<ul class="summary-list"><li>Michael Johnston was making six figures in a remote job he enjoyed when his second child was born.</li><li>He fell in love with <keyword id="23944982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="full-time-parenting" source="keywords">full-time parenting</keyword> and his wife, a successful editor, was keen to keep working.</li></ul><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Michael Johnston, 41, a <keyword id="23944981" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="stay-at-home-dad" source="keywords">stay-at-home dad</keyword> who lives in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Johnston's financial claims have been verified with documents. It has been edited for length and clarity.</em><br /><br />I graduated from Boston University in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering. I then got a job in the semiconductor industry. The role allowed me unlimited creative freedom and had crazy big budgets. Life was good.<br /><br />A few years into this amazing job, things shifted. The 2008 recession hit, and though I survived layoffs, everything changed. Money dried up for creative projects, and suddenly, I was doing paperwork all day.<br /><br />After my wife Maddie finished school, we wanted a fresh start. We moved coasts onto a ranch in California. I found a new role at KLA Corporation, in manufacturing, with much less paperwork.<br /><br />When my wife told me she was pregnant, I had a steady job with a manageable workload, but I traveled frequently to China, Taiwan, and South Korea. I was grateful for the income when our son Lincoln was born.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Dad with baby in a carrier." height="4032" width="2268" msid="114981391" hostid="261"></div><h2>The impossible task of pandemic parenting</h2>Like many parents, March 2020 was a very difficult period for my family of three. Lincoln was around three years old, and suddenly my world narrowed to just four walls during lockdown.<br /><br />Instead of traveling and working in the office, my role was being permanently on the phone. I had meetings the entire day and would try to get my actual work done in the evening. Calls from around the world pushed late into the night. At some points, I worked almost 24 hours a day.<br /><br />Maddie, Lincoln, and I tried to maintain daily family life while we kept up with our careers. Now we were both fully remote, so we bought a beach house in Maine in 2020 and left California in 2021. But that wasn't the only reason we were moving back closer to home: our second baby was on the way.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Michael Johnston and his kids." height="3357" width="1888" msid="114981168" hostid="261"></div><h2>Crunching numbers on <keyword id="21017792" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paternity-leave" source="keywords">paternity leave</keyword></h2>I fully intended to go back to work after paternity leave. I was making six figures doing work that I loved — prior to the pandemic shift — and my team was great.<br /><br />But over 12 weeks of leave, I fell in love with being a full-time dad. If I was up at 3 a.m. I was comforting a sleepless kid, not fielding international calls. It was some of the best times we'd had as a family.<br /><br />My wife has a successful career in editorial work, and we began examining whether we could afford to be a one-salary family.<br /><br />We'd spent our early career days digging out of student and credit card debt from moving around. Right before kids, we'd finally paid off our debt, which was tough even with two incomes.<br /><br />Moving back to Maine was a major savings opportunity. We streamlined our spending on our mortgage, rental property, two cars, and everything else it takes to run a family in California. We no longer had to pay for flights back, preschool or daycare.<br /><br />We dug into what life would look like on one income, and my financial projections showed it was doable in Maine.<br /><br />We walk the kids to school and don't have a pricey commute. We no longer pay for any day care — a drastic change from the insanely California options at around $2,000 for one child. Maine also has free breakfast and lunch at school.<br /><br /><h2><b>Deciding to stay home</b></h2>It came down to how we viewed our work. After maternity leave, my wife was excited to see her coworkers and jump back into her job. I saw work as a means to an end. My future wasn't ever really tied up in my workplace.<br /><br />I'd missed so much of my first child's youngest years that I was determined not to repeat that with my second. On the work front, I'd used my degree for 17 years and accomplished what I wanted to.<br /><br />A week or two before the end of my leave, I set my team up for success and gave my boss my two weeks' notice.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Michael Johnston and his family." height="1690" width="2253" msid="114981165" hostid="261"></div><h2>Settling into full-time dad life</h2>The first few months were awesome. We knew we'd made the right choice. I walked the kids to school every day and got to experience small moments I'd previously been too busy to enjoy.<br /><br />I did have misconceptions about stay-at-home parenting life. I thought I'd renovate our 1954 Airstream during naps. Instead, I get up at 5:30 a.m., make lunches, have a cup of coffee for 15 minutes in peace, and then get everyone ready for school.