In fact, seven out of ten people in India want to receive their goods not only faster but also in a more sustainable manner, says a report by FedEx Express, a global transportation company for deliveries.<br /><br />According to the What’s Next in E-Commerce survey report, more Indian consumers prioritised sustainability than those in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, who conversely were more focused on delivery lead time.<br /><br />Furthermore, eight out of ten consumers in India prefer to buy from companies with an effective environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy – but only 38% of the surveyed SMEs actually have ESG goals.<br /><br />“Sustainability is no longer an optional extra for SMEs interested in expanding their e-commerce businesses. Consumers increasingly see it as an essential and non-negotiable part of their decision-making process,” said Kawal Preet, president of Asia Pacific, Middle East &amp; Africa (AMEA) at FedEx Express.<br /><br />The survey was conducted among SMEs and consumers in India, and 10 other markets in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region (AMEA) in July 2022.<br /><br />However, 74% of the surveyed companies either fear the associated costs, or are unconvinced that any investment in the area of sustainability will produce effective returns.<br /><br />“Over half of SMEs are, in fact, in the process of developing an ESG policy right now – they are strongly recommended to finalize this process as quickly as possible,” the report said.<br /><br />“Today, consumer consciousness towards the environment exerts a stronger influence on the way they perceive a brand, making it imperative for businesses to embrace an effective ESG strategy. Working with sustainability-focused partners, including collaborating with the right logistics provider, will go a long way for SMEs in India to play their part in limiting the impact of climate change,” said Kami Viswanathan, senior vice president of FedEx Express Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa operations.<br /><br />Over 90% of the consumers were even ready to pay a premium for products that have proven to be positive to the environment.<br /><br />Increased use of electric vehicles for transportation is one way of reducing carbon emissions and reducing traffic congestion, the report suggested.<br /><br />“More than 80% of the total greenhouse gas emissions made by a typical consumer-facing enterprise emanate from outside their internal operations, largely coming from manufacturing and elsewhere in their supply chains. Indians want faster yet sustainable delivery of their goods: FedEx report

As we reported this week, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-slovenski-on-walmart-healthcare-strategy-clinics-home-care-2019-9">that's just the start</a>.</p><p>Zach Tracer and Lydia Ramsey talked to Sean Slovenski, Walmart's president of health and wellness, to get the skinny on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-slovenski-on-walmart-healthcare-strategy-clinics-home-care-2019-9">company's plans to wade deeper into the massive $3.5 trillion US healthcare system</a>.</p><p>As they report, the retailer opened a health clinic in Dallas, Georgia, on Friday. It plans to open another in Calhoun, Georgia. If everything goes well, Walmart could soon be the largest provider of basic healthcare in the region.</p><p>The goal, according to Slovenski, is to do for healthcare what Walmart's supercenter stores did for retail. As Zach and Lydia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-slovenski-on-walmart-healthcare-strategy-clinics-home-care-2019-9">report</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;"><em>Slovenski said Walmart planned to offer the doctor visits, dental cleanings, and lab tests at prices that are about 30 to 50% below what people have been paying, in part by cutting out middlemen when possible and using Walmart's massive size to negotiate. Walmart's push into healthcare, SoftBank's struggles, and why FedEx dumped Amazon

<p>Telecom companies, phone companies, network vendors and tower operators in the country are on a high alert; keeping close watch on any disruption in operations after a deadly ransomware cyber attack infected millions of computers in about 100 countries, including Russia, China and the UK. </p><p>Also read: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Brace-up-for-higher-impact-from-WannaCry-ransomware-worm-150-countries-already-adversely-affected/articleshow/58678817.cms">Brace up for higher impact from WannaCry ransomware worm; 150 countries already adversely affected</a></p><p>As per top <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Telecom-industry-is-facing-20-revenue-loss-all-thanks-to-Reliance-Jios-free-services/articleshow/57202392.cms">telcos</a>, there was no immediate impact of the attack, which was because of <keyword id="6362093" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="wannacry">WannaCry</keyword>, a malicious piece of software. However, they are ensuring the safety of country's phone networks and prevent impacts of the