Biophore <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> Pharmaceuticals on Friday said it has applied to the Drugs Controller General of India (<keyword id="172241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DCGI">DCGI</keyword>) for obtaining emergency-use approval for Aviptadil, used in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of COVID-19. The Hyderabad-based firm said it has developed the product which is backward integrated with its in-house API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient). The company plans to commence commercial production of the product immediately after the approval is received, it added. Aviptadil is a synthetic form of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) that, when administered, results in rapid clinical recovery in patients with severe SARS-COV-2 infection. These observations are based on results of multiple trials of Aviptadil against COVID-19 globally in patients with respiratory failure and the same have been submitted to DCGI for their review. "The company has developed this highly complex peptide in a very short period of time, primarily due to the extensive focus of the company in prioritising <keyword id="8764262" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> related products over the last one year," Biophore CEO Jagadeesh Babu Rangisetty said in a statement. Aviptadil is a very promising treatment option for COVID, especially in severe hospitalised cases where trials have shown a high recovery percentage, he added. "We hope to be able to quickly make it available through this approval," Rangisetty noted. Biophore was one of the first few manufacturers to have received approval for an antiviral agent, <keyword id="2739896" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="favipiravir">Favipiravir</keyword>, in the country during the first wave of COVID-19 and is also the only Indian manufacturer to be producing multi tonnage volumes of Sulfobutyl Ether beta Cyclodextrin (SBECD), which is a key excipient in the manufacturing of Remdesivir Injections. Apart from these, the company said it has invested significantly into the research and development of other anti-COVID products over the last one year. "While we are optimistic that the pandemic will end soon, we have to be prepared for the exigencies. We need to keep evaluating and adding newer products against this virus to ensure better preparedness by having more options for the treating physicians and thus avoiding shortages. Our aim is also to make the cost of treatment affordable, especially for hospitalised patients," Rangisetty said. Biophore seeks approval for Aviptadil from India's drug controller for emergency use in COVID-19 treatment

<ul><li><keyword id="8775508" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="remdesivir">Remdesivir</keyword>, steroids, plasma, <keyword id="6284162" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tocilizumab">Tocilizumab</keyword>, and Favipiravir are some of the most widely used treatments for COVID-19.</li><li>According to <keyword id="40458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIIMS">AIIMS</keyword>’ director Randeep Guleria, the timing of using these drugs — depending on the condition of a COVID-19 patient — is critical in their effectiveness.</li><li>Using them too early or too late could result in harmful side-effects.</li><li>Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) about COVID-19 drugs.</li></ul>(Disclaimer: This should not be considered medical advice. It’s been more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic has been ravaging humanity. Despite predictions that the world would be out of the woods by now, the second wave of the virus is wreaking havoc in countries everywhere, including India. As the number of cases has increased, so has the demand for the drugs that offer potential treatment. This includes everything from the overhyped Remdesivir to less known drugs like Tocilizumab and Favipiravir. These drugs, however, are in short supply. Pharmacies across the country are reporting shortages. Moreover, this has led to a boom in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/remdesivir-injection-price-jumps-five-times-as-covid-19-cases-rise/articleshow/82083414.cms">blackmarket sales</a> of these drugs. According to Randeep Guleria, director of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), these drugs aren’t just something that you can take at home. And the timing of when they should be administered is critical in ensuring that a bad situation isn’t made worse. In a press conference on April 19, Guleria answered some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) around COVID-19 and the drugs that fight it. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Here’s a quick look at his responses:" comment="subhead" text="Here’s a quick look at his responses:">Here’s a quick look at his responses:</cmsannotation> <ol><li>Is Remdesivir effective in the treatment of COVID-19? No study has conclusively been able to prove that Remdesivir is beneficial in the treatment of COVID-19. “It’s important to understand that Remdesivir is not a magic bullet and it’s not a drug that is reducing mortality,” said Guleria.</li><li>If there is not enough evidence to support the use of Remdesivir to treat COVID 19, why are doctors still prescribing it? “It [Remdesivir] does have a role,” Guleria explained. While everyone has been focused on coming up with a vaccine to fight off the pandemic, the same push has not been seen in the development of antivirals. So, in absence of a good drug that can treat COVID-19, doctors and patients are turning to Remdesivir in hopes of relief.