Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

India Inc. stares at an earnings dearth in Q2, FMCG, auto, and consumer durables falter

India's services sector showed robust expansion in October, per the <keyword id="22267674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HSBC-India-Services-PMI" source="keywords">HSBC India Services PMI</keyword> (Purchasing Managers' Index), which rose to 58.5 last month, up from September's ten-month low of 57.7. October's figures managed to exceed even the long-run PMI average of 54.1, largely on the back of a strong sales pipeline and elevated demand. Employment, or job creation in this sector accelerated to its fastest growth rate in 26 months. Anticipating solid, sustained demand in the near term, firms added new employees at the most rapid pace in over 2 years. October also saw <keyword id="23834175" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="input-costs-rise" source="keywords">input costs rise</keyword> at their fastest pace in 3 months, indicating renewed demand and economic activity in the country. The ISM Services PMI, an indicator of the economic health of the US, also exceeded expectations, reaching 56.0 compared to the forecasted 53.8, suggesting strong growth within the services sector. "During October, the Indian services sector experienced strong expansions in output and consumer demand, as well as job creation, which achieved a 26-month high," said Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC. The sector saw increased business activity across multiple fronts, with export sales showing significant growth and companies reporting stronger demand from international markets including Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and the UK. However, industry experts remain cautiously optimistic about the sector's prospects. Suman Chowdhury, Chief Economist at Acuité Ratings &amp; Research, noted that while the October recovery is promising, several factors warrant careful monitoring. “The recovery in the PMI indices in October 2024 is promising for the second half of the fiscal after the dip in several high-frequency indicators in September 2024. Industrial and service activity has expectedly received a boost from the anticipated spike in consumption demand in Q3 FY25, driven by the festivities and the marriage season," she said. Chowdhury added that it will be crucial to monitor the sustainability of these PMI indices at these elevated levels, given the reported weakness in urban demand in Q2 as flagged by FMCG companies. She also noted that potential increases in wholesale and core retail inflation, combined with higher input costs and wage pressures, could delay expected interest rate cuts. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das also noted that inflation and CPI figures for October might be elevated, pushing ahead any chances of interest rate cuts in the near future. Acuité Ratings &amp; Research maintains its GDP growth forecast at 7.0% for FY25 while acknowledging the multiple downside risks that will require close observation in the coming months.

India's Services Index jumps to 58.5 in October as employment grows the fastest in 26 months

However, the report cautioned that this could be due to an impacted base of July 2023, when there was an atypical dip in hiring activity on account of <keyword id="19916570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-sector" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="IT sector" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="IT sector">IT sector</keyword>'s woes. The IT sector experienced a healthy 17 % growth in July, compared to the year-ago period, while the artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI-ML) sector continued its robust performance with a remarkable 47 % year-on-year increase, it added. Further, Gujarat continued to lead the pack with Rajkot, Jamnagar and Baroda recording 39%, 38% and 25% growth, respectively. Hyderabad emerged as a key hub for job creation across multiple key industries, including hospitality (76%), insurance (71%), BPO (52%) and oil and gas (44%). Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam have reported a healthy sequential growth of 13 % and 14 %, respectively, said the report. "The robust 12 % growth in hiring activity is a much-awaited, encouraging sign for this financial year. This is the first month this year that we have seen positive growth, and the fact that it is secular, cutting across sectors and geographies, makes it truly promising. This broad-based, positive shift could potentially be the onset of an upcycle in the Indian white-collar job market," Naukri Chief Business Officer Pawan Goyal added.

Hiring activity up 12% in July, most sectors report double-digit growth, says a Naukri.com report

