New Delhi, The Indian <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword> has sent a notice to <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, warning the social media platform of penal action over non-compliance of its order to <keyword id="10699637" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="remove-accounts">remove accounts</keyword> and <keyword id="6406419" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tweets">tweets</keyword> which alleged "<keyword id="10699638" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmer-genocide">farmer genocide</keyword>" in the country, sources said. Content with the hashtag "#ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide" were posted on Twitter, which, according to the government, was designed to "inflame passions" and "hatred". The notice issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY) held that it motivated the campaign to abuse, inflame and create tension in society on "unsubstantiated" grounds. The ministry also said that incitement to genocide is not freedom of speech but a threat to law and order. Citing that Twitter unilaterally unblocked accounts and tweets despite the government order, the notice said that that Twitter is an intermediary and is obliged to obey the direction of the government and refusal to do so will invite penal action. MEITY had passed an interim order dated January 31, as a matter of emergency, for blocking 257 URLs and 1 hashtag under Section 69 A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. As per the government, the interim order was issued on the ground that the said Twitter URLs and hashtag are spreading misinformation about protests and has the potential to lead to imminent violence affecting public order situation in the country. The notice cited the "public order issue" of January 26 and said that the statutory authorities are doing everything possible to ensure that no adverse public order situation takes place and no cognisable offences are committed. It further said that the ministry is in receipt of the platform's reply dated February 1, 2021, wherein Twitter has declined to abide and obey the order issued by the Indian government. "Section 69A of the Act provides jurisdiction to the Central government in cases wherein it considers it necessary or expedient to direct an intermediary to block for access for public and or cause to be blocked for access by the public any information generated, transmitted, received, stored or hosted in any computer resource if the government is satisfied that the same is necessary or expedient in order to prevent incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to public order," the notice read. "The direction to block the hashtag #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide has been found to be instigating people to commit cognizable offences in relation to public order and security of the state," it added. The notice highlighted that Section 69A (3) provides for specific penal consequences in case of non-compliance of the directions issued under Section 69A of the Act. Watching Channel One, the country's most popular state-run station, is like looking at an alternate reality.On March 25, Russian TV quoted the official Kremlin number of dead Russian soldiers at 1,351, with 3,825 wounded. Around the same time, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nato-official-40000-russian-troops-have-been-killed-captured-injured-2022-3">NATO put the number</a> of Russian military deaths in Ukraine at between 7,000 and 15,000. Instead of coffins and funerals, Channel One shows a row of eight soldiers in hospital gowns in Moscow receiving medals for bravery. Most are missing limbs below the knee. Channel One airs a segment saying Satanists working for a private military contractor made up of former American special forces soldiers are operating in Ukraine and worshipping the devil. Text crawling across the bottom of the screen shows that the Russian Defense Ministry says tactical aircraft have destroyed 83 military targets in Ukraine.Videos on social media platforms from Twitter to Telegram show airport landing strips filled with Russian military vehicles on fire. Clips of tanks and helicopters blown to smithereens in Ukrainian streets and farmers fields are everywhere. Ukraine's intelligence agency posts what it claims are tapped phone calls of Russian forces talking to relatives about the number of soldiers dying around them.None of this is mentioned in Russia's mainstream media.<h2>A moment of reality, before a flood of full blown conspiracies</h2>The only break in Channel One's carefully scheduled programming was when state television editor and segment producer Maria Ovsyannikova <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-journalist-stormed-news-broadcast-impossible-to-stay-silent-2022-3">interrupted a live broadcast</a> in mid-March to denounce the war and call out the station for airing propaganda. Ovsyannikova held up a handwritten poster with the words "they are lying to you here" written in Russian and managed to stay on screen for around 5 seconds, while host Ekaterina Andreeva continued reading from a teleprompter with only a slight adjustment in her delivery.Andreeva, a fixture on Russian broadcasts since 1997 who has read the news on Channel One's evening broadcast since <keyword id="11909347" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="putin" source="Orion">Putin</keyword> took control of the Kremlin in 2000, posted a livestream to her personal social media accounts a day later defending Channel One. "I will never agree with what that woman wrote about how we are lying. We check every fact. Our correspondents are out in all the hot spots, and video material confirms everything there that is happening," Andreeva said in a video clip posted on Telegram. The next day, Channel One broadcast and repeatedly covered President Vladimir Putin's speech to the nation where he baselessly claimed that Ukraine was committing genocide against Russians and wanted to build nuclear weapons. Putin told viewers that Ukraine has biowarfare labs intent on spreading deadly diseases, a piece of propaganda that has also circulated among far-right and QAnon conspiracy movements in the United States. In between the constant broadcast of Special Military Operation news and Putin's blistering addresses, Channel One broke to a panel show called 'Bol'shaya Igra' —'The Great Game'. A Russian lawmaker hosts the show, together with up to a half dozen panelists who stand around a video map showing the invasion of Ukraine. Each panelist offers their expertise and analysis, often in increasingly loud and angry voices. Sometimes they pound a hand on the table for emphasis. They denounce traitors, whip up threats and claim that the US and Ukraine are training migratory birds to infect Russians with bioweapons that will cause victims to lose their Slavic identity and grow to dislike traditional dishes.This is what state television in Russia is broadcasting around the clock, every day, and it doesn't show any sign of stopping.

