<ul class="summary-list"><li>A variant of <keyword id="8775508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="remdesivir">remdesivir</keyword>, one of the most promising treatments for <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword>, has for more than a year been sold as a treatment for sick cats via a black market connected to big Facebook groups.</li><li>The drug, called <keyword id="9365602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gs-441524">GS-441524</keyword>, is being sold as a purported cure for Feline Infectious Peritonitis, which is caused by a <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>, the same family of pathogen that causes COVID-19 in humans. </li><li>Despite not being licensed as a treatment for <keyword id="759794" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fip">FIP</keyword> by the Food and Drugs Administration, the drug is being sold to US consumers by Chinese firms, with courses sold for up to $10,000.</li><li>The transactions do not take place on Facebook's platform, but large cat owner groups have banded together to connect buyers to sellers, and attempt to screen the drug for purity.</li><li>An academic who pioneered using the drug on cats says that a black market is the only option because pharma giant Gilead, which has the rights to GS, will not license it for use in cats.</li><li>Critics say the unlicensed trade can lead to dangerous, low-quality drugs which could even find their way into human use.</li></ul>As the world seeks a way out the coronavirus crisis, there are hopes that the drug remdesivir may provide part of the solution.The drug is already being used on seriously ill patients after being fast-tracked by medical authorities in the US, though <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/07/health/remdesivir-donation-runs-out-coronavirus/index.html">supplies are limited</a> and it may be some time before it becomes more widely available. A Facebook spokesperson directed Business Insider to the site's policies, which ban the sale of illegal or prescription drugs on the platform, and encourage users to report drug sales. It also said it is using automated technology to scan and identify instances. Business Insider has seen price lists from vendors of the drug suggesting that it is being sold for as much as $10,000 a course, and sent to the US under the guise of a dietary supplement.Some people have also tried to buy it as a backstreet coronavirus remedy for human use, but it is not clear how widespread this is.The cat disease in question is Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Cats with FIP suffer fever, weight loss and breathing difficulties, and nearly always die.It's caused by a type of a coronavirus — the same family of pathogen that causes COVID-19 in humans. Though they are genetically related, the FIP coronavirus does not cause COVID-19, and vice-versa.The drug being used to treat it is GS-441524, or GS for short. It is being marketed and sold by companies based in China, which ship it to the US.Emeritus Professor Niels Pedersen, a veterinary <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> expert at University of California Davis, says he personally pioneered its use on cats.Pedersen reluctantly supports cat owners seeking to administer the drug to their pets, since there is no legal way to acquire the drug. He told Business Insider that FIP is "now 80% or more curable" with GS.Professor Margaret Hosie, an FIP researcher at the University of Glasgow, told Business Insider that she too had heard anecdotal reports of GS being effective. The closed Facebook groups are also full of stories of GS working.But the Food and Drugs Administration told Business Insider it has not licensed GS-441524 as a treatment for FIP, <a href="https://www.fda.gov/drugs/enforcement-activities-fda/unapproved-drugs">which means it is illegal to sell it as such in the US</a>.Some sites market it instead as a human dietary supplement, Pedersen said, which allows it to be shipped to the US.One campaigner, Anna Mitchell, who has spent a year investigating the GS black market, has called for it to be closed down. Mitchell started to investigate after her own cat got FIP, she told Business Insider."However the injections, the web of lies [about the effectiveness of the drug] and the misinformation is rampant," she said."And I am also worried that pretty soon the model we are seeing develop could spread to [unlicensed treatments for] other feline diseases and also human diseases."Oksana Pyzik, a senior teaching fellow in the School of Pharmacy at University College London, is an expert on the illegal pharmaceuticals market. She told Business Insider that the batches of GS being produced in China could be dangerous."Any medicine that has not been properly investigated for its quality means that we don't know what is inside, whether it is contaminated, whether it has any of the active pharmaceutical ingredients it claims to have," she said.