Moreover, rising crude oil prices also weighed on the local unit. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit moved in a narrow range. It opened at 83.49 against the American currency and touched 83.50 in initial trade. On Monday, the rupee settled for the day lower by 10 paise at 83.50 against the US dollar. The <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>'s positive economic outlook, with solid growth and unchanged inflation projections, suggests that there is less room for any early cuts amid prospects of rising inflation. This is likely to benefit the rupee from a favourable interest rate differential, said CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari. Further, Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) have resumed their buying. FIIs were net buyers in the capital markets on Monday, as they purchased shares worth Rs 2,572.38 crore, according to exchange data. Moreover, anticipated inflows such as Reliance Infrastructure raising USD 350 million, SpiceJet planning to raise USD 250 million, and Clix Capital aiming to raise USD 600 million are likely to benefit the rupee, Pabari said. Given these factors, the rupee is expected to swing within a range of 82.90 to 83.70, he added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was at 105.12, lower by 0.02 per cent. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.20 per cent to USD 81.47 per barrel. On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 155.45 points, or 0.20 per cent lower at 76,334.63 points. Rupee opens flat against US dollar in early trade

Rupee turns flat at 83.87 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: The rupee fell sharply by 15 paise against the US dollar to 83.44 in early trade on Wednesday amid muted trends in the domestic equity markets. However, a decline in the dollar index and a marginal fall in the Brent crude index prevented further losses in the domestic unit, according to experts. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 84.38 -- down 9 paise from its previous close -- and then slid further to 84.44, registering a decline of 15 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee pared its intra-day losses to settle flat at 84.29 against the US dollar. "The <keyword id="24182640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-banking-liquidity" source="keywords">Indian banking liquidity</keyword> fell into deficit as industry players paid Rs 1.6-1.8 lakh crore as GST payment. This was after two months that liquidity has fallen into a deficit as the RBI also intervened into forex markets to defend the rupee weighing on liquidity conditions," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "The rupee may be in the broad range of 84.00 to 84.50 in the near term as markets await a slew of data from the US this evening," Bhansali added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.15 per cent to 106.84. However, a positive sentiment in the domestic as well as global equity markets and a weak American currency supported the rupee, <keyword id="19950258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex" source="keywords">forex</keyword> traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 83.93 and slipped further to trade at its previous session's closing level of 83.94 against the greenback. On Wednesday, the rupee settled 3 paise higher at 83.94 against the US dollar. The forex markets were closed on Thursday on account of the Independence Day. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading marginally lower by 0.01 per cent at 102.80. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.25 per cent to USD 80.84 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex surged 811.34 points, or 1.03 per cent, to 79,917.22 points. The broader Nifty also climbed 246.20 points, or 1.02 per cent, to 24,389.95 points. "In these five years, only 2020 saw average flat sizes in MMR see an annual rise of 21% against 2019. Since 2020, homes in the region are shrinking,” said Anuj Puri, chairman, Anarock Group. However, this is an outlier. "The central concerns were affordability and millennials’ preference for low-maintenance homes. 2020 saw an abrupt reversal of buyer preferences. With a sudden emphasis on the WFH and study-from-home culture, flat sizes began increasing for the first time in four years.” On a yearly basis, the average flat sizes in the top seven cities in Q1 2023 rose 5% – to about 1,225 sq. ft. from about 1,170 sq. ft. in Q1 2022. MMR and Chennai were the exceptions as they saw a 6% and 5% decrease, respectively, in average flat sizes during the period. “A perception among developers that there is currently sufficient existing supply of larger format homes may be a factor,” said Anarock, explaining the decrease in MMR as well as Chennai. “Also, while MMR is hyper-expensive, Chennai is a very cost-sensitive market. There has been increased new supply by the leading and listed developers, who also reported robust housing sales. While Delhi sold fewer units at 14,970 as compared to MMR, in percentage terms its sales went up 46% annually. Pune registered a quarterly sales growth at 3% and annually, its growth stood at 45%. NCR, MMR, Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad together accounted for 90% of the sales for the quarter. The sales in Chennai and Kolkata made up 10% of the total sales. Residential property prices across these top seven cities registered a quarterly increase in the range of 1-2% in Q3 2022. On an annual basis, prices have risen in the range of 4-7% primarily due to an increase in input costs and demand comeback post Covid, Anarock said. Mumbai, Hyderabad top new unit additions MMR is also on the top when it comes to new properties. The region added 36,000 new units in the quarter and overtook Hyderabad – the city which ranks second in terms of new additions – by a large margin. Hyderabad added 15,530 units during the quarter, while in NCR, it was much lower at 6,400 units. MMR, Hyderabad, Pune and Bengaluru together accounted for 86% of the total new property additions, says Anarock. As many as 93,500 new units were launched across the top seven cities, against 82,100 units in the preceding quarter — registering a 14% growth. On a yearly basis, there was a 45% jump of new real estate property launched. In Q3 2021, 64,560 units were launched in the top seven cities across the country. Analysing based on price segments, the survey estimated that 36% of total new supply was in the mid-segment (₹40-80 lakh), 28% in the premium segment (₹80 lakh-₹1.5 cr); 18% each in the luxury and affordable segments. The rupee witnessed range-bound trading against the <keyword id="19949640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-dollar" source="keywords">US dollar</keyword> in early trade on Wednesday and fell 3 paise amid a negative trend in domestic <keyword id="19925781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equities" source="keywords">equities</keyword>. <keyword id="20024982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex-traders" source="keywords">Forex traders</keyword> said the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and elevated crude oil prices also weighed on the local unit and restricted the upmove. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.45 and lost further ground to trade at 83.46 against the greenback in initial deals, registering a decrease of 3 paise from its previous closing level. On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated 4 paise and settled at 83.46 against the greenback. "The Indian rupee closed higher on Tuesday and opened flat with most Asian currencies range-bound to weaker. Rupee is expected to remain in a range of 83.35 to 83.55 with dips to be bought by importers," said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading marginally higher by 0.05 per cent at 105.66. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.42 per cent higher at USD 85.37 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 81.42 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 77,972.10 points. The broader NSE Nifty fell 36.05 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 23,685.25 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,175.91 crore, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das on Tuesday asserted that the high interest rates are not impeding growth, and made it clear that the monetary policy will "unambiguously" focus on getting down inflation going forward. The country is at the threshold of a "major structural shift" in its growth trajectory and is moving towards a path where 8 per cent real GDP growth can be sustained on a yearly basis, Das said addressing an event by Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
