The cost-of-living crisis reminds us that green products need to be affordable for sustainability to become mainstream. Brands that offer sustainable options that are affordable will be favored.” Actor and entrepreneur Alia Bhatt’s kidswear company Ed-a-mamma has done just that – it has managed to bring down the price point of its sustainable clothes. Ed-a-Mamma’s clothes are priced in the range of ₹399 to ₹1,899. If more brands bring their prices down and focus on giving back to consumers, sustainability could see greater adoption in the country, which Ed-a-Mamma’s business head Iffat Jivan believes is challenging but possible. “If [sustainable] brands are … more affordable, there is no reason why somebody would not want to buy a product that is sustainable because you're actually contributing towards the planet, towards the environment, and at the same time, you are not burning a hole in your pocket,” Jivan told Business Insider India. Why are sustainable clothes expensive? Sustainable garments are made from organic fibers – free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and causing zero harm to mother earth – that are hard to source. This is why sustainable clothes tend to be more expensive as the cost is passed on to the consumers. Ed-a-Mamma sources all its organic fibers from India, which has helped the brand price its clothes in the same range as fast-fashion products. “If you have to churn out a regular product, it is probably 1/10th of the effort that you would put in the sourcing of a sustainable product. So people [brands] are taking an upcharge for their efforts. In our case, our effort is more towards the environment. Price should come down if people do take the same route that we have taken,” shared Jivan. When a sustainable brand operates on a smaller scale, reaching a cost-effective pricing strategy becomes a challenge. However, Jivan is optimistic that the industry will change when brands take matters into their own hands. “I can tell you for sure [affordable sustainable fashion] is not something that's not achievable. People today want to be paid for the effort that they're putting into bringing that product outright, we have taken that onus on ourselves and we're passing the benefit on to the customer. That is something that would come from the brand mindset. It's definitely achievable. You just need to want to do it badly enough to kind of pass it on to the customer and work for the larger cause,” Jivan told Business Insider. Alia Bhatt’s brainchild Born during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in October 2020, Alia Bhatt’s Ed-a-Mamma is one of the first brands in the sustainable kidswear category. “This was actually Alia’s last dream and her concept where she wanted to educate kids about an alternate lifestyle that was possible. Talk to parents and kids directly because Alia strongly feels that catching kids young, and giving them options of an alternate lifestyle would probably sow the seeds of being a little more conscious of the environment,” said Jivan. Ed-a-Mamma marked its offline presence this quarter by launching 16 retail stores, spread across India’s metro cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad and is now focusing on expanding its product categories. “We've shown a little over 10x growth over the last 18 months. We've now also moved into the brick and mortar space,” said Jivan. “Last year, we clocked around seven lakh pieces (in sales). This year, the number is definitely going to more than double because we've added on a lot of categories. This year we're looking at at least crossing maybe 20 lakh pieces,” added Jivan. Ed-a-Mamma is currently valued at ₹200 crores. The sustainable fashion industry is currently valued at around $24 billion in India, Jivan said and she believes that this is just a fraction of the industry’s full potential. As more Indians embrace sustainable fashion in the years to come, the industry will only get bigger and better, she added.

Bobble AI report is based on over 50 million smartphone users’ (in 640+ Indian cities) data processed in a privacy-compliant manner. It also revealed that while tier 1 cities dominate the fashion festival figures, transactions in tier 2 cities like Jaipur, Guwahati, Lucknow, Kochi, Mysore, and Bhubaneswar are at an all-time high – up 82% over the previous year. Apart from that, the majority of consumers are between the ages of 26 and 35 accounting for 37%, and between the ages of 18 and 25, accounting for 26% with 72% males and 28% females. According to the data intelligence company’s survey on the state of eCommerce in India, which was conducted across Tier 1, 2 and 3, beauty e-commerce apps usage grew by 64%, whereas fashion e-commerce grew by 368% over the past year. The festive period has only led the two e-commerce domains to skyrocket, with at least two transactions completed by shopaholics during the fashion festivals. In an interesting insight highlighted by the study, India’s fashion e-commerce industry has transformed from ‘Monopoly’ to ‘Ludo.’ Fashion giant Myntra faced tough competition from its competitive counterparts, Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq. While almost 46% of all transactions belonged to Myntra during the 2020 festive period, Ajio bagged around 69% of all transactions in 2021. The share of Myntra’s active users, also using Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq has also increased significantly, indicating how users are exploring multiple options this year. The battle of the e-commerce legends, Amazon, and Flipkart is worth noting, with Flipkart’s active user base rising 83% in 2021 online shopping festival compared to Amazon’s 72%. Despite the fact that Flipkart is dominating in terms of engagement metrics like search frequency and active sessions, Amazon is winning in terms of transactions, significantly less average session times. Think again. Bharat has gone high-end, and now most cities be it Baroda, Budaun, Indore, Nagpur or Udaipur — are where mall developers are crowding to. In with the trend are not just Indian brands but foreign brands want to go where they see ‘growth’. "Even though growth in Tier 1 cities has not yet exhausted, Tier 2 cities are growing much faster. At present, 40 out of our 100 stores are in Tier 2 cities. Provided the right locations come up in these cities, we will look at more stores in these cities," Ritesh Mishra, MD of Marks and Spencer Reliance India told Business Insider India. Yet another UK based fashion retailer Pepe Jeans India also said that it plans to open around 30 new stores every year. Of that, a majority would be in smaller cities. “We have not covered many Tier 2 cities, and they also provide higher avenues to growth,” said Manish Kapoor, CEO &amp; MD of Pepe Jeans India told Business Insider India. Thanks to exposure to the internet, the small town consumers are just as fashion forward as their metro consumers. “Their exposure to brands, fashions and international styles is on par with the metro consumers,” said Kapoor. Online presence also helps these brands service many more pin codes across the country. Mishra agrees, and adds that there is not much of a difference between the consumers in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities except that the basket value in the smaller cities may be a tad lower. They also intend to reach more pin codes via e-commerce, taking their style and substance to all of India that wants it. For a long time, smaller cities have been smaller markets for large brands. But what’s changed in the last few years, the number of middle income households are changing. Their incomes are growing on-par too. According to consumer insights company Kantar, all-India urban average monthly household income has been growing at 8.4% for the last five years. In Tier 2 and tier 3 cities, it has been growing a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8%. More money to spend The discretionary wallet share of a smaller city consumer is also higher, argues Kapoor. “For example, take a person who earns ₹1 lakh per month in Bombay, he or she would spend ₹40,000-45,000 on rent and then some more on commuting and other essentials. Then take a person who earns ₹50,000 pm in Lucknow — all the aforesaid expenses will be under ₹25,000,” he explains. Moreover, the new generation of consumers – be it millennials or GenZs – are focussed on experiences, consumption and self-care.