<h2>In Facebook groups, desperate pet owners speak of a "miracle cure" </h2><div type="image" title="Cat2 by Getty Images" height="1500" width="2000" msid="76260297" hostid="261"></div>Facebook groups with thousands of members have have developed in response to the spread of FIP. In the groups, members exchange support and advice on how to treat cats with the disease — and stories of what they claim are the amazing curative powers of GS.Members speak often of <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=pedersen+study+FIP&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enGB838GB838&amp;oq=pedersen+study+FIP&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.4745j0j8&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8">a promising February 2019 field study</a> by Pedersen, the UC Davis professor.A field study is a collection of information outside a lab setting. In Pedersen's study he dosed 31 cats suffering FIP with GS. 25 survived and recovered. Robin Kintz, who started the 23,000-member group FIP Warriors, told Business Insider: "When my kitten Henry was diagnosed in February of 2019, I searched the internet for answers and solutions."I came across Dr. Pedersen's research using GS-441525 and then went onto Facebook searching for sources of this miracle drug."GS-441525 was used in clinical trials on humans while the Ebola outbreak was raging in 2012. However, the trials failed.After this, Pedersen began experimenting to see if GS could work on animals, he told Business Insider. In an email, he said that GS and remdesivir are very similar, a conclusion <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352771420300380#!">backed by other researchers</a>.Pedersen said that he asked permission to legally make GS for cats, but was rejected by Gilead, the pharmaceuticals firm that owns the rights to it.Pedersen claims that Gilead is worried that allowing GS to be used on cats would harm its ability to profit from its use in humans. The company did not respond to several requests to comment. Pedersen said that desperate pet owners have been driven to the black market as a result.He is convinced the drug works, and claims that 10,000 cats worldwide have been treated for FIP using GS thanks to his research."This disease, which is virtually always fatal and accounts for 0.3-1.3% of all deaths of cats in the world, is now 80% or more curable with GS-441524," he said.Pedersen also referred to an earlier statement where he defended helping the black market groups.He wrote: "I will continue to provide as much advice as possible for owners and veterinarians using and contemplating the use of black-market GS and GC to treat cats with FIP."He told Business Insider that his veterinary oath compelled him to help pet owners administer the treatment. The statement continued: "I must make it clear that I would have preferred these drugs to be approved and commercialized in the normal manner. I am certain that this will happen within the next few years, and as it does, the black market demand for drugs like GS and GC will wane."<h2>Sold online for as much as $10,000 </h2>But Mitchell, the anti-black market campaigner, says that the support Pedersen has offered to individuals administering illegal GS has encouraged a potentially dangerous black market. "It ballooned in Facebook groups — specifically one that has become gigantic and is really the supply route between the manufacturers and their buyers in the US," she said.The cost of a course of treatment can come to about $10,000. Other cats are said to relapse after seeing symptoms briefly improve. Kintz, the group administrator, said that some pets experience negative side-effects, but that the group makes efforts to screen batches for purity."Lesions and painful injections are the two most common side effects of the medication. Some sores are worse than others but all resolve with time," said Kintz."Early on when this group was formed, we were able to have several different 'brands' of GS vials tested in a reputable university lab and the results confirmed the biological activity of the GS," she said.Kintz also said the group asks for free batches from suppliers to give to owners who cannot afford the drug."They use the vials as a mini field trial. If the kitties get better, we know it is working."<h2>Humans who believe GS might be a coronavirus treatment seek it out in Facebook cat groups </h2>Recent clinical trials for remdesivir as a treatment for COVID-19 have been so encouraging that Gilead recently signed an agreement with several firms in India and Pakistan to increase production of the drug. However, a form of the drug is still not expected to be widely available on the legitimate market for many months.Pyzik, the pharmaceuticals expert, expressed concern that people pursuing a treatment for COVID-19 could seek out unlicensed forms on the black market. "It is incredibly serious to take a medicine when we don't understand the full nature of its effects in someone that has a coronavirus infection."Again, premature use can lead to a whole series of very serious side effects that can have long lasting disabilities for a person in the future," she said. Kintz said that some had inquired through her group about getting GS to treat COVID-19. "One or two people have reached [out] wanting to get GS for the human coronavirus but we have not gotten involved with that at all," she wrote.