</li><li>When should a patient of COVID 19 take Remdesivir? More important than the drug itself, is the timing of when it is administered. Taking it too early or too late, could do more harm than good.“Remdesivir has been shown to be useful only in those patients who were hospitalised, who showed oxygen saturation and had infiltrates on their chest X-ray or CT scan,” said Guleria. According to him, the optimal timing for Remdesivir is usually after five to seven days of having the virus. “It is of no use if given early to mild or asymptomatic patients,” he told the press. “It is of no use if it’s given very late because it would create a cytokine storm.” A cytokine storm is when the immune system goes into overdrive. The body starts to attack its own cells and tissues instead of just the virus.</li><li>Is Remdesivir something you can take at home? Remdesivir isn’t just a pill that you can down with a glass of water. It comes in a vial and has to be injected into the body. So, ideally, one should not be taking it at home.“It is for patients who are hospitalised and severe. Therefore it should not be given at home. It is for patients who need to be admitted and need hospital care,” said Guleria. </li><li>Are steroids effective in the treatment of COVID 19? Unlike Remdesivir, there is evidence to support the use of steroids in the treatment of COVID-19. The <keyword id="6356311" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organisation">World Health Organisation</keyword>’s (WHO) recovery trial showed that steroids do have a beneficial effect. “But again, the timing is critical. The recovery trial clearly showed that if we give steroids too early, before oxygen saturation, it showed a harmful effect. Those who got it early had higher mortality than those who did not,” warned Guleria.According to him, steroids are most effective during the later part of the disease, when there is more inflammation and oxygen saturation is falling. “Steroids are only useful for moderate or severe cases,” he said.</li><li>Is plasma a good way to fight off COVID-19? Plasma was popular when COVID-19 initially came around but studies in India, and around the world, have determined that it is not effective in the treatment. “Subsequently, other studies have been done and a large meta analysis as well which combines results of all the studies, have shown that plasma is not effective in treating COVID-19,” said Guleria.</li><li>Should a person with COVID-19 take Tocilizumab? Tocilizumab is a drug of last resort. According to Guleria, it should only be used when a COVID-19 infection in a patient is worsening despite steroids, Remdesivir, and other treatments like anticoagulants. “Tocilizumab is required in less than 2% of COVID 19 patients. Very few patients need this drug because it's only for treating a cytokine storm… And, therefore, it has a limited role,” he explained.</li><li>Is Favipiravir effective in treating COVID-19? Favipiravir is another antiviral that is being promoted for the treatment of COVID 19. It was initially doled out as a treatment of influenza after the H1N1 pandemic.“There is not enough evidence in robust studies to show that it is a good drug. In most countries, it is not being used. They’re not finding higher mortality,” said Guleria. And, since it’s not a proven treatment, India’s national guidelines also don’t recommend its use. </li><li>Is it possible to treat COVID-19 without any of the drugs mentioned above? Car maker Kia Motors India rebrands itself as Kia India

The Confederation of All India Traders (<keyword id="853920" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CAIT">CAIT</keyword>) has written to Minister for <keyword id="84" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce">Commerce</keyword> and Industry Piyush Goyal seeking action against e-commerce majors <keyword id="18635" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> over alleged supply of non-essential goods amid the <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> restrictions. "They have now started taking undue advantage of the pandemic by making illegitimate financial gains by supplying non-essential items which have been strictly prohibited by many state administrations due to ongoing lockdowns to prevent the spread of Covid-19," said the letter written by CAIT Secretary General <keyword id="361703" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Praveen-Khandelwal">Praveen Khandelwal</keyword>. The traders' body alleged that amidst the pandemic, the e-commerce players are trying to capture the market share from small traders by defining every item as essential including mobile phones and accessories. CAIT also said that the government should bring in "a new press note with clarifications with regards to what is permitted and prohibited for marketplace e-commerce entities, to expedite the process and save the industry for the ulterior motives of these foreign entities". CAIT seeks action against e-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart over alleged supply of non-essential items during COVID-19

This means all eight cameras simultaneously at 36 frames per second per camera labelling video over time. It wasn't any tool that existed for this. Elon Musk says Tesla has the 'most advanced' real-world AI in the world, as the company's profit rises 74%