malware. </p><p>The malware has already impacted UK's health system and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/FedEx-just-launched-a-new-service-that-takes-on-Amazons-super-popular-fulfillment-program/articleshow/57030925.cms">FedEx</a>. </p><p>The malware is also called ransomware since it first encrypts a victim's computer files and then demands that it be paid for decryption. After entering an organsation's computer systems, the malware looks for the most vulnerable machines before clinically infecting them. </p><p>"<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Voda-Idea-merger-gave-India-Incs-MA-tally-a-fourfold-jump/articleshow/58163035.cms">Vodafone India</a> has taken measures to protect its systems and continues to monitor the situation closely as it is aware that some corporations and organisations are being targeted by ransomware attacks," a company spokesman told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/telcos-on-high-alert-post-global-ransomware-blitz/articleshow/58674898.cms">ET</a>.</p><p><keyword id="133375" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajan-Mathews">Rajan Mathews</keyword>, Director General of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/COAI-calls-TRAIs-consultation-paper-on-call-connect-charges-unfair/articleshow/53601801.cms">Cellular Operators Association of India</a>, said that the ransomware attack "should be seen as a watershed moment", adding that the government needs to invest more in cyber security preparedness.</p><br />(Image source Imgur)

Ransomware cyber attack is keeping Indian telcos on their toes

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Earthport</span></p><p class="caption">Hank Uberoi, Earthport CEO.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Hank Uberoi, Goldman Sachs' former technology chief, says Earthport is "<span>probably the single largest investment opportunity I've seen in my lifetime, and I've been investing for 28 years."</span></p><p><span>As Earthport's boss, Uberoi is obviously biased. But he seriously believes the company can revolutionise the way international business payments are made.</span></p><p>"If you think about manufacturing, go back 30, 40 years, if you wanted to buy materials in one country, manufacture in a second country, then sell in a third country, you really had to be very large," Uberoi tells Business Insider.</p><p>"You needed your own ships, your own aircrafts. Fast forward to today and with FedEx and UPS, nobody would dream of moving that stuff around themselves. These guys are deep experts in a highly complex and highly regulated field. They will always be better at this than any company, no matter how large."</p><h2>'<span>Try calling Citibank saying can you send this message to India</span><span>'</span></h2><p>A similar transition hasn't yet happened in the world of finance. Banks still try and do it all when it comes to moving money around the world.</p><p>When they can't, they partner with companies or banks that can. But these partners take a cut and communication can be an issue, meaning the process is expensive and convoluted.</p><p>"You've got this hodgepodge of banks around the world and they've got relationships with each other," Uberoi says. "I'm a bank in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>, I've got a relationship with a bank in Malaysia, I send instructions to them. 30 years ago when there were 7 countries that mattered and there were a few thousand companies and a few million payments a year, that worked fine."</p><p>But in a world of globalised trade, that model is out of date, Uberoi says. "Cross border payments are expensive, they're error prone, the money you send is not what arrives, and that's creating a real issue."<span><br /></span></p><p>He should know - he spent 15 years at Goldman Sachs, rising to head the bank's technology division, before moving to hedge fund giant Citadel.</p><p>Uberoi has his own horror story of moving money: "I do a lot of business in India. I gave the Reserve Bank of India a code they asked for but they said 'No, it's got to come from the bank you sent the payment with via Swift [a messaging system used by banks] in this particular format'.</p><p>"Try calling somebody in Citibank saying can you send this message to India. It literally took me 2 and a half months. If you don't resolve it they'll blacklist your account. It's a convoluted, anarchic infrastructure, and that's just one country."</p><h2><span>'<span>We go into banks and we know more than they do</span>'</span></h2><p>For banks, international payments are just one of a number of things they do and fixing inefficiencies in the system is not high on their agendas.</p><p>Earthport is about "being very deep and very narrow in a very complex, highly regulated market," says Uberoi. "We are essentially creating the FedEx, UPS, and DHL of payments."</p><p>Rather than simply trust partners to get on with it, Earthport sends payments to its own hubs within each country who make sure payments are properly formatted, reducing the chance of error. It then uses the local payment networks - the "rails" - within each country to process the payments.