My last working day was December 31, 2021,” Bhargava wrote on his LinkedIn page, appealing for his privacy. It’s not clear what triggered Bhargava’s resignation, but this comes after the Indian government ordered the company to refund all pre-orders until it receives a licence to operate in the country. Bhargava joined Starlink in October. But here’s the kicker – Starlink’s user terminal, which is required to connect to the company’s satellites, costs $499 each (approx. ₹37,000). This is on top of the $99 a month (approx. ₹7,400) subscription charge, which is extremely expensive no matter what plan you consider, especially for a country like India. Starlink’s recorded top speed is a little over 200Mbps, according to a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Starlink/comments/i9w09n/list_of_confirmed_starlink_speed_tests/">list</a> of test results recorded so far. For context, 200Mbps plans from popular broadband providers like <keyword id="3690255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiofiber" source="Orion">JioFiber</keyword>, <keyword id="2730108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="act-fibernet" source="Orion">ACT Fibernet</keyword> and <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> start at ₹999 per month. These providers also offer 1Gbps plans starting at ₹3,999 per month, which is still considerably lower than Starlink’s subscription plan. Admittedly, satellite internet is fundamentally different from wired broadband, but the massive price difference, combined with the widespread availability of 4G services across the country, might have made Starlink a non-starter for most Indian users. Bhargava’s goal of 2 lakh connections in India by the end of 2022 might have been too far-fetched to begin with, especially without any tweaks in the prices of the $499 kit or the $99 a month plan. You can recharge with multiple data vouchers at once and they will be queued in your account. Once the first voucher gets expired, the second voucher will be activated. The company has revised the data vouchers due to the Coronavirus outbreak as people are stuck at homes and may use more data than usual. But, at the same time, there are options available to users looking for higher monthly data limits — provided they shell out the extra money. ACT Fibernet's 100 mbps plan is 37% more expensive than Jio Fiber, but it also offers 25% more data per month. Spectra, an internet service provider operating mostly in Delhi, is nearly twice as expensive but puts no limits on how much data a user can consume in a month. But, as speeds get faster the disparity between Jio and its competitors starts to decrease. The only difference is that Jio Fiber has set its data limit at 2,500 GB, where Airtel claims its placing no such restriction on consumption. ACT Fibernet, even ₹2,000 more expensive than Jio Fiber, is offering at extra 1,000 GB per month to its users. The increase in cost isn't proportional to the extra data but could make sense for users that have higher consumption requirements. Spectra's pricing of its 1 gbps plan goes in the other direction. It only offers 500 GB per month but it's also less than half the price of Jio Fiber's Platinum plan at ₹1,549. Jio Fiber Plans: Here's how Reliance Jio's broadband fiber plans fare against other companies

The new plan will not only help users who are stuck at home due to Coronavirus but may also help BSNL in getting new users and converting some landline users to broadband users. Also this new plan could be a direct challenge to market leader Reliance Jio’s latest request to set a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/jio-opposes-bsnl-mtnl-suggestion-for-floor-price-exemption/articleshow/74679920.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">base tariff</a> and cut down free offers and data. However, BSNL requested the government to exempt it from a floor price plan as it has less than 15% market share. As part of the Word@Home plan, BSNL is offering 10 Mbps download speeds with a daily cap of 5GB data to all its landline users across circles. Once the user exhausts the 5GB per day limit, the speed will come down from 10 Mbps to 1 Mbps. While the speed and data limits are not high, the plan is being given our free of charge. The offer is available only for its landline users. BSNL is not charging any installation fee or security deposit for the plan. However, users may have to pay for the landline as the calling benefit will be available as per their existing plan. At the moment, the free plan will be available for one month from the date of activation. BSNL is not the only one to offer a plan for the lockdown period. With covid-19 pandemic resulting in a seven-month shutdown of movie theatres, several producers have taken their films directly to digital platforms which has seen OTT platforms gaining at the expense of cinemas. In 2018, SVoD revenues were a third of India’s total box office revenue but the shift of eyeballs to digital platforms in the medium to long term will ensure India’s movie box office falls by 2.6% over the next four years as SVoD grows by 30.7%. Using technology to gain competitive edge Content is one of the most important factors that makes people subscribe to a streaming video service, but another equally important factor is the ease of use. This is where technology comes into play. Deloitte in its recent <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/insights/industry/technology/digital-media-trends-consumption-habits-survey.html">digital trends survey</a> found that streaming during Covid-19 compared to the pre-pandemic market is not so much ‘before and after’ as it is ‘before and faster’. People are signing up for services quickly and are leaving services even faster. With almost every streaming service offering free trials, consumers are lapping up the trials. However, the real test in retention will come down to technology. Streaming providers have to create a seamless experience for content viewing, and it starts with content discovery. Leaders in this market should look to invest more in technology