Some white South Africans say attacks on farmers are intentionally underreported.&#xa0;&#xa0;AfriForum, which has lobbied the US government to take up the cause, has called apartheid a "so-called" injustice.White nationalists in Europe, North America, and Australia have latched on to the issue. They convince audiences that every nonwhite population is a risk. But you see it a lot in Fox News and primetime, specifically, with anti-immigrant segments.Laura Ingraham: The America that we know and love doesn't exist anymore. Massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people, and they're changes that none of us ever voted for and most of us don't like.Carlson: Latin American countries are changing election outcomes here by forcing demographic change on this country at a rate that American voters consistently say they don't want.Lou Dobbs: Put out welcome wagons! Pile 'em high because we're just going to consign tens of thousands, perhaps millions, of Americans to their deaths.Manny: This Great Replacement rhetoric is effective at fueling anxieties that Americans already have. If you're concerned about the economy, the job market, or healthcare coverage, The Great Replacement theory provides you with someone to blame.López: This has been incredibly successful with fear mongers. You'll see Tucker Carlson talking about how "this town doesn't look the same as it used to look."Carlson: In the year 2000, Hazelton was less than 2% Hispanic. Today, thanks to mass immigration, Hazelton is majority Hispanic.Manny: When it comes to Great Replacement rhetoric, Tucker Carlson has faced scrutiny before. In August 2018, Tucker said that the South African government was seizing lands from white farmers because they were white.Carlson: That is literally the definition of racism.Manny: It's a talking point that until then lived only on extremely partisan platforms on the internet. Users on white supremacist platforms like Stormfront said South Africa was committing, quote, white genocide. In an investigation, the BBC found no proof that farmers were being killed at a higher rate than average citizens, and homicides where farmers were the victims were at a 19-year low.However, soon after Tucker's segment, the president of the United States tweeted that he was ordering Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to investigate these claims. He even tags Tucker Carlson in the tweet.Erroneous white supremacist rhetoric echoed by Fox News made it to the ear of the president of the United States, influencing him to make it part of our government's day job.Can you hear me? To truly understand what's at stake here, there's one more place that The Great Replacement rhetoric is common.In October 2018, a mass shooting occurred at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Just before the attack, the shooter condemned a Jewish-run refugee charity, claiming that they bring in invaders that kill our people, which echoes a common Great Replacement narrative. In March 2019, another mass shooting occurred at two mosques in New Zealand, killing 49 people. Before that attack, the shooter wrote a manifesto. Its title: "The Great Replacement."Fox News did not influence these attacks, but it's concerning that rhetoric associated with extremist concepts like The Great Replacement can be heard on air. I reached out to Fox News with my argument, and they provided me with two statements."We will not allow voices like Laura Ingraham, Lou Dobbs or Tucker Carlson to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts from the intolerant partisan activists like Media Matters whose only goal is to silence conservative thought they don't agree with."And, through a spokesperson, Laura Ingraham said, "My comments were based on research published in The Washington Post on immigration and America's changing demographics. Attempts by left-wing media outlets to attribute nefarious motives to my remarks speaks to their intolerance and bias, not mine."Again, the only thing I'm intolerant of is unseasoned food, but...At the end of the day, the language we use can have a lasting impact on those on the receiving end of it. The alliance, named COICA, presented its idea for a "sacred corridor of life and culture" at the United Nations' Conference on Biodiversity in Egypt last week. The proposed area would become the world's largest protected space, equal in size to Mexico."We have come from the forest and we worry about what is happening," COICA