, think about how often do your hands or your mouth come into contact with a street?"The bleach is not just for the streets. Patients and doctors are also being disinfected after they're released from hospitals or finish a shift. Public health experts also say prioritizing even more basic, routine hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, keeping a safe distance (6 feet) from sick people, and staying home when you are sick are still <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-prevent-wuhan-coronavirus-hygiene-hand-washing-2020-2">the most effective ways to stop a virus like this from spreading further</a>. Coronaviruses only last several hours on surfaces at most, which is why <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-myths-red-meat-bleach-antibiotics-and-sesame-oil-2020-2">imported goods are not going to give you an illness</a>, but an unclean phone, a keyboard, or a doorknob could."Risk for transmission from spread through inanimate objects or contaminated surfaces is low," Popescu said. His wife Jen, 38, died two and a half years ago, after nearly a decade of illnesses, surgeries, and medical complications.Miller told Business Insider that watching <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> stories about coronavirus deaths has been painful for him — particularly when he sees images of body bags stacked up in refrigerated trucks, or buried in mass graves. And that's why I want to do my part and be able to help prevent and spare people from knowing that pain — to know what it feels like to lose somebody that you love so dearly that you basically lose a part of yourself," Miller said.Just several weeks ago, Miller went from manufacturing farm equipment to assembling face shields out of foam, elastic, and plastic sheets for doctors and nurses to wear over their masks.He's one of scores of workers across the country who are mass-producing America's masks and face shields, working long hours and often grueling rotations to produce vital equipment amid a nationwide shortage.Five workers in factories from Florida to Maine told Business Insider how their jobs have grown busier and more hectic than ever during the coronavirus pandemic. Most of the workers have had to learn a completely new skill — their factories pivoted from making items like hoodies or carseats to making medical equipment.Some told Business Insider the moment was bittersweet, saying they were frightened about potentially catching the virus at work. He recalled delivering an order of 100 face shields to a nursing home, and seeing a woman burst into tears when he arrived.Miller said he's been working six days a week to produce the face shields, and the factory has been pumping out roughly 15,000 per day, churning out each one in about 30 to 40 seconds.<div type="image" title="face shields" height="1342" width="2000" msid="75303404" hostid="261"></div>The frantic pace is familiar for one <keyword id="9097104" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lydall">Lydall</keyword> worker in New Hampshire. The worker said he has been working 13-day rotations and receiving just one day off in between.The employee is a pulper helper who works late nights creating air filtration media that forms the protective base in products like face masks and respirators. His job consists of throwing 50-pound bags of fiber into a machine that's essentially an "industrial-sized blender.""Because we make this media, and cleanliness and air filtration demand is so high, orders are coming in fast and furious for all kinds of stuff," he said. "My day-to-day duties haven't really changed much, I'm just at work more often than not now."The Lydall worker said he feels relieved to be working so many hours, since other workers across the country are enduring layoffs and shutdowns.He also said that while doctors, nurses, and first responders are being rightly praised for their work treating coronavirus patients and saving lives, he wanted to see factory workers like him get some recognition, too."I'd love for the country to know that blue-collar industrial American workers are standing tall and proud with the other workforces deemed essential," he said. The machines they normally use to cut window film are now being used to cut up massive rolls of laminate, producing roughly 5,000 shields per shift.Phrathep said he sometimes worries about getting sick, but noted that his company provides masks, gloves, and the face shields to wear. His colleagues have also been staying six feet apart from one another to reduce the risk of passing around illnesses.He said it felt gratifying to be able to rapidly produce equipment that hospitals can use immediately."I'm excited. You're helping out the world," he said.
