Including public sector enterprises, BSE500’s wage inflation slowed to 11%. In the same quarter last year, it was at 20%, says a report by <keyword id="20055355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nuvama-institutional-equities" source="keywords">Nuvama Institutional Equities</keyword>. “The worrying aspect of wage bill growth is the sharper moderation in private sector wage bill growth. Private sector wage bill growth has moderated to 9% YoY—a decadal-low (ex-Covid). Such a sharp slowdown, if it persists, could weigh on consumption, particularly the premium segment,” says <keyword id="19895773" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nuvama" source="keywords">Nuvama</keyword>’s Q3FY24 Earnings Review. Unsurprisingly, the IT sector saw the most moderation, as its wage bill growth in Q3 at just 3% year on year. In the corresponding quarter last year, it was at 22%. “For IT companies, headcount is now contracting year on year. While this could bottom out, sustained recovery is needed for its revival,” said Nuvama. As per Xpheno, the top eight IT services firms in India<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/it-bellwethers-slash-headcount-in-fy24-but-indian-techies-find-a-home-with-gccs/articleshow/107679515.cms"> reduced their headcount by</a> 75,000 in the last one year. Sectors like FMCG, metals &amp; mining, power, cement, pharma, chemicals saw single digit wage growth. “Wage bill growth is moderating in most other spaces as well. For most sectors, wage bill growth is below the levels seen a year ago,” said Nuvama. On the other hand, sectors like auto, consumer services, durables and real estate sector saw double digit wage bill growth in the quarter. BFSI sector remains an outlier The only sector which saw strong wage bill growth in Q3 is banking, financial services and insurance sector; which came in at 22%. The average annual attrition in the sector is still high, at around 30-35%. In private banks, it’s <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/business/companies/rbi-closely-watching-high-attrition-at-some-private-banks-says-shaktikanta-das-18207931.htm">much more pronounced</a> at 40-45%. While private sector banks saw their wage bill go up by 23%, in PSU banks, the growth was at 20%. Financial services, however, saw its wage bill go up by 29%. 6-7%, similar to what was seen in the first half of FY24. The earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortization (EBIDTA) growth on other hand, dwindled to 10% from 20% seen in the first half. “This is mainly due to fading input price tailwinds and operating de-leverage. PAT growth, however, held up in high teens. All in all, chinks are developing in profit momentum with EBITDA slowing sharply as margin tailwinds fade while demand fails to recover,” Nuvama said. Even as the aggregate profit growth held up to 16% YoY in Q3, a weak revenue growth does not spell good news for corporate employees who are hoping for a chunky wage hike. “Given a weak top line, wage bill growth is likely to remain subdued going ahead as well, potentially weighing on urban consumption,” says Nuvama.

India Inc’s wage bill growth halves in Q3, close to decadal lows

Mumbai, White-collar hiring witnessed an 8.6 per cent annual decline in September, following a negative trend in sectors including IT, BPO or ITES and <keyword id="34523" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fmcg" source="Orion">FMCG</keyword>, a report said on Monday. On a month-on-month basis, however, there has been a growth of almost 6 per cent in job postings. In September, there were 2,835 white-collar job postings, down by 8.6 per cent compared to the same month last year when 3,103 jobs were posted, according to <keyword id="218117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naukri-com" source="Orion">Naukri.com</keyword>'s monthly 'Naukri JobSpeak Index'. The Naukri JobSpeak is a monthly Index representing the state of the Indian job market and hiring activity based on new job listings and job-related searches by recruiters on the resume database of Naukri.com. The IT sector continued to face global headwinds and saw the hiring numbers dwindle in the last few months, the survey said, adding that <keyword id="1400942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bpo/ites" source="Orion">BPO/ITES</keyword> and FMCG also registered negative growth of 25 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively, in the period under review. "While the IT sector continues to stay impacted, robust growth in the banking sector is a bright spot. Coupled with the fact that the overall index sequentially grew 6 per cent, this underscores the resilience of the Indian job market, anchored in sectoral diversity," Naukri.com Chief Business Officer Pawan Goyal added. The report further noted that the hospitality and travel industry saw maximum growth, as families and solo travellers made the most of the monsoon season. New job offers for this sector were highest in Mumbai city with job roles for restaurant manager and guest services were in highest demand in September. Banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and healthcare sectors clocked 7 per cent yearly growth each in September. Branch manager and financial consultant roles saw maximum demand, said the report. Oil and gas and auto sectors recorded 6 per cent growth each in September compared to the same month last year, said the report. Meanwhile, the report found that the non-metro cities continued to outshine the metros for job creation in September 2023. The cities of <keyword id="6356811" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vadodara" source="Orion">Vadodara</keyword>, Ahmedabad, and <keyword id="6354779" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jaipur" source="Orion">Jaipur</keyword> experienced 4 per cent, 3 per cent and 2 per cent growth, respectively in hiring in September over the same month last year.

