<ul><li><keyword id="3167814" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="brown-dwarfs">Brown dwarfs</keyword> are also called ‘almost <keyword id="6370911" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stars">stars</keyword>’ or ‘failed stars’ because they’re bigger than most planets but not heavy enough to set themselves on fire.</li><li>They’re born spinning and can rotate upwards of 300,000 kilometres per hour.</li><li>However, scientists at the <keyword id="107353" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Aeronautics-and-Space-Administration">National Aeronautics and Space Administration</keyword> (<keyword id="6360409" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword>) believe that brown dwarfs are subject to a speed limit — going any faster would mean falling apart.</li></ul>Brown dwarfs, also called ‘almost stars’ or ‘failed stars’, can spin as fast as 300,000 kilometres per hour (kmph) or more. But the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) believes there may be a limit to how fast they can go. But, three of the most rapidly rotating ultra-cool brown dwarfs observed to date — T7, L3.5 and L8 — all take just over an hour to complete one rotation.<br /><br />According to NASA’s study published in <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2103.01990.pdf">Astronomical Journal</a>, this is more than just a coincidence. As they cool down and contract, they start to speed up.<br /><br />So, one could assume that the faster a brown dwarf is spinning, the closer it is to death. However, the three brown dwarfs observed in the study aren’t the same age or at the same point in their development cycle. <br /><br />One is a warm brown dwarf, the other is cold, while the third falls somewhere in between. The faster the object spins, the higher the centripetal force. It’s the reason why rides at the amusement park have seat belts — to keep riders from getting thrown away from their seats. <br /><br />When it comes to stars and planets, spinning too fast can mean getting torn apart. However, before that point comes, the cosmic entity is likely to start bulging around its midsection as it succumbs to the pressure. This is what scientists call oblation. <br /><br />In our own system, Saturn is already showing signs of oblation. Its speed is one rotation every 10.2 hours — similar to how fast Jupiter takes a turn despite being only 0.3 times Jupiter’s mass. <br /><br /><div type="image" title="brown dwarfs" msid="81963479" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Brown dwarfs are more massive than planets but not quite as massive as stars. Generally speaking, they have between 13 and 80 times the mass of Jupiter. A brown dwarf becomes a star if its core pressure gets high enough to start nuclear fusion.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />This doesn’t necessarily mean that Saturn’s ready to fall apart — but NASA isn’t sure why. The scientists have not yet been able to pinpoint the exact cosmic forces that may be acting as natural braking mechanisms, but scientists know that they are there.<br /><br />“It would be pretty spectacular to find a brown dwarf rotating so fast it is tossing its atmosphere out into space,” said Megan Tannock, lead author of the study. “But so far, we haven’t found such a thing. I think that must mean that either something is slowing the brown dwarfs down before they hit that extreme or that they can’t get that fast in the first place.”<br /><br />The full picture is yet to reveal itself. Further research may reveal whether there’s some braking mechanism that stops brown dwarfs from self-destruction. 'Failed stars' may have a cosmic speed limit to how fast they can spin — otherwise they'll break apart

<ul><li>Scientists have found two new habitable planets, nearly 8 times the size of Earth, that don’t orbit a ‘Goldilocks’ star.</li><li>These are the closest candidates to Earth to support human life on another planet.</li><li>A year on, these red dwarf stars orbiting Super-Earths would only last a little over 100 days.</li></ul>Finding a planet other than Earth to support human life is astronomy’s moonshot project. Two new ‘Super-Earths’ — that don’t orbit a ‘Goldilocks’ star — could be potential candidates.<br /><br />GJ180D and GJ229A are nearly eight times the size of Earth will have shorter years. They are the closest planets to Earth that could be capable of supporting life, according to a new study published in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4365/ab5e7c">The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series</a>. <br /><br />