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton</span></p><p class="caption">Uberoi sees Earthport as the FedEx of money.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Uberoi explains: "We move money around in bulk and then we create files that are pre-validated and pre-formatted for the local clearing and we deliver to our partner banks in the local country, with the view that they shouldn't touch it. The whole idea is to eliminate any chance of errors creeping into the system from manual processes."</p><p>Earthport's strength lies in blending a smart technology platform with human expertise of local payment infrastructures.</p><p>Uberoi says: "Because we do one thing and one thing only, we've got people talking to 64 countries everyday. Whenever anything changes we know instantly. This is not a static database, it's changing every hour."</p><p>"We can go into any one of the banks and pretty quickly it becomes clear that we know more about payments than they do. Not because they're not smart, but because that function is fragmented across so many different countries and departments that there's no one person who actually sees it end to end."</p><h2>'M<span>y goal was to do this for 6 months on a part-time basis'</span></h2><p>Uberoi ended up running Earthport almost by accident. He invested in the company, which is listed in London, back in 2009. But in 2010 he ended up playing a part in <a href="http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-1687605/Earthport-axes-boss-amid-uncertain-future.html">ousting the then CEO over troubles with the companies finances</a>.</p><p>"I put some money in and my goal was to do this for 6 months on a part-time basis and then grow it from there," Uberoi recalls.</p><p>"About 3 years ago it became obvious that this is probably the single largest investment opportunity I've seen in my lifetime, and I've been investing for 28 years. That's why I'm doing this full time - I don't get paid for this."</p><p>The market for cross border business-to-business payments globally is $28 trillion (£18.4 trillion) a year, compared to $685 billion (£451 billion) a year for the remittance market, where individuals send money across borders.</p><p>And while the market for international payments for consumers is hugely crowded - TransferWise, Azimo, WorldRemit, and Western Union to name just a few - almost no one is trying to tackle business to business payments.</p><p>"The size of the opportunity is such that if we got 5% of the market, we'd be the largest payment company in the world," Uberoi says.</p><h2><span>'If we were private we would be raising at a very different valuation'</span></h2><p>Because the opportunity for growth is so big, Earthport is investing aggressively in growth. Part of that involves pricing its services competitively.</p><p>Uberoi says: "Our solution is faster, cheaper, more efficient, and we could have said it's a so much better solution we'll charge you $50 (£33) more than you're paying now. Instead we've said, it costs you $100 (£66) a payment? We'll charge you low single digit dollars. We basically decided we're not in this for the short run."</p><p>The knock-on effect of this, though, is profit and revenues are not as big as investors would like. Earthport's <a href="http://www.investegate.co.uk/earthport-plc--epo-/rns/final-results/201509290701044742A/">full-year results on Tuesday</a> showed a 78% rise in revenue to £19.27 million ($29.2 million) but losses widened from £6.33 million to £8.71 million ($9.6 million). Shares fell by more than 1.5% on the day.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Investing.com</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"There's very much a timetable for profit," Uberoi says. "We had predicted that we would break even on a six-month run rate basis in the last half, which we did. But at that point we realised that the opportunity has become so large that it would be silly to think about breakeven rather than invest in growing."</p><p>Earthport is listed on AIM, the stock market for growing companies in London, and has a market value of just £192 million ($291 million) - trifling compared to the huge private financial technology companies currently springing up.</p><p>It's a point not lost on Uberoi: "We're listed for historical reasons, if we were private today, if you look at what's happening in the private equity world, we would be raising money at a very different valuation. It would be measured not on where we are today, not on our revenue growth or how we're doing now, it would be based on the size of the market opportunity, what are the barriers to entry.</p><p>"Take a company like Uber, they don't make money, they're not going to make money for 10 years. But look at the size of the market."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Uberoi thinks Earthport would be valued more like Uber if it were private.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Uberoi isn't planning to take the business private though.