India's diversified entity <keyword id="19896958" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ITC" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="ITC">ITC</keyword> plans to open more hotels overseas with neighbouring countries and the Middle East as primary target markets after opening of its first international property here, company Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="20049280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjiv-Puri" source="keywords">Sanjiv Puri</keyword> said on Thursday. The company's arm <keyword id="20032522" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITC-Hotels" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ITC Hotels" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="ITC Hotels">ITC Hotels</keyword>, which had opened 22 new properties in the last 24 months, plans to add another 70 hotels in the next five years in India as part of expansion plans in the <keyword id="20402233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hospitality-sector" source="keywords">hospitality sector</keyword>. Besides the hotels business, the company will look for opportunities to expand the presence of <keyword id="19931572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="FMCG" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="FMCG">FMCG</keyword> and other verticals in new overseas markets as well. "We are open to exploring opportunities that come about. I think we have strong credentials in hospitality which we can take outside India now. Very clearly at the moment the focus is on proximal markets, be it for hospitality, be it for FMCG...," Puri said here at a press conference after the opening of the 352-room luxury property, <keyword id="20911944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itc-ratnadipa" source="keywords">ITC Ratnadipa</keyword> here. He said as the company explores and understands a place for a particular business, it may look at it as a market for other verticals as well. Citing the example of Nepal, Puri said,"We started with other businesses and are now looking at hospitality (there). Here (in Sri Lanka) we have started with hospitality...as we explore and understand the place, we will look at possibilities in some of our other sectors as well." On overseas expansion of the hospitality business, while the company's focus is more on 'proximal markets', he said,"We are open to it if there are some interesting opportunities beyond it. We will certainly be interested in pursuing that." When asked if ITC is looking at the Middle East as a market for the hospitality business, he said it is a vibrant economy right now with terrific growth plans and "if opportunity comes our way then we will certainly explore that". Puri also said the company will look to expand in more destinations in Sri Lanka going forward. "This (opening of ITC Ratnadipa) is the starting point and yes, we want to expand and grow the economy and contribute to the development of tourism in Sri Lanka," he said. When asked about ITC's overall expansion plans in the hospitality sector, he said,"We have a very healthy pipeline of 70 hotels in five years." All these 70 hotels are for the Indian domestic market and most of them will be the upscale segments. He, however, said "(For) overseas we're just starting our journey. So we have not yet got to the stage to start putting a number right here." On investments planned for the overall expansion, he did not share a specific number but said "between renovation and new properties will spend somewhere between Rs 700 crore to Rs 1,000 crore a year". When asked about the progress of the demerger of ITC Hotels and its planned public listing, Puri said it is happening in line with the indicated timelines and is expected "before the second half of this year or the end of this year". At its new property here, the company had invested about USD 500 million. It was inaugurated on Thursday by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The ITC Ratnadipa or 'Island of Gems' has 352 guest rooms, suites and service apartments, each with private balconies with waterfront views. Earlier in the day, speaking at the opening of the new hotel, Puri said,"It is very natural for us to specifically focus on markets in proximal areas, encouraged also by our Prime Minister's (Narendra Modi) vision of neighbourhood first where Sri Lanka has a very special position. ITC is deeply committed to growing our presence and contributing to hospitality in the region." ITC plans to open more hotels overseas: CMD Sanjiv Puri

A day before the official release of India's Gross Domestic Product (<keyword id="35050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP" source="Orion">GDP</keyword>) figures for <keyword id="21593310" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1-FY25" source="keywords">Q1 FY25</keyword>, a report by <keyword id="20548750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand-Rathi" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Anand Rathi" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Anand Rathi">Anand Rathi</keyword> research estimates the GDP to grow by 7 per cent, primarily driven by the robust performance of the services sector. The financial advisory firm also maintains its full-year <keyword id="19972825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP-growth" source="keywords">GDP growth</keyword> projection at 7 per cent, though it warns of potential downside risks. Utilities GVA is expected to rise by 11.5 per cent, while the construction sector has slowed due to election-related disruptions and the impact of heat. The mining sector remains strong, supported by increased coal production. The services sector is expected to be the primary driver of GDP growth in Q1 FY25. Despite reduced <keyword id="20155204" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-spending" source="keywords">government spending</keyword> ahead of the elections, which is likely to dampen growth in some service sectors, financial, real estate, and professional services are expected to have performed well. This performance is attributed to strong market activity and credit growth. However, the trade and transport sectors present a mixed picture, with some indicators showing improvement while others remain moderate. Overall, Services Gross Value Added (GVA) is expected to grow by 8.2 per cent in Q1 FY25. As per the report, Investment was a key growth driver in FY24, fuelled by government infrastructure projects and a real estate upswing. However, the momentum appears to have slowed in Q1 FY25 due to pre-election restrictions. Despite this, the report predicts a significant rise in government capital expenditure in the coming months, supported by greater budget allocations. The report highlights the changing dynamics of private consumption in India. FY24 saw weak consumption, especially in rural areas, with final consumption expenditure growing by just 3.8 per cent. However, as FY25 begins, there are signs of a rural revival. Indicators such as increased two-wheeler sales and improving Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) volume growth signal a rebound in rural demand. In contrast, urban demand continues to show signs of sluggishness. The muted sales of passenger vehicles, weaker retail credit transfers, and flat Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections underscore this trend. While consumption is not expected to see a significant rise in Q1 FY25, the outlook for the remainder of the year appears positive. This optimism is bolstered by anticipated higher agricultural output and sharper government focus on rural areas. The agriculture sector is expected to post a subdued growth of 2.1 per cent in Q1 FY25, affected by scorching heat and uneven rainfall last year, which led to lower reservoir levels and hindered farming activities. However, the outlook is more promising for the remainder of the fiscal year, with better rains and improved sowing conditions expected to boost agricultural output Additionally, a rebound in stamp duty collections suggests buoyant real estate sales. Private capital expenditure, which was previously subdued, is expected to expand in FY25, driven by rising capacity utilisation and strong order books. The industrial sector, which grew by 9.5 per cent in FY24, is expected to see a shift in growth drivers in Q1 FY25. The focus is now moving towards utilities and mining, with manufacturing growth slowing. While government infrastructure projects and private capital expenditure will continue to support industrial growth, the global growth slowdown poses potential risks.

