Its warehouses, fulfilment centres and delivery hubs that are spread across the country ensure a seamless operation for its business. At its biggest fulfilment centre in India, located 50 kilometres from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/flipkarts-asias-largest-fulfilment-centre-to-process-a-million-shipments-a-day-during-bbd/articleshow/93851477.cms">Kolkata at Haringhata</a>, the facility uses new technologies such as automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic packaging arms, cross belt sorters, a nine-kilometre-long network conveyor belt and automated guided vehicles. Nearly 70% of these automation technologies deployed at Haringhata were built in India and it reduces Flipkart’s turnaround time by 35-50% in shipment movement. “With the help of route optimisations and dynamic planning, Flipkart ensures reliable deliveries to customers while optimising for cost and resources in all eventualities, including supply-chain disruptions,” Hemant Badri, senior vice president and head of supply chain, Flipkart Group told Business Insider India. Using robots to speed up delivery Before your order reaches your doorstep, it goes through several stages at Flipkart’s fulfilment centres. If you order a teddy bear from Flipkart – from unloading a package from various sellers into the centre to sending it to you – it goes through a long supply chain. In-bound: Products from various sellers are unloaded into the fulfilment centre and they go through a quality check by employees. Sorting and retrieval: Products are sorted by an intelligent conveyor belt, shelved as per their categories, and retrieved when an order is placed. For example, your teddy bear could be shelved in a soft toy section, retrieved when you place an order. Packaging: The teddy will then be packed into a box as per its size. It is not just humans that choose the right size, robotic packaging makers produce boxes too and drop the packages containing the product into a white courier bag. The robot is managed by an engineer. Shipments: The teddy then sits on a 9-km-long cross-belt sorter, which assigns shipments as per different pin codes. Out-bound: Here, your teddy will go through one last quality check and shipped as per your pincode. After the package reaches a delivery hub, a machine called Allocation Engine takes over. Explaining the machine’s role, Badri said, “[It] distributes goods among the many delivery models that offer the fastest time allocated to the location of the consumer.” With an increasing demand for quick deliveries, Flipkart relies on Automated Beat Planner, which predicts the average reaching time. It also predicts any roadblocks that might cause delays. “It forecasts the attempt time, padded with data-backed buffers and round-offs, to account for on-field deviation in plan execution and prediction of inaccuracies in quick deliveries using technologies like Automated Beat Planner (to suggest the delivery agent's route) and FLIP (to gauge customer's address accuracy),” shared Badri. In India, Flipkart has over 80 facility centres – 18 of which are large facilities that store appliances and 21 fulfilment centres are for groceries. Three new big boxes, or fulfilment centres, will be launched in the next three years. Using solar energy to power robots Flipkart’s newly added machines, which have increased efficiency, also require a huge amount of electricity to function. Walmart-backed Flipkart has installed solar panels which can power heavy machinery. “We are running at least eight hours on solar and 25-30% of power consumption savings we have done so far,” said Prabhakr Kolla, VP, F&amp;I at ekart, Flipkart. The facility has a three-megawatt solar power plant and the platform aims to touch 40 megawatts all across facilities in a few years. The process of commissioning a 2.75 megawatt rooftop solar power plant at Haringhata has also begun. As more and more companies across the spectrum sack employees amid the global meltdown, at least 853 tech companies worldwide have laid off about 137,492 employees to date, and the tally is only going north amid recession fears. According to data from layoffs.fyi, a crowdsourced database of tech layoffs, 1,388 tech companies have fired a total of 233,483 employees since the onset of Covid-19, but 2022 has been the worst for the tech sector. As of mid-November, more than 73,000 workers in the US tech sector have been laid off in mass-level job cuts led by companies like <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword>, Twitter, Salesforce, Netflix, Cisco, Roku, and others. Robinhood, Glossier, and Better are just a few of the tech companies that have notably trimmed their headcount in 2022, according to Crunchbase. Big Tech companies like Amazon and PC and printer major HP Inc have joined the global layoff season and were set to lay off more than 10,000 and up to 6,000 employees in days to come, respectively. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has warned employees that there will be more layoffs at the company in early 2023 "as leaders continue to make adjustments". The massive job cuts have hit several divisions, especially the Alexa virtual assistant business reportedly set to lose $10 billion this year as the voice assistant never managed to create an ongoing revenue stream. Alphabet, <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword>'s parent company, is reportedly gearing up to lay off about 10,000 "poor performing" employees, or 6 per cent of its workforce. According to a report in The Information, Google plans to ease out 10,000 employees through a new ranking and performance improvement plan. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/flipkart-cofounder-sachin-bansals-latest-venture-navi-files-draft-papers-for-3350-crore-ipo/articleshow/90172988.cms">draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) of Navi Technologies</a>, Bansal’s latest entrepreneurial venture, revealed that there are currently thirteen lawsuits and litigations filed by or against the 40-year-old. While some of these matters are related to Bansal’s personal life, others are all around his stint at Flipkart. The agency asked both the founders why they shouldn't face a $1.35 billion penalty over alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) between 2009 and 2015. The notice was also sent to investors Accel, Tiger Global, Accel nominee director Subrata Mitra, and Tiger Global nominee director Lee Fixel, who had invested in Flipkart before it was acquired by Walmart in 2018. In response, Sachin Bansal filed a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/flipkarts-sachin-bansal-moves-madras-high-court-challenging-ed-notice/articleshow/85903371.cms">writ petition before Madras High Court </a>in August to challenge the show cause notice. The matter is currently pending before court. However, ED has not taken any steps in the matter so far. “...If any adverse order is passed against the Promoter [in this matter], such outcome may have an adverse impact on the reputation of our Company and may also affect the business prospects of our Company [Navi],” the DRHP noted. There are six matters where petitions have been filed against Flipkart between 2015 to 2021, where Bansal has been made a party “due to his past associations with Flipkart”, the DRHP read. “Our Promoter has not received any notice or summons nor has any access currently to any information pertaining to these matters,” it further added. Flipkart has also filed a case in Madhya Pradesh High Court against an individual. Bansal is mentioned as a petitioner. All these matters are currently pending in court. US retail giant Walmart had acquired Flipkart for a whopping $16 billion, in exchange for 77% stake in the ecommerce giant, in May 2018. Sachin Bansal had exited the company soon after the acquisition, whereas Binny Bansal still holds around 2.4% in the company. Four years later, Sachin Bansal is still battling eight lawsuits from his Flipkart days

