The company is appealing US Magistrate Zia Faruqi's <a href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/21069005/gambia-v-facebook.pdf">September mandate</a> that said Facebook must disclose records from the company's private investigation into its role in the systematic mass executions of Rohingya civilians by the Myanmar military. Faruqi's order also asked Facebook to release content posted by accounts affiliated or suspected of being affiliated with Myanmar officials."Locking away the requested content would be throwing away the opportunity to understand how disinformation begat genocide of the Rohingya," Faruqi wrote in the ruling. The tech giant argued that disclosing internet users' private content would violate federal <keyword id="11899820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law" source="Orion">law</keyword> under the Stored Communications Act, adding that fulfilling such a request would create "grave human rights concerns of its own."The appeal specified that Facebook would comply with requests to "produce relevant public information and non-content metadata."In a statement to Insider, Rafael Frankel, Facebook's Director of South and Southeast Asia Policy, said: "We support <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international" source="Orion">international</keyword> efforts to bring accountability for atrocity crimes committed against the Rohingya people. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Olivia Fitzpatrick, 29, has $7,000 in student debt in Australia, but she's not too worried about it.</li><li>Under the repayment system, she doesn't have to pay the loans until she reaches a certain income.</li></ul>This story is part of a series called "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/millennial-world" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Millennial World</a>," which seeks to examine the state of the generation around the globe.In the US, it's common for Americans to have six-figure student-debt burdens. In Australia, that hasn't been the norm.Olivia Fitzpatrick, 29, has just over 10,000 Australian dollars, or about $6,790, in student debt — and even as a financial educator on social media, it's not a concern for her. That's because her loans are part of the Higher Education Contribution plan in the Higher Education Loan Program, or HECs-HELP, which ensures borrowers do not have to begin repaying their debt until they reach a certain income threshold — and during that time, the loans do not accrue any interest. "I did consider paying it off early, however, it is not my priority at this point," Fitzpatrick told Insider. "I have a mortgage, am renovating my property, and invest regularly into the stock market, so for me, I am very happy to continue paying it down pretax, as I never see that money anyway. If I started earning significantly more over the next year, I would consider paying off the debt just for the feeling of having no student debt and also more cash flow from working."Fitzpatrick said her student-loan balance was around AU$30,000 when she graduated in 2017 with a double degree in history and theology and started teaching at two universities in Melbourne. Thanks to the lack of interest accrual on HECs-HELP loans, Fitzpatrick's balance only grew slightly due to <a href="https://www.studyassist.gov.au/paying-back-your-loan/loan-indexation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indexation</a>, in which the balance is adjusted every year on June 1 to align with the current cost of living. She also started paying off the loans immediately when she began her entry-level teaching job, in which she was making around AU$64,000. The repayment income threshold for the 2022-2023 school year is AU$48,361, and <a href="https://www.studyassist.gov.au/paying-back-your-loan/loan-repayment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the various levels of repayment</a>, about 3.5% of her income is going toward her student loans."I honestly think many people don't notice their student-loan repayments coming out or really consider the impact of how it's reducing their cash flow and may continue to," Fitzpatrick said. "I really think more education around HECs-HELP in Australia is required to help people understand the debt they are taking on and how this can impact them. It does not seem to be a huge conversation here like it is in the US, which in a way is a good thing because perhaps that demonstrates it's not a huge burden on getting on financially, but I believe it also encourages lots of continuous study for limited reward in some cases."While working now as a teacher, Fitzpatrick is also building an <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@hermoneysworth?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">online financial-education community</a> that she described as a "side hustle." She said she doesn't have any regrets about taking on student loans because it was a "great return on investment" for her."I am, however, thankful that I did not do any further study as I have been encouraged to multiple times by different people within and outside the workplace," she said. "I think more of a conversation needs to be had about whether your degree or further study will actually lead you to a better outcome, career-wise or financially."<h2>Australian student-debt loads are on the rise</h2>Fitzpatrick said she's found the Australian student-loan system to be "quite fair," and that "from an outsider perspective, it does seem like student-loan debt in America completely takes over people's lives and debt for many, many years. I do not believe it is the same situation for most Australians, therefore the conversation is not as large."But that could soon change for many Australians. Currently, 3 million Australians collectively owe about A$74 billion in student debt, with an average balance of AU$24,000 — and that's set to climb due to the new 7.1% indexation rate, the highest in decades. One Melbourne millennial borrower <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jun/01/falling-behind-australian-graduates-fear-for-their-future-as-record-high-student-loan-indexation-kicks-in#:~:text=The%20average%20amount%20of%20student,in%20the%20past%20three%20years." target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Guardian</a> that she graduated in 2018 with A$27,000 in student debt, and while she's paid off $2,900 of it since, her total balance has only gone down by $300 due to indexation."I've hardly made a dent to my debt," she said. "And with the new indexation rate, it'll increase and I'll end up with a larger debt."This is a dilemma American student-loan borrowers are all too familiar with. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-interest-coming-back-student-loan-debt-relief-biden-2023-6">Due to interest capitalization</a> on federally held student loans, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stories-of-student-loan-debt-hamster-wheel-borrowers-cant-escape-2022-1">many borrowers that </a><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stories-of-student-loan-debt-hamster-wheel-borrowers-cant-escape-2022-1">Insider has spoken to</a> have been stuck in a cycle of repayment because interest continues to accrue on their principal balances, leaving them with much more debt than they signed on for.And while the repayment systems in the US and Australia differ, the growing balances have lawmakers in both countries concerned. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/will-supreme-court-block-student-loan-debt-forgiveness-major-takeaways-2023-2">American student-loan borrowers are awaiting the fate</a> of President Joe Biden's plan to forgive up to $20,000 in student debt for federal borrowers, and Mehreen Faruqi, a senator for the Greens party in New South Wales, has pushed for debt relief following the latest indexation hike."Refusing to act is negligent and just plain cruel," she <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jun/01/falling-behind-australian-graduates-fear-for-their-future-as-record-high-student-loan-indexation-kicks-in#:~:text=The%20average%20amount%20of%20student,in%20the%20past%20three%20years." target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. "If the government refuses to provide a reprieve, the Greens will absolutely make this an election issue."When considering the student-loan forgiveness conversation in Australia and abroad, Fitzpatrick said it's something that she'd "love" to happen."But I also understand that potentially there's more important things for the government to spend that money on rather than wiping my debt, which is relatively small and only comes out of my income when I am earning enough to repay it," she said. "I do, however, acknowledge those people who have much larger debts or are not using their degree or earning the threshold to actually start to repay it may feel quite differently."