vice president Tuntiak Katan said, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/nov/21/amazon-indigenous-groups-propose-mexico-sized-corridor-of-life">according to The Guardian</a>. "This space is the world's last great sanctuary for biodiversity. It is there because we are there. Other places have been destroyed."COICA does not recognize national borders that were put in place without indigenous people's consent, but the alliance includes members from about 500 cultures in nine countries. The alliance wants to collaborate with NGOs and other indigenous groups, and it's seeking government-level representation at the UN Convention on Biodiversity. The group's proposal comes amid a large shift in Brazilian politics that could potentially devastate the Amazon forest. Jair Bolsonaro, the recently elected president, has said that development in Brazil is being hampered by too many environmentally protected areas, and he will soon control nearly two-thirds of the Amazon. Bolsonaro has voiced plans to cut down more of the rainforest, and critics are worried that he will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brazil-president-bolsonaro-destroy-the-amazon-2018-10">"institutionalize genocide"</a> in the Amazon. <a href="http://climate.org/deforestation-and-climate-change/">Soil in the Amazon is not good for farming</a>, but scientists <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-07220-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found that an area the size of Delaware</a> - <a href="https://news.mongabay.com/2015/05/whats-the-current-deforestation-rate-in-the-amazon-rainforest/">more than 1,900 square miles</a> - was cleared in 2017. COICA's proposal is larger and broader than Colombia's, The Guardian reported. COICA said it will push for the implementation of a protected area no matter what Bolsonaro and other politicians do. The group has little political power, though, and may come under attack by the mining and agribusiness industries."We know the governments will try to go over our heads," Katan said, according to The Guardian. "We need a defensive strategy, a communications strategy. This is nothing new for us. The election of Brazil's far-right president could devastate the Amazon, and indigenous groups are calling for a 'sacred corridor of life' to protect it

My grandparents didn't talk about how they suffered during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor">Holodomor</a> - a forced famine in Ukraine perpetuated by the Soviets in the 1930s. I have seen pictures though, of them waiting in line for bread at a relocation camp. They finally fled Ukraine in 1943. My uncle was born during the journey somewhere in Poland.
With mounting pressure from the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin has tried to <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/putin-reserves-the-right-to-use-force-in-ukraine/2014/03/04/92d4ca70-a389-11e3-a5fa-55f0c77bf39c_story.html">defend his invasion</a> of the Crimea section of Ukraine. Putin claims Russia has a right to protect the former government headed by President Viktor Yanukovych in a "lawless" country like Ukraine. 
But many people forget the history of oppression against Ukraine goes much further back than Putin's recent invasion. During Soviet rule in the 1930s, when my grandparents lived there, Stalin lead a genocide of Ukrainians.
"The Ukrainians have a lingering memory of a previous union with the Russians that nearly broke the back of their nation," Walter Zaryckyj, executive director for the Center for U.S.-Ukrainian Relations (CUSUR) told the <a href="http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/366682/roots-ukraine-protests-stalins-genocide-alec-torres">National Review</a>.
In 1932, Joseph Stalin and his forces perpetuated a famine in Ukraine known as "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor">Holodomor</a>," meaning "death by hunger." As a communist leader, Stalin wanted to curtail the country's growing independence (declared for the first time in 1918). He considered wealthy farmers, known as "<a href="http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/324575/kulak">kulaks</a>," capitalist and, therefore, anti-socialist. Consequently, Stalin instituted "dekulakization," seizing families' estates and imposing heavy grain taxes. He hoped not only to feed his growing forces but also to force Ukraine to abandon their national pride and adopt Soviet ideals.