"Transmission in felines, as with people, is primarily airborne, although contaminated food and water bowls, etc. can also be a source," says Carol Osborne, DVM, integrative veterinarian at <a href="https://www.chagrinfallspetclinic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chagrin Falls Pet Clinic</a>.Cats can contract the disease from other cats, but <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.html#Pets-and-Animals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most often they get it from humans</a>. Cat owners love to express physical affection to their pets, but this close contact can make it easy for viral particles to pass from one host to another. "This is especially an issue if you kiss, hug, or let your cat lick you," says Chyrle Bonk, DVM, veterinarian at <a href="https://www.hepper.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hepper</a>.<h2>Can cats transmit COVID-19?</h2>Cats can spread the disease to other household felines. That said, in experiments of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/research-suggests-cats-give-coronavirus-to-other-cats-asymptomatic-2020-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cat-to-cat transmission</a>, infected cats usually developed <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/1999-4915/13/8/1550/htm#B27-viruses-13-01550" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asymptomatic infections</a>. In a multi-cat household, you can slow transmission by isolating the infected cat.No evidence suggests cats can transmit COVID-19 to dogs. However, cats may be able to transmit the disease to other species of pets, such as hamsters or ferrets. Research suggests feral cats played a role in the spread of COVID-19 between two separate mink farms, suggesting <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7263917/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interspecies transmission</a> is possible.Currently there are <a href="https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/covid-19/sars-cov-2-animals-including-pets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">no records</a> of humans contracting the virus from cats. It's very unlikely cats could easily transmit the virus to humans, for <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/117/42/26382" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two reasons</a>:<ul><li>A brief shedding period: When cats contract the virus, they only shed particles for a short time (around 5 days or less). </li><li>Reinfection rate: Most infected cats develop a robust antibody response, which protects them from getting infected a second time.</li></ul>These factors mean that there is a very short, temporary time in which a cat is infectious. Unless a cat lives in an unusually crowded setting, widespread transmission is unlikely.<h2>Can feline coronavirus cause COVID-19?</h2>SARS-CoV-2 is one of many coronaviruses that can infect mammals. It's not the same as feline coronavirus, a common virus in cats that typically causes mild diarrhea. "COVID-19 is caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. This new virus is a betacoronavirus and is completely unrelated to feline coronavirus, which is an alphacoronavirus," says Jonathan Roberts, veterinarian and consultant for <a href="http://excitedcats.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Excited Cats.</a> In other words, the virus that causes COVID-19 is genetically quite different from feline coronavirus. An infection of feline coronavirus cannot cause COVID-19. If it spreads within a population of cats, however, there is a chance it could mutate and cause a rare disease called <a href="https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/feline-infectious-peritonitis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">feline infectious peritonitis</a> (FIP). Important: A cat with FIP may display symptoms that resemble COVID-19, like shortness of breath or fever. But unlike COVID-19, FIP is almost always fatal for cats without treatment. If your pet is ill, you'll need to take them to a veterinarian right away.<h2>What about other pets?</h2>In February 2021, global tallies showed <a href="https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/covid-19/sars-cov-2-animals-including-pets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">115 domestic cats</a> had contracted COVID-19, compared to 81 dogs and one pet ferret. Since pets aren't widely tested, this tally is likely an undercount. But the low numbers imply that pets rarely contract COVID-19 from their owners.A 2020 study suggests <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-20097-0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cats are more susceptible</a> to developing COVID-19 than dogs. Researchers examined 603 dogs and 316 cats from around Italy. They found 3.3% of dogs and 5.8% of cats had measurable antibody levels. Cats developed a higher level of antibodies than dogs, which means their immune systems may react more strongly to the virus. That said, they're still far less likely to become sick than humans.<h2>What to do if you think your cat could have COVID-19</h2>If your cat shows signs of COVID-19, contact your veterinarian for guidance. Many veterinary clinics offer telemedicine consultations when necessary. Video examinations can be especially helpful if you yourself are quarantining.A veterinarian can usually screen your cat's symptoms without needing a COVID-19 test for confirmation. Dogs and cats <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/animals/animal-testing.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">typically aren't tested for COVID-19</a> unless there is a risk of widespread animal infection, such as an outbreak at an animal shelter. If a test is necessary, your veterinarian will contact state officials for further steps. Important: The antibody tests used for animals are different from those used on humans. You cannot use a human COVID-19 test to gauge your pet's <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword>.When caring for a sick cat, the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/covid-19/pets.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC recommends</a> you:<ul><li>DO isolate your cat to one room of the house (much like you'd do when caring for a sick human).</li><li>DO keep a log of their symptoms and tell your veterinarian about changes in their condition.</li><li>DO NOT let your sick cat outside, even if it is normally an outside cat.</li><li>DO NOT put a mask on your cat. Doing so could cause breathing difficulties.</li><li>DO NOT try to clean your cat's fur with hydrogen peroxide, hand sanitizer, or other chemical cleaning agents. Your veterinarian can offer more guidance on bathing your cat, if needed.</li></ul>Your pet can likely resume their normal routine after they've gone at least three days without symptoms. To date, few cats have <a href="https://bvajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/vetr.247" target="_blank" rel="noopener">died from COVID-19</a>. Most cats can return to good health "with proper supportive care, fluids, and good nutrition," says Osborne. <h2>Protecting your cat if you have COVID-19</h2>If you have COVID-19, one of the most effective ways to avoid infecting your cat is to keep your distance, as difficult as that may feel. "If possible, have someone else take care of your cat until you are free from symptoms," says Bonk. Doing so will allow you to rest and your cat to get quality care.If you cannot arrange pet care, you still have options for lowering the risk of transmission. Yes, cats can get COVID-19, but they're unlikely to become seriously ill

