When the rates are good, one can lock in some of their savings into FDs. “I advise senior citizens against locking all their disposable funds into FDs particularly of just one tenor,” says Akshar Shah, Founder, Fixed Invest, a digital marketplace of banks and NBFCs. “Senior citizens can use FD laddering to effectively manage liquidity as well as interest rate risk where they divide their savings into FDs of different tenors across years,” he adds. FD laddering involves diversifying FDs into multiple accounts with varying maturity dates. Instead of investing a lump sum in a single FD, individuals distribute their funds across different FDs maturing at different intervals—short-term, medium-term, and long-term. As each FD reaches maturity, it can be reinvested or withdrawn as needed, providing regular access to funds while potentially benefiting from higher interest rates on longer-term deposits. This strategy offers liquidity, steady returns, and flexibility in managing financial goals.

Senior citizen FDs: With interest rates at a high, time to park safe

The rising demand for credit in last couple of days has prompted banks to garner funds aggressively through certificates of deposits (CD), bonds, and fixed deposits (FD). The need for aggressive fund raising arose after the surplus liquidity in the banking system dropped sharply from the record high. According to the data compiled by Prime database, banks have so far raised around Rs 42,000 crore through CDs. This was even after the rates on this instruments are rising sharply. The data also showed that Indian Bank, topped the fund raising list via CDs, raising worth Rs 13,550 crore, which was followed by <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword> raising Rs 6,550 crore and <keyword id="62034" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="punjab-national-bank" source="Orion">Punjab National Bank</keyword> raising Rs 2,875 crore so far in August. "As liquidity is draining out in a calibrated manner from the system, banks are compelled to raise funds through CDs and even through fixed deposits. Some banks are offering special rates for higher FD amounts. With growth picking up, we can expect banks to aggressively raise funds from the market," said <keyword id="14789739" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="venkatakrishnan-srinivasan" source="Orion">Venkatakrishnan Srinivasan</keyword>, founder and managing partner at <keyword id="14790820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rockfort-fincorp" source="Orion">Rockfort Fincorp</keyword>, a Mumbai-based debt advisory firm. Banks credit growth has remained in double digits handily outpacing the deposit growth. The credit growth has increased in couple of weeks due to low base effect, small ticket size loans, higher working capital requirements due to elevated inflation and a shift to bank borrowings on account of high yields in the capital market. The bank credit has grown over 14 per cent on-year, as per data on the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> showed. Meanwhile, liquidity in the banking system has cropped sharply in last couple of months. Currently, it around Rs 45,000 crore, as compared to Rs 1.30 lakh crore last week. The sharp drop has been witnessed due to payments for government bonds and outflows on account of goods and service tax payments. Going forward, market participants expect banks to raise more funds because credit demand is likely to rise amid festive season. While, rates on the instruments will also rise due to narrowing of surplus liquidity. Banks aggressively garnering funds via CDs, FDs amid firm credit off take

Interest rates on deposits need to go up, say experts, as share of FDs in household financial assets drops