White-collar hiring sees 8.6% decline in September says Naukri report

Mumbai, Apr 28 () Aviation and gems and jewellery sectors face high credit risks due to the current business disruptions and prolonged recovery caused by the COVID-19 crisis, according to a report. Besides these two sectors, microfinance institutions (MFIs) and tourism and hotels industries also face high credit risks, according to the report by ICRA Ratings. It said that because of the COVID-19 crisis, the credit profile of a large number of sectors and entities has become vulnerable. "The high-risk sectors -- aviation, gems &amp; jewellery, tourism &amp; hotels, microfinance institutions -- are the ones that face severe business disruption over the immediate term and where the recovery is more likely to be prolonged," the rating agency's Head (Credit Policy) Jitin Makkar said. The medium-risk sectors that include automobile OEMs (original equipment manufactures) and auto-ancillaries, construction, consumer durables and power, among others, face relatively lower degree of business disruptions and credit risks. The rating agency, however, expects that the after-effects of the COVID-19 crisis on these sectors may not persist for long. The sectors that face low risk are agri-products, education, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and telecom. "These industries are unlikely to face material business disruption, or a material increase in credit risks over the near term, triggered solely by the COVID-19 crisis," Makkar said. The agency said that amid the current coronavirus-induced crisis scenario, it is undertaking a review of its portfolio of ratings by following an approach that involves risk assessment both at the sector level as well as the entity level. Aside from undertaking a review of the liquidity position of the rated entities over the near term, ICRA may also redraw its projections for various cases, by assuming that a 'business as usual' operating environment may not return soon. "Subsequent to our FY2020 ratings action, the current COVID-19 pandemic triggered crisis has led to a widespread deterioration in the credit quality of India Inc. The credit challenges are overwhelming and would impact the credit profiles of a large number of entities across sectors in an unprecedented manner," Makkar said. There is a lot of uncertainty as regards the acuteness of the impact and much would depend on how quickly the pandemic is contained, the measures taken by the government to soften the harmful impact, and the dynamics of the individual sectors, he said. ICRA said the credit quality of India Inc faced headwinds in 2019-20 due to economic slowdown coupled with sluggish consumption and investment demand, which led to increase in rating downgrades. Ratings of 584 entities were downgraded in 2019-20, reflecting a downgrade rate of 16 per cent which was significantly higher than the past five-year average of 9 per cent. The volume of debt downgraded in 2019-20 was also high at Rs 7 lakh crore and was more than double the previous financial year's figure of Rs 3 lakh crore. This was mainly because of the downgrade in ratings of several financial sector entities, including housing finance companies, non-banking finance companies and private sector banks, the rating agency said. People talk, discuss, debate, and analyse things over a cup of tea. Cups also cater to different social strata and have the advantage of being comfortably placed in the customer's hand for a good five to seven minutes. Hence, CupShup saw every non-branded cup as a wasted opportunity for consumer engagement. ‘It’s hard not to observe our chai cups -- because a chai is an emotion that we all love and bond over,’ says Sanil Jain, Co-founder, CupShup. And it was at a Chai Tapri that Jain and <keyword id="380793" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sidharth-Singh">Sidharth Singh</keyword>, the two Co-founders of CupShup, decided to convert ‘A Cup’ into ‘The Cup’. They were struggling to come up with an idea for their college project and that’s when they had their eureka moment. “The idea dawned on Sidharth. He asked me, 'What if we brand these plain paper cups and convert the tea breaks into discussion joints for brands?' Post that, we had a chat about movies and politics for about 15 minutes. It came to our mind that we just spent 15 minutes of our quality time which was relaxed, clutter-free, and the environment was fun-filled. This was a perfect place or medium where a brand would want to promote itself,” recalls Jain. The startup aims to convert these 10-15 minutes of tea breaks into an opportunity for brands to get attention from their target audience and be part of their daily, relaxed conversations. While Jain immediately realized the potential behind this idea, the next toughest step was testing it out with minimum investment. “Since it was very difficult to get a small number of cups custom-printed, Sidharth bought around 100 cups, added stickers of a nearby restaurant on them with an offer and distributed it to the nearby chai tapris. He later interviewed around 50 odd people at the tapris and found himself surprised by the result of the product validation survey -- it was fantastic. Almost all of the people he spoke to were able to recall the brand and the offer on the cup, when aided. Thus, we established our idea has the potential and brands will be attracted towards this unique method of promotion,” shares Jain. CupShup bootstrapped itself and used a sum of ₹1 lakh, each founder contributed a half, into hiring a team, building the infrastructure, launching an application, and establishing a distribution system. It was after its first campaign with Ola that CupShup turned into a profitable company and that opportunity spearheaded its growth ahead. Since then, CupShup has been able to grow organically to a team of 50 people -- based in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. For the current financial year, Jain says, 50% of its revenues will come from activation services, 35% from Cup branding and the rest 15% from Creative and Digital services. So far, CupShup has seen more than 150 clients including Amazon, Uber, Ola, Unilever, SBI, Kotak, ICICI, Swiggy, Dunzo, HotStar, Marico, Coke, Zomato, OYO Rooms, Grofers, Pocket Aces, Viacom, TVF, ZEE. The agency recently concluded a campaign with Hotstar for their web-series, ‘<keyword id="94523" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Office">The Office</keyword>’, for which it distributed 25 lakhs paper cups with nine humorously designed creatives, each with a witty designation aimed to strike light conversations inside offices.