</p><p>He says: "A couple of years ago [going private] crossed our minds, because the market really didn't understand. They still don't really understand but what happened is we realised our clients really like the fact that we're listed.</p><p>"What we're doing is a mission critical function. If they're going to move it to us, they need to be really confident that we'll do it well, that we'll be around, and that a competitor is not going to buy us. The company is on track to process $10 billion (£6.4 billion) worth of transactions by the end of the year.</p><h2><span>'We'll solve the problem in the way that works'</span></h2><p>Uberoi's focus now is on expanding the business. Earthport is in talks to enter Nigeria among other countries and it is also adding to its product offering.</p><p>The company recently signed a deal to offer payments through Ripple, the Silicon Valley payment system developed using the blockchain, the software that underpins bitcoin.</p><p>"We started seeing people are interested in new technologies - bitcoin, blockchain, distributed ledger technology," Uberoi says. "We said, we don't know if this is the right way for moving money around but banks are interested in exploring it, so we'll explore it." </p><p>As a hub, Earthport on-boards its clients only once before letting them use any of the payment methods they want. It<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> also meets anti-money laundering requirements, meaning banks can use the efficiency of Ripple's distributed ledger technology with minimal hassle.</span></p><p>"We're going to become the utility and hub for the industry that finds the fastest and most efficient way of doing something at any point in time. Dash101, the Full Stack Ecommerce Platform Launched

New Delhi, <keyword id="20730654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukka-proteins" source="keywords">Mukka Proteins</keyword>, which manufactures fish meal, fish oil, and fish soluble paste, on Monday fixed a price band of Rs 26-28 apiece, for its Rs 224 crore <keyword id="19913114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="initial-public-offering" source="keywords">Initial Public Offering</keyword> (IPO). Mukka Proteins IPO to open on Feb 29; sets price band of ₹26-28/ share

<p><em></em></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Bearbottom, a men's clothing brand, has costs 15% to 20% higher than they were before 2020.</li><li>Its CEO and founder told Insider how the small business found ways to be leaner across the company.</li><li>Most of its cost saving has been through open communication with vendors and partners.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Robert Felder, the 28-year-old CEO and founder of the men's clothing brand </em><a href="https://bearbottomclothing.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Bearbottom</em></a><em>, about how he's dealt with inflation over the past few years. Insider has verified the business' growth with documentation. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>Like most business owners, I started noticing our costs ticking up in 2020 when the pandemic led to limited shipping capacity and skyrocketing prices. Since then, we've seen significant price increases in nearly every aspect of the business: fabric, shipping, warehouse materials, and advertising. </p><p>At the peak of price hikes, we saw cost increases of close to 40% compared with 2020 for our best-selling product. Since then, we have seen some prices normalize a bit, but our costs are sitting closer to 15% to 20% higher than before.</p><p>Yet we've done everything in our power to avoid passing this increase on to our customers, even going so far as to make a pledge to customers at the start of this year to not raise our prices in 2023. I think it means a lot to our customers, and as other brands increase prices, I think it gives us an opportunity to pick up more of the market — we saw our total sales increase by 149% last year.</p><div type="image" title="Email pledge to Bearbottom customers" height="595" width="582" msid="99967263" hostid="261" sizebytes="35144"></div><p>The cost increases have been challenging for us to absorb, but we have put energy into finding ways to be leaner across almost every aspect of our business, without ever sacrificing the product quality or customer experience.</p><h2>We've collaborated with the vendors we work with to create efficiencies</h2><p>Many of our cost-saving efficiencies have been found through open communication with our vendors and partners.</p><p>For example, we approached our shipping partners at FedEx and the post office to share our shipping parameters (standard package sizes, ideal delivery times, etc.) and asked what we could do on our end to make things easier for them and maybe lower the cost. They suggested things such as consolidating packages and getting items to them earlier. We also worked with our manufacturers in Bengaluru, India, to adjust our packaging sizes so that we could use 97% of each container shipped to the US, which drove down the cost per item.