Automobile major <keyword id="44883" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> on Tuesday reported a <keyword id="6354942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="decline">decline</keyword> of 9.7 per cent in <keyword id="6362247" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Profit">profit</keyword> during Q4FY21. Accordingly, the company's net profit declined to ₹1,166.1 crore from ₹1,291.7 crore reported for the same period of previous fiscal. The automobile major cited lower non-operating income owing to mark-to-market loss on invested surplus as one of the key reasons for the decline. However, during the quarter, the company's net sales increased by 33.6 per cent to ₹22,958.6 crore compared to the same period previous year. Besides, the company reported a total sales of 492,235 vehicles during the quarter which was higher by 27.8 per cent compared to the same period previous year. Furthermore, sales in the domestic market stood at 456,707 units, growing by 26.7 per cent. Similarly, exports were at 35,528 units, higher by 44.4 per cent. It may be recalled that in Quarter 4 (FY 2019-20) of the previous year there was a significant decline in the sales volume largely owing to Covid-19 lockdown. On a fiscal year basis, the company's net profit declined by 25.1 per cent to ₹4,229.7 crore from ₹5,650.6 crore reported for the same period of previous fiscal. According to the company, the decline happened on account of lower sales volume, increase in commodity prices, adverse foreign exchange movement, and lower non-operating income partially offset by lower operating expenses, and cost reduction efforts. The company's performance for the full year FY 2020-21 is to be seen in the context of Covid-19 related disruptions. In terms of sales, the company sold a total of 1,457,861 vehicles during the period, lower by 6.7 per cent compared to the previous year and lower by 21.7 per cent compared to FY 2018-19. As per the company, net sales during FY21 stood lower by 7.2 per cent to ₹66,562.1 crore compared to that in the previous year. In line with the financial performance of the year and considering uncertain business environment, the <keyword id="136326" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Board-of-Directors">Board of Directors</keyword> recommended a dividend of <keyword id="164031" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="INR">INR</keyword> 45 per share (face value of INR 5 per share) for FY 2020-21. Maruti Suzuki's net profit down by almost 10% in the last 3 months compared to a year ago

Premier of the <keyword id="60769" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Western-Australia">Western Australia</keyword> state Mark <keyword id="930062" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McGowan">McGowan</keyword> on Tuesday alleged that COVID-19 tests conducted in India for returning travellers were either inaccurate or unreliable which are impinging on the integrity of the system and causing some issues here. McGowan's remarks came after authorities in Western Australia said that four people in hotel quarantine in Perth tested positive for coronavirus following their return from India. Western Australia health authorities are concerned that the majority of returning travellers were from India where the infection has been rising alarmingly. McGowan told a local TV channel: "I have just been advised at this morning's emergency management team meeting that 78 of the 79 passengers on this flight had been in India recently". "Our expectation is the number of positive cases from this group of people will grow and potentially grow significantly. "We obviously have a problem with India. Some of the tests conducted in India either aren't accurate or aren't believable, and clearly that's causing some issues here," McGowan said. He pinpointed that the large numbers of people arriving in Australia with the virus showed the system was failing, and he questioned if all of the test results being produced by people before boarding flights were accurate. ''If there are tests that are inaccurate or a bit dodgy being produced so that people get on flights, that is impinging the integrity of the system and that is why we are suffering these problems," he said. McGown also urged people to not to travel to India unless there was an extreme emergency. "In the middle of a pandemic that is killing hundreds of thousands of people across India, there is no need to go to India for anything but the most extreme of reasons now," he said, adding "I can't think of many (reasons to be allowed to travel).'' Meanwhile, <keyword id="365819" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-Affairs">Home Affairs</keyword> Minister Karen Andrews on Tuesday said the situation in India was absolutely devastating. ''Hundreds of thousands of new cases each day, multiple deaths. I mean, it's just an awful situation...," she said. She confirmed that the government was also looking at issues such as the humanitarian support that Australia can provide to India. ''There's already been some discussions about ventilators and oxygen and how we might be able to support India. And, of course, there are issues with getting travellers back to Australia and how we can best manage that. ''There's a range of options clearly that need to be considered. Our primary responsibility is to keep Australians safe and secure. So that is our overarching responsibility. We do have obligations though to make sure that we can support Australians to come back home,'' she said. According to media reports earlier, the patient zero in Perth's latest coronavirus outbreak was a man who travelled back from India after being given an exemption to travel there for a wedding. Covaxin, India's home-grown <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword>, has been found to neutralise the 617 variant of the deadly virus, <keyword id="6356037" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="white-house">White House</keyword> chief medical adviser and America's top pandemic expert Dr Anthony Fauci said here. Fauci was speaking to reporters during a conference call on Tuesday. "This is something where we're still gaining data on a daily basis. But