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:374px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://www.faruqilaw.com">www.faruqilaw.com</a></div>Wall Street plaintiffs' firm Faruqi &amp; Faruqi has filed a <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/133652345/Faruqi-Counterclaim">defamation lawsuit</a> against a former Faruqi lawyer who says a partner harassed her and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/faruqi-and-faruqi-sexual-harassment-suit-2013-3">forced her to have sex</a>.
Faruqi's $15 million countersuit says Alexandra Marchuk made up lurid lies about the firm and a prominent partner to ruin its reputation and get some cash.
Indeed, Marchuk's allegations in the sexual harassment suit she filed against Faruqi are horrifying. She says <a href="http://www.faruqilaw.com/attorneys/show/id/31">Juan Monteverde</a> harassed her relentlessly and, on the night of an office holiday party, pushed her to the floor and "quickly, forcefully, and painfully had sex with her."
The countersuit portrays Marchuk, a 2011 Vanderbilt <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">Law</keyword> grad, as "obsessive" and adoring, and it says she repeatedly hit on Monteverde. It was Marchuk who asked Monteverde to go back to his office on the night he allegedly forced himself on her, the suit says.
Faruqi &amp; Faruqi's suit goes on to allege that Marchuk had "not worn a bra and panties" the night Monteverde allegedly forced her to have sex. Monteverde, who was drunk, couldn't get an erection, so Marchuk performed oral sex on him, according to the lawsuit.
"Monteverde did not resist," the suit says.
Harry Lipman, a lawyer for Marchuk, told BI that Faruqi &amp; Faruqi's countersuit is "frivolous" and contains allegations that are a "tellingly desperate attempt to blame the victim."
Faruqi &amp; Faruqi acknowledges in <a href="http://abovethelaw.com/2013/04/lawsuit-of-the-day-nobody-puts-faruqi-in-the-cornera-a-boutique-firm-sues-an-ex-associate-for-defamation/2/">a press release posted by Above the Law </a>that Monteverde "exercised very poor judgment," but says it's convinced he didn't sexually harass Marchuk.
Monteverde is apparently a pretty big money maker for Faruqi &amp; Faruqi. He has led the firm's lucrative pursuit of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lawyers-make-a-quick-buck-off-clients-2012-11">"say on pay" litigation against huge corporations</a> authorized under Obama's financial regulatory reforms enacted in 2010.

New York Law Firm Is Accusing An Alleged Rape Victim Of Extortion

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://www.faruqilaw.com">www.faruqilaw.com</a></div>Faruqi &amp; Faruqi is a tiny Wall Street plaintiffs' <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> firm that's made a killing on<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lawyers-make-a-quick-buck-off-clients-2012-11"> "say on pay" litigation</a> against huge corporations.
Now, the small but successful law firm's name has been dominating the business news for a different reason. It was hit with an extraordinarily <a href="http://abovethelaw.com/2013/03/lawsuit-of-the-day-a-super-salacious-suit-against-a-legend-of-the-bar/2/">graphic sexual harassment</a> lawsuit.
The legal insider blog <a href="http://abovethelaw.com/">Above the Law</a> first reported on the lawsuit, which accuses one of the firm's most successful partners of relentlessly harassing a junior associate.
Faruqi &amp; Faruqi partner <a href="http://www.faruqilaw.com/attorneys/show/id/31">Juan Monteverde's</a> alleged abuse of 2011 Vanderbilt Law grad Alexandra Marchuk culminated on the evening of the office holiday party in December 2011, according to her complaint.
Monteverde asked Marchuk to come into his office that night after revealing that he probably wouldn't recommend her for a bonus that year, according to the complaint.