Anand Rathi anticipates Q1 FY25 GDP growth at 7%, a little lower than RBI's estimate of 7.1%

<ul><li>FMCG companies are expected to register strong margins in Q1 as they will see the full effect of earlier-taken price hikes playing out. Cooling raw material prices will help. </li><li>Demand for staples have been stable, but the beauty and personal care category has not yet recovered fully. </li><li>The summer has seen a decline or low growth in ice creams and juices due to unseasonal rains. </li></ul>With cooling raw material costs, the FMCG sector is expected to kick in the first quarter of FY24 with ‘good quality’ profits, backed by improvement in margins. Input costs have been cooling over the last few quarters and have either remained stable or seen mild moderation, and companies have not been passing them off very generously in the form of price cuts. “We expect most of the companies to register stronger sequential gross profit margin (GPM) improvement in 1Q24F with input cost inflation cooling down further, high-priced inventory getting consumed and the full effect of earlier-taken price hikes playing out,” said a research report by Nomura. Certain categories such as hair oils, edible oils and soaps had witnessed price cuts in earlier quarters, which will flow through in the first quarter, as per BNP Paribas. Also, new price cuts and promotions were seen in laundry, edible oils and other home care categories during the quarter but no major price cuts were seen in biscuits and salts. Double digit revenue growth expected Price cuts and volume growth for the sector are directly proportional for the sector, and as of now most of growth seen in the sector was pricing-led. But that’s changing, analysts say. Demand from urban areas has been stable, with slight sequential improvement in rural demand as well. Also, the demand for staples have been stable, but the beauty and personal care category has not yet recovered though improving due to the price cuts. All in all, the sector should be able to present a good revenue growth for the quarter – notwithstanding the cooler summer this April-June with unseasonal rains that affected sales of juices and ice creams. “We estimate staples/discretionary (ex-ITC) pack to register 10.2%/8.8% revenue growth. We expect a good quarter from Nestle, Godrej Consumers and ITC and a weak print from Marico,” says a report by Kotak. Antique Stock Broking also expects the FMCG sector (not including ITC) to report early double digit revenue growth with moderation in pricing led growth. ITC is expected to see a fall in revenue as its agri business is expected to see a drop due to high-base effects. Nomura expects Nestle, Tata Consumers and Dabur to report the highest revenue growth YoY, and with ITC and Marico to post lower value growth. as analysts believe that the sector is poised for a good show in the first half of FY24 with a raw material cost tailwind. “However, in the second half of FY24 we expect revenue growth to moderate as pricing benefits should fade and growth would have to be volume-led,” said a report by BNP Paribas. There has been no aggressive price war as of now in the sector as of now, but if price cuts are not taken by large players in the segment, it might lead to unorganized players gaining market share. In the last one year, many consumers have ‘downtraded’ to unbranded products or local brands during periods of high inflation. “Prices of most stock keeping units (SKUs) have increased sharply over the last two years. Soap and detergent prices have risen 40-50% over that period. So far the price cuts have been limited and largely confined to the value segment. We believe price cuts might be needed to drive volumes,” said BNP Paribas. FMCG sector Q1 preview — Caught between price cuts and volume growth