<br /><br /><strong>Earth’s closest alternatives <br /></strong>GJ229A and GJ180D orbit two different stars. One is 19 light-years away and the other is at a distance of 40 light-years, respectively. Since these planets are so close to Earth, they can be the next <a href="https://carnegiescience.edu/news/cold-neptune-and-two-temperate-super-earths-found-orbiting-nearby-stars">prime targets</a> for observations by space and land-based telescopes.<br /><br />They’re also much bigger. GJ229A is 7.9 times the size of our planet while GJ180D is 7.5 times bigger. Their size is why scientists categorise them as ‘Super-Earths’.<br /><br />However, the length of a year on each planet is nearly one-third of how long a year would be on Earth. On GJ229A, it would only last 122 days and be even shorter on GJ180D of around 102 days.<br /><br /><strong>Red dwarf stars aren’t ‘just right’ but can still support life<br /></strong>Scientists describe ‘Goldilocks’ stars as stars which are the perfect temperature to host life on planets nearby. However, every star is different and there is no right answer.<br /><br />Even, the Sun — a yellow dwarf G-type main-sequence star — isn’t a <keyword id="8569735" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="goldilocks-star">Goldilocks star</keyword>, yet life thrives on Earth. In the case of the newly discovered Super-Earths, they orbit red dwarf stars, also not considered to be ideal.<br /><br />Only K-dwarf stars, that fall somewhere in between the Sun and red dwarfs, are considered to be the perfect contenders.<br /><br />However, there is one key difference between these Super-Earths orbiting a <keyword id="3151282" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="red-dwarf-star">red dwarf star</keyword> and other planets found orbiting similar stars — they’re not caught in a tidal lock. <br /><br />“This is similar to how our Moon is tidally locked to Earth, meaning that we only ever see one side of it from here. As a result, these exoplanets are a very cold permanent night on one side and very hot permanent day on the other—not good for habitability,” explains Fabo Feng, lead author of the study.<br /><br />Therefore, the Super-Earths don’t take the same amount of time to spin around their axis as they do to orbit around their respective stars.<br /><br />“GJ180d is the nearest temperate super-Earth to us that is not tidally locked to its star, which probably boosts its likelihood of being able to host and sustain life,” explains Fabo Feng, lead author of the study.<br /><br /><strong>A new way to find habitable Earth-like planets in the universe<br /></strong>These new worlds were discovered using the radial velocity method. This process doesn’t only look at how a planet orbits a star, but also the planet’s gravity might be affected by the star in return.<br /><br />The resulting wobble in the star’s orbit can be detected from Earth using advanced instruments — like the Carnegie Planet Finder Spectrograph (PFS), High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) — which were used to find GJ180D and GJ229A.<br /><br />The research team detected another planet in the fray — GJ433D. However, despite being the size of Neptune, it’s a little too far from its star to be the right temperature. Two new planets 8-times the size of Earth could support life — and they're right next-door

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>I visited Dollywood's sister theme park, Silver Dollar City, in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri.</strong></li><li><strong>I was blown away by its high-quality entertainment and coasters, amazing food, and friendly staff.</strong></li></ul><p>One of my favorite <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-amusement-parks-underrated-2019-1">hidden-gem theme parks</a> is Silver Dollar City, nestled in the Ozark Mountains in Branson, Missouri.</p><p>It's a sister park to one of my other favorites, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-things-about-dollywood-theme-park-photos-2022-3">Dollywood</a>. Both are owned by Herschend Family Entertainment, though Silver Dollar City opened first in 1960.</p><p>The park is a true hidden gem. First of all, it's an incredible value. Its highest-tier season pass currently costs under $300, and a one-day park ticket is under $100. For context, daily access to only one Disney park usually starts at $150 — and the most basic <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-world-annual-pass-live-far-away-worth-it-2024-3">seasonal pass to Disney World</a> is typically over $1,400.</p><p>The park itself is just great, too. I've visited <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-disney-world-compares-to-other-popular-theme-parks-us">theme parks all over the world</a> and this now ranks as one of my favorites. Here's why I fell in love during my recent visit.