Deputy Assistant Attorney General Arun G Rao of the Department of Justice Civil Division's Consumer Protection Branch, along with colleagues from the Consumer Protection Branch and the FBI, met last week with CBI officials in New Delhi to discuss deepening and expanding efforts to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes and transnational call centre fraud, a shared law enforcement priority, it said. "In their meetings, the parties highlighted the continued strengthening of cooperation in combating these types of crimes that has occurred since their last meeting in October 2021, including successful efforts to secure the testimony of US victims of call centre fraud for use in enforcement proceedings against the alleged perpetrators in India, as well as the seizure of evidence and arrests of individuals in India allegedly involved in cyber-enabled financial crimes and global telemarketing frauds and identified, in part, through information provided with the assistance of U.S. law enforcement," it said. FBI, CBI officials meet to discuss cooperation on technology-based crimes

The verdict comes a few months after the accused pleaded guilty of conspiracy and fraud. Sahil Narang, a resident of Gurgaon, was in the US illegally when he was arrested in May 2019. He has been described as a ‘key participant’ in tech fraud and refund fraud – usually targeted at technologically unsophisticated computer users, who are often senior citizens. According to acting United States attorney Richard B Myrus, Narang has been sentenced to three years in prison, which will be followed by three years of supervised release. The facts of the case put forward by the US federal prosecutors state that internet pop-up advertisements were used to fool computer users into believing that their computers were affected by malware. These advertisements would make the users believe that they needed computer protection services. A number would be displayed, and when dialed, the users would be routed to call centres run by Narang. Further, these call centre operators would call the affected users to tell them they could get a refund of the amount paid. They would then say a refund has been processed to the user. To double dip, these operators would call the users again to tell them they had refunded an excess amount, and that these users would have to repay the difference. To make it seem believable, these operators would display fake bank balances on the computer screens of these users. These users would then be asked to ‘refund’ the excess money they were told they had received – essentially, the users would end up paying the fraudsters twice. Narang’s fraud scheme had a success rate of 30% According to the federal prosecutors and a nine-month investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (<keyword id="6355946" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fbi">FBI</keyword>), Narang’s fraud scheme had a success rate of 30%. Narang and others made over 70 calls per day during the investigation period, with 30% of those calls ending up in successful frauds. They put the estimate of fraud between $1.5 to $3 million. Here's how a guy from Gurugram used pop-up ads and a call centre to defraud unsuspecting Americans for up to $3 million

