Online sales expected to boom as more customers shop online post pandemic

A report from Bangalore-based Red Seer Strategy Consultants estimates online sales in the festive month starting 24 September to touch $11.8 billion, a 28% jump from the pre-pandemic levels of 2018. In fact, in the first week of the festive season itself, sales are projected to reach $5.9 billion. Founded in 2013 by Jayant Jha, Ankit Saraf and Anmol Gupta, Yaantra repairs and sells refurbished consumer tech products such as smartphones and laptops. The recommerce market in India is growing at a rapid pace. However, the Indian smartphone refurbishment market is largely unorganised and fragmented, which has posed trust and convenience issues for end consumers. With the acquisition of Yaantra, Flipkart said it will enable greater access to affordable refurbished smartphones, offering value and convenience for the end consumers. The Yaantra team will help Flipkart build capabilities in this domain and accelerate its recommerce scale-up plans. The business will report to Prakash Sikaria, Senior Vice President and Head of Flipkart's Growth Charter. With this, the e-commerce giant now delivers to 26,000 pincodes. This expansion is a part of Snapdeal’s strategy to serve India’s smaller towns – Bharat, where the next 200 million Internet users lie “The network expansion is a logical next step of our leadership in Bharat-focused e-commerce. This growth in our reach reflects the vast potential of value-focused e-commerce in our country and we plan to add more areas to our network in 2020,” said a Snapdeal spokesperson. During this year’s Diwali sales, Snapdeal saw a 50% growth over last year. As much as 90% of the orders came from non-metro cities. These include cities like Satara, Anand, Bharuch and Pali (West India), Malerkotla, Roorkee, Jhansi and Haridwar (North India), Hazaribagh, Raniganj and Paradip (East India), Tezpur, Itanagar and Majuli (North-East India) and Khammam, Hassan, Miryalaguda and Bhimavaram (South India). A similar trend was observed by Amazon and Flipkart too-- which saw a rising number of sales from smaller towns and cities.

Snapdeal is on an expansion spree, now delivers to 26,000 pincodes in India

To commemorate the occasion, Bezos, the chief executive officer of Amazon, <a href="https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/31/img18/Gateway/JeffLetter/Jeff_letter_5yr_PC_new_1x_900_v6._CB476362259_.jpg">posted a letter</a> to <keyword id="6359672" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Customers">customers</keyword> on Amazon’s India website in which he thanked them for making Amazon the “most visited shopping site in India for the last two years”. While domestic rival <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> can also stake a claim to the title of India’s most visited shopping site, Amazon’s growth in India has been impressive. It has 50 fulfillment centres in 13 states disbursing packages to customers every day. More importantly, according to Bezos, it now has customers from every serviceable pincode in the country, owing to outreach programs like Udaan. In fact, according to Amazon’s India chief Amit Agarwal, 85% of the platform’s customers in India are <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/amazon-india-ahead-of-flipkart-claims-agarwal/articleshow/64393758.cms">from small cities</a>. Under Project Udaan, which was launched in 2015, Amazon partners with kirana stores, mobile phone outlets and physical vendors to get customers in remote towns and cities. It trains these sellers to use its online shopping platform and they in turn, use this to help customers order products that they need - earning a commission. Amazon boasts a network of 300,000 sellers, including small businesses and local artisans. It has also invested in local video content like television series and started offering books on its Kindle store in several regional languages. Big money While a five-year anniversary is an apt time to laud one’s own achievements, this growth hasn’t come cheap. After committing $5 billion worth of capital to its Indian business, Bezos is reported to be mulling an additional infusion of $2 billion in order to take on rival Flipkart. Last month, Walmart decided to purchase a 77% stake in the Indian <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> giant, with the end goal of pushing Amazon out of the online retail space. Both companies will also compete intensely in India’s physical retail market. Amazon is reportedly mulling the acquisition of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-and-walmart-prepare-for-a-face-off-in-indias-physical-retail-and-online-grocery-markets-just-like-in-the-us/articleshow/64286470.cms">a 10% stake in in the retail arm of Future Group</a>, an Indian conglomerate, following its purchase of a 5% share in Shoppers Stop last year. Amazon’s heavy capital spending and focus on discounts has also hurt its bottom line results. Despite a 43% jump in revenue, Amazon Seller Services Ltd, which operates Amazon’s India portal, saw its net loss widen by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/amazon-seller-services-losses-rise-31/articleshow/64409497.cms">31% to ₹48.3 billion</a> in fiscal 2017. Looking ahead In the penultimate paragraph of his letter, Bezos declared that it was still Day 1 of the company’s operations in India. Amazon has ambitious growth plans for the country, which is shaping up to be its most important market outside the US. It is planning to acquire <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/as-walmart-flipkart-tie-amazon-targets-next-100-mn-customers-in-india-118053001277_1.html">100 million additional customers</a> in India by 2022. This will involve the construction of new warehouses and promotion of its Prime service as well as regional language options on its website, a push into pincodes that aren’t currently serviceable and the extension of credit to facilitate purchases.

Ex-Paytm employees join crypto-focused Transak as it doubles down on its India expansion plans

New Delhi, Nov 19 () Customer engagement and rewards platform EasyRewardz on Tuesday said it has raised an undisclosed sum in series B funding from Walmart-owned Flipkart.
 The fund infusion will help EasyRewardz to drive new product development and accelerate global expansion, a statement said.
 EasyRewardz has more than doubled its customers and revenues since its series A funding round in November 2017, which was led by Trans-Continental Venture Fund (TCVF), it added.
 Other investors in the company include Venture Catalysts along with angel investors like Jitendra Gupta, Amrish Rau, Satyen Kothari, Ashneer Grover, Subrat Pani and others.
 "We see CRM Software adoption fastest amongst SMBs (small and medium business) in retail as customer centricity continues to hold centre ground in retailing," EasyRewardz co-founder and CEO Soumya Chatterjee said.
 CRM Software has a market size of USD 48 billion, and is seeing a 16 per cent year-on-year increase globally, with Asia Pacific growing faster at over 20 per cent,
 "We have firmly established our position in India, and have a toe-hold in MENA. We will now accelerate our global expansion to meet the growing demand of Customer Experience Management platforms," EasyRewardz co-founder and sales director Tejas Kadakia said.
 Founded in 2011 by Soumya Chatterjee, Tejas Kadakia, Angad Singh and Sapan Kadakia, EasyRewardz is a customer engagement SaaS solution company, and operates in India, South East Asia and Middle East, among others. The company currently has an annualised revenue of Rs 25 crore.
 "Flipkart continues to make investments in the Indian ecosystem in order to deliver value to our customers. Our investment in EasyRewardz is part of our ongoing initiatives to give superior customer experience," Flipkart said in response to queries on the investment. SR RVK
