These deals will often give you a multicity route to your final destination through two connecting flights on separate airlines.</span></li><li><span>While you can save a lot of money on "hacker" multicity flights, airlines are not obligated to help you if you miss your connecting flight, meaning that you'll be left with the bill for a new flight. </span></li><li><span>If you insist on booking "hacker fares," know what you are buying and ensure there is a long layover to account for delays or customs checks.</span></li></ul><p>Everyone has their own strategy for scoring a cheap flight. Booking <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-time-to-book-your-plane-tickets-is-no-longer-on-a-tuesday-2018-5/?IR=T">flights on Sundays</a>, using Skyscanner's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skyscanner-lets-you-find-cheap-flights-around-the-world-2015-11">Everywhere feature</a>  or Kayak's Explore tool, only traveling during "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-shoulder-season-2017-8">shoulder season</a>" - the list goes on.</p><p>But one of the most ubiquitous tools for scoring cheap flights is using <span>a fare aggregator or metasearch site like Kayak, Skyscanner, Kiwi, Priceline, Hotwire, or Expedia. Those sites pull data from hundreds of different airlines and online travel agencies to show you different prices and options for flights.</span></p><p><span> If you've booked even a single flight in the last 20 years, it's likely you are familiar one or more of these sites. But there's a trick to a cheap flight that you need to watch out, lest you find yourself emptying your wallet for a few extra hundred bucks you didn't plan on. I found out the hard way, twice.</span></p><p><span>When searching for fares, most fare aggregator or metasearch sites will show you something called a "hacker fare" or a "secret deal" (each site has its own name for it). This deal may sound like a great deal at the time; it's often cheaper than the next option by $100 or more. If your initial flight gets delayed or you get stuck in customs, the airline will just put you on the next flight to your destination.</span></p><p><span>But, if you book a multi-city flight through most fare aggregator or metasearch sites, you get no such protection, even if you miss your second leg through no fault of your own. </span></p><p><span>For example, on a recent trip to Mexico, I was on a tight budget and booked a multi-city "hacker fare." My final destination was Oaxaca, a colorful artsy city in central Mexico. In order to get there, I had to fly New York to Mexico City and then Mexico City to Oaxaca. Because I had booked the trip as a multi-city through a fare aggregator, my two flights were individual one-way tickets from different airlines - AeroMexico and Interjet.</span></p><p><span> My flight to Mexico City got in on time, at 5:45 a.m., but by the time I got through customs to the Interjet check-in desk, it was already too late. And, because I had booked the two flights - according to the airlines - separately, they had no obligation to help me. While the airlines themselves will still have no obligation to help you if you go the "hacker" route, Kiwi offers its own guarantee that covers schedule changes, flight delays, and cancellations. I've never had to try it, so I don't know how good their customer service is, but they advertise that they will provide you with an alternate connecting flight or a full refund.</span></p><p><span>Kiwi's guarantee didn't make my last 'hacker" flight much less stressful. In May, I flew from Hong Kong to Bali by connecting through Singapore. When my flight from Hong Kong landed a few minutes late, it turned a tight two-hour layover even tighter. Thankfully, Changi Airport in Singapore<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-best-airport-number-1-singapores-changi-photos-tour-2018-6"> has the most efficient check-in and security process</a> I've ever experienced. I'm sure at any other airport, I would've missed the flight.</span></p><p>Now, I'm not saying don't ever book "hacker" fares, but just be aware of what you are buying. For some people, the added stress is worth the savings. For some people, it won't be. </p><p>For my part, I've decided to only book such multi-city flights if the layover is three hours or longer. Recently Indian Railways has introduced surge pricing model in AC III and AC II fares of Rajdhani and Shatabdi where fare will go up by 10% for every 10% seats sold, with a cap of 1.5 times the base fare. The airline will follow the AC II regular fare.<br />

Connecting flights out of Florida will cost a bit more, at $159.</p><p>In addition to the destinations it serves in Florida, the $99 fares are applicable for Charleston International and Savannah/Hilton Head International. The fare cap will also cover select destinations in Haiti, the Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Bahamas.</p><p>Subject to availability, the $99 fares will be on sale through September 13.</p><p>JetBlue's decision to cap prices comes amid increasing consumer anger as airfares surge ahead of Irma's arrival. <ul class="summary-list"><li>United, American, and Delta Air Lines are all doing away with change fees and select other optional fees.</li><li>United and American will also allow passengers to fly stand-by on earlier flights for free and offer other complimentary perks for elite status holders.</li><li>The US airline industry is still falling short of 1 million daily passengers with the summer only seeing a moderate increase in passengers compared to spring. </li></ul><p>Less than 24 hours after United <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines">Airlines</keyword> announced that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-airlines-ends-most-ticket-change-fees-not-basic-economy-2020-8">it's eliminating change fees</a> for passengers, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have followed suit. The country's two largest airlines each announced their latest attempts to win back pandemic-wary travelers within an hour of each other on Monday, marking the latest sign that the industry is struggling to return to normal following a <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/coronavirus/passenger-throughput">disastrous summer</a>.