Post the completion of the separation, PhonePe is now a fully India-domiciled company. To recall, PhonePe moved its registered office from Singapore to India in October. “Setting up these businesses as separate entities will also provide value and create new opportunities for investors to participate in the Indian tech ecosystem – helping unlock and maximize enterprise value for shareholders of the two companies,” the companies said. The separation comes at a time when PhonePe is in talks to raise funds at a valuation of close to $13 billion, according to a <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-08/walmart-s-payments-startup-phonepe-seeks-to-raise-1-billion">Bloomberg report</a>. If it succeeds, it would become the most-valued fintech startup in India. The company had raised $700 million in 2020, led by Walmart and existing investors, including Tiger Global, at a valuation of $5.5 billion. While media reports earlier suggested that PhonePe was planning an IPO, the company’s founder and CEO Sameer Nigam in June 2022 dismissed the reports, saying, “PhonePe is not planning an IPO right now. We are focusing on building our business, and will go public once our core businesses turn profitable and our new initiatives have achieved a good product-market fit and scale,” according to a PTI report. As part of the separation of the two companies, the existing shareholders of Flipkart Singapore and PhonePe Singapore, led by Walmart, have taken up equity directly in PhonePe India. Walmart will continue to be the largest shareholder of PhonePe and Flipkart, according to the statement. “We are looking forward to the next phase of our growth as we invest in new businesses – like insurance, wealth management and lending, while also enabling the next wave of growth for UPI payments in India. This will help propel our vision to provide billions of Indians with financial inclusion,” said Nigam in the statement. Flipkart and PhonePe complete separation six years after acquisition

Flipkart is also thinking of ways they can offer software-as-a-service (SaaS), she noted, as the e-commerce giant explores new avenues of revenue. “In fact, one of the markets that we are using them [Flipkart] for is Chile. They're building out our ad tech platform for Chile, which is a really interesting development for them,” she said. Flipkart has ‘lived up to expectations so far’, says Walmart CEO, confirms IPO plans