 While the team has worked with brands across sectors, start-ups remain their favourite. “Be it FMCG, BFSI, Entertainment, we have worked with them all. However, clients who are most receptive and open to experimenting are start-ups. While established clients make our offerings part of their 360 degree campaigns, new age brands and start-ups not just use our medium but also use our services in media planning, buying and creatives. Other than Cup Branding, they are also eager to explore our other offerings like Digital Screens and corporate activations,” said Jain. Challenges of Starting Up CupShup only had a lakh to set the ball rolling. While finding good talent was a task with limited infrastructure, convincing corporates was not a cakewalk either. “Initially, offices in corporate parks were reluctant to give us entry into their buildings as they were skeptical about the quality of paper being used by us. However, with time they are aware of the fact that we only use water based ink on our biodegradable and recyclable paper cups. This helped us understand their concerns and in accessing the office cubicles with ease,” said Jain. To spread the word around and get more attention from their client, CupShup reached out to various start-up specific news portals and networking events. Jain also sent a monthly newsletter to their client base to update them about CupShup’s work progress. Slowly, as CupSup started working with bigger brands, its communication strategy broadened to entire marketing and advertising community. Expanding its Call-to-Action Clients only look out for end results and measurable outcomes. So what kind of ROI does CupShup offer? “While most of the established brands use our medium as part of their 360-degree campaigns focused on grabbing eyeballs and building brand recalls, many new age brands and start-ups use our services to acquire new users and drive App downloads, and transactions as well. Since a tea break allows a brand exposure time of 5-7 minutes, we also use call-to action methods like QR codes, Missed Call to SMS and so on, for lead generation. But yes, this method of branding grabs attention, drives a positive ROI and triggers a conversation,” answers Jain. Plan Ahead After a smooth run in FY 2018-19 with ₹4.5 crore in Revenues, CupShup is now projected to clock ₹12 crore this financial year on the back of its strong clientele. CupShup is now scaling its network, activation services, and ramping up the creative services portfolio. It is also working on a digital product, which is slated to go live early next year. While Jain did not share the name or idea behind it, he said their product will ‘aim at revolutionising the way digital marketing is done in India.’