<br /><br />Once my oldest is at school, my new mission is potty training. I'm lucky to grab a shower during naptime. I clean and reset the house for the evening, getting dishes under control and dinner started.<br /><br />My wife and I always split the cores, her taking the mental labor of organizing school and social life comms and I did more physical chores. This is now just more official – I manage school runs and all the household tasks.<br /><br />When others find out I'm a stay-at-home dad, they always ask: "When are you going back to work?"<br /><br />Maybe I will, maybe I won't. If I do, I'll have different boundaries. I spent too long wrapped up in my job.<br /><br />We are trained to graduate, get a good job, work that job forever, then retire at 65. I plowed along for long enough. Now I know a corporate job isn't a mandatory trajectory. It was a choice. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star as a couple dealing with a cancer diagnosis in "We Live in Time."</li><li>BI spoke to director John Crowley about how the film's tone balances romance and melodrama.</li></ul><p>"We Live in Time," the new film starring Florence Pugh and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-garfield-movies-ranked-critics-scores-2022-2">Andrew Garfield</a> as a couple dealing with a cancer diagnosis, defies easy categorization.</p><p>The movie, which is structured as a nonlinear narrative, follows the relationship between Tobias (Garfield), a Weetabix salesman, and Almut (Pugh), a former figure skater turned Michelin chef, over the course of a decade.</p><p>It's funny and romantic, but it's not a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-romantic-comedies-everybody-should-see">rom-com</a>. It's dramatic and heart-wrenching and deals with cancer, but it's not deliberately weepy like "The Fault in Our Stars" or "A Walk to Remember."</p><p>Though the "We Live in Time" director John Crowley saw balancing the film's many tones as an invigorating challenge for him and his actors, some of the suits involved were less enthused.</p><p>"It made our financiers very nervous, certainly, because there's a restlessness about the script," Crowley told Business Insider, adding that it's this tone that gives the movie its "life force."</p><p>"It's constantly refusing to settle down into one kind of thing. And that's why it refuses the guardrails of a rom-com, or of a melodrama."</p><p>Yet with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-garfield-movies-ranked-critics-scores-2022-2">Garfield</a> and Pugh, two beloved and reliably bankable stars at the center of his film, Crowley, who's best known for the Oscar-nominated <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saoirse-ronan-movies-ranked-critics">Saoirse Ronan</a> vehicle "Brooklyn," ultimately had little to worry about.</p><p>Pugh and Garfield's undeniable chemistry both onscreen and on their press tour has garnered the film plenty of buzz: They've discussed everything from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnews.com/article/florence-pugh-andrew-garfield-we-live-time-31556687419d4fb62847332a9a0ab3fe">sending nudes</a> to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.indiewire.com/news/general-news/andrew-garfield-florence-pugh-we-live-in-time-sex-scene-1235054446/">getting carried away</a> filming sex scenes on the record. When Pugh couldn't appear at the London Film Festival because she was shooting another movie, Garfield walked the red carpet with a<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy94nxgwn58o"> life-sized cardboard cutout of her,</a> much to the amusement of fans.</p><p>And then there's the movie's most inadvertent meme: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/bestofpugh/status/1823746606841184481">the carousel horse,</a> whose strange expression captured in the corner of one of the film's promotional photos went viral.</p><p>"It was so good-natured, all of the teasing about it," Crowley said. "For once, all publicity is good publicity. It's not always true nowadays, but I think, in this instance, it was."</p><p>Below, Crowley spoke to BI about the most challenging scenes for Pugh and Garfield to film, how the ending changed, and how much crying there was behind the camera.</p><h2 id="57c752f9-984b-4031-8e46-3a6204a70868">The actors — and director — went through the emotional wringer</h2><div type="image" title="Andrew Garfield in &quot;We Live in Time&quot;" height="5701" width="7601" msid="114633129" hostid="261" sizebytes="3130398"></div><p>When it came to translating that restless script to screen, Crowley praised Garfield and Pugh for "hitting the bullseye on a daily basis." He pointed to the big <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/obgyn-breaks-down-pregnancy-scenes-in-movies-tv-realism-2021-3">birth scene</a>, a key sequence in the film in which Almut ends up delivering their daughter Ella in a gas station bathroom after they get stuck in traffic on New Year's Eve, as one of the most exhausting scenes to film.</p><p>"[Pugh] gave birth eight times in one day," Crowley said. "And those takes ran long. There were sort of 16-minute takes or something like that."</p><p>He also pointed to Almut and Tobias' climactic argument in the kitchen over her decision not to undergo treatment and instead focus on training to compete in a culinary competition as one scene that was "blisteringly raw" and tough for Garfield. The scene was shot toward the end of filming and Garfield, who'd gone through much of Tobias' emotional arc by that point, was left "profoundly upset" after filming it.