<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nike will release the Air Jordan 1 Chicago "Lost and Found" on November 19.</li><li>The company will likely release more pairs than usual to make them available to more customers.</li></ul>Nike knows sneaker collectors are frustrated. For years, the company's most-hyped shoes have too often been snapped up by resellers who use computer programs, better known as bots, or backdoored by sneaker boutiques that it partners with.The Air Jordan 1 Chicago "Lost and Found," which will be released November 19, is the latest and biggest test of Nike's work to make drops more fair. In line with its ongoing efforts, Nike's already given some die-hard fans early access to the shoe, will likely release more pairs than usual, and recently announced plans to crack down on resellers who buy multiple pairs of the same shoe on its app and website. Thousands of sneakerheads will likely be left empty-handed this weekend because of high consumer demand for the classic colorway. Still, analysts said the company's work to make drops more fair is starting to pay dividends."For so many years, if Nike was doing anything to solve unfairness or if they even recognized that it was an issue that needed solving, there was no transparency or acknowledgment to the consumer that was the case," said Dylan Dittrich, the head of research at Altan Insights and the author of the book "Sneakonomic Growth," which tracks the growth of sneakers as an asset class. "Not everyone will hit on every product. But the process isn't quite as much of a black box as it used to be, and in terms of perception, there was really nowhere to go but up."Nike's CEO John Donahoe acknowledged in a March 2021 internal meeting that Nike had a problem with consumer trust, despite years of work by the company to defeat the bots that snap up limited-edition products. "We've been working on anti-bot technology for the last several years," Donahoe said, according to <a href="https://www.complex.com/sneakers/nike-ceo-john-donahoe-reselling-scandal-ann-hebert-joe-west-coast-streetwear">an account of the meeting published by Complex</a>. "That is part of the solution, but we need to double down our efforts."Criticism of how Nike releases sneakers spiked last year after the son of a former Nike vice president, Ann Hebert (now Freeman), was found to be reselling shoes in mass, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-sneaker-resale-scandal-wont-eliminate-bots-backdoors-plugs-2021-3">fueling complaints that some people had more access</a> to the hottest shoes than others. During the peak of the pandemic, as supply chains snarled and consumers had more money to spend, many models, including Jordan 1s and Dunks, were also difficult to acquire at retail. Donahoe told Wall Street stock analysts last December that Nike had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-dedication-score-gets-sneakerheads-more-high-heat-sneakers-2022-1">created a "dedication score"</a> designed to help the most loyal customers get more access to hot sneakers, noting invitations to purchase the popular Air Jordan 11 "Cool Grey" were sent to the "largest female-focused group yet and sold out in the first hour." "We continue to see Exclusive Access serve as a defining marketing mechanism to connect with consumers," Donahoe said. This weekend's launch of the Air Jordan 1 Chicago "Lost and Found" comes with the latest iteration of Exclusive Access. The company said <a href="https://www.complex.com/sneakers/air-jordan-1-high-lost-and-found-snkrs-exclusive-access">customers who had lost 20 previous raffles for Jordan 1s</a> on its SNKRS app were eligible for Exclusive Access.It's also been reported that the sneaker <a href="https://www.nicekicks.com/air-jordan-1-retro-high-og-chicago-lost-and-found-dz5485-612/#:~:text=It's%20been%20rumored%20that%20the,is%20what%20is%20usually%20offered.">will drop in significantly higher volumes</a> than similar releases in the past, meaning collectors will have more chances to get a pair, part of a pattern that seems to extend to the recent "Fire Red" Air Jordan 3 and "Playoff" Air Jordan 12 releases. The potential downside: Too many Jordans could reduce demand in the long term. In 2017, there were so many retros on shelves that Wall Street encouraged Nike to pull back, with Sam Poser, then at Susquehanna Financial Group, writing, "Nike should be aggressively reducing the pairs available for the Jordan Retro launches so not to leave residual product in the marketplace which would likely damage the brand's cachet."Poser doesn't have the same concerns today, noting Nike has bigger problems to solve. "Jordans and Air Force 1s and Dunks are still doing great," he told Insider, adding that the problem for Nike right now is ongoing supply-chain chaos and inventory buildup, not too many Jordans. The company in September <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-to-ramp-up-discount-products-to-clear-out-inventory-2022-9">reported a 44% increase in inventory</a> and is discounting non-retro products. Among its remaining challenges, Nike must be even more transparent about Exclusive Access selection, said the sneaker and sportswear <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@TalksWithTJ">digital creator TJ Keasal</a>."All eyes are on Nike for transparency to adhere to the parameters they voluntarily offered to the public," she said. "Was it really targeting only accounts with 20-plus Jordan 1 losses? And if not, Nike risks a loss of good faith."

