<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnbBooVbk-c">YouTube/WeAreCSW</a></div></div>It's traditional on most <keyword id="6360288" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="college">college</keyword> campuses to devote the last few weeks of the semester to <keyword id="417975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="final-exams">final exams</keyword> - cumulative tests that make sure a student has absorbed everything taught over the past few months.
However, there are people - other than students subjected to days and weeks of studying - who believe that finals can be better, both as a means of assessment and something more in keeping with the broader aims of academia. 
Here are three ways for schools to improve final exams:
Switch Up The Format
Something that's been trending in academia for a while is a move away from traditional blue book multi-hour final exams. <a href="http://janisthiessen.ca/2013/01/09/why-i-dont-give-exams/">University of Winnipeg history professor Janis Thiessen</a> writes, "alternatives to traditional paper-and-pencil testing should not be considered 'alternatives' but as central methods of assessing students."
Additionally, the UC Berkeley website cites a book on classroom assessment techniques that <a href="http://teaching.berkeley.edu/course-level-learning">notes testing should be "context-specific,"</a> and "?the ?assessment ?technique ?is ?chosen ?to ?fit ?the ?subject ?matter ?and ?the? needs ?of ?the ?particular ?class."
The Berkeley website offers up some <a href="http://teaching.berkeley.edu/alternatives-final-exams">ways for teachers to move past traditional testing methods</a>, including some more practical ideas - like creating peer reviewed posters or sending in an Op-Ed to a local newspaper - that give students real world experience.
Stop Encouraging Students To Study
This one might be a little more theoretical, but some educators believe that it's counterintuitive to ask students to study for final exams. As <a href="http://chronicle.com/article/Stop-Telling-Students-to-Study/131622/">University of North Florida professor David Jaffe</a> notes, "this simple and familiar phrase-'study for exams'- ... actually encourages student behaviors and dispositions that work against the larger purpose of human intellectual development and learning."
According to Jaffe, final exams are the worst offenders. 
"This collective exercise in sadism encourages students to cram everything that they think they need to 'know' (temporarily for the exam) into their brains, deprive themselves of sleep and leisure activities, complete (or more likely finally start) term papers, and memorize mounds of information," he writes in the Chronicle of Higher <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">Education</keyword>.
Chicago high school teacher Ray Salazar <a href="http://www.chicagonow.com/white-rhino/2013/10/final-exams-in-high-school-unnecessary/">offers a more practical take on finals' failings</a>. "By the time students find out if they were wrong or right, it doesn't matter! Grades are in. Report cards are printed. Students have moved on," Salazar writes in ChicagoNow.
Bring Adorable Animals To Campus

"<a href="http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/2013/12/09/worried-about-finals-therapy-dogs-to-the-rescue/">Studies show that interaction with animals lowers blood pressure</a>, reduces anxiety, improves physical and mental health and gives a feeling of well-being," according to UC Berkeley.
"<a href="http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/education/story/2012-05-13/dogs-stress-relief-on-campus/54921444/1">You can release some of the emotions to a pet that you can't to a human</a>. A pet keeps it confidential. You don't have to worry about someone else saying, 'Oh, I think she's having a nervous breakdown over the science exam," a researcher at Harvard told the Associated Press.
While most of the animals that come for finals are dogs, Cornell Law School has made a semi-tradition of bringing in a llama to help students de-stress.

Three Ways That Schools Can Improve Final Exams

Bengaluru, Bowing to the vociferous demand from anxious students, the Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) has postponed its final semester exams from September 21 owing to the grim Covid situation in the state, an official said on Thursday. "The semester exams for law courses have been postponed from September 21 and intermediate exams from October 5 as sought by the students in view of the pandemic still persisting across the state, a KSLU official from Hubballi in the state's northwest region told IANS. The decision to postpone the exams was taken after consultations with State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J.C. Madhuswsamy here on Wednesday. "Final year exams, however, will be conducted online in October, as directed by the Bar Council of India," said the official. The university will commence regular classes online from September 1 to make up for the time lost as colleges remained shut since April under the Covid-induced lockdown restrictions. The semester and intermediate exams will be held only after classes resume regularly for 45 days to two months. "Though the students will be temporarily promoted to the next semester based on their performance in the internal exams held till March, but they have to take the exams when they are held in the near future," asserted the official. The state higher education department had earlier decided to promote the under-graduate and post-graduate students to the next semester, as classes could not be resumed due to the extended lockdown and Covid crisis. Hundreds of students of the law colleges across the state expressed relief over the university postponing the exams, as many of them from outside the state and rural areas had been staying back at home as educational institutes continued to remain shut in this academic year. Karnataka State Law University exams postponed — will now be conducted online in October