Including public sector enterprises, BSE500’s wage inflation slowed to 11%. In the same quarter last year, it was at 20%, says a report by <keyword id="20055355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nuvama-institutional-equities" source="keywords">Nuvama Institutional Equities</keyword>. “The worrying aspect of wage bill growth is the sharper moderation in private sector wage bill growth. Private sector wage bill growth has moderated to 9% YoY—a decadal-low (ex-Covid). Such a sharp slowdown, if it persists, could weigh on consumption, particularly the premium segment,” says <keyword id="19895773" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nuvama" source="keywords">Nuvama</keyword>’s Q3FY24 Earnings Review. Unsurprisingly, the IT sector saw the most moderation, as its wage bill growth in Q3 at just 3% year on year. In the corresponding quarter last year, it was at 22%. “For IT companies, headcount is now contracting year on year. While this could bottom out, sustained recovery is needed for its revival,” said Nuvama. As per Xpheno, the top eight IT services firms in India<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/it-bellwethers-slash-headcount-in-fy24-but-indian-techies-find-a-home-with-gccs/articleshow/107679515.cms"> reduced their headcount by</a> 75,000 in the last one year. Sectors like FMCG, metals &amp; mining, power, cement, pharma, chemicals saw single digit wage growth. “Wage bill growth is moderating in most other spaces as well. For most sectors, wage bill growth is below the levels seen a year ago,” said Nuvama. On the other hand, sectors like auto, consumer services, durables and real estate sector saw double digit wage bill growth in the quarter. BFSI sector remains an outlier The only sector which saw strong wage bill growth in Q3 is banking, financial services and insurance sector; which came in at 22%. The average annual attrition in the sector is still high, at around 30-35%. In private banks, it’s <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/business/companies/rbi-closely-watching-high-attrition-at-some-private-banks-says-shaktikanta-das-18207931.htm">much more pronounced</a> at 40-45%. While private sector banks saw their wage bill go up by 23%, in PSU banks, the growth was at 20%. Financial services, however, saw its wage bill go up by 29%. 6-7%, similar to what was seen in the first half of FY24. The earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortization (EBIDTA) growth on other hand, dwindled to 10% from 20% seen in the first half. “This is mainly due to fading input price tailwinds and operating de-leverage. PAT growth, however, held up in high teens. All in all, chinks are developing in profit momentum with EBITDA slowing sharply as margin tailwinds fade while demand fails to recover,” Nuvama said. Even as the aggregate profit growth held up to 16% YoY in Q3, a weak revenue growth does not spell good news for corporate employees who are hoping for a chunky wage hike. “Given a weak top line, wage bill growth is likely to remain subdued going ahead as well, potentially weighing on urban consumption,” says Nuvama.