</p><p>"In a way, he himself could feel Tobias' grief after that scene, which is, she's gone. She's going to do what she wants to do, and I'm left watching it. But she's gone," Crowley recalled. "He could feel that that was the beginning of the end."</p><p>Garfield also lost his mom to cancer in 2019.</p><p>"It really hit him very, very deeply," Crowley added.</p><p>That level of lingering emotion wasn't unique to Garfield, either. Crowley said he, too, got emotional on set watching Garfield and Pugh act out some of the movie's most intense scenes. And he got worked up all over again while editing the movie six months later.</p><p>"There was a lot of emotion flying on that set," he said. "So yeah, I was a wreck."</p><h2 id="45c8e3f3-3d0f-4970-8465-ffadfa947e76">The ending of 'We Live in Time' was originally different</h2><div type="image" title="Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in &quot;We Live in Time&quot;" height="5760" width="7680" msid="114633131" hostid="261" sizebytes="3254102"></div><p>The sequence of scenes in the film, which tells the couple's love story out of order, also changed during the editing process. Scenes initially intended to open and close the film ended up in different spots entirely.</p><p>Crowley said the film originally opened on Tobias and Almut being spun around in the fairground, where they went to celebrate Almut's cancer remission. The original ending bookended that; the last dialogue scene was Almut coming through the door of their apartment and telling Tobias that she was in remission after her first bout of cancer.</p><p>Those scenes both still exist in the final cut of the movie, but were instead placed three-quarters of the way through and happen in chronological order: Almut first reveals her remission and then the two go to the fairground to celebrate.</p><p>The ending that made it to the screen is a beautifully understated sequence: After competing in the Bocuse d'Or culinary competition, a satisfied and fulfilled Almut brings Tobias and their daughter Ella to an ice-skating rink. The family skates together, revisiting Almut's past as a competitive figure-skater — a passion she abandoned over her grief when her own father died.</p><p>That scene ends with Almut skating further away from her partner and daughter and waving to them, functioning as a farewell to Almut for both her family and the audience. The next scene cuts to Tobias and Ella, an unspecified period of time later, entering the family's cottage home. It's never said aloud, but it's clear that Almut has since died.</p><p>Crowley said there was never any plan to show Almut's death onscreen. "It was never filmed," he said. "The ice skating sequence and the waving from across the way was always intended to carry the import of a goodbye."</p><p>To Crowley, that scene was meant to convey for the viewer the sense of sudden finality <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/improving-work-life-helped-deal-with-grief-sisters-death-2024-8">when someone you love dies</a>, which is always abrupt and feels too soon.</p><p>"They wave goodbye at this beautiful triumphant moment and then it's just emptiness. It would feel like, you got to be kidding me, right? She's coming back, of course, which is what you feel when somebody goes," he said.</p><p>He also points to the dog that appears for the first time in the final scene of the film as a subtle clue that Almut has died, calling back to earlier in the film when Almut half-jokingly suggests getting an older dog to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/summer-camp-grief-kids-whove-lost-parent-2024-6">help their daughter cope with the concept of death</a>.</p><p>The egg-cracking moment is another motif brought back in the ending. That happens three times throughout the film: in the opening scene, when we're first introduced to Almut, then early in Tobias and Almut's relationship when she explains to him her method for egg-cracking (always on a flat surface and into a smaller bowl before it's transferred to a larger bowl), and then in the final scene where Tobias and their daughter are using Almut's egg-cracking method after she died.</p><p>It's a quick moment that takes on greater import: a simple, profound way of showing how Almut lives on for her daughter.</p><p>Crowley knew it would be a risk to wrap up the film with what might be perceived as a lack of closure. But whether or not it landed with every viewer, it felt like the most genuine ending for the director — and for his characters.</p><p>"It would be a truer expression of what it feels like to lose somebody very precious to you," he said. "It felt like the right place to leave them to go on that journey."</p><p><em>"We Live in Time" is in theaters now.</em></p>