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) on July 5 has amended rules for overdue fixed deposits (FD) wherein if a depositor does not claim the proceeds after maturity, the bank will charge the lower interest rates applicable from savings rate or contracted interest.</li><li>RBI classifies a deposit as unclaimed when the depositor doesn’t make any transaction in the account for 10 years or more. </li><li>Reportedly, unclaimed deposits with banks have been growing every year. </li></ul>It commonly happens that people do not share basic financial information with their close ones or family members. At times, because of an unfortunate event of a death, the family members are unaware of the financial details of the deceased person. Besides, some of us fail to keep track of multiple bank accounts and fixed deposits (FD) in different banks as we move cities and jobs. Such proceeds, which are not claimed by the depositor, are kept in Depositors Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF), formed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 2014. Deposits from all banks which are inoperative for at least 10 years are transferred into this large pool of unclaimed money. Currently, there is a large amount of money lying unclaimed in such accounts. As of now, more than Rs 82,000 crore of investor wealth is lying unclaimed in forgotten and lost investments, as per <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/invest/rs-82000-cr-lying-in-unclaimed-bank-a/cs-life-insurance-mutual-funds-pf-how-to-get-your-money-back/articleshow/84089095.cms?from=mdr">ET Wealth estimates</a>. Do interest rates continue on the unclaimed proceeds? Yes, these unclaimed funds will continue to earn interest rates specified by the RBI, and not the rate at which the deposit was made, which are called contracted rates. The RBI has now tweaked rules for interest rates on unclaimed fixed deposits (FD), wherein if depositors forget to claim the proceeds after maturity, the amount left unclaimed will attract interest rate applicable to savings account or contracted rate whichever is lower. Earlier, the interest rates on unclaimed amounts attracted the rate of interest as applicable to savings deposits. This does not make a major difference as interest rates on savings accounts have been decreasing, which means it will always be lower than the contracted rate. RBI classifies a deposit as unclaimed when a depositor doesn’t make any transaction in the account for 10 years or more. The amendment comes when unclaimed deposits with banks have been reportedly growing every year. What should you do to avoid missing such a maturity date? Note down the maturity date of your <keyword id="6568461" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fds">FDs</keyword> and share these details with your family. Do not forget to mention nominee details. If your home address happens to change, update your banks about the same. It is convenient to collect all proceeds if you have a savings account with all banks you have FDs with. However, if not, remember to opt for an auto renewal option so that your FD is renewed for more years with the prevailing FD rate. Setu has already created a testing version on the platform that offers various tenors for FDs including 7-29 days, 30-45 days, 46-90 days, 91-180 days, 181-364 days, and 365 days, with interest rates ranging from 3.5% for the shortest FD to 6.35% for the one-year FD. According to media reports, Google Pay has 150 million monthly active users in India. Looking beyond the CASA fall: Margin pressures, risk of slowdown in loan growth Apart from the slowdown in CASA deposits, a likely increase in margin pressures and risks of a sharp slowdown in loan growth are some of the key factors to watch out for going forward, according to analysts. “We are probably closer to the peak on net interest margin for banks as the cost of funds is likely to move faster than lending yields,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Concerns of a looming economic slowdown could also lead to a slowdown in loan growth, and there are minor signs pointing at a moderation already. According to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India, credit growth stood at 15.7% year-on-year in March 2023, down from the highs of 18% seen in October last year. This was primarily led by a slowdown in corporate loans, and “signs of some sluggishness in retail are also on the horizon due to rising interest rates”, said a report by Emkay Global. Analysts expect robust credit offtake, pegging the growth in loan book to be around 17%. Net interest margins are expected to remain steady as lenders continue to transmit repo rate hikes, offsetting the increase in deposit costs. “Healthy growth, steady margins and normalised credit cost is expected to keep earnings momentum unabated at 33.7% year-on-year ₹42,975 crore,” said a report by ICICI Direct. Analysts at Emkay Global have pencilled in a minor slow down on a sequential basis, but maintained that by and large, earnings growth is expected to remain healthy. While the overall scenario for Indian banks in Q4 looks optimistic and a repeat of Q3 is likely on the cards, especially post the business updates given by HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank, the focus is now on the future outlook and it will be one of the key things to watch out for heading into the Q4 earnings season. Strong Q4 on the cards, but concerns emerge on fall in CASA deposits and credit offtake slowdown