Your work does not stop after you’ve invested in a mutual fund. You need to monitor your <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> with as much care as you took to select them. The performance of <keyword id="6357979" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds">mutual funds</keyword> can change over time and you must take appropriate action. Keep in mind to periodically carry out the following actions to keep your investments in the pink of health: 
 
1. Track your portfolio 
The first thing you need to check is whether you have received the account statement from your mutual fund (MF) company. You might receive it from them either as a hard copy by post or as an email statement. Verify the amount invested and scheme name including the plan. 
Mutual fund companies will also regularly send you announcements related to your investments along with various promotional announcements. But don’t ignore them; especially watch out for mandate changes and mergers of schemes. Besides affecting the reason for your selection, scheme mergers could also lead to costs in terms of short-term capital gains. 
 If you’re investing regularly, like a SIP, you need to be careful about recording the NAVs and dates of purchases for tax purposes. Use an Excel spreadsheet at a minimum. Or you could also use free ‘portfolio tracker’ tools given by websites such as Money Control or <keyword id="6363100" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yahoo">Yahoo</keyword> Finance. 
 
2. Monitor performance 
While a short-term blip in performance should not bother a long-term investor, you need to take cognizance of it. For often, you witness a slippage in relative performance of a fund that was top rated at the time of investment. Keep track of relative fund performance on a regular basis and exit on signs of consistent underperformance. We would recommend evaluating your portfolio afresh every year. There is no reason to invest in a fund in 2015 just because you invested in it in 2014. Use the evaluation process we discussed earlier in this series.

The fund houses are required by <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword> to inform the investors of such changes. While the exit of a fund manager might not matter if the stock and bond picking processes are in place in a mutual fund house, large-scale exodus of fund managers or its CIO is a cause for alarm. Investors in such funds are advised to closely monitor fund happenings and exit on any signs of slippage in fund performance. 
 
4. Fund house mergers/ acquisitions 
There have been quite a few mergers and acquisitions in the Indian MF industry. For instance, Zurich mutual fund was taken over by HDFC MF more than a decade back. Investors are advised to keep tab of such M&amp;As in the MF industry. Many a time, post such merger or even otherwise, fund managers are changed, schemes merged or the nature of its investment mandate tweaked. As per SEBI rules, existing investors have to be compulsorily informed of such developments with options to exit (if it is a close-ended fund). Investors should ensure that the merged scheme meets your criteria of consistent performance and its fund mandate matches your investment needs. 
 
5. Significant portfolio changes Investing is a dynamic process and a fund manager occasionally shuffles his portfolio to adjust to varying business conditions and economic outlook. Sometimes, a fund might be overweight on sector like oil and gas and at other time <keyword id="34523" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> goods. An investor in a diversified equity fund need not worry about the same as it is part and parcel of fund management. However, if you notice any abnormality – like say a very high exposure to a single sector or stock than its peer funds – it should be cause for alarm. It signifies that a fund manager is taking undue risk on the portfolio to generate returns. 
 
However, if you have invested in a sector fund, say banking or infrastructure, focus on the overall sector outlook. Newspapers, magazines and investment websites are dime a dozen giving a good collection of viewpoints that could help in your opinion making. As a rule, stay away from sector funds that you don’t understand. 
 
To repeat: You must track and review your investments periodically for best results. Trust the professionals to manage your money but keep a watch on them.