</p><p>These airlines and many others started charging passengers who changed their plans in the early 2000s, part of a wave of ancillary fees for things like checking bags and priority boarding. United and American, for example, are also allowing customers to change to earlier flights on a stand-by basis for free. </p><p>Here's a breakdown of the changes each of the big three is making to its policies.</p><h2>United Airlines</h2><div type="image" title="United Airlines 777" height="3066" width="4088" msid="77862017" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://hub.united.com/2020-08-30-united-airlines-permanently-eliminates-change-fees-2647406401.html">United became the first of the big three airlines to permanently get rid of change fees on Sunday</a>, dropping the $200 charge for domestic flight changes that includes travel to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Passengers with most fares can make unlimited changes to the ticket and only pay the fare difference each time. </p><p>Basic economy will remain restrictive with United still not allowing changes to those with the fare but the airline's current travel waiver includes free changes for all tickets, basic economy and international included, booked until the end of the year.</p><p>Members of United's MileagePlus frequent flyer program will also be able to cancel their award tickets and have their miles redeposited for free if they cancel at least 30 days from departure. Elite status holders will also be able get on an earlier flight to their destination, if there's a seat available. </p><h2>American Airlines</h2><div type="image" title="American Airlines Airbus A319" height="1665" width="2220" msid="77862021" hostid="261"></div><p>American is removing change fees for domestic and certain international flights on all fares except basic economy.. Travelers <keyword id="52392" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flying">flying</keyword> domestically or between the US and Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean will no longer be subject to the $200 fee for domestic flights and up to $750 fee for international, according to its <a href="https://www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/support/optional-service-fees.jsp#ticketing">fee schedule</a>. </p><p>The airline is also allowing customers the option to fly stand-by on earlier flights regardless of the fare or destination book, whether it be international or domestic, without paying a fee beginning on October 1. The charge for doing so was previously $75 for domestic flights, according to the airline's <a href="https://www.aa.com/i18n/plan-travel/extras/same-day-travel.jsp">website</a>, with exceptions for international destinations.</p><p>United is also making basic economy less egalitarian, giving elite status holders expanded benefits when booking the fare. The airline's top frequent flyers will receive complimentary same-day confirmed flight changes and upgrades to first class and premium seats in economy when available. </p><p>In 2021, however, basic economy fares won't earn miles that can be used for accruing elite status. </p><h2>Delta Air Lines</h2><div type="image" title="Delta Air Lines Airbus A321" height="2000" width="2666" msid="77862023" hostid="261"></div><p>Delta <a href="https://news.delta.com/building-its-demonstrated-commitment-flexibility-customers-delta-eliminates-change-fees">announced</a> on Monday the removal change fees for travelers in all classes except for basic economy on domestic flights including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Customers formerly had to pay $200 to make changes to domestic tickets, according to the <a href="https://www.delta.com/us/en/change-cancel/change-flight">airline</a>, including those to and from US territories in the Caribbean.</p><p>Basic economy or international fares will not be affected by the change, but Delta will allow free ticket changes for both under its existing waiver until the end of the year. The fare difference still applies when making a flight change and Delta has not said whether it will allow travelers to travel stand-by on earlier flights for free, as United and American are offering. </p>

Tickets must be purchased for travel between January 29 and March 13, and travel booked at least three weeks before departure.</p><p><span>Alaska Airlines <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-airlines-flash-sale-cheap-tickets-2018-12">ran a similar deal in December. </a></span></p><p>Alaska's Saver fare and other basic economy tickets are discount fare classes within an airline's economy cabin. As a result, the in-flight service and experience will be the same for the Saver fare as it will be for someone who purchased a pricier Main-fare ticket. This means passengers who go the Saver route will sit in the same seats and enjoy the same in-flight perks and amenities as everyone else in coach.</p><p>Saver-fare tickets are not changeable or cancelable, and they will not be eligible for upgrades. Those traveling on Saver-fare tickets will also board last. Frontier Airlines is selling flights for as low as $20

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11902009" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="southwest" source="Orion">Southwest</keyword> was granted a preliminary injunction, stopping <keyword id="12284195" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kiwi-com" source="Orion">Kiwi.com</keyword> from displaying its fares.</li><li>A judge said Kiwi.com caused "damage to [Southwest's] reputation and loss of goodwill."</li></ul><p>A federal judge granted Southwest <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">Airlines</keyword> a preliminary injunction against Kiwi.com, stopping the discount-ticket website from posting the airline's fares. </p><p>"Kiwi breached [Southwest's] Terms by scraping Southwest flight data and fare from Southwest's website, presenting Southwest flight data on kiwi.com, and selling Southwest flights without authorization," Ada Brown, US district judge, wrote in an order dated September 30.