Leveraging the Flipkart Group's supply chain infrastructure and tech capabilities, Grocery on Shopsy will cater to consumers across 700 cities, spanning over 5,800 pincodes. "Grocery is a key consumer need and we are committed to making e-grocery affordable for consumers and sellers alike. We have been working on reducing the cost of delivering groceries over the last few months. We are happy to announce that we have achieved best in class cost structure which makes us confident of scaling grocery on Shopsy," Prakash Sikaria, Senior Vice President - Growth, Flipkart said in a statement. Grocery on Shopsy will host over 6,000 products across 230 categories - ranging from staples, FMCG, and other dry groceries; matching the selection and range available on <keyword id="7658655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-grocery" source="Orion">Flipkart Grocery</keyword>. With groceries on Shopsy, users can now shop for value groceries by adding and checking out products in their cart or by combining orders for multiple individuals in their network. Users can avail of a flat 5 per cent commission margin that will directly be credited to the linked bank account as well as enjoy up to 50 per cent savings, the company claims. Flipkart's Grocery fulfilment centres including centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna and Pune that will be leveraged by Shopsy, have fully digitised processes and product quality checks. These centres have implemented effective quality management systems to ensure the products are traceable from raw materials until they reach the consumer, without losing their freshness. Launched by Flipkart in July 2021 with the aim to make digital commerce accessible across India through a zero-commission marketplace. Shopsy has over 2.5 lakh sellers on the platform who provide 150 million products across 250+ categories and is on track to enable over 25 million online entrepreneurs by 2023. Flipkart's Shopsy launches e-grocery in 700 cities

Flipkart on Tuesday said it has expanded its grocery services to more than 50 cities via <keyword id="125920" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="marketplace">Marketplace</keyword>, and aims to reach over 70 cities in the next six months. Grocery continues to be one of the fastest-growing categories, with the increase in demand for quality food and household supplies from users. Flipkart ups its game in e-grocery by expanding to 50 cities as competition rises from JioMart, Amazon and others

Nearly a decade after entering India and failing to make any waves due to resistance from the government, <keyword id="80487" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> is making a renewed push in the country by focussing on it’s fast growing e-commerce market. The world’s largest retailer is taking a 77% stake in <keyword id="6354742" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, an Indian e-commerce giant, by buying $14 billion of stock from it’s investors and pumping in $2 billion of fresh funds. With the deal inked, now the work begins for Walmart. In addition to boosting Flipkart’s logistics and supply chain network, it has a number of complementary plans for the Indian market. According to a <a href="https://news.walmart.com/2018/05/09/walmart-to-invest-in-flipkart-group-indias-innovative-ecommerce-company">press release on its website</a>, Walmart plans to create jobs, support small businesses and increase farmer incomes. Here’s how things should go from here. Direct and local procurement of <keyword id="389479" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="groceries">groceries</keyword> Flipkart can’t focus on clothes and electronics forever. And Walmart derives half its global sales from groceries. Like <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and the Alibaba-funded BigBasket, the US retailer has big plans in the online groceries space in India - a segment which is widely predicted to drive India’s e-commerce growth. Currently, farm-to-table supply chains in India suffer from wastage and a lack of investment. Walmart is expected to source fresh groceries directly from farmers and small businesses and minimise wastage by adding a cold storage component to its supply chains. This could also include investments in collection centres, and quality control facilities. In doing so, Walmart will help farmers cater to a wider customer base. It already runs a number of <a href="http://www.wal-martindia.in/2017/11/30/walmart-foundation-supports-market-readiness-for-farmers-in-india-with-a-grant-of-close-to-2-million">market readiness projects</a> in India centred on back-end infrastructure support, increasing access to credit for farmers and training on international food standards. Making ‘kirana’ stores go digital In its press release, Walmart said it would, “partner with kirana owners and members to help modernize their retail practices and adopt digital payment technologies”. Ekart, Flipkart’s supply chain arm, is already sourcing and distributing products through thousands of kiranas. Kiranas refer to small mom-and-pop neighbourhood retail shops. Walmart already has ties with kiranas through its Best Price wholesale business in India, wherein these vendors act as resellers. In addition to integrating more of these stores and small retailers into Flipkart’s supply chain network, Walmart will likely get them to start using Flipkart's PhonePe <keyword