<ul><li>The Indian government banned 59 <keyword id="6022999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chinese-apps">Chinese apps</keyword> including popular ones like TikTok, UC Browser, ShareIt and others.</li><li>These apps have been banned at a time when the India-China border tensions have been escalating.</li><li>The government cited national security concerns and banned Chinese apps under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.</li></ul>The Indian government has banned 59 Chinese apps including popular video sharing platform TikTok. The ban comes at a time when India and China are embroiled in a border dispute in the Galwan Valley region. "The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps,” the government <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1635206">said</a> in its official notification. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="76704537" title="TikTok ban results in hilarious memes on Twitter but users wonder why PUBG Mobile escaped the ban" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The sudden ban may have raised several questions among the people. In this post, we will answer some of the questions that you may have about the Chinese apps banned in India. <ol><li>Why did the Indian government ban Chinese apps? The Chinese apps banned by the Indian government were reportedly engaging in activities that are ‘prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order’. The notification further said that the Ministry of Information Technology has received complaints and reports of these apps “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India”.</li><li>Which Chinese apps have been banned in India? TikTok has already been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/tiktok-has-been-removed-from-the-google-play-store-and-the-apple-app-store/articleshow/76702533.cms" target="">removed </a>from the Play Store and the App Store in India. The other banned apps are expected to be removed in the coming days as well. While you will still be able to install the apps on your phone using APKs available on the internet, it is not recommended to do so.An APK is a file that is used to install Android apps. It may not be safe to download these files from unofficial sources.</li><li>Will I be able to use these apps? If you have already downloaded the app, you will be able to access the app for now. However, the government may ask the internet service providers (ISPs) and telecom companies to stop users from accessing these apps by blocking them.</li><li>Is it illegal to use the banned Chinese apps? At present, it is not illegal to use the banned Chinese apps. If you wish to continue using these apps, you can do so without any issue as long as they are working. “Users who have already downloaded these apps may see a message citing the Government’s order as the reason to restrict the user’s access. However, similar banning orders have been passed by the government in the past as well, and have often been a challenge to implement practically, since users may be able to view such sites through proxy servers and domains,” Tanu Banerjee, a partner at Induslaw told Business Insider.</li><li>Is there a fine on using the banned Chinese apps? As it is not illegal to use the banned Chinese apps, you will not be fined for using them.</li><li>What should I do if I have the banned Chinese app on my phone? While the app will continue working for some time, they will no longer receive any updates in India as they will be removed from the Play Store. Chinese apps banned in India – What will happen to the apps on your phone, should you remove the app and other questions answered

LyftLyft's new driver app.In the ride-hailing battle between Lyft and Uber, Lyft is generally perceived as the more driver-friendly company. But Lyft has trailed Uber in one important area: offering drivers a dedicated app to help them get their jobs done.That's a problem the company has quietly fixed, Business Insider has learned. Lyft discretely launched the new "Lyft Driver" app in the beginning of May on both <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lyft.android.driver&amp;hl=en">Android</a> and <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lyft-driver/id1203077485?mt=8">iOS.