the most recent data, was looking at convalescent Sera of COVID-19 cases and people who received the vaccine used in India, the Covaxin. It was found to neutralise the 617 variants," he said. "So, despite the real difficulty that we're seeing in India, vaccination could be a very, very important antidote against this," Fauci added. The <keyword id="53556" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York-Times">New York Times</keyword> on Tuesday said Covaxin works by teaching the immune system to make antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The antibodies attach to viral proteins, such as the so-called spike proteins that stud its surface. Developed by <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> in partnership with National Institute of Virology and the <keyword id="6364555" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Council-of-Medical-Research">Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword>, Covaxin was approved for emergency use on January 3. Trial results later showed the vaccine has an efficacy of 78 per cent. Responding to a question, Dr Andy Slavitt, White House COVID-19 Response Senior Advisor, said that a strike team from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is headed over to India to help coordinate this response. "We are making sure that we are locating some of the raw materials necessary to create more vaccines in India, which I think is going to be an important help there," he said. "We stand with the country of India during this very trying and tragic surge. We are working to deploy resources and supplies, including therapeutics, rapid testing kits, ventilators, PPE, and raw materials, that are needed to manufacture vaccines in India, and the <keyword id="6379474" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cdc">CDC</keyword>, which has a long history of working with and in India on public health measures, will be deploying a strike team to the country to support the public health efforts there," Slavitt said. Given the strong portfolio of approved, highly effective and safe vaccines here in the United States, the administration is looking at options to share AstraZeneca vaccines with other countries as they become available. This should amount to around 60 million doses or so over the next two months, he added. "The AstraZeneca vaccine is highly safe and effective, and approved in many parts of the world, and since it is not approved for use in the US, we do not need to use the AstraZeneca vaccine here during the next few months," Slavitt said. An administrator of a WhatsApp group cannot be held criminally liable for an <keyword id="1112268" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="objectionable-post">objectionable post</keyword> by another member of the group, the Nagpur bench of the <keyword id="48485" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> has held and quashed a case of sexual harassment lodged against a 33-year-old man. The order was passed last month and a copy of it was made available on April 22. A division bench headed by Justice Z A Haq and A B Borkar noted that an administrator of a WhatsApp group has only limited powers of adding or deleting members to the group and does not have the power to regulate or censor the content posted in the group. The court passed its order on an application filed by Kishor Tarone (33), the administrator of a WhatsApp group. He was seeking to quash the case registered against him in Gondia district in 2016 under Sections 354-A(1)(iv) (making sexually coloured remarks), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) and 107 (abetment) of the <keyword id="6360844" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipc">IPC</keyword> and Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the <keyword id="6433641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act">Information Technology Act</keyword>. As per the prosecution, Tarone failed to take action against a member of his WhatsApp group who used filthy and indecent language against a woman member in the group. It was alleged that the applicant, being the group administrator, did not remove or delete the member from the group and also did not asked him to apologise. The bench in its order said the crux of the matter is whether an administrator of a WhatsApp group can be held criminally liable for objectionable posts made by a member of the group. Noting the functioning of the messaging service app, the court said, "Group administrators, as they are generally called, are the ones who create the group by adding or deleting members. Every chat group has one or more administrators." A group administrator has only limited power of removing a member from the group or adding other members to the group, it said. "Once the group is created, the functioning of the administrator and that of the members is at par with each other, except the power of adding or deleting members to the group," the court said. "The administrator of a WhatsApp group does not have the power to regulate, moderate or censor the content before it is posted on the group," the HC said. But, if a member of the group posts any content, which is actionable under law, such a person can be held liable, the court said. "In the absence of a special penal provision creating vicarious liability, an administrator of a WhatsApp group cannot be held liable for objectionable content posted by a member of a group unless it is shown that there was common intention or pre-arranged plan," the court said in its order. The HC quashed and set aside the <keyword id="6358015" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fir">FIR</keyword> lodged against Tarone and the subsequent charge sheet filed against him.