</p><p>Our partners are open to these conversations because we're not just approaching them asking to pay less money. We're working with them to save both of us money. Our director of sourcing has been in the industry for decades and has been able to help our factories implement best practices that save us money and expand their businesses. </p><div type="image" title="Two men work on the floor around a large piece of paper" height="2996" width="3024" msid="99967264" hostid="261" sizebytes="1287412"></div><p>Doing this successfully has involved a deep understanding of all aspects of the business so we can spot opportunities for efficiencies and have real relationships with our vendors so they are open to working together to find solutions. </p><h2>We spend where it's worth it and save where we can</h2><p>Swallowing these increased costs wasn't just about telling my team that there was no budget for anything. In fact, there are some things we're spending a lot more on this year to strengthen what's worked well.</p><p>I challenged our marketing team this year to cut marketing costs by 15%, while still working toward our goal of increasing revenue by about 50%. To my point above, that has involved working closely with our reps at Meta, Google, and TikTok to come up with new methods of targeting that help us lower our customer-acquisition costs.</p><p>It's also involved investing more in creating great content, which we've found is key for our growth. Besides creating a lot of content in-house, our team has been focused on sourcing user-generated content, developing relationships with customers who want to help the brand, and converting what they've created into posts that help us gain customers or highlight product features. This content is more authentic and more affordable.</p><p>All in all, our team has been energized by this challenge to create a comprehensive strategy that keeps total costs down while effectively reaching our customers.</p><h2>We keep the long game in mind</h2><p>There's never a dull moment in business, and you're always going to be facing some kind of problem. Trusting that we're in this for the long term helps me see the bigger picture through challenges like these.</p><p>I truly believe that, eventually, the market will correct itself and a lot of these costs will come back down. In the meantime, we're going to control the controllable, stick to the principles we were founded on, and do what we need to stay profitable while delivering the best product and experience for our customers. </p><p>In the short term, that may just help us get a bigger piece of a smaller pie — but I think it's what will build a truly lasting brand.</p>

Growth in global imports of capital goods fell to -3% in the first quarter of this year - its lowest level in more than three years - while growth in global fixed investment slowed by 1.3 percentage points to 3.4%, <a href="https://ftalphaville.ft.com/2019/06/03/1559545796000/The-true-cost-of-trade-wars/">Ahya told the Financial Times</a>.</p><p>"Recent conversations with investors have reinforced the sense that markets are underestimating the impact of trade tensions," Ahya wrote. "Investors are generally of the view that the trade dispute could drag on for longer, but they appear to be overlooking its potential impact on the global macro outlook."</p><p>Separately, JPMorgan pegs the chances of a US recession in the second half of this year at 40%, up from 25% a month ago, according to Bloomberg. That will include a direct investment of around $1 billion by SoftBank and partner Dragoneer Investment Group, Business Insider <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-board-says-it-approved-equality-among-shareholders-and-to-move-forward-with-softbank-deal-2017-10">reported</a>. Beyond the direct investment, SoftBank and Dragoneer will purchase shares from existing investors and employees to up their total stake in Uber to about 15%.</li><li><strong>The board also made significant changes to the company's governance.</strong> Those changes included expanding the existing number of board seats from 11 to 17. Additionally, the board annulled the special voting privileges associated with the "supervoting" shares belonging to the company's earliest employees, including controversial former CEO Travis Kalanick. That move diminishes Kalanick's control at the company, where he and his close associates still held major sway after he stepped down from the CEO role thanks to their supervoting shares and board seats.</li></ul><p><strong>The announcements come just a week after Reuters <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/transportation-and-logistics-briefing-lyft-reportedly-exploring-first-step-towards-ipo-us-roads-need-upgrades-for-self-driving-cars-grabs-latest-moves-to-combat-uber-2017-9">reported</a> that rival Lyft is exploring hiring an advisory firm to help with its own IPO.</strong> Uber likely does not want to IPO much after its competitor at the risk of driving up interest in Lyft among investors seeking to get an early jump in the expanding ride-hailing industry.</p><p><strong>The SoftBank-Dragoneer investment and governance changes should help the company move towards its IPO goal.