Yet, there is a lot more evolution that’s to take place in this segment going ahead, say experts. In 2023, apart from continuing with the growth story in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, online shopping will also go deeper – which still has a lot of juice left. “Growth is expected to be led by new online shoppers - primarily from Tier 2/3 cities - and continued online migration of key categories including fashion and grocery. In fashion, 'social' commerce and direct- to-consumer brands are gaining share,” according to a Bernstein study. The mix has increased over the past 5-7 years – when e-commerce was largely concentrated in metro/Tier1 cities – to today, when Tier 2+ customers account for over 50% of the online shopper base, reveals Bernstein. The mix might continue to change with a bias towards non-metro shoppers. Along with robust sales from companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/flipkart-group-leads-e-commerce-festive-sales-meesho-is-second-largest-contributor-in-order-volume-redseer/articleshow/94701015.cms">Meesho</a> that are focussed on shoppers beyond the metros, the overall festive sales this year also had a large share of such shoppers. According to the E-Commerce Festive Season ‘22 report by Redseer, over 64% shoppers came from Tier II cities of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/one-in-every-five-online-orders-had-a-kurti-or-saree-in-their-cart-redseer/articleshow/95598263.cms">India</a>. “The pandemic changed the way Indians shop, with Shopify research showing more than half (53%) of consumers from non-metros now preferring online shopping, and 80% of Indian consumers preferring to shop from their smartphone. So has e-commerce platform Meesho. “Video content, voice search and localisation will take precedence in 2023 and beyond. Localisation through the use of vernacular and visual content will be the key to win over customers in Bharat,” Meesho told Business Insider India. Quick e-commerce and D2C business to fly In urban areas especially consumers have become a tad more demanding, especially when it comes to the delivery of essentials. “Within grocery, we're already seeing a shift from slow e-Com to 'quick'/ instant delivery,” said the Bernstein study. That means quick commerce players like Blinkit, Zomato, <keyword id="9731725" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="swiggy-instamart" source="Orion">Swiggy Instamart</keyword> and Dunzo are expected to see growth in the coming year. The trend of ordering groceries online has survived the pandemic-time need for essentials while stuck inside. In fact, the lightning-fast speed of the service has caught the fancy of users who now call the non-quick versions as slow e-Com. “The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted purchase decisions, and most users started moving to e-Commerce and quick commerce for their purchases. “Out of stock” - Those three little words have the power to kill e-commerce. In fact, 52% of online shoppers will abandon all items in their carts upon learning that just one item they are attempting to purchase is not in stock,” said Ajoy <keyword id="6356986" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="thomas" source="Orion">Thomas</keyword>, vice president, TeamLease Services. Thomas expects India's quick commerce sector to grow 10-15 times in the next five years to become a $5 billion market by 2025, quoting industry reports. Going into 2023, more consumers will look for D2C brands online as e-commerce players distinguish themselves from offline stores by offering products that can only be found online. Imagining to experiencing via technology At a median age of 28, Indians are among the youngest and also the most tech savvy. Celebrity fashion designer Manish Malhotra launched his virtual store last year, with a virtual walkthrough of a Delhi store. “Interactive content will be essential in ensuring that millions of new customers move from imagining to experiencing what a product might be like in real life before making a purchasing decision. While the first 100 million customers came from metros, the vision for 2023 is to further double down on getting the next 500 million customers online,” a <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword> spokesperson told Business Insider India. The e-commerce giant launched an augmented reality-powered Flipkart Camera, an AI-driven regional language interface and a virtual shopping platform called Flipverse. Its rival Amazon also started Amazon Live where shoppers can directly interact with experts who can showcase products, unveil top deals and answer customer queries in real time. Amazon engaged over 150 influencers to generate 600 live streams to help customers make an informed purchase decision. “India has the world's largest base of GenZ population. Their choices will redefine the future of the fashion retail industry in India, giving brands a great opportunity to create offerings to woo this customer base. Quick, personal, live and immersive – this is how e-commerce will be in 2023

<ul><li>Tech brands have fared badly in 2023 due to global headwinds, recession threats and more.</li><li>Banking and financial services companies including fintechs saw their value swell during the year.</li><li>PhonePe and Cred were the new entrants into Kantar’s list of Top 75 Indian brands.</li><li>Auto companies made a comeback from Covid-lows with TVS and Mahindra being among the fastest risers. </li></ul>It is not just the share prices of technology services companies that are falling, even their brand value has taken a beating. India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. FMCG as a sector has seen its brand value remain stable during the year.

The acquisition, said Flipkart, will augment its existing refurbishment business in the smartphone category. "Through the acquisition of Yaantra, we are enhancing our capabilities in a domain that is critical for the growth of the digital economy in India, as well as developing a comprehensive service ecosystem to support its expansion," said Ravi Iyer, Senior Vice President and Head, Corporate Development, Flipkart. Founded in 2013 by Jayant Jha, Ankit Saraf and Anmol Gupta, Yaantra repairs and sells refurbished consumer tech products such as smartphones and laptops. The recommerce market in India is growing at a rapid pace. However, the Indian smartphone refurbishment market is largely unorganised and fragmented, which has posed trust and convenience issues for end consumers. With the acquisition of Yaantra, Flipkart said it will enable greater access to affordable refurbished smartphones, offering value and convenience for the end consumers. The Yaantra team will help Flipkart build capabilities in this domain and accelerate its recommerce scale-up plans. The business will report to Prakash Sikaria, Senior Vice President and Head of Flipkart's Growth Charter.