In response, US prosecutors pointed to text messages recovered from a phone that Secor destroyed after breaching the Capitol.In the texts, it appears that Secor texted an unknown number, asking if they wanted to "hang out" and discuss "future operations." A young Capitol rioter asked to be released from jail so he can take his final exams at UCLA

Penn State University located in State College, Pennsylvania is notorious for their seemingly bottomless pitcher of school spirit. 
After all, students at the University are even tailgating their final exams. Complete with hot dogs and encouraging signs.

Stephen Pianovich, pictured above, is graduating this May and masterminded the plan to tailgate a final.
It was on his senior year bucket list.
In an email to Business Insider, he said:
We got some confused looks from people walking and driving by, but nobody from the university or police told us we needed to stop. I guess I should have mentioned that this was a sober event. I think people see the word "tailgate" and think of boozing, but we didn't want to give anyone a reason to kick us off campus, so we made sure there was no alcohol there. 
The crowd varied from about 20-30 people, so it wasn't too much of a ruckus, but enough to let people know we were tailgating a final. We cheered loudly again when [our friends] Ryan and Shane exited the exam and took a group picture. 
I graduate this weekend and all semester my friends and I have been trying to do unique and fun things, and this was just another example of that. Is it going to become a Penn State tradition down the road? I certainly wouldn't mind seeing that, but who knows? I do know, however, that we made some memories and I'm overjoyed we went through with it.

Penn State Students Are Tailgating Their Final Exams

Forget crying "the dog ate my homework." Students tried something much more creative to get out of taking their final exam.
The latest trend - bartering retweets on Twitter in exchange for a canceled test - is currently sparking up at schools all over the country, but the latest update on this fun story has left students "bummed;" teachers aren't holding up their end of the deal.
Here's what's going on:
ABC News reports Texas high school senior Andrew Muennink <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/high-school-students-skip-final-15000-retweets/story?id=23645979" target="_hplink">struck a deal with his art teacher that would allow his class to get out of a final exam</a>.

If the tweet above got 15,000 retweets (a retweet is when other people take your tweet and repost it into their own Twitter feeds), she'd throw the exam. 
15,000 retweets is a seemingly impossible number to reach for the average Twitter user, so the teacher likely thought she had made a safe bet when she gave the Round Rock High School senior until May 23 at 12 p.m. to complete his challenge.

But with tons of media attention, the tweet currently has over 15,000 retweets well before cut off date.
So no final exam? Not quite.
"Students of Round Rock High School in Texas will be taking exams no matter how many retweets any student receives," said Round Rock Independent School District Spokeswoman JoyLynn Occhiuzzi in an official statement. 
Occhiuzzi went on to tell ABC News that the teacher and student maintain they were both joking from the beginning, but <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/high-school-students-skip-final-15000-retweets/story?id=23645979">Muennink says he's "bummed" he still has to show up for his art final.</a>
Other students are trying their hand at this deal, some with lots of success on Twitter. None of them have confirmed that their exams will actually be cancelled:

"They all tie into the classroom discussion."The Trump question wasn't the only instance of controversial exam material. Another question asked what to do during an opening statement in a courtroom. Answer choices included "find the hottest person on the Jury and focus your words on them" and "treat them like the MORONS they are," according to <a href="http://postonpolitics.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2016/05/19/read-the-donald-trump-exam-question-that-got-a-florida-teacher-suspended/">Palm Beach Post columnist Kristina Webb</a>. Before administering his final exam, Leigh had already launched a lawsuit against the school, <a href="http://www.mypalmbeachpost.com/news/news/local-education/suit-pb-lakes-principal-kicking-out-30-teachers-af/nrMnR/?ref=cbTopWidget">Sonja Isger of the Palm Beach Post reported</a>. The suit alleges that the school did not renew his and about 30 other teachers' contracts in retaliation for a perceived lack of loyalty to administers.
