<ul><li>Avast has found that simple flashlight apps in the Google Play Store ask of 25 permissions, on average. </li><li>Of the 937 apps analysed by Avast, 77 were asking for the right to record audio with others asking for permission to edit contact lists. </li><li>But since flashlight apps are so common and users are normally giving these permissions anyway, it is difficult to tag them are malicious. </li></ul>The smartphone’s flashlight only needs access to your camera’s flash in order to function properly. In spite of this, flashlight apps in the Google Play Store seek 25 permissions in order to function. Avast analysed 937 flashlight apps in the Play Store and found that 77 were asking for the right to record audio. While 180 apps wanted permission to read contact lists and 21 apps even wanted to be able to edit your contact list. "The flashlight apps we looked into are just an example of how even the simplest apps can access personal data, and it’s often not just the app developers that gain access to data when users download an app, but the ad partners they work with, to monetize," said Luis Corrons, Security Evangelist at Avast, in a statement. So why are these still on the Play Store? When it comes to flagging apps in the Google Play Store, requesting too many permissions is a a gray area. It’s difficult to tag these apps as malicious or potentially unwanted since it’s the users give permission to access to their smartphones. When users give these permissions to an app, they’re also giving them away to any third parties that are associated. This also gives them permission to carry out changes in the phone’s app list’s permission section. So app developers can essentially integrate ad software into the original app’s code in order to earn extra money. But in order for the integrated software development kits (SDKs) to work, the app needs all those extra permissions in the first place. "Developer privacy policies are unfortunately not inclusive, as in many cases, further privacy policies from third-parties are linked within them," said Corrons. According to the statement, Goldenshores would collect certain kinds of information in order to improve the program. The FTC is taking issue with the fact that the company neglected to mention that the app would give this info to third-party advertisers.

Mobile app downloads slow down in India — dip below five billion

Worse, Microsoft's app store is filled with fakes and ripoffs - and some of those are among the 100 most popular.
A 30-page report published today by <a href="http://jackdawresearch.com/state-of-windows-phone-report/">Jackdaw Research</a> highlights how bad the situation is. 
For instance:

<li>A search for "YouTube" on the Windows Phone returns dozens of obvious fake YouTube apps. Check out a screenshot here. The official Microsoft app is circled. (Google won't make one.)</li>

<li>A search for "Swing Copters," a game for iOS and Android created by the maker of "Flappy Bird," returns more than 25 fake apps with "Swing Copters" in their title. In fact, the app isn't available for Windows Phone.</li>
<li>Of the top 100 most popular apps, 38 of them are also available on iOS and Android (in other words, Windows Phone has very few exclusives), 38 are generic apps like flashlights, 9 are substitutes for popular apps that haven't come to Windows Phone yet (like Snapchat), 8 are fakes, and 7 were made by Microsoft. </li>
<li>There's usually a lag of at least 200 days between the time a popular app comes to iOS and Android and when it comes to Windows Phone. Microsoft's platform is almost never in the first wave of releases.</li>

The paper also suggests that Microsoft may never be able to turn it around. Because Windows Phone's market share is so low - it peaked at 3.4% in the last quarter of 2013, and has since fallen to 2.8%, according to IDC - that developers see little reason to build apps for it. The lack of apps drives people to other platforms, which keeps popularity low, which keeps app count low, and so on, into a death spiral. 
The researchers don't think Windows 10 will help. Microsoft says with Windows 10, programmers will be able to make apps for PC,s tablets, and phones without much extra work for each platform. But the types of apps that are needed on Windows Phone typically aren't the same kinds of apps made for PCs, and developers may not do the work necessary to customize their apps for the smaller screen because, again, there's not enough opportunity to justify the cost.
Jackdaw's recommendation for Microsoft? Build a great flagship phone, explain what Windows Phone actually stands for, and somehow convince developers that they can make money on the platform.
Easier said than done.

Look How Awful The App Situation Is For Windows Phone

The Google Play store for Android apps store has been dealing with a few sketchy programs lately, like the <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/6/5181472/brightest-flashlight-free-ftc-location-data-settlement">recent flashlight app that was caught selling personal user data without permission</a>.
But Google has a nifty feature that can help protect your Android phone with a feature called Verify Apps. This tool can prevent you from downloading dangerous apps from Google Play and other sources. It also continuously scans your device for harmful apps.
Here's how it works:
The settings to activate this feature will vary based on your Android software.
If you are using something lower than Android 4.2, go to the settings menu and navigate to Google Settings &gt; Verify App. Go to Settings &gt; Security &gt; Verify apps if you are running Android 4.2 or higher.
The program can work two ways.
If you decide to download an app from an unknown source, Google will give you a warning that this could be dangerous. It recommends that you shouldn't install the app, but you can choose to ignore this warning at the bottom.

Unfortunately, a few apps can slip through the cracks. Verify Apps continuously scans your device for dangerous programs. This warning should appear if there is an app on your phone or tablet containing malware that Verify couldn't detect upon installation.

How to download iOS 12, Apple's big new iPhone update

A couple of weeks ago, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/android-app-tweaks-app-permissions-2013-11">we told you about the feature called App Ops</a> available in Google's Android smartphone operating system. It let you decide what you wanted to allow each app to do. Were you cool with the app waking up the device? Tracking your location? Accessing your address book or camera? You got to choose.
A lot of apps need access to features to work correctly. Others track all kinds of information about you for other reasons, like selling ads.
Google had introduced the App Ops feature in Android 4.3, known as Jellybean. A lot of Android phones currently run 4.3, but it's not the latest version of Android. The latest version is Android 4.4, known as KitKat. And with KitKat, Google got rid of that feature.
At first, Google didn't completely kill it, just hid it. A free app called <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.colortiger.appopsinstaller">App Ops by developer Color Tiger </a>was quickly released that brought it back.
Now Google has turned around and released a new version of KitKat, 4.4.2, in which it removed the App Ops feature altogether. The Color Tiger app can't bring it back, it confirmed to Business Insider. (<a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.colortiger.appopsinstaller">Though the company says its trying to come up with a fix</a>).
So with KitKat 4.4.2, if you don't want a flashlight app or game to track your location, or tap into your address book, too bad.
On Tuesday, the EEF wrote a blog post praising Google for putting that feature into Jellybean, <a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/11/awesome-privacy-features-android-43">calling it "awesome."</a> On Friday, it blasted Google, for removing it from KitKat<a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/12/google-removes-vital-privacy-features-android-shortly-after-adding-them"> writing: </a>
The disappearance of App Ops is alarming news for Android users. The fact that they cannot turn off app permissions is a Stygian hole in the Android security model, and a billion people's data is being sucked through. Embarrassingly, it is also one that Apple managed to fix in iOS years ago. A moment ago, it looked as though Google cared about this massive privacy problem. Now we have our doubts.
Google declined comment on why it removed the App Ops feature. However one Googler Dianne Hackborn <a href="https://plus.google.com/+DannyHolyoake/posts/FkfBxA5i3iG">explained on Google+</a> that the feature was never supposed to be made available to people who own Android devices. Google created it for Google engineers to help them test apps, she said.