id="6358577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments">digital payments</keyword> network to accept and disburse payments offline. The payments app crossed <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/flipkart-owned-phonepe-clocks-42-4-million-upi-transfers/articleshow/64088569.cms">40 million transfers</a> on the Unified Payments Interface in April alone. But it won’t come cheap With its $16 billion investment, Walmart is spending a lot more money in India than Amazon, Flipkart’s nearest competitor in the Indian online shopping market. In 2016, Amazon said it would increase its planned investment in India <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/Amazon-to-increase-India-investment-to-5-billion/article14391866.ece">to $5 billion</a> in order to close the market gap with Flipkart. According to news reports earlier this week, it has pumped <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/toJD0xTVmz0Exkuu7wL6vJ/Amazon-pumps-Rs2600-crore-in-India-unit-amid-trade-war-with.html">an additional $386 million </a>(₹26 billion) into its Indian unit this year. The war over who can offer deeper discounts will affect both firms and further investments will likely be necessary. In all probability, Flipkart will continue to report losses in the near term, something that Walmart is probably okay with since it’s in it for the long haul. After the Walmart acquisition, here’s what’s in store from Flipkart

New Delhi, Apr () Walmart-owned Flipkart on Thursday announced a pilot with retail chain store Spencers to introduce hyperlocal deliveries of groceries and essentials in Hyderabad. Under the pilot, consumers will be able to order groceries and essentials starting this month from Spencers store on the Flipkart app, a statement said. The orders will be collected from a set of chosen sample stores across Hyderabad by Flipkart executives and delivered to the customer's doorstep in a timely and hygienic manner, it added. "This partnership will leverage synergies between the companies to help enable deliveries of essential products to consumers and thereby, promote social distancing in the backdrop of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country," the statement said. Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said the company is committed to ensuring fulfilling customers' needs amidst the lockdown to promote 'social distancing'. "...we are initiating various steps in this regard. We are pleased to launch this pilot with Spencers Retail to collaborate and meet the needs of consumers who are contributing to the fight against COVID-19 by staying at home. "We've built a robust tech-backed platform to offer consumers real-time insights of essentials available in their area and will ensure timely doorstep deliveries," he added. After the government imposed a 21-day lockdown on March 24, many people have turned to e-commerce platforms to place orders for essential goods, including food and grocery, to stay away from crowds and to practice social distancing. Many large retail outlets have also been forced to allow less number of people to be present inside store premises to ensure there is adequate distance between them. "In such times, building an ecosystem of partnerships will transition us to truly become an omni-channel business in serving consumers," Spencers Retail MD and CEO Devendra Chawla said. "In this tough environment, Spencers' partnership with Flipkart provides another platform to a larger set of consumers to seamlessly access our range of essentials who may want to use other reputed platforms/marketplaces apart from our own Spencers App to buy during the lockdown," he added. In a separate statement, Flipkart said it has introduced medically-certified hand sanitizers and surgical masks under its private brand -- Flipkart SmartBuy's Health+ range. Utilising its existing infrastructure, the company aims to provide access to these locally manufactured essentials in light of the increasing demand by consumers amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. "Flipkart SmartBuy Health+ hand sanitizer will be made available in line within the government pricing directive of Rs 250 for 500 ml. "These sanitizers adhere to FDA approved formulation with alcohol content as per the WHO recommendation," the statement said. Yesterday, <a href="https://factordaily.com/amazon-future-group/">news broke</a> that <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> was planning to buy a 10% stake in the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> arm of Future Group, an Indian conglomerate headed by Kishore Biyani. The move highlights Amazon India’s ambitions in the brick-and-mortar retail space, and follows its acquisition of a 5% stake in Shoppers Stop last September. Given that foreign companies are barred from directly investing in India’s multi-brand retail space, as <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> knows all too well, Amazon has to make its investment through an entity that is registered as a foreign portfolio investor. It is also limited to a 10% stake. The Whole Foods acquisition The move echoes Amazon’s retail strategy in the US, where it’s fending off Walmart’s entry into e-commerce by expanding into physical retail. In June 2017, Amazon agreed to buy Whole Foods Inc, a food supermarket chain with an entirely physical presence, for <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/16/business/dealbook/amazon-whole-foods.html">$13.4 