Flipkart's Shopsy launches e-grocery in 700 cities

Ikea has spent five years in India, and its flagship store in Hyderabad is turning a year old. Now, it’s time for its debut in the country’s financial capital, Mumbai, according to Peter Betzel, the Swedish furniture retailer’s Managing Director in India. An announcement is expected within the next few days, according to another source. “While the Navi Mumbai store is getting ready, our focus now is to launch e-commerce in Mumbai very shortly, to be able to meet the many Mumbaikars sooner,” Betzel told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. This is the first time the global retailer is entering a market without a physical store. That would pit the company directly in competition with the likes of Amazon, <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, and <keyword id="6368309" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-ladder">Urban Ladder</keyword>, who have spent years and billions in building a customer base in India. But Betzel is more sanguine than many others would be. “With more players, the whole category will grow even more. There is place for everyone,” he said. The furniture market in India is expected to be worth $17 billion in the next three years but the big shops, malls and snazzy online retailers with discounts and offers sell <a href="https://redseer.com/reports/disruption-in-indian-furniture-retailing/">less than two in every ten pieces of furniture</a> bought in India.  Touch points Going online first is not the only thing different about Ikea’s entry into Mumbai. The iconic stores of gargantuan size, roughly half a million square feet each, will be absent at least to start with. “The smaller stores can be 50,000 sq. ft - 150,000 sq. ft., large depending on what locations we are able to find,” he said. While Betzel didn’t elaborate on the rationale, the smaller stores may make sense in a crowded place like Mumbai where real estate is available at an exorbitant premium and travel can be cumbersome even for interested customers. Even in New York, Ikea has a ‘planning studio’ in the upscale Manhattan area and not the standard blue-box store. It seems to have a similar plan for Mumbai too. “In addition to ecommerce and the Navi store, IKEA will also open smaller city center stores. This will make us more accessible and bring us closer to where customers are,” Betzel said. Ikea calls these smaller stores ‘touch points’ for the customer to get an experience before making the purchase. “Currently the decision is to open two city center stores in different parts of Mumbai. There could be more online and offline touchpoints in the future based on the learnings from the market,” Ikea’s top boss in India explained. Amazon’s Great Indian Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale are set for a clash once again

While delivery of non-essential items was expected to resume after April 20, the government has issued a new notification that prohibits the sale of non-essential items on <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and other e-commerce platforms till the lockdown is lifted. It is a one-sided and unjust decision and against the larger interest of the traders and will create an imbalance in the country.” “Today, we have written a letter to PM Modi, asking him to intervene in the matter and reconsider the decision," CAIT’s secretary-general Praveen Khandelwal said. Indian e-commerce players Paytm Mall and Snapdeal welcome the move, saying they were already in talks with brands and their e-commerce partners. This mutation is spreading widely in China and other countries. In fact, the variant has been around and was already dominant in October in many European countries and USA. The variant has reached India as well. This week, four cases were reported – three from Gujarat and one from Odisha. However, the patients have all recovered now. Even though India is currently only reporting less than 200 new cases daily, the new variant is getting the government and the healthcare system worried. On December 22, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> chaired a high-level meeting to review the Covid-19 situation in India and urged everyone to wear masks in crowded public places. The new variant has a 4.4-fold higher neutralisation resistance than the original D614G variant — meaning that in a lab setting, antibodies from a vaccinated or infected individual were less likely to destroy BF.7 than the original Wuhan virus that spread worldwide in 2020, according to a study published in the Cell Host and Microbe journal. But the good news is that this variant is not as severe as the Delta variant, which was dominant in the second wave last year, according to Dr Laxman Jessani, consultant, infectious disease, Apollo Hospitals, <keyword id="57321" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="navi-mumbai" source="Orion">Navi Mumbai</keyword>. <keyword id="15865063" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dr-jessani" source="Orion">Dr Jessani</keyword> told Business Insider India, “ It is not as severe as delta as per data available so far.” But BF.7 is not the most resilient sub-variant according to the study – there was an over 10-fold higher neutralisation resistance in another Omicron sub-variant called BQ.1. A higher neutralisation resistance means there is a higher likelihood of the variant spreading in a population and replacing other variants. People who are not vaccinated or have weaker immunity such as elderly citizens, children, pregnant females or people with multiple comorbidities