EVs hold investor attention even as startup funding drops sharply in H1 2023

This has reportedly been fueled by the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and initiatives by the government, says a <keyword id="133742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="teamlease" source="Orion">Teamlease</keyword> report. According to the TeamLease Employment Outlook Report for Q4, Bengaluru and Mumbai have emerged as the cities with the highest hiring sentiment in the services and manufacturing sectors respectively. “Surplus public investment in PLI schemes, the Indian Government's asset monetization programme, increased private participation in key sectors, and the revisions in FDI laws in the defence and telecom sectors has fueled growth in companies across sectors, especially in Tier 1 and Tier 2 locations. Companies are therefore shoring up their talent pool to meet their increasing requirements,” said Kartik Narayan, chief executive officer, TeamLease Services. TeamLease Services is one of the country’s leading human resource companies and offers its services to over 3,500 employers. In the services sector, Bengaluru tops the list with 97% of employers expressing a higher hiring interest, followed by Chennai with 94%, Delhi with 90%, Hyderabad with 86% and Mumbai with 85%. When it comes to the manufacturing sector, Mumbai tops the list with 97% of employers expressing a higher hiring sentiment, followed by Bengaluru with 94%, Chennai with 89%, Delhi with 84% and Pune with 73%. Bengaluru and Mumbai have emerged as ‘sweet spots’ from a holistic perspective across sectors. Bengaluru, Mumbai sunshine locations for hiring in Q4: Teamlease report