</strong> One early investor <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/03/uber-board-approves-proposed-softbank-investment/">announced</a> plans to launch a class action lawsuit against the company for stripping the privileges around supervoting shares. However, decreasing Kalanick's influence was likely necessary to convince potential investors that Uber is turning the chapter on its past controversies and making serious changes to its much-criticized culture. Meanwhile, the new investment gives Uber some extra funds to invest in defending its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/transportation-and-logistics-briefing-uber-and-lyft-in-talks-with-new-investors-autoliv-to-break-off-tech-business-barriers-to-drone-adoption-in-construction-2017-9">declining</a> market share in the US while it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-travis-kalanick-resignation-leadership-2017-6">fills</a> vacant executive positions and formulates a strategy to balance its finances before its IPO.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="BI Intelligence" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59bc1e7038d20d2a008b6cc6-960/uber lyft rides updated logo.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>BI Intelligence</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>AMAZON TESTING NEW DELIVERY SERVICE: </strong>Amazon is trialing a new service on the West Coast called Seller Flex, which provides deliveries for third-party merchants that sell goods on its platform, according to <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=5&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiHy_vs8NnWAhUGMyYKHfXFAQwQFgg-MAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2017-10-05%2Famazon-is-said-to-test-own-delivery-service-to-rival-f">Bloomberg</a>. The e-commerce giant, which started testing the program in India two years ago, plans to expand the trials throughout the rest of the US next year. </p><p><strong>Seller Flex takes delivery decisions out of the hands of third-party merchants and puts them into the hands of the e-commerce giant. </strong>Amazon already operates its own logistics network for third-party sellers, known as Fulfillment by Amazon, which allows sellers to store their goods in Amazon warehouses and choose between different logistics providers - including UPS and FedEx - to get their goods to customers. With Seller Flex, Amazon picks up the goods from sellers' warehouses, and then decides the best way to route the goods to the customer. Amazon could route the goods through its own logistics network, which includes 16 planes, 76 warehouses and thousands of delivery trucks, or to turn the deliveries over to FedEx or UPS.</p><p><strong>While Amazon has <a href="http://fortune.com/2016/01/28/amazon-ups-fedex/">denied </a>that it wants to build a full-scale logistics business that could rival UPS or FedEx, taking more control of its sellers' deliveries is certainly a step in that direction.</strong></p><ul><li><strong>It'll help the company deliver more of the goods sold on its platform faster. </strong>The primary purpose of Seller Flex is to allow third-party sellers on Amazon to deliver their goods to customers as quickly as possible. Gaining a greater expertise in quickly delivering greater package volumes would be essential if Amazon wanted to rival UPS or FedEx.</li><li><strong>Amazon will start taking ownership of more of the delivery process. </strong>The company will be picking up goods from sellers' warehouses, an important first step of the delivery process. Expanding its control over that part of process is a natural step towards becoming a full-fledged logistics provider, as Amazon could theoretically provide deliveries for other businesses then that don't sell on its marketplace.</li><li><strong>Additionally, Amazon will be able to analyze vast amounts of information related to Seller Flex deliveries that can help it optimize the scheduling, routing, and costs for its own logistics network.</strong> That could also help Amazon become less reliant on its existing logistics partners like UPS or USPS - the data could be used to identify more opportunities where it makes sense for Amazon to handle fulfillment using its own service.</li></ul><p><strong>Enjoy reading this briefing?</strong><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intelligence/transportation-and-logistics-briefing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sign up and receive Transportation &amp; Logistics Briefing to your inbox.</a></p><p><strong>HOW MOOVEL'S APP FITS INTO DAIMLER'S MOBILITY STRATEGY:</strong> German auto giant Daimler is positioning itself for the disruption of car ownership by turning its Moovel app into a one-stop shop for urbanites' transportation needs, Business Insider <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/daimler-moovel-uber-competitor-2017-10">reports</a>. Moovel, Daimler's mobility services subsidiary, originally launched in the US in April 2016 after Daimler merged the subsidiary's RideScout route planning services business, with a Portland, Oregon-based mobile ticketing service called GlobeSherpa. It also houses Daimler's Car2Go car-sharing service.