</a> It's already racked up over 100,000 downloads in the US in the last two weeks, according to <a href="https://apptopia.com/store-insights/top-charts">Apptopia</a>, which measures app downloads and analytics."We are in the process of rolling out a new driver app and will share more details soon," a Lyft spokesperson said.Before the launch of the new app, Lyft's drivers could switch into driver mode straight from the passenger app everyone uses today. Now, the company is splitting the app for the benefit of both passengers and drivers, its help section reads. Both the passenger and driver app can now take up less storage space on a phone since they're not sandwiching the features together."For instance, if you only use Lyft for driving, we want to give you a driver-tailored experience, which also saves valuable storage space on your device. The same goes for Lyft riders," the <a href="https://help.lyft.com/hc/en-us/articles/115006889467-Lyft-Driver-app">company said in its FAQ section</a>.While the launch of Lyft Driver doesn't come with added features, drivers will be able to track trip earnings and driver referral bonuses from inside the standalone app thanks to dedicated tabs.It also has the added bonus of letting Lyft continue to build out driver-specific features at a faster pace - something that its rival Uber has put at the front of its roadmap for 2017. Uber has had a standalone driver app for years and has added everything <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-wants-to-help-drivers-find-cheap-gas-and-maybe-even-the-bathroom-2016-4">from gas finder features</a> to a section on all the discounts drivers can take advantage of.Lyft already has a lot of goodwill with drivers thank to the fact that it includes a tip button in its app (something which Uber refuses to do). Lyft has finally matched one of Uber's big advantages with drivers by launching a new, standalone driving app

MICROSOFT'S PLAN FOR THE NOKIA BRAND: Last April, <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/mobile-insider-microsofts-deal-for-nokia-closes--baidus-growing-mobile-audience--amazon-prime-data-plan-2014-4">Microsoft closed its acquisition</a> of Nokia's handset division. Since then, questions have arisen about the fate of Nokia hardware, and whether Microsoft will keep the brand. The Nokia brand will be phased out, and replaced by the Microsoft brand, as part of the terms of the acquisition, according to a leaked document sent to then-Nokia, now-Microsoft employees (which was <a href="http://evleaks.at/2014/06/11/goodbye-pure-hello-segoe-near-term-post-transition-guidance-ex-nokians-regarding-branded-future/">published by Evleaks</a>). The document is centered on a "Brand FAQ," which sets the framework and timetables for the phasing out. The fade-out of the Nokia brand is going to happen in stages. Microsoft has 18 months to continue using the Nokia brand for Lumia devices, until the end of 2015 for Nokia X devices, and 10 years for other mobile phones (meaning Nokia's extensive line of feature phones). 
In short, Nokia as a handset brand will slowly fade into the background. Microsoft said it would keep Nokia-branded retail stores and "Care Centres" for the time being. But the general takeaway is that a device brand once synonymous with mobile will eventually disappear.
NOKIA'S MAPPING DIVISION MAKES A NEW ACQUISITION: What about Nokia's non-device divisions that were not sold to Microsoft? Two weeks ago <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/mobile-insider-chinas-real-user-base--apples-iwatch-confirmed--more-on-project-tango-2014-6">we covered</a> how Nokia's Here, the company's mapping division, had acquired Desti, an app built around natural language-processing and artificial intelligence. Desti could help the mapping service field user requests and answer them with location-based results. Now, Here has bought the predictive analytics startup Medio Systems. Nokia's Here is clearly trying to build out a robust mapping program. 
NOKIA WANTS TO CREATE PERSONALIZED MAPS: BI Intelligence talked with Here's VP of search and discovery, Don Zereski. The purpose of the Medio acquisition, he said, is to "generate personal maps," or maps custom-tailored to an individual's preferences and habits. Medio is able to analyze the types of locations a user likes, as well as other contextual information, and provide recommendations. For instance, it will know if there's a traffic jam and give an alternate route (much like Google Maps and its Waze-powered features). But, Zereski explained, it will also know personal information - for instance, if I like local coffee shops it will recommend those as opposed to large chains.
Here is hoping to gain market share from other mapping companies, including Google. It's currently available as a Windows Phone app and built into car dashboard systems. Here also has licensing deals with large companies, including Amazon and Microsoft. It seems like a natural step for Here to become available as a stand-alone app on mobile operating systems other than Windows, which pales in market share compared to Android and iOS (see chart, below), but Zereski wouldn't give any concrete plans. He did admit "[we] certainly want to reach a large audience."