<ul><li>Budget amendment proposes to do away with long-term capital gains tax on debt investments. This effectively ends the tax arbitrage that used to exist between bank deposits and debt schemes. </li><li>Experts view this as a negative for <keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="Orion">mutual funds</keyword> as investors may move capital from debt schemes to bank FDs or other long-term instruments like non-convertible debentures. </li><li>According to CLSA, the measure would have a moderate to low impact on profitability, as bulk of the revenue/profitability for AMCs accrues from equity assets and non-liquid debt AUMs are neither higher growth nor higher profitability segments. </li></ul> It is going to be a busy weekend for mutual fund advisors and distributors, with the government proposing to change the taxation structure of debt schemes. With the change in taxation, distributors and advisors are rushing to lock in large amounts of investments from their HNI customers before the financial year ends. As per the proposed changes in the Finance Bill, investors in debt funds will have to pay tax according to their income slabs. Investors have so far benefited from indexation while calculating long-term capital gains from debt funds but this will now longer be available from 1 April, 2023. However, all investments made before 31 March 2023 will continue to enjoy indexation and LTCG benefits. According to FY24’s Budget amendment, capital gains arising from any investments made after 1 April, 2023, in non-equity mutual fund schemes will not be eligible for long-term capital gains benefits. Mutual fund distributors have been spamming their HNI clientele all morning about these proposed changes so that they can lock in their investments before the new fiscal year to take advantage of the indexation benefits. P Hingar, founder at Fintoo, “This move may have a negative impact on all debt funds…We may see a shift from long-term debt funds to equity funds, and money may be directed towards sovereign gold bonds, bank fixed deposits, and non-convertible debentures in the debt category. This is good news for banks as they can attract customers with higher interest rates and increase their borrowing and saving book sizes.” Fund houses are screaming blue murder, especially the non-bank backed ones, as the amendment has come as a complete surprise. Few fund houses wanted to go on record to speak on the subject, as they feel it is a negative for the bond funds. The government is seeking to do away with the tax arbitrage that currently existed between debt funds and bank deposits. So far interest income from bank deposits have been taxed at slab rates, while investments in debt funds of a duration of over 36 months have been taxed at a long-term capital gains tax rate of 20% with indexation benefits. Indexation is nothing but a methodology that helps reduce tax burden by adjusting for inflation. Now this option will no longer be available to debt investors. Mutual funds are an unhappy lot as this takes away the added benefit that investors of debt schemes had over bank deposits. Srikanth Subramanian, CEO, Kotak Cherry said, "The amendment in the finance bill will have significant structural changes to the way we invest. For mutual funds to get investor interest, it’ll now have to purely be on their ability to add extra ‘risk adjusted returns’ and not because of any tax arbitrage.” The advantage of paying lower tax on a debt instrument like mutual fund will no longer be available to investors or savers. The playing field is now more even, believe experts. However this will benefit the corporate bond market where there will be renewed interest from retail investors, and this will also add depth to the liquidity which again will mean better pricing for the end customer, explains Subramanian. Analysts believe that this is negative for mutual funds, as debt schemes (barring liquid) contribute to 19% of AUMs and anywhere up to 14% of revenues. According to CLSA, the measure would have a moderate to low impact on profitability, as bulk of the revenue/profitability for AMCs accrues from equity assets and non-liquid debt AUMs are neither higher growth nor higher profitability segments. The measure will also not impact liquid MFs of ₹6.6 trillion materially, as they are short-term products and there is no material change in tax attractiveness. For life insurers, there appears to be no change in the taxation structure in the budget. An unintended impact of this could be felt by non-banking financial institutions that rely on mutual funds for some of their funding requirements. With flows into debt schemes slowing after this move, NBFCs may have to rely more on bank funding than mutual funds.

New Delhi, Mar 16 () Yes Bank customers will be able to access full banking services from Wednesday evening, as the moratorium will be lifted earlier. The RBI had on March 5 put a moratorium on Yes Bank restricting withdrawals to Rs 50,000 per depositor till April 3. However, the government in a notification on Saturday said the moratorium will be lifted by 18:00 hrs on March 18. "We will resume full banking services from Wed, Mar 18, 2020, 18:00 hrs. Visit any of our 1,132 branches from Mar 19, 2020, post commencement of banking hrs to experience our suite of services," Yes Bank said in a tweet. "You will also be able to access all our digital services &amp; platforms @RBI @FinMinIndia," it said. The government on Saturday notified the reconstruction plan for cash-strapped Yes Bank and said the moratorium will be lifted by 18:00 hrs on March 18, much earlier than the earlier date of April 3. "The order of moratorium on the reconstructed bank issued by the government...shall cease to have effect on the third working day at 18:00 hours from the date of commencement of this scheme," the notification said. The lender has posted a net loss of Rs 18,654 crore for third quarter ended December 31 due to huge provisioning for bad loans. It had posted a profit of Rs 1,001.8 crore during December quarter of 2018-19. "You will be able to use your YES BANK cards and accounts across wallets like Paytm, Amazon Pay and Freecharge among others from March 18, 2020, 18:00 hours," the bank said in an FAQ on its website. Besides, the customers have been allowed for inward RTGS/NEFT/IMPS based transaction services to pay for their Yes Bank credit card bills and loan EMIs from any bank accounts including Yes Bank accounts. "Outward NEFT/IMPS/RTGS will resume from March 18, 2020, 18:00 hours. The limits for transactions across digital channels will continue to remain what they were prior to the imposition of the moratorium. However, from March 19, 2020 post commencement of banking hours, transactions at branches will not have any limits," it said. Among others, customers will be able to pay towards their utility bills and use the UPI platform, Google Pay and PhonePe, Paytm, Amazon Pay, Freecharge. "You can withdraw your Yes Bank FDs (fixed deposits) and RDs (recurring deposits) after the moratorium is revoked from March 18, 2020, 18:00 hours. Standard charges will apply on the same. You will be also able to access all services available through digital channel/platforms (Net Banking/ Mobile Banking etc)," it added. Customers can also initiate "stop a payment" service, Yes Bank said. The other service that remains inactive now is cheque clearing because clearing activities are suspended as per the directive. Customers who use forex card can also not use such services.