</p><h2><strong>The park leans heavily into its old-school mountain-town theme</strong></h2><div type="image" title="People making sweets at Browns Candy Factory " height="3024" width="4032" msid="109508032" hostid="261" sizebytes="910526"></div><p>Themed to resemble an 1880s mountain village, Silver Dollar City had an authentic feel thanks to the local, multigenerational craftsmen who work in the park throughout its shops and streets.</p><p>The atmosphere felt both immersive and transportive as I discovered unique shopping opportunities, like hand-carved furniture, glass-blown home décor, and homemade candy.</p><div type="image" title="Photo of Silver Dollar City " height="2533" width="4031" msid="109508034" hostid="261" sizebytes="1433432"></div><p>Demonstrations were a big part of my experience, and I got to watch people altering leather, carving wood, and blowing glass — all things I'd never seen done in a theme park before.</p><p>Even the park's main guide, The Pathfinder, was themed.</p><div type="image" title="Entrance to Silver Dollar City " height="2268" width="3024" msid="109508035" hostid="261" sizebytes="721872"></div><p>It's designed to look like an old-school newspaper and contains a map, showtimes, and information on current events.</p><h2><strong>It's also built on top of a cave, which visitors can tour</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Cave at Silver Dollar City " height="3024" width="4032" msid="109508036" hostid="261" sizebytes="1200508"></div><p>The park is built on top of one of the oldest attractions in the area, Marvel Cave. Theme-park admission includes a tour of the caves, which was incredible.</p><p>We traveled 300 feet down into the limestone cave for a stunning view of the Cathedral Room, one of the largest cave rooms in the country.</p><h2><strong>The park is also home to some of my favorite roller coasters and a lot of unique attractions</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Silver Dollar City roller coast" height="3024" width="4032" msid="109508037" hostid="261" sizebytes="1443548"></div><p>The park blends its history with the future in the form of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-theme-parks-us-cedar-point-ohio-disney-world-2022-12">precedent-setting roller coasters</a>.</p><p>My favorites include Outlaw Run, one of the steepest wooden coasters in the world, and Time Traveler, one of the steepest, tallest, and fastest spinning coasters in the world.</p><p>There are also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cool-facts-about-all-the-disney-world-rides">unique attractions</a> at Silver Dollar City that I haven't experienced anywhere else — Grandfather's Mansion was one of my favorites.</p><div type="image" title="Grandfathers Mansion at Silver Dollar City" height="2829" width="3650" msid="109508038" hostid="261" sizebytes="637082"></div><p>Grandfather's Mansion is a classic fun-house-style walkthrough attraction that's been at the park for decades. It was pure fun playing with my senses through different rooms in the mansion, including an upside-down room and an off-balance room.</p><p>But above all, my favorite attraction is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.silverdollarcity.com/theme-park/attractions/rides/new-fire-in-the-hole/">Fire in the Hole</a>. The current reiteration pays homage to the original over-50-year-old indoor dark coaster. In its newer version, the $30 million attraction combines the nostalgia of the original with the technology of today.</p><p>The ride is of a high quality I don't see often outside of Disney or Universal parks.</p><h2><strong>The food is fantastic and unique</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Succatash at Rivertown Smokehouse at Silver Dollar City" height="3024" width="4032" msid="109508039" hostid="261" sizebytes="328698"></div><p>I'm a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epcot-world-showcase-best-things-to-get-photos-2022-4">big foodie</a> — especially at theme parks — and I was happy this park's eats lived up to the hype.</p><p>Silver Dollar City has the usual theme-park offerings, like hamburgers and hot dogs, but also offers many unique bites like its famous cinnamon bread and hand-twisted pretzels.</p><p>One of my favorite eateries on the property was Rivertown Smokehouse, which served some of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-barbecue-restaurant-bbq-every-state-yelp">best barbecue I've ever had</a>.</p><p>Visitors could watch staff smoke and carve food right in front of them in the open-air kitchen. I really enjoyed the smoked turkey and succotash and their accompanying sauces.</p><p>I also liked stopping at Eva &amp; Delilah's, the bakery located by the park's exit, to pick up homemade treats on the way home.</p><h2><strong>The entertainment was outstanding</strong></h2><p>Tons of shows and events were happening at Silver Dollar City during my visit. The park brings in national acts throughout the year for different musical festivals — and access to these performances is included with regular park tickets.