New Delhi, Feb 18 () Shree Cement will replace private lender Yes Bank in the benchmark index Nifty 50 from March 27, NSE Indices, a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), said on Tuesday. Further, Vodafone Idea, Ashok Leyland, Indiabulls Housing Finance, L&amp;T Finance Holdings and Shree Cement will be dropped from Nifty Next 50, NSE Indices said in a statement. Adani Transmission, IDBI Bank, Info Edge (India) Ltd, Larsen &amp; Toubro Infotech and Torrent Pharmaceuticals would be added in Nifty Next 50 index. Changes have been made in several indices including Nifty 500, Nifty 200, Nifty 100, Nifty Midcap 150, Nifty Smallcap 250 and host of sectoral indices including FMCG, IT, media, pharma, commodities and services sector. NSE Indices' Index Maintenance Sub-Committee has decided to make the replacement of stocks in various indices as part of its periodic review. These changes would become effective from March 27, 2020. Also, NSE Indices has revised the eligibility criteria for inclusion in Nifty's 17 sectoral indices. Under the new criteria, companies should be a part of Nifty 500 at the time of review. In case, the number of eligible stocks representing a particular sector within Nifty 500 falls below 10, then deficit number of stocks shall be selected from the universe of stocks ranked within top 800 based on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation based on previous six months period data used for index. Divi’s Labs Drug firm, Divi’ ’s Laboratories, reported a 45.63% rise in its consolidated net profit to ₹519.59 crore for the quarter ended September 30, mainly on account of robust sales. Consolidated total income stood at ₹1,762.94 crore compared to ₹1,492.60 crore for the same period a year ago. The shares of Divi’s Labs ended 0.40% higher on Friday. Biocon Kiran Mazumdar Shaw-led Biocon’s subsidiary, Biocon Biologics, had received a ₹1,125 crore investment from Goldman Sachs. This capital injection will enable Biocon Biologics to make prudent investments in R&amp;D, high-quality manufacturing, as well as, establish a global commercial footprint, the company said. Lakshmi Vilas Bank Private sector Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) reported a net loss of ₹397 crore in the second quarter ended September 30 due to a rise in bad loans and provisions. Sequentially, the loss widened against ₹112.28 crore in the June quarter of this fiscal. The company also decided to restructure its business; it would transfer 100% of the B2B businesses to its wholly-owned subsidiary — Rohini Industrial Electricals Ltd (RIEL). The shares of Voltas ended 1% higher on Friday. Vedanta Vedanta reported a 61.8% decline in consolidated net profit to ₹824 crore for the quarter ended September 30, on the back of one-time tax expense. The decline came despite the stellar 33% growth in its revenue to ₹20,804 crore during the quarter under review. The shares of Vedanta ended 0.21% higher on Friday. Tata Consumer Products Tata Consumer Products reported an 18% rise in consolidated net profit to ₹234.33 crore for the quarter ended September 30, helped by an increase in domestic sales and volumes. It also has some advices for marketers around how to navigate the uncertain times. The economic impact of the virus S&amp;P had lowered India's 2020 growth forecast from 5.7% to 5.2%. This was before the Covid-19. Ruchir Sharma, a renowned economist pegged the economic impact of Covid-19 as worse than the 2008 financial meltdown and similar to 'The Great Depression of 1930'. He expects World Economy to shrink by 1% and China after a contracted Q1 to grow at 2%. He feels India would be lucky to grow at 2%. Sakhuja in the report said that they have observed broadly that consumption de-growth rate is much higher than GDP de-growth rate. If so, a 3% drop in GDP (from 5% to 2%) could imply a very dramatic drop in consumption! This is affected by a combination of supply chain issues, less cash in hand and overall negative sentiment. This could lead to some significant reductions in sales, which will be sectoral. Categories which will bear the direct brunt are the ones involving social contact. Thus Airlines, Railways, Tourism, Restaurants, Retail, Auto and Live Sport &amp; Entertainment will become casualties. FMCG grew 1% during January 2020, down from 2.4% in the previous year. Urban growth at 0.2%, dragged down the entire segment even as hinterland consumption remained the same at 1.8% (Source: Kantar Worldpanel). “We don't expect Covid-19 to have an incremental adverse effect on FMCG. Here, supply chain issues rather than consumer headwinds are the factor to watch out for,” stated the report. Financial markets are worried that retail loans will have higher defaults. Most financial Institutions could go slow on disbursement of retail loans. This is expected to have negative impact on sales of durables and mobile phones - categories that were fuelled by easy availability of 'Zero Interest EMI’s!’ Real estate and jewellery too would be impacted by sentiment with consumers postponing high value purchases. This assumes that the Covid-19 situation can be brought under control within 4-6 weeks. Consumer behaviour during virus in terms of Media, Purchase and Sentiment TV ratings will go up as people are staying home. The BARC report for the period March 8-14 captured two and a half days of the virus taking hold. The first of the WFH started from Monday, March 16 2020. Even before people were forced to be at home, HSM TV viewership had gone up 4% v/s the earlier week in HSM, and 8% for TN, AP. Within HSM, across TGs, clear increases in viewership in Hindi News, Hindi Movies, Kids, Hindi GEC 2 &amp; English Niche. There was some drop in viewership in Hindi mainline GEC &amp; Sports (expectedly). No significant change in FTA viewership. As the lockdown continues, there’s expected to be a significant increase in TV viewership. However there is a ban on fresh serial production, GEC channels will run out of fresh programming and have started reruns. This may depress high viewership and may cancel some gains of more viewers watching more TV. It will be 3 weeks before we see BARC impact of re-runs. Most channels will be willing to protect CPRPs in case Ratings fall in this period. Digital viewing will also go up. In the week of March 9-15 v/s March 2-8 top 40 online news sites recorded a 23% growth v/s March 2-8 and 31% growth v/s January 6-12. OTT and YouTube will also increase. With increased supply on biddable platforms CPMs will come down. OOH and cinema will fall. Apart from reduced footfalls there are also some cities like Mumbai which came out with a ruling to display only <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> sites that will contract supply. Most events have been cancelled which will have a devastating impact on this sector. Over and above, the visible impact of IPL, another Rs 3,000 crore worth of events are facing cancellation. E-commerce will go up, especially for daily essentials. People may avoid shopping for stuff touched by hand. During this period, consumers can be expected to be less distracted and more mindful of messages and more open to promotions. They will buy what they need rather than desire, and given the uncertainty, will have a tendency to hold on to their money. Talking about payments to media, the report said that Madison has proactively sensitized IBF and INS on delays in payments on 60th day in March. While Media will be understanding, delays needs to be the exception, with good reason provided. Impact on AdEx In its report that it had released in February, Madison had predicted that AdEx in 2020 could increase from 67600 to 74650 (+10.4%) - with a 5% growth in traditional and 28% growth in Digital. However, this was before the Covid-19 outbreak and the media agency said there is a need to review it now. Speaking about the impact of the current situation on AdEx, the report said, “In a state of steady GDP growth (6-8%), AdEx grows about double GDP. When GDP falls, the AdEx falls much more than GDP fall in the next year. Conversely when GDP growth picks up, AdEx growth picks up even more. When we had projected a 10.4% AdEx growth in PMAR 2020, we had assumed a GDP growth of 4-5% till September and 7% beyond that. It is reasonably certain that GDP growth will be lower. If the GDP growth does fall till 2%, we may see an overall shrinking of AdEx by 0-5%.” How sector-wise AdEx will shape up <div type="image" title="Sector wise" msid="74886498" hostid="261"></div>
 Advice for advertisers <ul><li>Invest in staying close to the consumer. Employ listening tools to capture category and brand sentiment.</li><li> The silver lining of this pandemic is that consumers are open to advertising. If you have messages that are relevant for consumers, you should air them. Do not be opportunistic, building trust is more important than short term sales.</li><li> We should aim to get audience assurances on TV deals, and with increased Online Supply of Biddable inventory, CPMs will be low. From an efficiency standpoint it's a good time to advertise.</li><li> Good time for moment marketing. Contextual placement and intelligent re-targeting can work.</li><li> If P&amp;L pressures are forcing a cut in budget, then make active trade-offs rather than merely scaling down plans pro-rata.</li><li> Invest in promoting sales on e-commerce.</li><li> Marketing messaging needs to be authentic, topical, one that builds trust and reassures. In the times of Covid, marketing needs to be controlled and not viral.</li></ul>

