Incidentally, RedSeer came remarkably close in predicting this figure with its forecast of $9.6 Bn for this year’s GMV falling within just a ~5% range of the actual figure ($9.2 Bn). As has been the case for the last five years or so, online Festive Sales in India continued to grow at a blistering pace and saw a 23% YoY growth in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). A slew of new launches and easy financing options meant that Mobiles continued to remain the most widely-sold product category during this time, accounting for more than a third of the total GMV. With hoards of people finally getting to leave their homes after months of lockdown, the Fashion category witnessed a resurgence like never before. Driven by consumers’ desire to refresh their wardrobes and new innovative business models catering to shoppers in Tier 2 cities, the sales of Fashion items via online channels doubled this year. On the other hand, the categories that witnessed subdued growth this year included the likes of Home furnishings, Home Décor, Furnishings and Other Electronics. The overall online shopper base grew by ~25% compared to last year with 57% of the total shoppers coming from Tier 2+ cities. This meant that this year’s Festive Sales were dictated by affordability schemes. While the overall online GMV and absolute number of shoppers both increased, the GMV per user declined from INR 6,570 to INR 6,490 as relatively less expensive items such as Fashion products saw an increase in their share of the overall GMV. The Flipkart Group emerged as the leader during the festive sales with an impressive 62% market share. Rising consumer demand certainly contributed to the growth of overall GMV during the online Festive Sales. However, eCommerce platforms also deserve credit for the steps they took to further boost this demand. Strategies to boost demand included: <ol> <li>High pre-sales marketing and campaigns including a “curtain-raiser event” to reveal sale prices and “pre-book” items at discounted prices.</li> <li>Enabling affordability through banking partnerships and seller-driven discounts on aspirational brands to bring the most competitive price to customers.</li> <li>Warehouse and demand planning to fulfil orders to the customers much quicker.</li> </ol>