</p><p>I really enjoyed the park's iconic Silver Dollar City Saloon comedy show, which has been entertaining guests for over 50 years.</p><div type="image" title="Women sitting on stage at saloon Silver Dollar City" height="3024" width="4032" msid="109508040" hostid="261" sizebytes="1875376"></div><p>During my visit, the park was also offering a Broadway-style musical production of A Dickens' Christmas Carol. Housed in a full-scale theater, the show blew me away and was comparable to national productions I've seen.</p><div type="image" title="A Dickens Christmas Carol performance at Silver Dollar City " height="3024" width="4032" msid="109508041" hostid="261" sizebytes="519188"></div><p>I was also impressed by An Old Time Christmas, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-disney-world-compares-to-other-popular-theme-parks-us">theme park's seasonal event</a>. It was unlike any Christmas event I've experienced at a theme park.</p><p>In addition to having seasonal foods and shows, the park had millions of lights and hundreds of decorated trees. It felt incredibly festive, and I loved walking around.</p><h2><strong>Every staff member I interacted with in the park was incredibly friendly and kind</strong></h2><p>I've visited theme parks all over the world, but I've yet to meet staff members as friendly as the ones at Silver Dollar City. </p><p>Many of the longtime employees were almost like characters in themselves, with throngs of guests waiting to meet and chat with them.</p><p>A highlight of my visit was meeting June Ward, who heads up the park's candy store, Brown's Candy Factory. She's worked at the park for over 50 years.</p><h2><strong>My visit was comparable on all levels to Disney, and I can't wait to return</strong></h2><p>Silver Dollar City checks all the boxes for me: high levels of theming, great attractions, fantastic food, and friendly staff.</p><p>I loved all the rides, especially the roller coasters, but I especially enjoyed exploring the shops and eating unique bites. This is a really special place that's different from any other park, and I plan to return year after year.</p><p>With its location in the touristy area of Branson there's so much to do locally — including seeing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dolly-parton-stampede-dinner-show-food-review-photos-2023-1">Dolly Parton's Stampede dinner show</a> — that it makes for a great theme-park vacation far more unique than the typical visit to Disney.</p>

Risinger/European Southern Observatory</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Astronomers have discovered not one, not two, but <em>three</em> new Earth-like planets that may be the most promising places yet to look for signs of alien life.</p><p>What's more, they're not circling a sun-like star.</p><p>Instead they all tightly orbit what's called a brown dwarf star in our galactic backyard, just 40 light-years away.</p><p>"These are the first Earth-sized planets with the potential for habitability," astrophysicist and co-discovered Michael Gillon told Tech Insider, adding that his team was "amazed, completely amazed" when they found the far-out worlds.</p><p>Gillion and his colleagues, who announced their discovery on Monday in the <a href="http://nature.com/articles/doi:10.1038/nature17448">journal Nature</a>, spotted the planetary triad by using the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in La Silla, Chile.</p><p>When the planets passed between their small sun and Earth, the star's light slightly dimmed - and the telescope recorded the signals.</p><p>"So far, the existence of such 'red worlds' orbiting ultra-cool dwarf stars was purely theoretical, but now we have not just one lonely planet around such a faint red star but a complete system of three planets," study co-author Emmanuel Jehin said <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/usa/news/eso1615/#1">in a press release</a> by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which runs TRAPPIST.</p><h2>3 strange new worlds</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.eso.org/public/usa/news/eso1615/#1">European Southern Observatory</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The planets orbit a star dubbed TRAPPIST-1 (named after the telescope). It's roughly the size of Jupiter and considerably smaller than our sun.</p><p>The star isn't bright white like the sun. It's called a brown dwarf because it emits a lot of infrared light, which falls slightly outside the range of what humans can see. And the star isn't quite technically a star - rather, it's a <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/starsgalaxies/brown_dwarf_detectives.html">big hot ball of gas</a> that never got around to fusing hydrogen.