GOOGLE'S NEW EFFORT TO MAKE ANDROID APPS MORE CONSISTENT: For those paying close attention, there have been a few hints of what may be announced at Google's I/O developers' conference later this month. One of these is a new "design paradigm," called Quantum, which is aimed at making Google apps' user interfaces more consistent. <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/06/11/exclusive-quantum-paper-and-googles-upcoming-effort-to-make-consistent-ui-simple/">Android Police leaked</a> some details. This program, it says, is meant to "unify and codify paradigms for visual, motion, and interactive design across all platforms, including web, Android, and iOS." It includes design guidelines for developers, as well as app-building tools, and would lead to a more a more unified appearance for Google's own apps and outside developers' apps. It's interesting that Google, long known for fostering an anything-goes atmosphere on Android, is now moving towards more uniformity and consistency. If this and the <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/mobile-insider-asia-pacifics-mobile-dominance--googles-declining-mobile-ad-share--google-nearby-2014-6">recently-leaked Nearby program</a> prove to be true, this year's I/O should be quite an event.
HUAWEI ANNOUNCES ONLINE STORE: Chinese hardware company <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/12/huawei-launches-an-online-store-to-sell-its-own-unlocked-phones/">Huawei has announced</a> a new online store called GetHuawei in the U.S. The store will sell unlocked phones that can be purchased and sent directly to consumers. This is a big change compared to how most mobile device companies have been selling their equipment (through carrier-controlled retail outlets), rather than direct to consumers online. It's a real gamble since Huawei is not a well-known consumer brand in the U.S., but direct to consumer selling is precisely the way Xiaomi <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/xiaomi-has-gone-on-an-incredible-rise-to-become-chinas-third-largest-smartphone-maker-2014-5">rose in the ranks</a> in China to become the third-largest handset maker in shipment terms. 
STARBUCKS PHONE RECHARGE STATIONS: Starbucks has announced that it is going to install wireless charging stations, called "Powermat Spots," in its shops nationwide. The coffeehouse chain says it will begin installing these in West Coast locations over the rest of this year. "2015 will see expansions to major metropolises across the United States," Powermat president Daniel Schreiber <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/12/5801716/starbucks-rolling-out-powermat-wireless-chargers-nationwide">told The Verge</a>. 
Powermat uses a wireless charging standard called Rezence that, through magnetic technology, allows compatible devices to lay on the surface and charge. Many devices, however, won't work with the Rezence magnetic charging stations. Phones actually need to have special hardware in order to work with the platforms. (The company does sell cheap external adapters that can be plugged into phones in order for them to charge at the stations.) The Rezence charging standard competes directly with another called Qi. Rezence and Qi have been duking it out for the past year trying to get manufacturers to preinstall their charging technology in phones. Qi currently leads when it comes to devices with its technology preinstalled - these include the LG G3 and the Nexus 5. This Starbucks announcement is a major win for Rezence. 
THE SOLUTION TO SHORT BATTERY LIFE MIGHT BE SIMPLE - TWO BATTERIES: Battery life is the bane of mobile users' existence. Researchers have been working for decades on inventing longer-lasting batteries. This includes tweaking hardware to be more energy-efficient as well as tinkering with battery chemistry. But batteries have advanced at a very slow pace as compared with other technologies. One idea showcased by Microsoft researcher Ranveer Chandra is two smaller lithium batteries in lieu of one big one. <a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/news/528201/digital-summit-microsoft-aims-for-smartphones-that-run-for-a-week/">MIT Technology Review writes</a>, "One would be optimized to efficiently provide a large supply of current … The other would be designed to trickle out smaller currents." This could potentially increase a mobile device's life up to 50%. Of course, all of this is still in the research stages with no word on when and how it could be released commercially. Once a company comes up with a truly revolutionary answer to the battery life problem, it could give them a definite edge over competitors in the smartphone market. 
SAMSUNG MAKES KEY HIRES: Samsung has <a href="http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/samsung-adds-blackberry-nokia-and-disney-execs-boost-us-wireless-presence/2014-06-11?utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_source=rss&amp;utm_campaign=rss">announced three new key hires</a>, all of whom hail from large mobile and media companies.

