<keyword id="19940291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali" source="keywords">Diwali</keyword> is just around the corner, and most traders and stockbrokers are gearing up for <keyword id="23618998" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Muhurat-trading" source="keywords">muhurat trading</keyword>, which will take place on Friday, November 1 this year, between 6 and 7 pm. The one-hour trading session will mark the beginning of the new year in the Hindu calendar, or Samvat 2081. Generally, markets don't see much trade or activity during this one-hour session, given that muhurat trading is largely symbolic. It stems from the Indian tradition of closing our annual financial accounts on the day of Diwali and then starting afresh with the upcoming new year. Investors look to make their first profitable transaction of the new year and believe that any new investments during this one-hour window will bring them long-term prosperity. Like with usual trades, settlement happens on a T+1 basis. Gaurav Garg, who heads the markets desk at Lemonn, a new-age <keyword id="20300872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-trading" source="keywords">stock trading</keyword> app, explains that retail investors usually make symbolic purchases of small quantities of stocks or invest in blue-chip stocks or large-cap stocks as part of their portfolio-building strategy during muhurat trading. "Here, it is less about immediate profits and more about its cultural and traditional aspects. The number of trades in this session also tends to be 20–30% lower, compared to a typical trading day, since institutional investors and high-frequency traders stay away from muhurat trading," he adds. <h2>How has the market performed during muhurat trading in the past?</h2>Much like us, the markets also put on a positive, festive outlook during this time. Data suggests that over 10 years, muhurat to muhurat returns, i.e., the performance of <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> or <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> from one Diwali muhurat to that of next year's, has averaged around 11-13%. In fact, in the past decade, the average gain during muhurat trading has been approximately 0.5% to 1% on major indices. Over the last 10 years, 8 out of 10 muhurat sessions have yielded positive returns for investors. In fact, four of these 8 sessions have delivered double-digit returns. Some of these outliers include 2021, i.e., at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where Nifty’s muhurat-to-muhurat returns were a staggering 40.19%. Sensex closely followed suit with 37.65%. 2022 saw the returns from these indices slip into the reds, despite a positive muhurat day performance. The IT sector is also expected to recover as companies adapt to new technologies like generative AI". As markets enter a phase of correction, even IPOs, which have generated wild returns for some investors, may also cool off as investors become wearier. But, for those looking to get in the market in the long haul, experts note that this is a good opportunity to accumulate good-quality stocks. Markets and Muhurat trading: How have Sensex and Nifty celebrated Diwali in the past?

With Indian stock markets touching new highs, people from states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal are participating in share markets actively, highlighted a latest report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The report highlighted that these three states are now leading in terms of the number of investors actively participating in the stock market, after Maharashtra and Gujarat which are traditional base of investors in the country. Maharashtra continues to lead the country in registered stock market investors, with 1.7 crore investors, making up 16.8 per cent of the total investor base, according to the National Stock Exchange. Uttar Pradesh holds the second spot, surpassing 1 crore investors in April and reaching 1.1 crore by August and holds 11.1 per cent of the total investors. Gujarat has figured at third place with 88.5 lakh investors (8.7 per cent), West Bengal with 59 lakh (5.8 per cent), and Rajasthan with 57.8 lakh (5.7 per cent). Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal combined now accounts for almost one out of every four investors in the stock markets. In its report, the NSE stated, "It is also interesting to note that the top five states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal now comprise nearly half (48 pc) of all investors in the country." This data highlights the significant role these states are playing in shaping the overall stock market landscape in India. The report also revealed an emerging trend, the North and East India region is showing the highest growth in <keyword id="22721561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-investor-registrations" source="keywords">new investor registrations</keyword>. Over the past year, these regions have added a substantial number of new investors, further broadening the investor base across the country. Interestingly, the