The rain gods went a tad bit crazy over <keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword> yesterday, emptying buckets of rain from the heavens. In the span of a few hours, between 1 AM and 7 AM last night and early this morning, the city has reportedly recorded over 300 mm of rains in various parts of Mumbai. And these downpours were enough to bring the financial capital’s creaky infrastructure to its knees. Several key roads, including those near King's Circle in Dadar, were submerged underwater, causing traffic gridlock and disrupting commutes. The relentless rain caused severe waterlogging in several other areas too, with reports of knee-deep water in Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East and Powai. This led to the diversion of many BEST buses from their regular routes, causing further inconvenience for commuters. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were also impacted. Airlines like IndiGo and Vistara advised passengers to expect delays and heavy traffic congestion while travelling to the airport. IndiGo even offered passengers flying into or out of Mumbai the option to rebook their flights or get a full refund due to the weather conditions. Train services, a lifeline for Mumbaikars, were not spared either. The Central Railway's suburban network faced delays due to waterlogging at stations like CSMT, Churchgate, and LTT. However, the Western Railway managed to clear tracks using high-capacity water pumps, ensuring normal operations in their suburban section. Further, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) prioritised student safety by declaring a holiday for the first session in all BMC, government, and private schools and colleges within their jurisdiction. The decision on afternoon classes was to be made later based on the evolving situation, but a holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges today. Citizens took to social media to share their experiences, posting videos and updates on waterlogged streets and areas to avoid. However, Mumbai’s skirmish with the torrential rains is hardly over yet. <h2>Heavy rains to continue pounding Mumbai and nearby districts </h2>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast up to widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over various parts of Maharashtra over the next five days. During this period, heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) are likely over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra until Friday. Mumbai’s Regional Meteorological Centre had earlier issued a yellow alert for rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas. With heavy rain expected to continue, citizens are advised to stay cautious and avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary. IndiGo flights from Goa delayed as employees at the company’s subsidiary go on strike

Facing uncertainty over charter flights coming to Goa due to the Russia-Ukraine war and visa issues, the tourism sector in Goa has focused on domestic tourists, with the hope of a revival. As the coastal state's tourism sector is predominantly dependent on the United Kingdom and Russia, and some parts of Europe, Goa is facing difficulties this season to woo them due to the war in Europe and visa related issue with the UK. In 2019, about 71,27,000 domestic tourists arrived in Goa, while 9,31,000 were foreign tourists. But this number dropped in 2020 and 2021 as the Covid pandemic struck the coastal state. This number came down further to a mere 3 lakh domestic tourists and 32,000 foreign tourists. Around 80,000 to 90,000 people from Russia come to Goa for holidaying every year, while around 50,000 people from UK also prefer Goa. Now when the Covid pandemic is subsiding and the state had hopes that high spending foreign tourists will arrive in Goa, the war between Russia and <keyword id="6355101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword> has dashed the hope. Sources at Goa airport informed that some flights from Russia were cancelled which were scheduled for October. "Yes, some flights from Russia are cancelled. However we have hopes that from November things will improve," an officer said on condition of anonymity. Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) president Nilesh Shah told IANS that because of the war between Russia and Ukraine bookings have come down and cancellations have also happened. "However people from Russia are willing to come Goa. From November three charter flights (per week) will arrive in Goa," Shah said. Speaking about UK tourists, Shah said that if the visa issue gets resolved as assured by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant then it will be good for the tourism industry. "From November one flight from UK will arrive in Goa every week. If the UK visa issue is resolved then the flights will increase from 1 to 5. They may increase even more," Shah said. "The last two years have been bad, compared to that this is a good start. We are hopeful that things will improve. But our focus will be on domestic tourists as they will come to Goa," he added. He said that if the visa issue gets resolved then the number of tourists from the UK will go up from December and January. According to Goa Forward president and MLA Vijai Sardesai earlier 35 to 40 per cent tourists from Russia used to arrive in Goa every year. But now due to the Russia and <keyword id="2088696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ukraine-war" source="Orion">Ukraine war</keyword> these tourists will not come. "Hence now we need to fill this space from England," he said. Sardesai claimed that the state will face a loss of Rs 500 crore if tourists from the United Kingdom don't arrive on account of hindrances in getting a visa. Sardesai had said earlier that Goa is facing cancellation of 7 to 8 bookings per day in small and medium hotels, due to the new visa restriction by the Ministry of External Affairs, where British tourists have to seek a visa from nine centres (Visa Processing) in England. "This (lifting restriction) is important because in Goa annually minimum 40,000 to 50,000 tourists arrive from the UK. As per statistics of pre pandemic period each tourist spends around Rs 98,000, which means around a Rs 500 crore turnover takes place from this area," Sardesai had said. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that the Union Home Ministry has given an assurance to resolve the issue of the United Kingdom visas as soon as possible. "I have discussed UK visa issue with Home Minister Amit Shah. It will be sorted out soon. There were some foreign ministry related issues, hence it was getting delayed. But he has assured to resolve it as soon as possible," Sawant said. Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte had also said during the last assembly session that Goa is predominately dependent on two markets, UK and Russia, and some parts of Europe. Star Air Launches Non-stop Flight Services to Surat from Belagavi and Ajmer (Kishangarh)