<li>Robin Bienfait, who served as BlackBerry's CIO, will join Samsung as its EVP and chief enterprise officer of the company's enterprise services unit.</li>
<li>Mark Louison, formerly an executive at Nokia, has been named SVP of wireless network systems.</li>
<li>And John Pleasants has been hired as EVP of the companies Media Solutions Center America. Previously, Pleasants worked at Disney's interactive media unit.</li>
</ul>
All three hires show Samsung looking beyond hardware and toward media and infrastructure.

After facing a lot of backlash from users over privacy concerns, the Facebook-owned messaging app has now issued a clarification that your privacy won't be affected if you don't use its two optional features. In its <a href="https://faq.whatsapp.com/general/security-and-privacy/answering-your-questions-about-whatsapps-privacy-policy/">FAQ section</a>, WhatsApp has said that the new privacy policy does not affect the privacy of your messages with your friends and family. WhatsApp Business accounts will also be able to use Facebook’s Shops platform to display their products on WhatsApp. If you shop from businesses that are using the Shops platform, your shopping activity data will be shared with Facebook and it will be used to show ads on Facebook and Instagram Additionally, Facebook will soon allow you to message businesses using WhatsApp using a button on its platform. In my day job, I oversee our <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> tech coverage, which encompasses cloud computing, artificial intelligence, open source software, and productivity (shameless plug: you can <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/hyperscale-microsofts-absence-big-techs-day-capitol-hill-weinberger/?trackingId=8AQFlIfRhw%2F%2Fh0de9cOoxQ%3D%3D">read all about it on Hyperscale</a>, my enterprise tech newsletter, which publishes via LinkedIn on Fridays).So imagine my surprise when <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> — the single largest company in the enterprise sector — suddenly and unexpectedly found itself inserted into the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timeline-tiktok-microsoft-potential-acquisition-2020-8">saga of Chinese-owned TikTok</a>, the hottest consumer app in who knows how many years. As you've probably heard by now, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-continuing-talks-to-acquire-tiktoks-us-operations-2020-8">Microsoft is in talks to buy up TikTok</a>, or at least its American operations, in a deal likely to be worth many billions of dollars.Microsoft has said that it expects those talks to be completed, one way or the other, by September 15th. President Donald Trump has upped the pressure by saying that he intends to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tiktok-ban-sold-by-sept-15-microsoft-2020-8">ban TikTok in the United States entirely if the app isn't owned by an American company by that date (and that the US should get a cut of the sale, which is generally not how that works).</a><h2>A brief Q&amp;A on Microsoft/TikTok</h2>I won't pretend to be an expert in international trade or China relations, but I am pretty familiar with Microsoft and how it operates. While nothing is set in stone and another buyer could swoop in, Microsoft seems like the most likely buyer, not least because it has the cash to spare and because it's so far avoided the worst of the antitrust scrutiny that rivals like Google and Facebook now find themselves under. Therefore, I've taken the liberty of throwing together a quick FAQ on what Microsoft might be thinking:Q: This is a weird deal, right?A: On the face of it, it's super weird. But, if you dig a little bit deeper — well, it's still super weird, but starts to make a little bit more sense. Q: Isn't Microsoft all about cloud computing and Microsoft Teams and all that kind of thing these days?A: Sure is. Under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has seen a tremendous bull run, thanks almost entirely to its focus on products like the Azure cloud platform and Office 365 productivity suite. In fact, Microsoft recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-satya-nadella-close-retail-stores-mixer-strategy-2020-7">shuttered most of the Microsoft retail stores and the Mixer live-streaming service, a rival to Amazon's Twitch, in a move to make sure the company stayed on target</a>. The Xbox game console is Microsoft's last major consumer brand.