While urban Indians might be buying fewer cars and staying away from jewels, many basic essentials are vanishing from rural homes--be it biscuits, clothes and hair oil. Data shows that 833 million rural Indians have all but stalled buying clothes. “In the last one year the weighted contribution of clothing which is a non-discretionary item plunged from 39 bps in June 20118 to almost zero in June and July 2019, indicating demand slowdown,” says a report by SBI Ecowrap. Villagers are screwing caps on essentials as well. "The slowdown in hair oils is led by moderation in rural growth. The volume growth in the rural area is now at 4.8%,” said Sumit Malhotra, CEO of Bajaj Consumer after its first quarter earnings report. Rural consumption hit by wage decline The rural wages have not been growing at all. “The real rural wage growth plunged from 14.6% in 2013-14 to a mere 1.1% in 2018-19,” said SBI Ecowrap. As many as 65,000 villages contribute as much as half of overall of fast-moving consumer goods sales in India. Due to the rural slowdown, biscuits as a category, is growing at a dismal 1%, says an Axis bank report. ”Rural stress led to moderation of rural demand growth which peaked to around 1.5 times of urban growth few quarters back,” said a report by Aditya Birla Capital on FMCG sectoral review in the first quarter. Finance Ministry’s stimulus will take time to reach villages The government has started taking cognizance of slow growth across the country. And, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has kicked off a slew of measures to kickstart the economy, and one of them being ₹70,000 crore capital to public sector banks, and rolling back on additional tax surcharge on investors that was imposed during the Budget. “We are cautiously optimistic on the rural, but we'll continue to steer the course on the strategy that we've defined for ourselves as far as rural is concerned. If the government spending and the stimulus reaches out the rural, then it will be great," said Mohit Malhotra, CEO of Dabur. However, for the stimulus to reach rural areas will be a long and arduous journey trickling from banks to non-banking financial institutions.