</p><p>Standing on one of the planets' surfaces and looking up would be quite dramatic. "If we were there, we would see it as red and quite big in the sky," Gillon said.</p><p>The sun would appear larger because the planets are so much closer to their star than we are to ours, the red sun would also appear much larger in the sky. It takes Earth takes a year to complete its orbit, for example, but the innermost newly discovered planet circles TRAPPIST-1 in just 1.5 Earth days, and the next-closest in 2.4 days.</p><p>Since the dwarf star is several thousand degrees Kelvin cooler than the sun, however, the planets aren't as hot as they would be in our system.</p><h2>Inside the 'Goldilocks Zone'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.eso.org/public/usa/news/eso1615/#1">M. Kornmesser/European Southern Observatory</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Researchers believe that at least two of the planets orbit in the habitable or "<a href="http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2003/02oct_goldilocks/">Goldilocks</a>" zone around their star.</p><p>The habitable zone is the area around a star where an orbiting planet receives neither too much nor too little light and heat, making the planet "just right" for liquid water to exist.</p><p>The inner two planets are almost certainly within the habitable range. The orbital path of the third planet, however, is less well-known, and may sit outside the habitable zone - meaning it could be too cold to host life as we know it. It's also unclear how long it takes this third planet to make a complete orbit.</p><p>All three worlds are roughly the size of Earth and Venus. Based on this size, Gillon and his colleagues believe their surfaces are probably solid and rocky.</p><p>Scientists also think the planets are "tidally locked." This means that, like our moon - but unlike the Earth - they don't spin on their axes. One side of each planet is always facing its sun, and the other is always in darkness.</p><p>On the day sides, the heat from the sun would probably evaporate any water, but the dark sides of the closer two planets, Gillon said, might be cool enough to allow water to stay liquid.</p><h2>A good star system to call home?</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.eso.org/public/usa/news/eso1615/#1">M. Kornmesser/European Southern Observatory</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>NASA scientist Martin Still is a little more skeptical.</p><p>He thinks that the planets are probably "long shots" for life on Earth, emphasizing that just being in the habitable zone doesn't necessarily mean they have all the necessary ingredients for life - and it certainly doesn't mean they're inhabited.</p><p>"They're just not quite the right temperatures," Still told Tech Insider. "They're just slightly too warm." The inner two planets, he added, get pummeled with roughly two to four times as much radiation as Earth.</p><p>"There are other planets that we know of which are within their habitable zones around stars which are a lot closer to our own nature, with sizes similar to Earth," he said. But these, he thinks, are too far to examine with existing technology.</p><p>The cool dwarf is 40 light years away, in the constellation of Aquarius.</p><h2>Detecting life in alien atmospheres</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.eso.org/public/usa/news/eso1615/#1">International Astronomical Union/European Southern Observatory</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>While current technology can't yet tell us the composition of the planets' atmosphere, Gillon hopes that we might be able to detect the signature elements of life as we know it - oxygen, methane, and water, for example - in their air within the next decade.</p><p>The next step, Gillon said, will be using the next generation of satellites - including NASA's upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, which is set to launch in 2018. It will help the Search for Planets Eclipsing Ultra-cool Stars (SPECULOOS), an international collaborative project studying planets that may be around cool stars like this, which astronomers think make up about 15% of all nearby objects in the night sky - <a href="https://www.ras.org.uk/news-and-press/224-news-2013/2357-the-galaxys-ancient-brown-dwarf-population-revealed">about 70 billion</a> in the Milky Way alone.</p><p>Gillon hopes his team might use light to reveal the planets' atmospheric compositions in as little as two years, then start testing for biogenic signatures within the next decade.</p><p>He said he believes that we could discover signs of life on these bizarre planets, or other planets like them discovered in future.</p><p>"I'm optimistic," he said. "I think life is not something that's a miracle on Earth.