billion</a>. While this was partly an attempt to take on the giant Walmart in the brick-and-mortar retail space, it also showed Amazon’s intent to become a bigger force in the food and grocery market. It realised that there was still a sizeable amount of customers who preferred buying their food in person. By combining its online and physical presence, Amazon wanted to provide customers in the US with a variety of channels to purchase groceries and other items - just like it plans to do in India. But the plan in the US wasn’t just limited to groceries. It wanted to start selling groceries offline, and then use that as a launchpad for selling everything that is non-perishable to customers. The battle comes to India It was clear with Amazon’s counter-offer for Flipkart that Amazon and Walmart are gearing for another faceoff in India. With a lot of cash at their disposal, both companies will exploit a number of retail channels in the race to sales and customer growth. Amazon has already got it’s online grocery business in India <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/amazon-food-retail-pune/">off the ground,</a> and now it will look to one-up Walmart and make inroads in the physical retail space. As has been said before, one thing is for certain. It is Indian consumers who stand to benefit most from this competition in the short term. Not only will all kinds of products be more accessible than ever before, they will be cheaper. However, the freedom of choice isn’t going to last forever. There will be more acquisitions, and Flipkart and Amazon India will get bigger and smaller players will be eaten up. One company will likely edge the other out. And then we’ll be totally dependent on the winner.

With a $120 price target, 41% above Walmart's current level, Cowen's Oliver Chen told Business Insider Walmart is "good to own ahead of the earnings print."He explained why Walmart is poised for growth in both the short- and long-term. <h2>Short-term growth</h2>After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-buys-whole-foods-changes?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest/?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest#however-the-moment-i-entered-the-store-it-was-clear-that-amazon-had-taken-over-2">Amazon bought Whole-Foods</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-market-influence-instances-of-panicked-investors-in-other-companies-2018-1?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest#june-2017-grocery-stocks-slide-after-amazon-announces-137-billion-acquisition-of-whole-foods-and-then-again-two-months-later-after-price-cuts-are-announced-3">US grocery stocks got rocked</a>, and the <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amazon-stock-price-amazon-has-created-a-tipping-point-in-online-groceries-2018-4-1022012798?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest">industry had to adapt to survive</a>. Big grocers are now building their online capabilities to compete with Amazon, and Chen says Walmart is strategically "setting themselves up to compete effectively against Amazon." Walmart's store location and pricing gives it an edge in online grocery sales, which now accounts for 56% of the retailer's revenue, Chen noted. "They can use locations as a competitive advantage with grocery pick-up, which is extremely well received," he said. In short, customers order groceries online and then pick them up at a Walmart in close proximity. The sheer volume of Walmart stores enables it to achieve this convenience. Walmart also has the ability to undercut the prices of other grocers. "They won't be undersold, so Walmart will be a low price leader," Chen said. And because Walmart has higher margins in other business segments, "that enables them to manage prices," Chen added, giving it greater ability than other grocers to compete with Amazon's low prices. Groceries aside, broader e-commerce sales haven't been too shabby for Walmart. Not only has <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/walmart-stock-price-beating-amazon-at-its-own-game-2018-5-1024469585">Walmart's e-commerce growth rate outpaced that of Amazon's</a> in the past year, but Chen thinks that will continue.Amazon e-commerce revenue grew 26% in the first-quarter this year according to UBS data, and Chen forecasts a 40% growth rate year-over-year for Walmart. Even being conservative, Chen says, "Ee don't have a view that they're supposed to grow lower than that." <h2>Long-term growth</h2>Earlier this month, <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/walmart-stock-price-flipkart-majority-stake-2018-5-1023879080?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest">Walmart bought 77% of Indian e-commerce leader Flipkart for $16 billion</a>. And while some investors are concerned that the not-yet-profitable <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/walmarts-stock-price-next-acquisition-could-be-bust-2018-4-1022444456?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest">Flipkart will be a drag on Walmart's earnings</a> going forward, Chen isn't concerned. "Investors need to be willing to accept short-term losses," he said, adding "this is important in being globally competitive with Amazon in the long-term." All told, Chen certainly advises buying Walmart. "I like it this week, because we think that online business can sequentially improve."