are at a high risk of catching this infection. Also, the R0 value of this mutant as per studies is approximately 10-18.6 which means that any infected individual can infect 10-18.6 people around. The R0 value is a measure of the transmission rate of an infection and indicates how contagious a disease is. Whereas, the R0 value of the original strain, that emerged in 2019-20, was 3.0-3.3. The BA.5 strain of Omicron also had the same R0 value of 18.6. “There is a quicker infection rate of this virus, in hours, which makes it difficult to be detected in the RT-PCR test,” Dr Sandeep Ghanta, consultant, internal medicine, Citizens Specialty Hospital, <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword>, told Business Insider India. Are vaccines effective against this variant? As BF.7 variant is more transmissible than other variants, vaccines may be less effective against this strain, according to Dr Jessani. However, doctors are still advising people to get their booster shots as it can help in strengthening the immune system. Dr Ghanta, however, suggests that a fourth vaccine shot may be helpful in preventing or triggering a new wave. “It is probable that if people get three to four shots of the vaccine, they may get protected. It is therefore very important for everyone to be more vigilant and responsive to taking <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> vaccines,” he said. According to Dr Anurag Agarwal, former head of India’s Covid-19 genome sequencing consortium INSACOG, the vaccines protected people until the Omicron variant that emerged last year in December. “Until Omicron, vaccines could control the spread of the infection. The distribution system is already operational in Bengaluru, and the companies plan to expand these facilities in Mumbai and Delhi in the coming week and tier II towns soon. "With the support of the government and local authorities, we are able to innovate unique distribution and supply chain models that enable us to serve communities in India," said Kalyan Krishnamurthy, CEO, Flipkart Group. The Tata Consumer Company distributors who are now listed online with Flipkart Marketplace, have undergone the Flipkart training for packaging and order fulfilment and will process orders as per the standard operating procedures set by Flipkart. Flipkart's marketplace supply chain will fulfill the orders by picking up these essentials combinations from Tata Consumer Company distributors and delivering them to customers using its extensive network of delivery executives. "This partnership with Flipkart provides an innovative way to set up a strong alternate distribution channel through our wide network," added Sunil D'Souza, MD and CEO, Tata Consumer Products.

JioMart is making modern and online retail experience accessible to many more Indians and towns for their daily essentials. All this is resulting in a launch pad for kiranas post-Covid-19, sources said. The platform offers enhanced reach in newer towns and cities with many more essentials, faster delivery and better pricing. With JioMart, some small/semi-urban towns are experiencing an exclusive "essential dedicated e-commerce" service for the first time. There are several towns now where JioMart is the only essentials delivery platform. These include Udupi and Gokak in Karnataka, Kapurthala in <keyword id="6354953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword>, Guna and Sagar in <keyword id="6355554" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Nokha and Bhiwadi in Rajasthan, Junagarh and Himatnagar in Gujarat, Palwal in Haryana among others. It has the least delivery time with delivery ahead of schedule for several orders. JioMart promised delivery within two days and most orders delivered in less than scheduled time. No slots are available on BigBasket and delivery time is 5-7 days on an average for most essentials on Amazon &amp; Flipkart. In terms of choice of essentials, most platforms are offering a select range of packaged products and have limited or no fruits and vegetables (F&amp;V) options. There are no F&amp;V options on Flipkart. Amazon Pantry has limited F&amp;V options in big towns and minimal choice (onions &amp; potatoes) in the small towns. Often essentials are priced very high by third party sellers, listed on marketplace, for delivery in small towns. Availability of listed products is much higher than on other platforms. In terms of the overall reach, JioMart offers delivery in nearly 200 locations across the country. On the other hand, Amazon Pantry is live in several cities and towns but current availability is limited to around 100 cities currently. In some cities, third party sellers on Amazon may be offering select essentials/grocery. Bigbasket is available in nearly 30 cities. Flipkart is offering its <keyword id="7088894" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-supermart">Flipkart Supermart</keyword> service in 26 select cities through a tie up with Vishal Mega Mart stores. Jiomart is offering better pricing and offers a minimum 5 per cent less than MRP on packaged products. There is a highly competitive pricing on JioMart and the most commonly ordered essentials are priced higher on other platforms as compared to JioMart, especially in small towns. This can be seen through Monday evening's pricing for Mumbai where Red Label tea 1 kg packet is priced at Rs 423 in DMart, Rs 450 in Bigbasket, Rs 410 in Amazon and Rs 408 in Jiomart. Similary, Saffola Gold 1 litre is priced at Rs 135 in DMart, Rs 149 in Bigbasket, Rs 137 in Amazon and Rs 132 in Jiomart. Parle G 800 gm is