But while the Giants have more household names, it is the upstart Royals, playing in their first postseason since 1985, who are going to lift the World Series trophy at the end.
Here are the four biggest reasons:
The Giants pitching is not as good as you might think.
Starting pitching is often the biggest factor in a short series like the World Series. The Giants are the National League club, have big-name pitchers, and a reputation for having good starting pitching.
But while the Giants starting pitching is good, it is not as deep as year's past and the Royals staff is much better than most may realize.
Here is the second-half Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) numbers for the projected starting pitchers for each game. FIP is similar to ERA but takes into account that pitchers have different defenses and pitch in different ballparks, and is generally considered a better indicator of how well a pitcher is pitching.

 The Giants will start two very good pitchers (Madison Bumgarner, Jake Peavy) and two mediocre pitchers (Tim Hudson, Ryan Vogelsong). Meanwhile, all four of the Royals' starting pitchers have posted a second-half FIP under 3.75.
The result is a decided pitching advantage for the Giants in just two games (2 and 6) and a slight advantage in two more (1 and 5) while the Royals have a decided advantage in the other three games.
The Royals have a real DH.
Until Major League Baseball gets smart and starts using the designated hitter in the National League, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-dh-in-the-national-league-is-now-inevitable-2013-5">something that is inevitable</a>, the American League will almost always have an offensive advantage in the World Series, especially when the AL team has home field advantage as the Royals do.
The reason is that most AL teams have a designated DH, a guy who is used to, and mentally prepared for, sitting long periods of time in between at bats.
This season, the Giants played ten interleague games in AL parks. While that is a small sample, it is enough to at least give us a sense that they are not very good at it. Giants DHs hit .231 with no home runs and a .516 OPS during the regular season.
Meanwhile, Billy Butler started 108 games at DH for the Royals. That's his job and while he is not great (.259 avg, .642 OPS as a DH), he is better than what the Giants can throw out there (Michael Morse?).