<div type="image" title="kevin mayer" height="1378" width="2226" msid="77371071" hostid="261"></div>Q: So where does TikTok fit into that master plan?A: Honestly, it probably doesn't. Q: Wait, but...A: The best and most educated guesses hold that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-tiktok-acquisition-analyst-donald-trump-2020-7">Microsoft sees TikTok as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win over an entire generation of fans</a>. With an estimated 100 million mostly-younger daily active users, TikTok has a built-in audience, and the pressure from the White House to sell is expected to give Microsoft an edge in negotiations. Plus, it could be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-microsoft-deal-for-tiktok-is-a-big-tech-win-2020-8">Microsoft's chance to wind the clock back and get another chance to take on Facebook and Google in online advertising</a>. Otherwise, we'll have to wait and see.Q: So will it work?A: Great question. Nadella has largely earned the benefit of the doubt — his signature acquisitions of LinkedIn, GitHub, and "Minecraft" maker Mojang have all been very successful, and established a trend towards allowing big-money acquisitions to retain a level of independence previously thought unthinkable in the industry. But on the other hand...<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-mixer-shutdown-inside-story-xbox-2020-6">I already mentioned that Microsoft just shut down Mixer</a>, right?Q: Last question: Doesn't it set a bizarre precedent for Silicon Valley in particular and American capitalism as a whole for a sitting president to get so involved in the affairs of a private company like Microsoft? A: Great question! You're very good at asking smart questions. Keep it up. But it looks like we've run a bit long, so let's put a pin in this for now. But feel free to keep asking those sharp, sharp questions!<h2>So how did the Big Tech hearing go?</h2>The sudden news of a potential Microsoft and TikTok tie-up was only the capstone on a week that was already incredibly busy. On Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> CEO Jeff Bezos, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-live-congress-big-tech-antitrust-apple-google-facebook-amazon-2020-7">all testified before Congress</a> on allegations of anticompetitive behavior. As expected, there was plenty of grandstanding, but there was also some substance there. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-made-amazon-apple-facebook-google-ceos-sweat-during-hearing-2020-7">Business Insider's Linette Lopez writes</a>, the execs were forced to testify under oath about allegations about Amazon's use of third-party seller data, or Facebook's history of spying on the competition. <div type="image" title="tech ceo congressional hearing" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77371074" hostid="261"></div>More interesting than the hearing, however, were the internal emails released by the House Judiciary Committee as part of its investigation. With the release of documents, we got a rare insight into how these tech giants do business: Everything from an email from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-amazon-acquired-ring-2018-3">Jeff Bezos on the $1 billion purchase of smart doorbell company Ring</a>, to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/newly-released-emails-show-ruthlessness-of-steve-jobs-2020-7">missive from late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs recommending the company "cut off" a developer</a>. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-facebook-google-ceos-mergers-antitrust-documents-acquisitions-2020-7">Business Insider's Becky Peterson reports</a>, the big takeaway is that in several cases, these mega-companies bought up startups not because they wanted their technology — which they often seemed to find lacking — but because they wanted to buy their way into a market.Either way, the real capstone on the hearing came a day letter, when all four of those companies simultaneously announced their quarterly earnings on Thursday.<h2>The big earnings bonanza</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aapl-amzn-goog-fb-q2-earnings-big-tech-results-analysis-2020-7">Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook all blew away their earnings reports late last week</a>, with the stocks surging in after-hours trading. It wasn't entirely a clean victory for all of them, however: Amazon reported a slight miss on Amazon Web Services cloud revenue, booking $10.81 billion in sales for the quarter, versus the $11.01 billion Wall Street was looking for, demonstrating slower growth than expected. Google parent company Alphabet, meanwhile, showed its first quarterly decline in revenues for the first time ever since it went public.