Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million. While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month. But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise </h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively.

FII stake in Indian equities dips to a 12-year low

<ul><li>Ten years ago markets were completely driven by FPIs but today the situation has changed, says <keyword id="5500681" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="v-s-sundaresan" source="Orion">V S Sundaresan</keyword>, executive director at SEBI. </li><li>The SEBI director believes that <keyword id="6416579" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="Orion">retail investors</keyword> are confident in Indian markets and enough to hold the markets strong despite <keyword id="16607640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fii-exits" source="Orion">FII exits</keyword>. </li><li>Lack of investor awareness, regulatory overreach and litigant mindset are weaknesses in our markets, said the SEBI official. </li></ul>A sell off by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) no longer impacts Indian equity markets like it used to a decade ago, said V S Sundaresan, executive director at Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He says that retail participation has become more important in the home market. “Ten years back, markets were completely driven by FPIs but today the situation has changed. Nobody is bothered if FPIs are putting or pulling money. It does not affect the market in any way and they are only now for headlines,” said Sundaresan at 14th Capital Market Summit on Wednesday. FII exits have been making headlines especially since December last year, while impacting markets and inducing volatility. In January, FIIs sold Indian equities worth ₹41,464 crore and in February, so far, they have sold ₹1,041 crore equities. As a result, Sensex has dropped over 2%, and Indian markets have been underperforming compared to others in China and Hong Kong. Retail participation balances flows in the home markets The SEBI director believes that retail investors are confident in Indian markets, and that’s enough to hold the markets strong despite FII exits. “Participation by retail investors has given fillip to this market that can do with or without FPIs. We should be proud of this. This clearly shows there is a good progressing capital formation. This is definitely proving that the savings potential of India is being channeled into capital markets. Capital markets are having enough support from non-FPIs so that markets are balanced,” added Sundaresan. He added that Indian markets are stable with considerably lower volatility compared to other markets. “Despite economic slowdown, increasing interest rates, we have a resilient market,” he said. He added that there is a lack of investor awareness, as new investors are incurring hefty losses in derivatives markets. “Data shows that 9 out of 10 are losing money in options in F&amp;O markets as everybody thinks they can play in options markets. There is a lot of scope for investor education,” said Sundaresan. Regulatory overreach, rising litigations are market weaknesses Lack of investor awareness, regulatory overreach and litigant mindset are weaknesses in our markets, said the SEBI official. The cost of compliance has increased substantially with non-compliances leading to a rise in the number of litigations. For which, he says there is a need to increase self governance. He cited the example of the government’s AGR (adjusted gross revenue) based revenue sharing model with the telecom players wherein the companies are unable to pay the dues, which eventually increases government’s stake. Instead of litigations he said there should be self corrective measures wherein disputes can go for settlements instead of choosing legal battles, which only leads to waste of money, time and resources.

Sell off by FIIs does not impact markets; retail participation is more important, says SEBI executive director

This comes at a time when the Nifty 50 index has gained nearly 20% since April. “Part of the reason FIIs are selling is because valuations are not cheap and the inflation risk is real in India while Growth has been resilient and given the short-term pressure on inflation, RBI may continue to hold interest rates unchanged in Q3 FY 2025. Based on inflation moderating below 4.5% and course of geo-political concerns, the RBI may undertake a rate cut decision in Q4 FY 2025". So, what does this mean for your investments? "We have already seen some of this already, with 10Y GOI yields at around 6.75%, having already eased significantly in last few months. Investors having a long term investment horizon and appropriate risk appetite can also invest in gilt funds", he continues. <h2>Dont exit the markets yet </h2>Though short-term biases of FII may continue towards Chinese markets keeping pressure on the equity markets, the resilient domestic flows can defy deep corrections in the equity markets despite high valuations. The markets may trend positive with subsequent rate cuts by the US Fed later this year. Hence, it wont be advisable to completely exit the equity markets during these times, notes Avnish Jain, Head - Fixed Income, Canara Robeco Mutual Fund Jain advises to take a buy on dips approach towards the stock markets i.e. adding quality stocks to your portfolio during times of market downturn. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities says that the current market texture is volatile, hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy for the day traders. "For the bulls now, 25,050/81,700 would be the key level to watch out. Above the same market could retest the level of 25,200-25,225/82,000-82,300. On the flip side, 24,900/81,200 would be the key support zone for the traders. Below the same, the selling pressure is likely to accelerate. Below the same, market could slip till 24,800-24,780/81,000-80,700", explains Chouhan. <h2>Time to buy a home? Maybe! </h2>No rate cut can spell some good news for homebuyers who are looking to get their hands on real estate during the festive season. Even as home loan rates remain steady as of now, homebuyers may have to wait until December or beyond to get any tangible relief in their home loan EMIs. Vimal Nadar, Head of Research, Colliers India explains that a change in stance from “withdrawal of accommodation” to “neutral” indicates its clear direction for a possible reduction in interest rates in the foreseeable future. This ongoing stability in repo rate should provide a significant thrust to residential real estate during these festive months as home loan interest rates are likely to remain steady. "Typically, Q4, marked by higher inclination of homebuyers to wrap-up property purchases during the auspicious period combined with instantaneous liquidity benefit aided by developers offering attractive discounts, has historically provided the final push to housing sales across the major markets in the country", he added.

Moreover, Israel and US are bracing for a significant escalation after Iran and Hamas pledged to retaliate against Israel for killings last week of a Hamas Leader, traders said. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex rebounded 903.63 points, or 1.15 per cent, to 79,663.03 points, while the Nifty increased by 270.50 points, or 1.12 per cent, to 24,326.10 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Monday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 10,073.75 crore, according to exchange data.