The Royals have a secret weapon just waiting to be unleashed.
Much has been made of how the Royals are in the World Series in large part because of their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kansas-city-royals-james-shields-trade-2014-10">gutsy decision to trade their best prospect for James Shields</a>. Often forgotten is that the Royals also received relief pitcher Wade Davis in that deal with the Tampa Bay Rays and he has arguably been the second most important pitcher for the Royals this season.
Davis led all MLB relievers with a 1.00 ERA and was second in FIP (1.19) and Wins Above Replacement (3.1). He has been a beast and at one point this season he made 33 straight appearances without allowing a run and only allowing one inherited runner to score.
But Davis' most amazing stat is that he has not done the one thing that kills all relievers. He has not given up a home run all season. At some point in this series, Davis is going be a difference-maker.

Why The Kansas City Royals Are Going To Win The World Series

With teams having played around 80 games, voters have half of the sample size that will determine this year's award winners. 
This has been an unpredictable year in baseball. At 51-30, baseball's best mark, the Pirates seem destined to have their first winning season in 20 years. Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin is 9-0. So is Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz. Detroit Tigers strikeout artist Max Scherzer is 12-0, the first pitcher to be so since Roger Clemens in 1986. 
Scherzer's historic start pales in comparison of teammate Miguel Cabrera's legendary pursuits. The AL leader in batting average and RBI, Cabrera's chase for baseball's first Triple Crown repeat is one of summer's biggest storylines. Think about it, Cabrera is well on his way to doing something no one—not Ted Williams, not Mickey Mantle, not Ty Cobb—could do.
With All-Star break approaching, we submit our votes for baseball's midseason <keyword id="6360366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="awards">awards</keyword>. 
AL Rookie of the Year: Oswaldo Arcia, Minnesota Twins
In a weak class, Arcia stands out. Baseball America's #41 prospect entering the season, he owns a .283/.346/.464 line with six homers and 25 RBI. The 22-year-old started last season in high-A ball and has been torching opposing pitching since. 
NL Rookie of the Year: Jose Fernandez, Miami Marlins

Unlike Puig, the 20-year-old Fernandez started the season in the big leagues, after less than 150 minor league innings. In 16 starts he has 94 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA. His 3.00 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is among the best in the game. While fellow rookie pitcher Shelby Miller has struggled recently, Fernandez has improved with the season, striking out ten and allowing two hits over eight innings against the Padres. Puig is sure to cool from his hellacious start, but even then his race with Fernandez will be exciting.
AL <keyword id="1105396" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cy-Young">Cy Young</keyword>: Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox
It's been nearly a month since Buchholz took the mound, but his impact has still been among the biggest by AL starters this season. The Sox were 11-1 in games Buccholz started, which led to his 9-0 mark before doing down to neck issues. Buchholz and his 1.71 ERA face stiff competition if he cannot return to his early season form. Detroit's combination of Scherzer (12-0, 0.90 WHIP, 10.69 K/9) and Anibal Sanchez (2.06 FIP, 11.13 K/9) are both making surprising runs.
NL Cy Young: Matt Harvey, New York Mets
While not a rookie, Harvey is the best young pitcher in baseball. He has allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 13 of his 17 starts this season, averaging nearly seven innings pitched per start. His 132 strikeouts, 1.99 FIP and 2.00 ERA are all NL-bests. His 0.85 walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP) is the best in baseball.
AL <keyword id="92009" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="MVP">MVP</keyword>: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers

If Davis is able to continue his torrid start and prevent Cabrera's repeat, he deserves consideration. This will be baseball's most compelling race.
NL MVP: Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona Diamondbacks
The NL West is not home to impressive records, but it is the site of a serious MVP race. Goldschmidt is the engine behind the first place D'Backs with his .303/.382/.557 line with 20 homers and 69 RBI. Compare those numbers to Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez's .296/.363/.604 with 22 homers and 60 RBI. Splitting hairs. Gonzalez has 15 steals, Goldschmidt eight. Another contender: Milwaukee's Jean Segura, who asks "Can an MVP play on a last place team?" Segura owns a .325/.358/.503 line with 11 homers and 24 steals.