Last week, the sports retailer announced a new partnership with Beyoncé, with plans to co-create new footwear and apparel that will run the gamut from performance- to lifestyle-focused items. Beyoncé is additionally planning to work with Adidas to relaunch her athleisure brand, Ivy Park.The partnership is part of Adidas' wider strategy to win over women. In 2018, Adidas <a href="https://www.adidas.com/us/shebreaksbarriers">launched</a> the "She Breaks Barriers" campaign that advocated for wider media coverage of women's sports. According to the most recent version of Piper Jaffray's biannual teen survey, 22% of all female teenage respondents said they collected sneakers or identified as "sneakerheads." That's fewer than the percentage of male teen respondents who identified as sneakerheads, which came in at 31%. With fewer female teen sneakerheads than male, there could be an opportunity for brands to tap into the market. Clothing was the top thing teen girls reported spending money on, while food was No. 1 for teen boys. And, while according to Piper Jaffray, the average teenage boy shops using Nike's SNKRS app 39 times a year, the average teenage girls shops it 19 times a year. Adidas has won over sneakerheads in recent years with its Yeezy collaboration with rapper Kanye West. As popular Adidas styles such as Stan Smith and the Superstar have fallen out of style, Adidas has said it plans to focus more on Yeezy, boosting the number of product launches to between 20 and 30 a year, up from two or three a few years ago.A footwear collaboration with Beyoncé could be a similar hit, winning over a slightly different set of sneakerheads. Adidas isn't the only retailer trying to win over women, sneakerheads, and the cross-section of the two. Nike is making major investments in its women-centric offerings, with changes such as launching more sneaker designs and athleisure offerings. The Jordan 1 Retro Fragment can resell for up to $2,000. </li><li>Nike makes and markets its iconic sneakers to increase the value of the Jordan brand, which brought sports apparel into the mainstream in the 90s.</li><li>The Air Jordan 1 is widely credited as the catalyst for sneaker-culture.</li></ul>Following is a transcript of the video.Narrator: This is the Jordan 1 Retro Fragment. It originally retailed for $185 in 2014. But today a pair can resell for up to $2,000.And this is the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Core Black/Red, which retailed at $220 in 2016 and now resells for $900. The Fragment's resale value more than doubles its competition. These shoes were both sold in limited releases, so why did Jordans become so much more expensive?It all has to do with the value of the Jordan brand and how it makes and markets its iconic sneakers.Matt Powell: The fact that it's made in China where the tariffs are higher, made in the best factories, made with more material (basketball shoes tend to use more material than a running shoe), and then trying to be as close to the original product are all things that have driven prices up there.Narrator: According to Matt's research, the average price of a basketball sneaker is about $110, while a Jordan's average price is about $145. To understand why Jordan Brand can charge more, let's go all the way back to the beginning, before the Jordan 1 was introduced.Before the 1984-85 season, Nike signed an unproven MJ to a five-year deal worth more than three times the richest contract at that point. But that wasn't the only unusual decision Nike made while launching the Air Jordan brand. The Air Jordan 1 swapped the standard white upper for a black one, which violated the NBA's uniform policy and resulted in a $5,000 fine per game.Announcer: On September 15, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe. On October 18, the NBA threw them out of the game. Nike recognized this unique marketing opportunity and footed Mike's bill as he went on to win Rookie of the Year, playing every game in his banned namesake sneaker.Amir Ismael: It just showed that he was rebellious, and it was something that people gravitated to, and they wanted to wear them too. It was like first sneaker that really shook up sneaker culture. I think it's the shoe that catapulted sneakers to where they are today, because it was the first shoe that people saw and wanted more than the average shoe.Narrator: Mike's success as a rookie made a big impact on Nike's bottom line. The original Jordan 1 hit stores across America in March 