</p><p>The injunction stops Kiwi.com from scraping fare data, displaying tickets, and selling Southwest flights - it's the "whole nine yards," a spokesperson for Southwest's <keyword id="11899820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law" source="Orion">law</keyword> firm, Munck Wilson Mandala, told Insider via email. </p><p>Southwest sued Kiwi.com in January in US District Court in the Northern District of <keyword id="11896956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="texas" source="Orion">Texas</keyword>, saying the website breached the terms of Southwest's website by scraping fare and flight information.</p><p>"As detailed in Southwest's request for a preliminary injunction, Kiwi.com improperly inflates Southwest fares and engages in other conduct that harms both Southwest and its customers," a Southwest spokesperson said via email on Friday.</p><p>He added, "Southwest is pleased that Judge Brown has ordered Kiwi.com to stop these unauthorized activities until this matter reaches a final decision."</p><p>The injunction will remain in effect until a decision at trial or another court motion. </p><p>Brown wrote that Kiwi.com had "caused Southwest to suffer damages, including damage to its reputation and loss of goodwill from customer complaints and increased customer service burdens and disruption to operations."</p><p>Southwest is also in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-legal-battles-search-engines-skiplagged-cheap-flights-2021-7">an ongoing legal battle</a> with Skiplagged, another travel search site. The airline in previous court filings had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-kiwi-flights-skiplagged-data-lawsuit-2021-8">sought details</a> about the relationship between Skiplagged and Kiwi.com. </p><p>Southwest is "no stranger" to suing search engines and other sites that are displaying its fares, wrote Jeffrey Neuburger, co-head of law firm Proskauer Rose LLP's Technology, Media &amp; Telecommunications Group, in <a href="https://newmedialaw.proskauer.com/2021/10/04/southwest-airlines-wins-injunction-barring-travel-site-from-scraping/">a blog post</a>.</p><p>"What made this result particularly notable is that the preliminary injunction is based on the likelihood of success on the merits of Southwest's breach of contract claim and Kiwi's alleged violation of Southwest's site terms," Neuburger wrote.</p><p>Kiwi.com didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. But the company has told Insider in recent interviews that it was unreasonable for Southwest to claim it had broken the airline's website's <keyword id="12284196" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="terms-of-service" source="Orion">terms of service</keyword>.</p><p>In July, a Kiwi.com spokesperson <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-legal-battles-search-engines-skiplagged-cheap-flights-2021-7">told Insider</a>: "Southwest makes its flight and fare data publicly available to the entire internet, and it cannot legitimately prevent fare competition and price comparisons through enforcement of its browsewrap terms of use, to which Kiwi.com never agreed in any event."</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ha-stock"></a><p class="source"><span>Markets Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Deutsche Bank downgraded Hawaiian Holdings on Monday, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ha-stock">sending the stock down more than 10%.</a> </strong></li><li><strong>The bank's analyst says <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/southwest-airlines">Southwest's</a> impending launch of flights to the state pose a "direct competitive threat." </strong></li><li><strong>Researchers have found statistical evidence of a "Southwest effect" when the low-cost carrier launches in a new market. </strong></li></ul><p>Shares of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/hawaiian-airlines">Hawaiian Airlines'</a> parent company fell more than 10% on Monday as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-hawaii-ticket-sale-2019-3"><span>Southwest Airlines began to sell tickets for its inaugural flights</span></a> to the island state.</p><p>The new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/southwest-airlines">Southwest</a> route, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-says-it-has-gained-us-approval-for-hawaii-flights-2019-2"><span>which will launch March 17</span></a>, is a "direct competitive threat" to Hawaiian Airlines' business, Michael Linenberg, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, wrote in a note to clients Monday.</p><p>"This is a more direct competitive threat to Hawaiian's inter-island business (which we estimate is the company's most proﬁtable segment) than we had envisioned," the bank said, according to Bloomberg.</p><p>The bank downgraded Hawaiian Holdings to "sell," while also slashing its price target for the stock from $33 down to $27.</p><p>"HA's margins likely to be under pressure with a new inter-island competitor," Linenberg wrote. "Hawaii's inter-island market has been a challenging place to succeed when there has been more than one major operator."</p><p>Southwest isn't the first airline to add capacity to its Hawaii routes and spook investors. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/hawaiian-airlines-stock-plunges-after-downgrade-united-increase-2017-6-1002093951"><span>In 2017, United sent HA shares down more than 10%</span></a> after announcing 11 new daily flights between the US mainland and Hawaii. </p><h2>New competition could mean cheaper flights, too</h2><p>Morgan Stanley told clients earlier this month that Southwest's entrance into the Hawaiian market could mean big price cuts as airlines vie for travelers' fares.</p><p>"What we found is that a likely 10%+ capacity addition on North American routes at introductory fares from a low-cost carrier may lead to fares that are 30%+ lower versus today," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-hawaii-plane-tickets-cheaper-2019-2"><span>analyst Rajeev Lalwani said in the note.</span></a></p><p>Southwest Airlines has a history of shaking up the market for air travel, so much so that there's a term for it: The Southwest Effect.</p><p>In 2017, <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/319043805_Public_Benefits_and_Private_Success_The_Southwest_Effect_Revisited"><span>researchers at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business</span></a> published a study that found that when Southwest Airlines enters a market with nonstop flights, fare prices fall an average of 15%.