by offering a great search experience. This means not only making it fast, but also very personalized. Providers will have to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to understand the consumer’s intent and offer the right content at the right time. Streaming Content and Censorship With so much content being produced and added to streaming platforms every day, there has been a growing issue about content censorship across the world. Platforms such as Netflix and Amazon, among others, are receiving <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_in/article/a35jna/netflix-and-amazon-may-have-to-censor-explicit-content-in-india-soon">content removal notices</a> from various governments and authorities. Recently, the debate about regulation and censorship is heating up in India. Patal Lok on Netflix in India has been surrounded by controversy because of violence, sexual content and portrayal of the hypocrisy of upper caste men. Rasbhari too has created a furore because of its sexual content. While currently there is no censorship of OTT platforms, this is likely to change in the future. The Information and Broadcast Ministry of India is proposing that OTT platforms fall under its purview so that they can be regulated just as other media such as TV, radio, films, etc.4 The Future Path Innovation in storyline is the key factor that is fuelling the growth of OTT platforms, and it is currently free from any regulation or censorship before it hits your favourite device. Censorship kills creativity, and this can be easily seen by how good the content of new streaming shows is versus content released in theatres. Streaming content should ideally follow the food industry model, meaning series/ movies should have full disclosures about its contents and allow the consumer to decide if they want to purchase or watch it. Currently, all major <keyword id="10213289" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="streaming-players">streaming players</keyword> are following their own standards. What we need is a regulatory body that standardizes these disclosures and uses technology to audit for compliance, without censoring any content. Here again, artificial intelligence and machine learning could play a big role in automatically classifying the content and generating full disclosures. The next decade in streaming will be very exciting and also very challenging. Winners will not only be decided by who has the best content but also who has the most advanced technology to make the service more intelligent and super easy to use. Ultimately, the streaming wars will empower consumers and revolutionize how they consume media.

Undercutting most of the competition, Jio Fiber’s promised monthly plans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jiofibers-plans-look-cheaper-but-airtel-is-giving-you-more-data/articleshow/70997713.cms">starting at</a> ₹700 per month and a minimum speed of 100 MBPS. At half the price, the company's introduced a new top-up that only costs ₹350 per month and offers 50GB at speeds of 10MBPS, which will cut to 1MBPS after fair usage policy (FUP). Similarly, when Jio entered the market back in 2016, data became <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/indias-mobile-tariffs-arent-the-cheapest-in-the-world-anymore/articleshow/72342660.cms">cheaper than ever before</a>. But, it was not without its pitfalls. The move also pushed out most of the competition in the market. And now, major players in the market — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea — are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/reliance-jio-airtel-and-vodafone-idea-may-raise-tariff-soon/articleshow/71757089.cms">fighting to recover losses</a> as their debt continues to rise. With the way Jio Fiber’s pricing its products so far — it looks like there might be another price war on the horizon. The makings of a price war When data prices on mobile fell, it brought more people online. But, after three years of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-telecom-war-escalates-telecom-industry-debt-to-3-9-lakh-crore/articleshow/70906000.cms">racking up debt</a>, telecom operators are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/telcos-revenue-rising-but-accumulated-debt-eating-into-it-moodys/articleshow/72271809.cms">hiking their prices back up</a> by as much as 40%. They have also asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to set up a floor price for data services in order to regulate tariffs because the price war has gotten so intense that no operator will voluntarily correct their prices. Meanwhile, smaller players that couldn’t survive the competition were either shut down or acquired by one of the major players. No new company could enter the market since it was unviable to offer the same prices as the telco giants. Now, Jio’s employing the same strategy to the broadband sector. “We expect the competitive intensity to rise as incentives including free content, could increase, especially from, to achieve the targeted customer base,” according to Elara Capital. Small local players, like YouBroadband and ACT Fibernet, could be forced out of the market as Jio’s squeezes on margins. Larger players, like Vodafone Idea and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jiofibers-plans-look-cheaper-but-airtel-is-giving-you-more-data/articleshow/70997713.cms">Bharti Airtel</a>, will have to defend their market share while also trying to grow. And government players, which include BSNL and MTNL, will struggle with their already troubled profits. “While telecom firm’s contemplating mobile tariff hike was encouraging, the price seems to be shifting to FTTH [Fiber To The Home] market and could pressure margin,” stated Elara Capital’s report. The telecom sector’s price war had Jio in the lead within a short span of time, not just in terms of users, but also in terms of revenue market share. And, the same seems to be set to happen in the broadband sector — again. Others believe Jio Fiber’s broadband won’t be disruptive asserting that other operators offer higher value on a per GB basis.