1985, priced at $65. And at the end of the year, the Air Jordan franchise had made $100 million in revenue.The Air Jordan 2 wasn't as successful. After just 18 games in his new design, Jordan suffered a season-ending broken foot. Reports surfaced about Mike being unhappy and looking to jump ship to Adidas. The Air Jordan 3 became a crucial crossroads for Jordan and Nike.Enter Tinker Hatfield. Today, he's known as the architect of modern sneaker design. Back then, he was known for innovating Nike's Air Max technology. His Jordan 3 design became legendary. It pioneered the first-ever mid-cut basketball sneaker, included elephant-print overlays, and immortalized His Airness in the Jumpman logo. And Tinker incorporated his Air Max technology into the sole.Matt Cohen: Those three things, I think, brought its cultural importance because it was a statement shoe, right? So now you're actually making a statement by wearing a basketball shoe, which wasn't necessarily the purpose of wearing a basketball shoe off-court.Narrator: The company's rollout of the Jordan 3 was equally as legendary as the design. Nike's marketing team connected Jordan with Spike Lee for what would become some of the most memorable commercials in history.Spike Lee: You know how I get up from my game? Do you know? Do you know? Do you know? That's right, Air Jordan, Air Jordan, Air Jordan.Powell: You really saw the Jordan brand become a luxury brand in the United States. It was our designer sneaker, and it made the shoes very visible, and that's a big part of conspicuous consumption is to be able to look across the room and see that that person's wearing a $100 shoe, or $300 shoe in today's parlance.Narrator: During all this, the price of Jordans had jumped to $100, significantly higher than the top basketball sneaker at the time, Converse's Weapon. Jordan marketed its sneakers as a luxury product, to match MJ's talent and style, and in the process created a cultural phenomenon, bringing sports apparel into the mainstream.Cohen: He was a very marketable figure, with a great smile and a big hoop earring, and people wanted to look like him. And so you started seeing this face all over the world.Narrator: But the brand priced out kids from low-income families who wanted them the most. And by the '90s, Jordans were so coveted, violence erupted around them. Two teens were even killed for their Jordan sneakers. Nevertheless, the phenomenon continued. Jordans were a status symbol that couldn't be stopped.Ismael: Whether you're into fashion, whether you're into sports, or whether you're just a fan of Michael Jordan himself, you have to know about Jordan Brand, you have to own something from Jordan Brand.Narrator: Hatfield continued to design Jordan's signature sneakers for the next 12 years. The Jordan brand became a sneaker giant, and MJ became the greatest player in basketball history. Their run lasted for more than a decade, but that was all about to change.In 2013, Adidas released new technology, signed Kanye West, and started making big gains. Despite increased competition, Jordan's prices stayed high. That year's new Jordans retailed at $250, the highest price for a new signature Jordan released at that point. Retro prices jumped too. A retro is a rerelease of an original shoe.A Sneaker Life: $220 for these, $400 for these.Cohen: This happens with every sneaker brand. As they see the resale prices of their shoes go higher, they want more of the pie, and so they started to try and get more of the pie.Ismael: When Adidas came out with a lot of their more popular styles during that era, it caused a lot of people to just say, "I'm gonna stop buying Jordans for right now, and I'm gonna focus on these newer styles that are comfortable, that are cool, that are trendy."Narrator: Jordans weren't selling out as fast as they had in previous years, and Jordan increased supply to balance out revenues. But it oversaturated the market. According to Sole Collector, between September and November 2017, Jordan released 30 different retros. The price hikes, combined with an oversaturated market and increased competition, led to what Sole Collector called "Jordan Fatigue," and Adidas' market share nearly doubled.Jordan Brand President Larry Miller admitted that the brand had released too many shoes and needed to figure out how to connect to young consumers again. And Nike CEO Mark Parker did just that with his edit-and-amplify strategy. He helped Nike R&amp;D cut down from 350 sneaker ideas to 50.
