According to a survey by job-search platform Firstnaukri, almost two-third of the freshers graduating this year are jobless at the moment as campus hirings take a hit. In fact, the situation isn’t any better for even those who do have a job offer. According to the report, nearly 44% of the graduates who have a job offer said that their companies have deferred the joining dates while the rest saw their employment offers being revoked as businesses cut down costs to keep up with the operations. The withdrawal of job offers by several companies has left many students stranded as the placement policy at several colleges does not allow a student — who has been offered once — to sit for other placements. Even the students at the premier IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) — who bagged ‘above-average’ salary packages — are left without a job. Gartner, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/uber-has-revoked-job-offers-made-to-graduates-from-iims-mdi-spjimr/articleshow/75740158.cms">Uber</a> also revoked job offers extended to the management graduates at IIMs. The unemployment rate in India swelled to over 23% during the lockdown period, <a href="https://unemploymentinindia.cmie.com/kommon/bin/sr.php?kall=wshowtab&amp;tabno=0002">according to</a> the Centre of Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). However, as the industries reopened and resumed operations, the unemployment also declined — showing signs of revival. The urban unemployment rate during the week ending June 28 stood at 10.6%. Freshers get busy with upskilling But as the situation might not get better anytime soon, freshers are now turning to referrals and tracing their alumni network while hunting for job opportunities. Given the uncertainty, graduates are focussing on reskilling more than ever. With the availability of free skilling courses, the survey highlights that more than 70% of the college students have already enrolled in reskilling courses online. The companies hiring are also looking for students who are prepped for the future and are shifting to virtual assessments and video interviews to assess their potential hires. “It will be imperative for students to start preparing for remote interviews as a new way of getting hired,” the report said. “The pandemic has hit placement prospects of the 2020 batch across 82% colleges. It has further impacted internship offers of 74% pre-final year students. However, students are not losing morale and going virtual for their learning as well as job interviews. In fact, most companies are also using new-age technology to hire remotely,” said Sharad Sindhwani, CBO at Firstnaukri.com. More than half of India's college graduates are jobless and they want to upskill themselves in the hope for employment

New Delhi, July 1 (IANSlife) The pandemic has adversely affected the campus-hiring scenario across the nation. Amid the panic of unemployment and lay-offs, one-third of the students confirmed that they have a job offer at hand. Out of these students, close to 44 per cent reported that their joining dates have been delayed while another 9 per cent confirmed that their offers have been rolled back, says a survey. Close to 33 per cent said that the employers are not responding to them on the status of their job offers. Now, a majority of students are fast switching to online job portals to hunt for a job while another 17 per cent are taking the referral route and connecting with their college alumni, the survey adds. Firstnaukri.com, an end-to-end campus hiring platform conducted the survey with students across campuses in India with aim to understand the pulse on placements and internships amidst the current crisis. The companies are postponing campus drives and resorting to new age technology solutions, including virtual interviews and online assessments to recruit candidates from various campuses. It will be imperative for students to start preparing for remote interviews as the new way of being hired. The Covid-19 jobseeker study was done to gauge the impact of ongoing pandemic on fresher placements in India. The survey was carried out with the college students of all batches (2020 to 2023) across several courses. The results are based on over 1,300+ responses out of which 80 percent are responses from students pursuing BE/B.Tech degree. In these tough times, online courses and certifications are the first choices amongst freshers to bridge any skill/knowledge gap. Seventy per cent of college students have already subscribed to online courses. Interestingly, the current pandemic has not impacted the higher education plans of 80 percent surveyed graduates. During the 6-month program, the apprentices will be trained on warehousing and inventory management skills for the roles of warehouse associates and process associates. “At Amazon, our business is naturally aligned to the government's priorities of enabling skilling and job creation. For us skilling is not only meaningful but a sustainable and long-term approach. We are deeply invested in creating opportunities for the youth which will help them secure gainful and skilled employment in the future,” said Swati Rustagi, Director of Human Resources, Amazon India Operations. Meanwhile, learning platform <keyword id="1017386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coursera">Coursera</keyword> has partnered with the government of Telangana through Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK) and aims to train 50,000 unemployed youth. Over 3800 courses will be made available for these young people. The present pandemic induced slowdown should be seen as an opportunity and used effectively by students, graduates seeking jobs as well as professionals who are between jobs, to skill themselves in areas that are less likely to be impacted by a crisis of this nature” said Shrikant Sinha, CEO, TASK in a statement. Students and employees take to upskilling Given the uncertainty, graduates are focussing on reskilling more than ever. With the availability of free skilling courses, a survey by FirstNaukri highlights that more than 70% of the college students have already enrolled in reskilling courses online. The companies hiring are also looking for students who are prepped for the future. Within organizations too, corporates should look at offering new digital skill learning opportunities to their employees. “Digital and soft skills that were once considered as add-ons, have suddenly become a necessity. To survive in this new normal, organizations need to train their employees in skills such as cloud computing, emerging technologies, virtual collaboration and communication to equip employees to function seamlessly in the remote working model,” said Lakshmi Mittra, VP, Center of Excellence (CoE) and Clover Academy, Clover Infotech.