Indicating a strong revival in consumer spending habits, 62% of them said they have planned to increase the festive budget compared to last year. The consumer survey was conducted to understand consumer shopping habits and preferences for the ongoing <keyword id="36208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season" source="Orion">festive season</keyword>. The pan-India survey saw participation from 3,800 respondents, the majority of them being millennials. Smartphones, electronics, and fashion have emerged as the top categories where people planned to splurge in the coming months. A whopping 72% choose smartphones and consumer electronics as their preferred choice to shop. Home decor, jewelry, automobiles, personal care products are the other popular categories. The Indian festive season is a crucial time as consumer demand is at its peak with many planning several small and big-ticket purchases. With increased vaccination and the general opening of the economy, the survey has witnessed a positive sentiment around budgets and shopping at physical stores. 75% of the surveyed respondents said they were more comfortable shopping at physical stores than last year. While online shopping continues to be popular among people, 53% said they would shop at both online and offline stores for their needs this year. Indicating an increase in discretionary spending and budgets, 67% of people say they plan to spend on gifting family and friends. It is interesting to note that 59% of them revealed that they plan to use Buy Now, Pay Later/EMI options for their shopping needs. UPI, Credit Cards, and cash payments were other popular options. Affordability solutions continue to play a crucial role in these times as people look at ways to plan their finances better. The Festive Shopping Outlook Report 2021 has been put together against the background of the pandemic, even as the Indian retail sector continues to witness radical changes when it comes to consumer behavior and buying patterns. The survey, conducted between September 15, 2021 to October 20, 2021 amongst 800 metro and non-metro Indian shoppers, reveals changing consumer shopping preferences heading into the <keyword id="36208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season" source="Orion">festive season</keyword>. These trends will ultimately determine the course that the Indian retail sector will follow, by elevating consumer strategies and aligning themselves to the new order. These benefits, combined with the emotional pull that consumers feel towards extending support and encouragement to businesses that are fighting to survive, have been instrumental in driving e-sales at these small, local establishments. Festive gifting gets utility-focused Consumers are now leaning towards gifts with high functionality and utility value, as opposed to standard festive sweets or dry fruit tokens. Home confinements have led to consumers realizing the need to constantly upgrade or enhance their abodes. It comes as no surprise that home décor and furnishings topped this year’s festive shopping lists with over 50% respondents displaying preference to spend on gifts under this category. Big budgets parked for electronics, dimming the spotlight on jewellery Despite being considered auspicious as well as status symbols, gold and precious metal jewellery which have been traditional festive gifting favorites seem to have fallen out of favor with Indian shoppers this year. The pandemic has inspired consumers to put their money where major dependencies lie; in tech gadgets. While traditionally festive shopping has been an offline retail activity, pandemic-induced restrictions put in place to contain the virus forced most retail activity to move online. A practice that many consumers have got familiar with and also appreciate for the bouquet of benefits it has to offer. However, this year, even with the lifting of most restrictions, high vaccinations rates and a lower covid caseload in India, Shopify India has witnessed a continued preference for virtual retail. Contactless spending set to dominate the future of payments in India and in ‘Bharat’ With the pandemic necessitating contactless payments and boosting cashless transactions, cash is no longer king in an economy which was previously heavily reliant on cash. InMobi surveyed over 2500 smartphone users across 80 tier-1, tier-2, and tier-3 cities and clusters in India using its consumer intelligence platform Pulse, to throw light on consumer preferences, shopping patterns, peak-shopping timelines, and device usage patterns. According to the report, 68% of the respondents plan to shop online this festive season, with 43% of Indians increasing their online shopping budgets this year, and parallelly, 39% decreasing their offline shopping budgets. Additionally, 1 in 3 respondents that hail from tier 2 and tier 3 cities claim to be first-time online shoppers. Commenting on the growing importance of mobile in the festive shopping journey, <keyword id="3633879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasuta-agarwal" source="Orion">Vasuta Agarwal</keyword>, Managing Director, Asia Pacific at InMobi shared, “The festive season always remains about larger-than-life emotions, get-togethers, and a plethora of traditions. Almost 60% respondents in T-1, T-2, and T-3 cities plan to make purchases in the period before Dussehra, defining the peak timeline for their festive shopping. The report also reveals deeper insights on the evolving shopping patterns this year among the Bargain Hunters, Category Explorers, and Brand Lovers segments. <ul><li>47% of festive shoppers fall in the Bargain Hunters segment, as they are unsure on the categories they plan to purchase and are primarily on the hunt for attractive offers, irrespective of category.</li><li>39% of festive shoppers fall in the Category Explorers segment as they have decided the categories that they intend to shop in but are yet to finalize the exact brand or product. They are expected to spend 20% higher than last year.</li><li>14% are Brand Lovers as they have already made their decisions on the specific brands and the products that they will purchase. Driven by UPI-based transactions, about 81 per cent of consumers intend to shop online during this festive season in India, while one in two consumers are willing to increase their spending compared to last year, a new survey report showed on Monday. Digital payment methods are on the rise, with 42 per cent of consumers saying they will choose unified payments interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword>)-for online festive shopping. In addition, 57 per cent indicated that their preferred digital payment method for earning rewards and cashback is UPI, especially during the festive season. About 75 per cent are interested in buying electronic gadgets and products (smartphones, TVs, refrigerators and ACs), luxury and authentic beauty brands, home furnishing/improvement items and consumables, online, according to the report by <keyword id="17495816" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nielsen-media-india" source="Orion">Nielsen Media India</keyword>, on behalf of Amazon India. The survey said that 87 per cent of consumers in metropolitan cities and 86 per cent across tier-2 cities (population 10-40 lakh) prefer to shop online for the festive period. "We are inspired to learn that consumers this year are excited and willing to spend and shop more online. As a marketplace, we are confident that the 'Amazon Great India Festival 2023' will offer a seamless shopping experience, incredible value and the widest selection of domestic and international brands and products," said Manish Tiwary, Country Manager India Consumer Business, Amazon India. More than 70 per cent of consumers wait for online festive shopping events to purchase electronic items. Over 75 per cent of consumers are excited with attractive bank offers and no-cost EMIs for making their purchase more convenient and rewarding, said the report. Around 80 per cent consumers said online festive shopping events provide access to trendy brands for apparel, footwear, and various fashion accessories with nearly 64 per cent sharing their intent to purchase across these categories this festive season. Driven by about 140 million shoppers, India is likely to witness Rs 90,000 crore worth of online gross merchandise value (GMV) in the festive month this year. UPI set to drive festive sales this year, electronics to be top choice again: Report

The electronics category is expected to jump to a 41% rise making the category the most popular among the consumers during the festive season. Fashion and apparel are expected to touch the 33% rise in the market. As work from home continues to be a part of the system, Furniture and Homeware products are expected to grow about 11%. As per the analysis, consumers will be preferring online shopping to offline shopping thereby increasing the hike in sales during the festival time. The gifting options, however, brought forward a mixed opinion. 53% of respondents said they would be visiting local markets for festive shopping. In terms of their inclination towards online shopping, 50% of respondents said they will prefer online shopping that comes with the convenience of being at their homes. More than 5 lakh people from 300+ districts across India participated in the survey, giving their opinion on the upcoming festive season and their expectations from it. When asked about their <keyword id="932978" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="spending-habits">spending habits</keyword> and the effect of the pandemic on them, 61% respondents believe their spending budget will be lessened. Of the remaining respondents, 17% believed that the spending will remain the same as every year and 22% thought that festival budgets will in fact be heightened. The survey also asked the respondents about the categories they would like to spend on. New clothes topped the list with 30% followed by electronics at 19%, automobiles at 14% and precious jewelry like gold and silver at 11%. The remaining 53% chose miscellaneous items.

We observed that consumers apply the basket and sales strategy during e-commerce sales specifically for the Big Billion Days period, wherein consumers place their items into shopping carts prior to the date of sale and complete their transaction while the platform commerce sale goes live. In Criteo’s 2020 data, it can be seen that people started to look into items approximately 3 days before, recording 120.8% in the indexed basket. Moreover, growing trends of video ads indicate that video is gaining importance this festive season.