He'd been courting the opportunity for over a year and was finally escaping a job he felt crushed by. I was relieved and excited to get my happy husband back. Plus, the money would help cover the expenses of our growing family.<br /><br />But I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit apprehensive, too, as his salary would now be three times the $35k I was bringing in. Would the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/husband-jealous-made-more-money-breadwinner-relationship-2024-2">stark difference in our pay</a> change our <keyword id="19903521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="relationship" source="keywords">relationship</keyword>?<br /><br /><h2>The difference in our income had started to grow a few years before</h2>In 2016, we barely scraped by on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/married-couple-combine-finances-improve-marriage-money-2024-3">our combined income</a>, and our <keyword id="21329110" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="wage-gap" source="keywords">wage gap</keyword> was only about 30%. We wanted to pay off our college loans, live comfortably, and start a family. That summer, he got an offer that would help us achieve those goals and jumped at the chance.<br /><br />Our wage gap started to grow. He now made roughly double what I did, but I wasn't concerned at first because it would mean better opportunities for me, too.<br /><br />Five years later, our college debt was paid off, we had started searching for a house, and our son had just had his first birthday. And as my husband accepted his new job offer, our <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/female-breadwinner-supports-husband-stays-home-2024-8" target="_blank">discrepancy in pay</a> grew — he was now making three times as much as I was.<br /><br /><h2>When he went back to work, I was in charge of <keyword id="20826057" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="childcare" source="keywords">childcare</keyword></h2>When my husband started his new job, he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hushed-hybrid-return-to-office-rto-wfh-workplace-explained-how-2024-8">returned to the office</a> for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. For a blissful year and a half, we both worked from home and took care of our little one during the day. Now, childcare from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. would fall solely on me.<br /><br />I worried about whether I'd be able to balance work and caring for our son and wondered if day care would solve the problem, but it didn't take long to realize it wouldn't be financially feasible. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-too-expensive-unaffordable-2024-3">Full-time childcare</a> for our 1-year-old would consume most of my take-home pay. That disappointing knowledge made me want to quit my job, but we couldn't afford that, either. The bills I paid were important, and dropping to one income would put us back into the barely scraping-by category we had fought so hard to get out of.<br /><br />So, I did my best to make it work. On the surface, it seemed like I at least partially had my shit together; my work was always done on time, and my child seemed to be growing and thriving, but inside, I was a mess. I felt like I was letting down my boss or, worse, my child. I never left the house except to visit the grocery store or the doctor. My life was childcare and work.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Amanda Garland and her husband smiling and looking into the camera." height="624" width="832" msid="112968562" hostid="261"></div><h2>I started to attach my worth to how much money I was making</h2>Deep down, I wondered if I was truly only worth a third of what my husband was. The house was always a disaster, I was making deadlines at my job just under the wire, and I worried my split focus was making me a failure as a mother. I felt as though I wasn't doing anything right and didn't deserve my own salary, let alone the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-xer-six-figure-salary-cant-afford-home-student-loans-2024-8">six-figure salary</a> my husband was making.<br /><br />I decided that if I didn't bring monetary value to my marriage, I needed to be a better mother and housekeeper. I tried taking on more chores, more child-rearing, more everything. But each day just felt like a losing battle. The strong, independent woman in me started to lose her voice, crushed by stress, daily duties, and unending self-doubt.<br /><br /><h2>I quit my job and talked to my husband about how I was feeling</h2>One year after my husband started his new job, I quit mine. I was tired of the stress, self-pity, and <keyword id="21406418" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mom-guilt" source="keywords">mom guilt</keyword>. I shifted to working part-time as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/freelance-writer-failed-went-back-full-time-job-2023-5">freelance writer</a>. Though I make nearly the same amount of money, I sacrificed benefits like paid time off and my 401(k) match. Still, freelance work renewed my enthusiasm, and the fact that I could set my own schedule more than made up for the loss of benefits.<br /><br />The most important thing I did leading up to this decision was talk to my husband. I explained why I needed to make the change and how my own insecurity made me feel like I was failing our family. He was horrified to learn that I felt so unsupported and agreed that we should do things differently.<br /><br />We started by putting our little one in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-work-part-time-have-a-career-be-around-kids-2022-5">part-time day care</a> so I could have dedicated days to focus on work. While the cost of two days a week put a strain on our budget, I desperately needed the mental break, and we knew our son would benefit from the socialization. We also agreed that our marriage is just as important as our finances, and we began going on weekly lunch dates to connect with each other.