 No one knows how many Ukrainians perished, but historians estimate anywhere from <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7111296.stm">3 million to 10 million people</a> starved to death. Some <a href="http://www.holodomorct.org/accounts.html">eyewitness accounts</a> describe people eating their dogs and, horrifingly, their own children. 
But history often ignores Stalin's reign of terror. Currently, Russia doesn't recognize the Holodomor as a genocide, <a href="http://www.worldaffairsjournal.org/blog/alexander-j-motyl/yanukovych-and-stalin%E2%80%99s-genocide">nor</a> does Ukraine's ousted, pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych. While Kremlin-supporters fail to acknowledge the genocide, many countries, as well as the <a href="http://www.unitedhumanrights.org/genocide/ukraine_famine.htm">United Nations Human Rights Council</a>, recognize the event as exactly that. Even <a href="http://www.uccla.ca/SOVIET_GENOCIDE_IN_THE_UKRAINE.pdf">Raphael Lemkin</a>, the man who coined the term "genocide," used the Holodomor as an example. While we can never call one tragedy "worse" than another, some historians claim Stalin killed just as many Ukrainians as Hitler killed Jews - possibly more.
Although Ukraine declared independence 1918, that government soon collapsed, and the country wouldn't gain true independence until after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Decades later, Yanukovych has maintained a close relationship with Russia and Putin, a leader who makes no secret of his pro-Stalin ideology. Recently, he <a href="http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/sochi-winter-olympics-opening-ceremony-hail-stalin-era-industrial-revolution-1435468">dedicated</a> the Sochi Olympics to his favorite communist leader. On top of that, Yanukovych has refused to allow Ukraine to join the European Union and cut troubled ties to Russia.
"For Ukrainians, E.U. membership means more than economic opportunities and mobility. It is about distancing themselves from Putin, who is said to revere Stalin, the very dictator who tried to erase Ukraine and managed to partition it, at least politically," Andrea Chalupa, who studied at the <a href="http://www.huri.harvard.edu/">Harvard Ukrainian Institute</a>, wrote for <a href="http://ideas.time.com/2013/12/17/how-to-explain-whats-happening-in-the-ukraine/?iid=op-main-lead">Time</a>.
Although fewer than one-fifth of Americans feel the U.S. has any obligation to protect Ukraine from Russian invasion, according to a<a href="http://cdn.yougov.com/cumulus_uploads/document/1bf0l9uz87/tabs_OPI_ukraine_20140303.pdf"> YouGov poll</a>, history reminds us of the need to watch closely. Putin's affiliation with Stalin looks all too clear. And Hillary Clinton, among others, already compared <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-clinton-comments-on-russia-and-hitler-2014-3">the Kremlin's actions to those of Adolf Hitler</a>.
For Ukraine, this invasion just signifies another notch in a long line of abuses.

"People who have their own views on history and the history of our country may argue with me, but it seems to me that the Russian and Ukrainian peoples are practically one people," he said in <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/29/putin-ukraine_n_5735454.html">August 2014</a>.Putin reiterated this point on the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/11480864/Vladimir-Putin-praises-Russian-patriotism-and-claims-Ukrainians-and-Russians-are-one.html">one year anniversary</a> of Crimea's annexation, and on Friday morning he said Ukraine and Russia are "<a href="https://twitter.com/lauraphylmills/status/611899944555937792">doomed to share the same fate</a>."As an ethnic Ukrainian, I can see the two countries undoubtedly have similarities: geography, language, and even cuisine. But one characteristic - or rather one figure - forever separates them: Joseph Stalin. He ordered teachers and historians to rewrite texts to portray Stalin as a successful leader, not a violent tyrant. He also created a group to open museums in the Soviet figure's honor. Today, nearly half of Russians think the Soviet Union's remarkable economic progress made up for the "sacrifices" (read: horrors) Stalin perpetuated, <a href="http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/was-stalins-terror-justified-poll-shows-more-russians-think-it-was/518298.html">according to a recent poll</a>.
