But India's homegrown social media startup Hike's founder Kavin Mittal has a question that he believes can change the way we look at social media in the country – what happens when the customers ask for their cut from these platforms for using their data? According to McKinsey's report, the average Indian social media user spends 17 hours on platforms every week and consumes over 8.3 gigabytes of data – that's higher than the average data usage in the US or China. And this enormous data and user numbers, which is only set to get higher (India's total internet users could cross 800 million by 2023), has got social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, setting up shop in India, and feeding on the data produced in India. Speaking at the Business Insider Global Trends Festival 2020, Mittal said, "It's fascinating to see all these social media companies grow at the back of the customer data. Your data, my data – but where's my cut? Customers being the owner of their own data – this is going to be a radical transformation, especially in a market like India." Mittal believes that is the next big leg of monetisation of social media in India, which has so far been riding on ad revenues. The next big money from social media – ads, micropayments and commerce There’s been a lot spoken about the next big wave of social media and the power of revenue it will bring with it. However, even with the millions of new users coming in, Mittal believes that the cost per thousand is still very low in India and so micropayments or small transactions made by users online will be another thought that drives monetization. However, <keyword id="3395480" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Farid-Ahsan">Farid Ahsan</keyword>, founder of <keyword id="3358959" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShareChat">Sharechat</keyword>, one of India’s largest home grown platforms, still swears by the ad revenue model. “We are not against any sort of monetisation in a low ARPU economy like India. It's important that you are able to build revenue in a way that it's a win-win for everyone whether it's the brand, platform or the user,” said Ahsan. Ahsan believes that the combination of ads and micropayments will lead to a commerce-driven economy. The idea of clubbing ads, micropayments and commerce has also seen the rise of the social commerce vertical in India with homegrown players like Meesho (backed by Facebook), having rapidly made a mark in India. “All of these platforms will eventually become communities with their own economies where there are creators, brands, and consumers. That’s honestly how a platform should be defined – the net GMV of a platform is much larger than what the platform can actually monetize,” he said. A CEO explains how a choice he's made since moving to the US at age 13 helped him go on to build a $600 million business

As every budding entrepreneur today is thinking of pain points from where their business ideas can emerge, three Lucknow boys are already on their feet trying to connect underserved netizens who want to have social interactions in their language of choice. 
 <keyword id="3395480" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Farid-Ahsan">Farid Ahsan</keyword>, <keyword id="724261" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhanu-Singh">Bhanu Singh</keyword> and <keyword id="3395481" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ankush-Sachdeva">Ankush Sachdeva</keyword> - all three of whom are <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword> passouts - have identified these users as non-metro audience who are widely unaddressed by the social products available in the market. They say Facebook or Twitter are serving a very niche audience in Indian society and not those who are still experimenting with the internet through their smartphones with limited data packs. 
 
This lot, they said, wants to express themselves online but do not have a platform which allows them to interact in the comfort of their local languages. The trio then came down to the conclusion - if they were to give these people an alternative, this untouched market would nto shy away from communicating socially like others. 
 It is for this reason this trio soon started developing an app last year, and this led to the birth of '<keyword id="3358959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShareChat">Sharechat</keyword>' - a one of its kind social networking app for India’s vernacular language users, what the founders would like to call "India's real Facebook". 
 
The sheer success this app has got in the past few months indicates people were desperately seeking for such a platform. The app has been downloaded over 1 million times and it has half a million active monthly users. It started as a fun app for Whatsapp with users sharing 1 lakh content pieces per day, and has now made rapid strides towards becoming a full-fledged social network.

And he walked into the store and he said, "Hey, I want to buy a franchise. Are you franchising?' I hadn't even thought about franchising, so I said, "Of course we're going to franchise! It's not only digital, but lucky for us that people are going more towards natural products and fruit, so we are now launching a smoothie concept."Farid continued: "We're putting yogurt in smoothies because we have fruit, and that same fruit can be used to make juice bars and all these things. The CEO of a $600 million company 'soft boots' his business every 5 years - even if things are going well

Who, then, would dream of competing with the mainstay of positive gestures and sentiments?
 At least that's what experts asked Tariq Farid, then a flower shop owner, when he pitched them the idea behind Edible Arrangements&#xa0;in 1999.
Farid, who had&#xa0;begun toying with flower-shaped cutters and pineapple slices, was&#xa0;told to "stick with flowers, that I was wasting my time and my money on fruit bouquets," he explains to Business Insider.
But when he first took an arrangement home and put it on the table, his mother told him, "This is going to be great." That's all the encouragement he needed to begin his new venture.
Farid recalls telling a respected local professional about the new business and his "focus group of one." The expert laughed, reminding Farid that he was in the flower business and that he should focus on what he knew best. "No one is doing this," the expert told Farid, "so I don't know why you think it will be successful."
"In my heart, however, I knew I had a winner, and that is what drove me to pursue the idea despite the advice of the 'experts,'" Farid recalls.&#xa0; 
Fast forward to today: The $500 million&#xa0;company is an industry leader with&#xa0;more than 1,200 franchises. It recently&#xa0;ranked No. 40 on Entrepreneur magazine's&#xa0;<a href="http://www.entrepreneur.com/franchises/ediblearrangementsintlllc/299915-0.html">Top 500 franchise companies</a>&#xa0;list.
The negative feedback he received from industry experts - and the positive feedback from his most trusted advisor - quickly taught him a valuable lesson he still carries with him today: "You shouldn't be afraid to go against the advice of experts when, in your heart, you believe the direction you want to take is the right one."