A Member Of The Royal Family Joins Twitter For The First Time

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5373812169beddfd3311f6ff-1200-924/cc-sabathia-9.jpg" border="0" alt="CC Sabathia" />Getty Images</div></div></div>The Yankees have placed star pitcher CC Sabathia on the disabled list with fluid build up in his knee and now he <a href="http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2014/05/cc_sabathia_to_visit_dr_james_andrews_for_knee_ailment_as_a_precautionary_measure.html">will visit famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews</a> for a second opinion on the pain.
This is just the latest bad news for the Yankees concerning Sabathia and the 6-year, $142 million contract they gave him two years ago.
Sabathia is 33 years old, has a history of knee problems, his fastball has disappeared, and the Yankees still owe him $90.6 million.
Following the 2010 season he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee to repair a small meniscus tear in the same knee that is ailing him now. A year later, Sabathia lost 25 pounds <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/17/sports/baseball/for-yankees-sabathia-it-appears-less-weight-is-less-success.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=1&amp;">to take pressure off his knees</a>. This past off-season, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cc-sabathia-weight-photos-2014-2">Sabathia lost even more weight</a>.
But despite being in better shape, Sabathia's fastball continues to slow down and his performance has suffered in recent years.
As his fastball velocity has fallen, his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP; similar to ERA but a better indicator of how well a pitcher is performing) has gone up.

There are signs that Sabathia may be able to turn it around if he can stay healthy.
Despite losing velocity on his fastball, Sabathia is actually striking out a career-high 9.4 batters per nine innings as he has become more dependent on his slider and changeup.
Also, batters have a .350 batting average off of Sabathia on balls they hit in play (BABIP). That is an unusually high number and suggests that Sabathia has just been a little unlucky early on in the season.
Still, the velocity on his fastball and the recurring knee problems may be things that cannot be fixed. If not, the Yankees have yet another bloated contract that they will soon regret.

In<a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/1971291-apples-ceo-discusses-f1q-2014-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single"> Apple's quarterly phone call with analysts</a>, Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer gave a number of shout-outs to Apple's success with the enterprise.
It's clear that the enterprise area has huge potential, and we're doing well from a percentage of companies that are using iPhone and iPad. It's up to unbelievable numbers. The iPhone is used in 97% of the Fortune 500, and 91% of the Global 500, and iPad is used in 98% of the Fortune 500 and 93% of the Global 500.

And also, as I think was mentioned earlier, 90% of tablet activations in corporations are iPads. And 95% of total app activations were on iOS.
Oppenheimer also outlined a bunch of companies that have "tens of thousands" of employees using iPhones for work, including Accenture, Cisco and American Airlines. Plus, he mentioned two companies, Deloitte and GE, that each have "50,000 iPhones each."
He also named the big iPad customers: British Airways, Kindred Healthcare and the National Football League.
He gave a shout out to reports by market research firm IDC, which said the iPhone held 59% of the U.S. enterprise market (when lumping businesses in with government and education users), and the iPad has a 78% share.
Apple is serious about growing its enterprise presence even more. It has added <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-has-added-a-bunch-of-new-business-friendly-features-to-ios-7-2013-6">new enterprise features to iOS 7</a> and its new <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/enterprises-will-love-mac-mavericks-2013-10">Mac operating system, Mavericks</a>, such as tools that let enterprise write custom apps.
He also noted that iOS 7 has received a security stamp of approval certification from the federal government (the FIPS 140-2 certification). That cert is required by many federal agencies and federal contractors. It's also used by lots of other businesses that view it as validation that the device can be made safe from hackers.
But Cook also warned that enterprise isn't an easy market to win, even though the payoff should be more of these huge contracts, eventually.
I think the road in enterprise is a longer one. ... And I think we've done a lot of the groundwork as you can tell from these numbers that I've given you, and I would expect that it would have more and more payback in the future.