report also noted that states outside the top 10 now make up 27 per cent, up from 23 per cent in FY20. On the Nifty index, he anticipated strong support around the 25,900-26,000 zone, with an upside target at 26,500. <h2>Technical insights</h2>Hrishikesh <keyword id="23343291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yedve" source="keywords">Yedve</keyword>, AVP Technical and Derivatives Research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Intermediates Ltd., shared his technical analysis of the <keyword id="20105832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty-and-bank-nifty" source="keywords">Nifty and Bank Nifty</keyword> indices. He observed that while the Nifty started the day on a flat note and registered a new lifetime high, it eventually faced profit booking and closed marginally lower. "Technically, the index on a daily scale has formed a small red candle, but on the weekly scale, it has formed a big green candle," Yedve explained. He added that as long as Nifty holds above the 26,000 level, a "buy on dips" strategy should be followed, with an immediate short-term target of 26,500. On the Bank Nifty front, Yedve pointed out that the index started on a weak note and remained under pressure throughout the day, closing at 53,834. He highlighted the formation of a bearish Marubozo candle on the daily chart, which signals potential short-term weakness. However, on the weekly scale, Bank Nifty remains above the breakout point of a rounding bottom pattern, indicating strength. "In the short term, Bank Nifty may witness consolidation or profit taking, but any dip around 53,350-53,400 will offer fresh buying opportunities," Yedve advised. <h2>Market wrap-up and outlook</h2>Reflecting on the week’s performance, <keyword id="23343292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amol-athawale" source="keywords">Amol Athawale</keyword>, VP-Technical Research at Kotak Securities, noted that the benchmark indices had maintained positive momentum, with the Nifty ending 1.5% higher and the Sensex gaining over 1,030 points. <keyword id="20102108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="metal" source="keywords">Metal</keyword> and auto stocks were the standout performers, with the Metal index rising by 7% and the Auto index by 4.5%. Athawale highlighted the importance of the Nifty and Sensex breaching key resistance levels of 26,000/85,000 last week, which has provided a boost to market sentiment. Technically, Athawale pointed to the formation of a bullish candle on the weekly charts and an uptrend continuation pattern on the daily and intraday charts, signalling a potential continuation of the rally. However, he cautioned that "buying on dips and selling on rallies would be the ideal strategy for short-term traders." He identified 26,100/85,300 as crucial support zones for the Nifty and Sensex, with resistance expected around 26,400-26,500/85,900-86,300. As for Bank Nifty, Athawale described the medium-term outlook as bullish but noted that overbought conditions could lead to range-bound activity in the near term. The term broadly refers to loans made to companies and consumers by nonbank lenders. Historically, fund managers have sold "alternative assets" like private debt to institutional investors at a high cost, generating returns of around 10% in recent years — more than they would have seen from investing in the stock or bond markets.Now, as those institutions slow allocations to private credit, the biggest players in the space want to target a new class of investors. According to the Journal, firms like State Street, Apollo Global Management, and BlackRock are working to roll out private credit ETFs to regular investors. The challenge, though, is building a highly liquid ETF out of illiquid private loans. That hurdle is also what will likely draw the eye of regulators as they ensure the ETFs are appropriate for retail investors. But if these ETFs get approved, they will enable regular investors to tap into a booming market, one that BlackRock expects will more than double to $3.5 trillion by 2028. While Sensex inched up over 690 points to close at 79,476.63 points, Nifty closed the day over the 24k mark, at 24,213.30, up by 217 points. During the day, Sensex had soared 740.89 points, or 0.94%, to touch 79,523.13 points. From the 30-share Sensex pack, JSW Steel surged nearly 5% while Tata Steel jumped nearly 4%. Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and UltraTech Cement were also among the big gainers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Lupin, Britannia, and Infosys were among the major laggards on Sensex. On Nifty, where 39 stocks advanced during the day and the remaining 11 saw declines, Tata Steel, Hindalco, and JSW Steel were among the top gainers. SEBI's investigation revealed a pattern of <keyword id="20803556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-misconduct" source="keywords">financial misconduct</keyword> orchestrated by Anil Amband his associates. The regulatory body found that funds were being diverted under the pretext of loans to entities linked to Anil Ambani, leading to severe breaches of financial regulations. SEBI investigation highlighted that Anil Ambani's role as the 'chairperson of the ADA group' was pivotal in facilitating the fraudulent activities. The order by SEBI stated that many of the borrowers failed to repay their loans, which in turn caused RHFL to default on its debt obligations. The IPO (initial public offer) of food and grocery delivery behemoth Swiggy is set to open tomorrow and conclude on November 8, 2024. The entire issue is worth Rs 11,327.43 crore and has a fresh issue component of Rs 4,499 crore and an OFS (offer for sale) of about Rs 6,828.43 crore. With a price band of Rs 371-390, retail investors will be required to invest a minimum of Rs 14,820 to get their hands on Swiggy's shares. Swiggy, which will tentatively list on the bourses on November 13, 2024, is seeking to raise Rs 1,952.43 crore more than its rival <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, which went public in July 2021 and was looking to raise Rs 9,375 crore. Zomato's offer was oversubscribed around 38.25 times, with retail investors subscribing 7.45x to the issue. Notably, only around 15% of Swiggy's total issue will be made available to retail investors. Moreover, Swiggy's IPO is not garnering the same buzz if its present GMP (<keyword id="938640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grey-market-premium" source="Orion">grey market premium</keyword>) trends are to be believed. The company's last traded GMP was Rs 7, taking its estimated listing price to Rs 397 (upper end of its price band, i.e., Rs 390 + Rs 7), and its potential listing gains per share at a minimal 1.79%. Last week, Swiggy's GMP was at Rs 25, before tumbling to Rs 18, and then momentarily stabilizing at Rs 22 before its steep fall to present levels of Rs 7. <h2>Strengths and weaknesses</h2> Since its inception in 2014, Swiggy's bottom line has been in red, unlike that of its rival Zomato, which turned profitable in the first quarter of FY24. In FY22, its total income was Rs. 6119.78 crore with a net loss of Rs. 3628.90 crore. While the company's total income increased to Rs. 8714.45 crore in FY23, it also spelled a corresponding rise in its net losses, which surged to Rs. 4179.31 crore. The trend varied a little in FY24 when Swiggy's total income rose to Rs 11,634.35 crore while its net loss reduced to Rs. 2,350.24 crore. However, in the first quarter of FY25, ending June 30, 2024, the company's total income stood at Rs 3,310.11 crore and a net loss of Rs. 611.01 crore. While Swiggy did achieve 42.4% revenue growth between FY2022-223, most of its revenue is sourced from the top 50 of the 500 Indian cities it is currently operational in. Even in this regard, Zomato, which operates in around 1,000 cities across India, has an edge. <h2>Some say invest, some say avoid</h2> Some experts are advising against subscribing to this IPO. Per SAMCO Securities, "As of FY 2024, Swiggy Limited continues to operate at a loss, in contrast to its competitor, Zomato Limited, which has recently achieved profitability. Given Swiggy’s current financial position, competitive pressures, associated risks, and valuation, its IPO appears overvalued. Therefore, investors should avoid this IPO until the company’s financial performance and growth outlook improve. Waiting until Swiggy demonstrates improved financial results and a clearer path to sustainable growth would be a more prudent investment approach. Per Bajaj Broking's IPO note, Swiggy's IPO can be subscribed to from a long-term perspective. However, it also highlights that Swiggy's offer document is missing PAT (profit after tax) and RoCE (returns on capital employed) data. "For the last three fiscals, the company has reported an average EPS of Rs - (14.90) and an average RoNW of - (35.39%). The issue is priced at a P/BV of 11.60 based on its NAV of Rs. 33.61 as of June 30, 2024, and is at a P/BV of 7.31 based on its post-IPO NAV of Rs. 53.36 per share (at upper cap). If we attribute annualized FY25 earnings to a post-IPO fully diluted equity base, then the asking price is at a negative P/E, and based on FY24 earnings also, it is at a negative P/E, as the company has posted losses for those periods. On other parameters, the issue appears aggressively priced," it further adds. Gaurav Garg, research analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, notes that it might take some time for Swiggy to reach Zomato's level, both in terms of valuation and AOV (average order value). Swiggy's valuation has been pegged at about Rs 95,000 crore, at the upper price band, while Zomato has a market valuation of Rs 2.13 lakh crore. "Almost 50% valuation compared to Zomato gives some comfort, although it should not be considered an arbitrage in valuation. If Swiggy’s EBITDA catches up to 3-4% in the food delivery business, which is currently at 1%, and Average Order Value (AOV) improves to Rs. 550-600 levels in quick commerce with a higher non-grocery share, we can see bridging in the valuation gap. However, this should not be expected in the near term," he adds.