Likewise, just because someone is a successful business person or a college professor doesn't mean they always have the best advice. "They often are no more of an expert than your mother."
"There are those times when you must stand firm and you - and only you - will need to make a decision that will have a far-reaching impact on the future of your business," he explains. "Often, these decisions require that you go against popular opinion."

People laughed at this entrepreneur's idea - now it's a $500 million business, thanks to his mom

On March 25, a 63-year old named Farid Rashti collapsed on a field in Sunnyvale, Calif., while playing soccer. He was having a heart attack. His teammates called 911 and waited for trained professionals to arrive.Lucky for Rashti, a man named Walter Huber rushed to the scene and saved his life. Huber had received an notification about Rashti's condition from his phone.The app alerting Huber of Rashti was called PulsePoint; It crowdsources CPR-trained individuals whenever there's a person in need of CPR within walking distance.The PulsePoint app was created by an eponymous nonprofit organization hoping to mobilize CPR-trained people in the hopes of saving lives. Communities join via their hospitals. Every time 9-11 is dispatched for a cardiac arrest case, it informs users of the app who are within a quarter-mile radius of the event in the hopes that they may be able to get there first. These users receive an alert and hopefully spring to the occasion. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Shannon Smith of PulsePoint told Business Insider that the idea is to speed up the "chain of survival." Last year, the app was also able to save <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-smartphone-app-called-pulsepoint-just-saved-this-infants-life-2014-9">a baby in need of CPR</a>.Smith explained that the idea came from a former fire chief in San Ramon, California who once learned a man died of cardiac arrest when he was merely feet away. He realized that if he had received an alert that this man was nearby, he may have been able to save his life.So the fire chief worked with researchers at Northern Kentucky University to build the app.Now, PulsePoint is in over 1,100 communities in North America, has been activated 4,400 times, with over 12,000 CPR-trained responders, according to Smith. Due to HIPAA regulations, it's rare that the organization can disclose when it has saved a life. "We don't have an account of every save," explained Smith. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">HPAntonio Lucio</div></div></div>Last September, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hp-demands-ad-agencies-are-more-diverse-2016-9">HP Inc. cracked the whip on its ad agencies</a> and issued them an ultimatum: move the needle on the number of women and minorities in the teams servicing the brand, or risk losing the business.Today, the company said that women now make up 61% of its account teams and 51% of senior leadership at its global agencies, including BBDO, Fred &amp; Farid, gyro, PHD and Edelman. But, only 8% of all employee growth across HP's global agencies year-over-year was from minorities."Changing hearts and minds is hard, but creating systemic change that drives business is even harder," Antonio Lucio, HP's global chief marketing and communication officer, told Business Insider. "You need to reinvent management, change mindsets and have consistency of purpose."Since calling on its agencies to set up action plans to boost diversity last year, Lucio has led the charge in pushing them toward the agenda. But HP is far from alone. Other big advertisers, including Verizon and General Mills, have also been on the frontline, calling for changes in the ad business. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/verizons-cmo-is-launching-a-fellowship-program-to-tackle-the-ad-industrys-diversity-problem-2017-9">Verizon recently launched its own diversity fellowship program.</a>Lucio said that diversity was a long-term objective for HP, not just for itself, but across the industry. To that end, the company also announced a series of new initiatives, aiming to increase the pipeline of talent from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the industry.HP, for instance, is launching a diversity program with the industry's biggest festival, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Similar to the <a href="https://www.canneslions.com/festival/get-involved/see-it-be-it">Cannes See It Be It program</a>, which provides mentorship and leadership sessions and networking opportunities for women creatives, HP's program with Cannes will focus on providing similar opportunities to underrepresented and minority talent. The company is also funding grants with industry organizations, including ADCOLOR and the 3% Conference. These grants are dedicated to supporting, nurturing and mentoring young professionals from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds. It will also continue to sponsor "Free the Bid," and initiative guaranteeing women directors equal opportunities to bid on commercial jobs in the global <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> industry."For us, this has always been as much a business imperative as a values issue," said Lucio. "But our business and industry will not be transformed unless we go through a comprehensive platform of objectives."HP has also issued a fresh mandate to its agencies as far as underrepresented minorities are concerned.