"After entering his office, Mr. Monteverde pushed Ms. Marchuk to the floor and quickly, forcefully, and painfully had sex with her. Suffering discomfort and not wanting to continue having sex with him, Ms. Marchuk implored Mr. Monteverde to stop, but he disregarded her pleas and continued having sex with her."
Monteverde is apparently a huge money-maker for the firm. From <a href="http://mobile.nytimes.com/dealbookarticle?articleId=556292">The New York Times' Dealbook:</a>
"In 2010, the Dodd-Frank Act gave shareholders a voice in dictating how much a company decides to pay its executives. Led by Mr. Monteverde, Faruqi &amp; Faruqi has used the reforms to file complaints — and extract settlements — from corporations by suing them over pay-related matters."
"Mr. Monteverde has also been at the forefront of shareholder merger litigation, another booming business for the plaintiffs’ bar."
A few days after the holiday party, Marchuk quit the firm and says the firm never asked about her abrupt departure. She also says a partner at the firm suggested that Monteverde's "inappropriate behavior" could cost Faruqi &amp; Faruqi a lot money, according to the suit.
Faruqi &amp; Faruqi denies the allegations. “These claims are completely without merit, brought by a disgruntled former employee,” partner <a href="http://www.faruqilaw.com/attorneys/show/id/14">Lubna M. Faruqi</a>, told Above the Law. “We look forward to aggressively defending our reputation in court and have every confidence we will be vindicated.”
Monteverde did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment Friday.

One Of Corporate America's Most Feared Enemies Was Hit With A Graphic Lawsuit

As many as five US-based law firms are investigating charges of whether <keyword id="20356" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="igate">IGate</keyword> Board of Directors failed to maximise gains of <keyword id="6376563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shareholders">shareholders</keyword> before inking the multi-billion dollar deal with French rival <keyword id="10863" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="CapGemini">Capgemini</keyword>. 
 
These law firms are reaching out to shareholders and investors of IGATE to join their investigation to ascertain if the company's Board violated their mandate, which if proved could lead to class action law suits against the firm. 
Earlier this week, Capgemini agreed to acquire the New Jersey-based company for USD 4 billion in an all cash deal. 
 
The firms -- WeissLaw, Rosen Law Firm, Ryan &amp; Maniskas, Block &amp; Leviton and Faruqi &amp; Faruqi -- are investigating for "possible breaches of fiduciary duty and other violations of law" as well as the fairness with which IGate Board considered and approved the transaction. 
When contacted, IGate declined to comment on the matter. Fiduciary duty is generally termed as a legal obligation of one party to act in best interests of another. The obligated party is typically a fiduciary, that is, someone entrusted with the care of money or property. 
 
Boston-based law firm Block &amp; Leviton said: "Under the terms of the proposal, Capgemini will acquire each IGate share for $ 48 in cash, a paltry premium of approximately 4.7 per cent. 
"Not surprisingly, because it was able to acquire IGate at such a substantial discount to its true value, shares of Capgemini soared as high as $ 85.77 upon the announcement of the proposed transaction, representing double the premium received by IGate shareholders." 
 
Market reports have stated that Capgemini has already secured voting power of 54 per cent to push the deal through, the firm added. "This support is likely underpinned by the nearly 26 per cent of the company held by <keyword id="1042241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Trivedi">Ashok Trivedi</keyword> and <keyword id="1042242" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sunil-Wadhwani">Sunil Wadhwani</keyword>, the co-founders and co-chairmen of IGate. 
 
"The two co-founders will collect approximately $ 1 billion of the total $ 4 billion in merger consideration expected to be paid in the proposed deal," it added. 
 The <keyword id="2829483" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="high-analyst">high analyst</keyword> price target on the investment websiteYahoo! <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> was $ 55, about 15 per cent higher than the offer price. 
The value of the company's shares has increased around 35 per cent in just the past four months, it added. 
 <keyword id="2829405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="WeissLaw-LLP">WeissLaw LLP</keyword>, a class action shareholder rights law firm, in a statement said it is investigating "possible breaches of fiduciary duty and other violations of law" by IGATE Board. 
Under the terms of the agreement, IGate shareholders will receive $ 48 in cash for each share they own. 
 
"WeissLaw is investigating whether IGate’s Board acted to maximise shareholder value prior to entering into agreement. Notably, the offer price represents a premium of less 5 per cent over the company stock's April 24, 2015 trading price of $ 45.93.

Hens drank water from a dripper at the back of their cage, and they ate yellow-brown pellets off a feed belt at the outside front of their cage.They lived underneath a manure belt that sagged under the waste of the hens above, and they stood on a wire floor that was slanted so their eggs would roll automatically onto the egg belt running parallel to the feed belt outside their cage.Each cage was a small, self-sufficient, automated black box.