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Around 76 locations were raided across 12 Indian states in a crackdown on tech support scam calls.</li><li>India's Central Bureau of Investigations is working with Amazon and Microsoft to combat scammers.</li></ul>India has been cracking down on tech support scammers in an effort to "combat and dismantle" finance-related cyber crime, officials announced on Thursday.Officials raided around 76 suspected illegal call center locations across India, in several different states, according to a press release from <a href="https://twitter.com/CBIHeadquarters/status/1715013792697045503/photo/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">India's Central Bureau of Investigations</a>. These raids were part of a police operation called Chakra-II. The scammers often pretend to work for reputable companies like Microsoft and Amazon, according to a press release from <a href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/policy-news-views/amazon-microsoft-protect-against-impersonation-scams" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon</a>. Now, Amazon and Microsoft are teaming up with CBI and international law enforcement in an effort to cut down on the calls. Many of these scammers target Americans, with over 2,000 people being impacted, according to Amazon. Countries like Canada, Australia, the UK, Germany, and Spain have also been affected. Law enforcement seized 32 phones, 48 laptops and hard discs, and 33 SIM cards and froze several bank accounts amid the raid of the 76 locations, according to CBI. The locations were in Indian states including Bihar, Dehli, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The latest in their we-are-not-going-to-do-this list came when the Cupertino-based company refused to help <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by unlocking Narada News CEO’s <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword>. The series of sting operations conducted by <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/what-is/narada-sting-operation-case-everything-you-need-to-know-trinamool-congress-mamata-banerjee-4579097/">Narada</a> News in West Bengal on <keyword id="399454" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-India-Trinamool-Congress">All India Trinamool Congress</keyword> (AITC) politicians in 2011, exposed the political party’s ‘corrupt’ practices and has since been under the CBI probe. According to the latest <a href="https://www.gadgetsnow.com/tech-news/apple-says-no-to-cbi-wont-unlock-narada-ceos-iphone/articleshow/64597506.cms">reports</a>, Apple refused to share the password of Samuel’s iPhone 4s that was used to record the 28-minute long footage of AITC politicians allegedly accepting bribes. The report states that Apple got in touch with the agency through the ministry of external affairs, to inform them that it was against their policy to share ‘personal details’ of a client and that they are not willing to violate that principle. The company did confirm, however, that the footage was shot on the iPhone submitted to the agency by Samuel. Apple’s refusal essentially means that the CBI have no way to match the original footage from Samuel’s phone with the one submitted by him. The AITC had challenged the authenticity of the Narada tapes when the case came up for hearing at the <keyword id="6364869" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="calcutta-high-court">Calcutta High Court</keyword>, stating that it could not be ascertained without the original device. The CBI now have Samuel’s iPhone, but with Apple refusing to share the password, they will possibly have to figure out some other way to access the footage on the phone. This, however, isn’t Apple’s first tussle with security agencies. After a face-off with the FBI over unlocking the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2016/2/17/11036306/apple-fbi-iphone-encryption-backdoor-tim-cook">San Bernardino shooter</a> Syed Farook’s iPhone and then apparently offering to help unlock the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/8/16626452/apple-fbi-texas-shooter-iphone-unlock-encryption-debate">Texas shooter’s</a> phone, the company can’t seem to avoid controversy when it comes to security outfits and how it can and should help fight crime.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Reuters/Neil HallA shopper reaches for a box of tea in a supermarket in London.</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>British companies are already making plans to stockpile for a no-deal Brexit on October 31.</li><li>They are concerned that the UK could leave the European Union without a deal in the run-up to Christmas time, when demand for many goods - including food, clothes and medicine - rockets.</li><li>One of the UK's biggest beer companies is set to stockpile "two or three times as much" as it did in the run-up to March 29, a figure involved told Business Insider.</li><li>British businesses have already spent billions of pounds on no-deal planning.</li></ul>LONDON - British companies are planning to stockpile goods including food, clothes and medicine amid fears that a no-deal Brexit on October 31 would create the "nightmare" of severe shortages in the run-up to Christmas.Prime Minister Theresa May and other European leaders prevented the United Kingdom leaving the European Union without a deal last week <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brexit-delayed-eu-leaders-may-request-for-short-extension-2019-4?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by agreeing to delay Brexit by six months until October 31, 2019.</a>Since then, UK companies have been calculating how much money they lost preparing for a no-deal exit in the spring, after spending millions on measures like stockpiling goods and hiring staff to handle new customs checks.The Confederation of British Industry estimates that businesses collectively spent billions of pounds.Companies are now looking ahead to Halloween, and the prospect of a no-deal Brexit creating an array of costly checks on the UK-EU border just weeks before Christmas, when the demand for many goods rockets.A number companies have already started making new no-deal plans, Business Insider understands.One of the UK's biggest beer companies is set to stockpile "two of three times as much" as it did in the run-up to March 29, to ensure that it meets Christmas demand, an industry figure familiar with the plans told Business Insider."It is a nightmare on the goods side," the source said, adding that there is also the issue of almost all goods being seasonal, meaning many products that were stockpiled for a spring Brexit can't be re-used later in the year.The seasonal problem is set to affect the UK's clothing retailers."You might think things like clothes are less problematic," Pauline Bastidon, Head of Global and European Policy at the Freight Transport Association, told Business Insider this week."But fashion changes on a seasonal basis, sometimes on a monthly basis. It's still the default. Yes it's not tomorrow so we can breathe a little bit but it could definitely happen."Nicole Sykes, the CBI's Head of EU Negotiations, told Business Insider that UK companies "have spent billions on no deal planning" including stockpiling, relocations, and hiring staff to handle new customs checks.She said that while the six-month Brexit delay removed the threat of an immediate no-deal, it had not provided businesses with enough certainty to suspend no deal planning or make long-term investments in the UK."We also have to consider the impact of lost and delayed investment, especially on future job creation. British companies are planning to stockpile for the 'nightmare' of a Christmas time no-deal Brexit

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image">AP</div></div>NEW DELHI - <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s top police official apologized Wednesday for saying, "If you can't prevent <keyword id="39493" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rape">rape</keyword>, you enjoy it," a remark that has outraged women across the country.
Central Bureau of Investigation chief Ranjit Sinha made the remark Tuesday during a conference about illegal sports betting and the need to legalize gambling. The CBI, the country's premier investigative agency, is India's equivalent of the FBI.
Sinha said at the conference that if the state could not stop gambling, it could at least make some revenue by legalizing it.
"If you cannot enforce the ban on betting, it is like saying, 'If you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it,'" he said.
The remarks have caused outrage across India, which in the past year has been roiled by widespread protests following the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a bus in New Delhi.
On Wednesday, Sinha said that his comments had been taken out of context and misinterpreted, and that he was sorry if he had caused hurt.
Angry activists, however, called for his resignation.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat said Sinha's comments were offensive to women everywhere.
"It is sickening that a man who is in charge of several rape investigations should use such an analogy," Karat told reporters. "He should be prosecuted for degrading and insulting women."
The New Delhi attack on the young woman last December caused nationwide outrage and forced the government to change rape laws and create fast-track courts for rape cases. New laws introduced after the attack make stalking, voyeurism and sexual harassment a crime. They also provide for the death penalty for repeat offenders or for rape attacks that lead to the victim's death.