</p><p><strong>Since that launch, Daimler has grown the Moovel app's utility by incorporating an increasing variety of transportation options,</strong> including public transportation, ride-hailing, and car- and bike-sharing services. That allows users to combine these different options - taking a Lyft part of the way then taking a subway train, for example - to get to their destinations quicker. Users can plan their trip and pay for all of these different options within the Moovel app, and Moovel takes a cut of ticket sales. Additionally, Daimler can offer its own urban mobility services like Car2Go and its MyTaxi ride-hailing service within the app.</p><p><strong>Moovel's app still has a small user base though - numbering 3 million across the US and Germany - and it faces significant challenges to growing that base.</strong> Right now the service has 16 public transportation partners across 11 cities, and growing those partnerships to expand the service to new cities has proven challenging, according to Moovel CEO Nat Parker. Many public transit agencies are starting to see ride-hailing and other mobility services as a threat to their own business, as some startups, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-shuttle-public-transit-bus-2017-7">Lyft</a>, launch shuttle services for transporting larger numbers of riders. Moovel, however, offers its public transit partners important data around its users' trips, helping those partners see popular locations for pickups and drop-offs.</p><p><strong>Building its mobility strategy around offering a useful and competitive app is a smart move though for Daimler.</strong> Many automakers, including Ford and GM, have launched mobility services to attract urban consumers. These services are dwarfed though by popular ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft. As automakers grow their mobility services, those services will come into more direct competition with those ride-hailing companies, which have millions of monthly active users. In order to gain mainstream adoption for their mobility services, automakers will need to offer apps that differentiate themselves from ride-hailing apps and entice people to download and use them. Turning its Moovel app into a one-stop shop where users can access many different transportation options - including the popular ride-hailing and public transportation services they already use - is a clever way for Daimler to wedge itself into the future of urban mobility.</p><p><strong>In other news…</strong></p><ul><li><strong>The Senate Transportation Committee sent a bill regulating self-driving cars to the Senate floor for a vote, </strong>according to <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/04/senate-panel-approves-self-driving-car-bill/?sr_source=Twitter">Engadget</a>. The bill is very similar to legislation recently<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/transportation-and-logistics-briefing-house-passes-federal-self-driving-car-legislation-best-logistics-upcoming-ipo-nissans-new-leaf-challenges-tesla-2017-9"> passed</a> by the House of Representatives. If passed and signed by President Donald Trump, it would make the guidelines <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/transportation-and-logistics-briefing-gms-first-self-driving-car-model-new-regulatory-guidelines-for-self-driving-cars-thermal-sensors-for-fully-driverless-vehicles-2017-9">issued</a> last month by the Department of Transportation legally enforceable regulations. The Senate has yet to schedule a vote on the bill.</li><li><strong>Cruise Automation, GM's self-driving car division, has more than doubled the total number of self-driving cars it's testing over the past three months, </strong>according to <a href="http://fortune.com/2017/10/04/gm-self-driving-car-california/">Fortune</a>. Many of these new vehicles are being <a href="https://www.recode.net/2017/10/3/16413068/testing-self-driving-cars-san-francisco-challenging-necessary">deployed</a> in San Francisco through a trial ride-hailing service for Cruise employees, where the sloping, windy roads can be a challenge for the cars' self-driving systems. However, mastering this challenging environment can accelerate technological progress, and could help GM become one of the first companies to deploy self-driving cars in a commercial capacity, as Deutsche Bank <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/25/gm-developing-autonomous-vehicles-at-a-fast-pace-deutsche-bank-says.html">predicted</a> last month.</li><li><strong>Voyage, a self-driving car startup founded earlier this year by several former employees of computer science education firm Udacity, is testing its self-driving cars in a retirement community in San Jose, California, </strong>according to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/04/udacity-spin-out-voyage-is-testing-self-driving-cars-in-retirement-communities/">TechCrunch</a>. The company could be targeting the community for an eventual commercial launch of a self-driving taxi service, as a number of residents can't drive and might be willing to pay for self-driving taxis for mobility purposes.