available for Rs 65 on DMart, Rs 70 on Bigbasket, Rs 68 on Amazon and Rs 63 on Jiomart. Potato is available at Rs 36 from DMart, Rs 39 from Bigbasket, Rs 39 from Amazon and Rs 32 from Jiomart. The retailer sees little scope in adding physical stores in the country. It may put more weight behind Flipkart — which it bought for ₹1.13 lakh crore in 2018. This is as rival Reliance JioMart’s made its debut in the ecommerce space. “It’s happening because focus is shifting to e-commerce rather than physical (stores),” said the company. The American multinational reportedly laid off executives including vice presidents across verticals — agri business, FMCG and real estate — at its Gurgaon headquarters. More exits are expected in three months time. However, the company has denied the anticipations regarding more layoffs. "A report appearing in the section of the Press speculating second round of layoffs in April is baseless and incorrect.," it said. It also plans to shut a fulfillment centre in Mumbai as the company’s wholesale business is suffering losses. Yet another online-physical combine - Amazon and Future Retail too are bunching their strategies together as they prepare for an onslaught from India’s richest man - Mukesh Ambani and his ostentatious plans to merge his digital capabilities with Jio to his retail venture, JioMart. "Our members are increasingly becoming omni-channel shoppers. We are thus investing heavily in technology and have a healthy pipeline of Best Price stores. This will provide our members a true omni-channel and convenient shopping experience in the future.," Walmart said. Walmart entered wholesale business in India in 2007 with the Bharti Group. It currently runs 28 'Best Price' Modern Wholesale Stores — selling to small shopkeepers — across the country. Ports-to-energy conglomerate <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword> has incorporated a new subsidiary to set up a data centre in Mumbai, one of the half a dozen cities that the billionaire <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword>'s group has identified to set up data centres initially. <keyword id="13115379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AdaniConnex-Pvt-Ltd" source="Orion">AdaniConnex Pvt Ltd</keyword>, a 50:50 joint venture of <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> Enterprises and <keyword id="8796732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EdgeConneX" source="Orion">EdgeConnex</keyword> Europe BV, on February 4 incorporated a wholly-owned subsidiary Mumbai Data Centre Ltd, the Adani group firm said in a stock exchange filing. The new unit will "undertake business to develop, operate, maintain, deal with data centres, information technology (IT)/ information technology-enabled services (ITES)/ cloud, providing services related thereto and to undertake activities associated with its infrastructure development including land acquisition and development for the said purpose," it said. MDCL will commence its business operations in due course, it added. In February 2021, Adani Enterprises Ltd had partnered EdgeConneX, a leading data centre operator, to develop one gigawatt (GW) of data centre capacity over the next decade. The equal joint venture (JV), named AdaniConneX, will focus on building a network of hyperscale data centres in India, starting with Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. A data centre provides the necessary secured architecture wherein computing and networking equipment is concentrated for collecting, storing, processing, distributing or allowing access to large amounts of data. Gautam Adani had in November 2021 stated that he wants his conglomerate to be a world leader in green data storage, with sites run entirely on clean power, in sync with India's goal of turning carbon net-zero by 2070. The diversification comes against the backdrop of India's digital economy expected to touch USD 1 trillion by 2025. Also, the Reserve Bank of India's norm mandates data localisation, necessitating the need for setting up large data centres to store and protect information. Data localisation refers to storing data on any device physically present within the borders of a country where the data is generated. Adani and other large corporates from Reliance Jio to Bharti Airtel are also seeking to tap this opportunity. Adani group last year got land in Noida for the data centre from the Uttar Pradesh government. Flipkart has partnered with Adani Group to set up its third data centre in Chennai. Last week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget for 2022-23 proposed to classify data centres and energy storage as infrastructure assets allowing firms to access cheap and long-term credit. "As India's internet economy continues to be on a surge, as there is an increasing need to build a requisite data centre to ensure seamless uninterrupted data consumption and storage. "The growing smartphone subscribers with rising monthly mobile data traffic, coupled with rising broadband penetration and increasing digital transactions per year, will create an enormous need to collect, store, process and distribute data," Adani Group said on its website. It said Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) is the only company with inherent capabilities to build Data centres across the country. The firm has "complete ownership of large land parcels across the country, project management capabilities and resources availability, end-to-end power value chain (generation, transmission and distribution), fibre connectivity and strong network connectivity".