India Inc’s wage bill growth halves in Q3, close to decadal lows

<ul><li>Volume contraction for the FMCG sector was more pronounced in rural areas, says a <keyword id="87153" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bnp-paribas" source="Orion">BNP Paribas</keyword> report. </li><li>While the research firm expects margin improvement in FY24, its earnings estimates are below consensus on account of INR depreciation, increase in ad spends and selective price cuts. </li><li>We think consensus earnings estimates for FY24/25 are too optimistic, the report says. </li><li>The valuation multiples of Indian FMCG companies have expanded since June 2022, BNP Paribas says. </li></ul>Consumer goods majors have been hit hard by inflation over the last few quarters, with volume growth taking a backseat. Clearly, growth has been driven by multiple price hikes that were taken by the players – and not volume growth. The road ahead looks better as commodity prices are cooling and price cuts could even spur consumption. In spite of the fact that affluent India’s consumption is holding up well, volumes from mass-market and categories that benefitted from Covid like healthcare and hygiene segments <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/article/inflation-burns-a-hole-in-the-pockets-of-indias-lower-income-households-from-fmcg-goods-flip-flops-to-crackers-consumption-takes-a-backseat/articleshow/95536971.cms">were affected by inflation</a>. “Revenue growth was driven by price hikes, with volumes remaining subdued across categories. The volume contraction was more pronounced in rural areas. Companies expect rural demand to recover in the second half of FY23, on the back of government interventions, a good monsoon and higher crop realisations,” says BNP Paribas. Ad spends and price cuts Going forward, BNP shares the optimism of the companies that the second half of the current financial year will bode well for revenues and margins too as commodity prices are moderating. “While we expect margin improvement in FY24, our earnings estimates are below consensus as we anticipate INR depreciation, an increase in advertisement spends and selective price cuts to drive volumes that are under pressure,” said the research firm. Lower ad spends in addition to a cut in corporate tax rates have been aiding the sector’s earnings growth for the last five fiscal years in spite of muted growth in revenues and gross profits. But now ad spends might resume to bring back consumers who have been downtrading to cheaper unbranded products for the last six months, leaving little scope for a strong margin recovery. Lower estimates, pricier stocks BNP Paribas raised its sales estimates for most companies during the earnings season but lowered the aggregate EBITDA margin for the sector by 30 bps to 20.9-22.1% for FY23 and FY24 – thereby reducing EBITDA as well as earning per share by 1-2% for both the years. “While the outlook for FY24 is positive, driven by moderation in raw material costs and signs of a <keyword id="9592296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rural-recovery" source="Orion">rural recovery</keyword>, we think consensus earnings estimates for FY24/25 are too optimistic. With no triggers for a sharp multiple de-rating, we believe some stocks can see time correction over the next year. Our preferred sector picks remain ITC, Britannia, Emami and Jubilant Foodworks,” said the report. Most FMCG stocks have been on a bull run in the last five months, and that has made them expensive relative to the tough conditions that await for its volume growth. “Since June 2022, the valuation multiples of Indian FMCG companies have expanded as concerns about unabated inflation eased. Rural recovery to be affected by muted Kharif season Many economists and rating agencies are also questioning the pace of economic growth of the country – marred by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/no-end-to-downgrades-in-gdp-estimates-as-economists-remain-divided-on-severity-of-slowdown/articleshow/95847763.cms">constant downgrades</a>. A major driver for rural recovery is a good Kharif crop, which, however, has been affected by erratic monsoons this year. “Untimely heavy rainfall in the states across North-west and Central India between end-September 2022 and mid-October 2022 is likely to have added to the moisture levels of the standing crop, which poses some downside risks to the kharif output relative to the first Advance Estimates,” said an ICRA report. <ul><li>Price cuts taken in mass segments will erase pricing-led growth seen in FMCG companies.</li><li>Few analysts are confident that price cuts will add to volume growth in Q2.</li><li>Without a meaningful rural recovery, volume growth will remain slow. </li></ul>It might be a slow second quarter for FMCG companies with hazy volume recovery and tapering raw material effects. The rise of new and local players have been eating into the business of top FMCG players. And, they chose to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/soap-opera-fmcg-players-kick-off-price-war-to-bring-back-whats-lost/articleshow/103657469.cms">take price cuts in mass categories </a> during the quarter. Analysts are divided on how much price cuts will add to volume growth. A report by Centrum said that price cuts pushing are primary volumes but off-take lags. The demand for packaged foods is rising but hair oils, toothpaste categories saw falling volumes. “Selling prices have been rationalised given the drop in commodity costs but there has not been a commensurate increase in volumes yet,” said J M Financial. The pricing-led growth in FMCG companies is now a thing of the past. Without significant volume recovery, revenues are ecpected to remain subdued this quarter. “We expect low single digit volume growth and low-to-mid single-digit value growth for most FMCG companies, with the tapering of pricing growth due to price cuts and/or anniversarization of price hikes. The underlying rural demand remains subdued. Uptick, if any, would be optical off a low base,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts believe that without a meaningful recovery in rural demand which is yet to pick up, volume recovery will remain slow. Even tapering inflation during the quarter has not improved the rural consumer sentiment due to unseasonal rains. Moreso, the festive consumption of discretionary items also comes with a lag this year due to the ‘Adhik Mas’ effect. Raw material benefits slip On the other hand, the margin growth seen last quarter due to lower raw materials will also taper off. The raw material index has moved up by 8-9% over the last three months. Between July and September, crude oil prices rallied by 20%, and commodities will not be as benign as they were in Q1. On a year-on-year basis however their costs will be lower, adding to margins due a favourable basis. “A favourable base would still drive strong year on year gross profit margin expansion and earnings for September quarter, but some of the margin gains would be in the base soon especially given the recent uptick in raw material prices,” said J M Financial. The stress of rising competition will also eat into margins in more ways than price cuts. Players will continue to ‘normalise’ brand-building investments that were run down during the hyper-inflationary phase in FY23. “Most companies have indicated that a large part of gross margin savings will be invested behind brands. Hence, operating margin expansion will be lower compared to gross margin expansion,” said Sharekhan. Investors will watch out for management commentary on how volume uptick in the second half of the year.