<ul><li>There are approximately 470 aeroplanes in the country as of 2017. </li><li>This number is projected to triple by the next decade. </li><li>The country is lagging behind on infrastructural growth that can accommodate new flights and aircrafts. </li></ul>The Indian aviation industry has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/indian-carriers-are-all-fuelled-up-but-have-nowhere-to-land/articleshow/64641622.cms">hit a snag</a>, the airports are running out of preferred slots and parking space. The lack of flying slots and spaces to park aircrafts is due to the the fact that the airports are super busy and working overtime. What this has lead to, besides flight operators having to fight out for slots and space, is a bottleneck for the country’s growth in aviation. And this issue is mostly affecting newer airline carriers like Vistara and AirAsia which are rapidly expanding its business but have to deal with ‘undesirable’ slots for their operations. Since its inception Indian aviation industry has grown significantly. From 381 airplanes in 2008 to approximately 480 in 2017 along with <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/india-set-to-become-third-largest-buyer-of-passenger-planes/articleshow/58937405.cms">plans</a> to buy more aircrafts to deal with increasing flight demands, the industry’s growth in on an upward curve. The country is looking at nearly 1080 aeroplanes, out of which, more than 700 are scheduled for delivery within the next decade, and 400 within the next five years. As of June last year, a total of 880 aircrafts were on order, with most of them being placed by low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet. And this bulk demand as left <keyword id="6355752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="airport">airport</keyword> authorities concerned.

 While more aircrafts mean more flights and therefore more money coming in for these airline operators, the airports are not adequately equipped to accommodate all the airplanes at the same time. And this leads to the airports only being able to offer slots at ‘undesirable’ hours, time slots that are not very popular with travellers, for newer flights. The Mumbai and Delhi airports, which are among the busiest in the world, are so packed with flights that they are only offering new slots between 11PM and 5AM. Airports in Goa and Pune are also offering only night slots. Airports in Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata also don't have any slots open during peak timings. What is making matters worse for domestic carriers is that even smaller airports like Jaipur, Jammu, Srinagar and Patna and many more are facing similar issues and can offer time slots that aren’t popular. Currently, 97% of the slots on the Mumbai airport are with the older airline carriers. In Delhi and Bengaluru, 89% and 86% are with older airlines respectively. At Chennai and Pune, the share is about 93% and 91% respectively.

The government has big plans of linking smaller, less-served areas to bigger airports under its regional connectivity programme - and this would just mean more congestion. Parking space in airports is also a major concern, but the country has already started to address this problem. All airports, excluding Mumbai, have started building parking bays. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been set in action and plans to add 273 parking bays at 24 airports to help resolve parking issues. AAI is also trying to increase airside capacity by increasing work efficiency to address this congestion problem.