<br /><br />Things aren't perfect. I still worry my husband will resent me for my lagging <keyword id="22661361" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-contribution" source="keywords">financial contribution</keyword>, and there are days when I still beat myself up for not doing enough. But I'm finally able to see my contributions have value beyond the monetary. Sometimes parents don't want to talk about the exact plans yet," he said.</p><p>Asking your parents about their retirement accounts, if they have an estate plan, and what sort of assets they're thinking of passing down are good starting points.</p><p>"Those are just really basic things that can then lead into a larger discussion about the estate plan," Jones added.</p><p>It's much easier to clarify any confusion surrounding assets when the person passing their assets along is still alive, which is why these conversations are important, according to Snow. Inheritors should make sure they understand the values that parents have regarding money, as well as how certain assets should be managed.</p><h2 id="14519a89-2828-4b1a-924f-d01da5b20939"><strong>Not having a long-term plan</strong></h2><p>This is a common mistake when it comes to financial planning in general, but it's especially relevant when a large amount of money is on the line, according to Jones.</p><p>"A lot of inheritors will spend the money, and they'll spend it quickly because they may not have had the best financial habits before the inheritance," Jones said.</p><p>He recommends considering a few basic financial planning questions. Take a look at the type of assets you're inheriting — whether it be brokerage accounts, real estate, or others — and evaluate how these fit into your current financial goals.</p><p>It depends on your personalized financial needs, but Jones recommends considering the following questions: "Do you need to generate income for yourself? Do you have an emergency fund? Do you have debts that you need to pay off?"</p><p>Inheritors who establish concrete financial goals will set themselves up for success. "There's a much higher chance that the inheritance will benefit the inheritor for a long time," Jones said.</p><h2 id="1eee78ff-be04-43de-a777-3edbcdfaf8b3"><strong>Expecting to receive assets immediately</strong></h2><p>When coming up with a financial plan, keep in mind that you won't receive your inheritance immediately, according to Snow.</p><p>Estate administration can be a long legal process. The larger the estate, the longer the wealth transfer process will take, Snow said. It could take several months, or even years, for asset distribution to be completed.</p><p>If estate taxes are due, then the tax return will need to be submitted nine months after the date of death, Snow added.</p><p>The distribution process won't always be smooth. Complications can arise, especially over assets like a house, Jones said. If siblings inherit the family home but can't agree on what to do with the property, it could take a long time to figure out how to pass on the asset in a way that satisfies all the inheritors.</p><h2 id="a6fd722f-adb9-406d-ab55-78010263bfb4"><strong>Not working with an advisor</strong></h2><p>Don't underestimate how complicated estate planning can be. It's often helpful to use the advice of a professional, especially during an emotionally turbulent time.</p><p>It might take a team of legal and financial professionals to ensure the best outcome for your inheritance. Financial advisors, tax specialists, and estate planning attorneys can all offer assistance.</p><p>Experts can help you come up with a long-term strategy for investing an inheritance. In more complicated cases, such as if the person died without a will, you may need to consult a probate lawyer to locate and value the deceased's assets. The laws governing estate taxes can also vary from state to state, so getting an expert opinion can help clarify confusion.</p><p>"Making sure that you're asking lots of questions and relying on your team is a really important part of the process rather than trying to do it yourself because it is pretty complicated," Snow said.</p>

This is a notable slowdown compared to the sharp 39.3 % rise in FY24, which was marked by a post-pandemic push to boost infrastructure and public projects. <br /><br />The capital-to-revenue expenditure ratio, a key indicator of the quality of spending, is also set to decline slightly to 20.7 %in FY25 from 21.2 %in FY24, reflecting a more cautious approach by states.<br /><br />At the same time, revenue expenditure, which covers recurring costs like salaries, subsidies, and interest payments, is expected to grow by 8.9 % to Rs 44.2 lakh crore. This is the slowest growth in the last four years, indicating tighter control over everyday spending. <br /><br />"<keyword id="23614983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="committed-expenditure" source="keywords">Committed expenditure</keyword> (interest payments and pensions), on the other hand, remains high, comprising about 24 % of total revenue expenditure and consuming nearly a quarter of revenue receipts" the report added.<br /><br />Despite this, the report noted that a large portion of revenue expenditure remains committed to non-discretionary costs.