<div type="image" title="Sundar Pichai" height="2000" width="3000" msid="77371080" hostid="261"></div>None of this is especially surprising, given the increased reliance on services from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aapl-amzn-goog-fb-q2-earnings-big-tech-results-analysis-2020-7">all four companies in a stay-at-home, work-remotely kind of world</a>. But it's a funny sort of synchronicity that all four were able to take such a victory lap just a day after being raked over the coals by lawmakers over their size and influence. Congress may be able to shame you, but it's Wall Street that pays you.<h2>Lightning round</h2>Well, that's enough out of me. It's often harder to get stuff done with a chatbot than it is with the suite of apps and websites to which we've become accustomed. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Tay Twitter bot had a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-apologizes-for-tay-twitter-meltdown-2016-3">high-profile meltdown</a>, showing how far AI still has to go.But while Tay may have been a fiasco, Microsoft has had massive success elsewhere: The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-xiaoice-turing-test-in-china-2016-2">Xiaoice </a>chatbot - pronounced "Shao-ice" and translated as "little Bing" - born as an experiment by Microsoft Research in 2014, reaches 40 million followers in China, who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-chatbot-xiaoice-2015-8">often literally talk with her for hours</a>.At her most active, Xiaoice is holding down as many 23 conversations per second, says <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-research-peter-lee-interview-2016-8">Microsoft Research NExT leader</a> Dr. Peter Lee. It's even evolved to become a nice little sideline business for Microsoft, thanks to a partnership with Chinese e-retailer JD.com that lets users buy products by talking to Xiaoice.The reason Xiaoice is so successful is she was born of a different kind of philosophical experiment: Instead of building a chatbot that was useful, Microsoft simply tried to make it fun to talk to."I think we've all made valiant attempts to make this stuff useful," Lee says. "What if we stopped trying to be useful and just focused on chit-chat?"<h2>Chit-chat</h2>To Lee and Microsoft Research, "chit-chat" has a very specific meaning.When you ask <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-funny-siri-responses">Siri </a>or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/funny-questions-to-ask-microsoft-cortana-2015-11">Cortana </a>a silly question and get a funny response, that's "chit-chat." It doesn't serve a practical purpose, but it makes your AI assistants feel just a little warmer and friendlier.To teach Xiaoice how to make chit-chat, Microsoft trained her with every public Chinese message board and social media post they could get their hands on. By feeding Xiaoice the text from some popular Chinese frequently asked question, or FAQ, sites, she learned how to answer questions.Armed with all of that information, Xiaoice was able to hold down a conversation, which is all Microsoft Research wanted from her. It was a very "pure" experiment in optimizing for friendliness, not usefulness. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Screenshot/YouTubeMicrosoft's Xiaoice</div></div></div>Then, as she gained in popularity, Microsoft started adding features that made her a little bit more useful. Now, she can assess a user's emotional state and provide advice accordingly, going so far as to help users with breakups. With the JD.com integration, Xiaoice can suggest products and let users buy them straight from chat.If you ask her for the weather, she'll give you an answer, plus maybe a funny anecdote drawn from social media about a pop star who got caught in the rain without an umbrella. It combines the friendliness that made her so popular in the first place with stuff that actually makes her useful and a desired way to find information. Now, Xiaoice is "way less pure and way more intelligent," Lee says. In fact, a Chinese TV station has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-xiaoice-does-weather-report-on-china-tv-2015-12">even experimented with letting Xiaoice do their morning weather reports.</a>That's good news for Xiaoice's millions of users, Lee says. Still, he laments, the more Xiaoice drifts from that original goal of focusing on "chit-chat," the less useful she is to Microsoft Research as a test subject."What we've learned scientifically has faded," Lee says.<h2>Dramatic improvements</h2>What Microsoft learned from Xiaoice have led to "dramatic improvements" elsewhere. Thanks in large part to Xiaoice, Microsoft's Cortana digital agent, which comes with every copy of Windows 10, has both a lot of personality and a lot of intelligence, Lee says, and both bots are getting smarter all the time.Microsoft's Tay, which had a disastrous 24-hour run on Twitter earlier in 2016, was supposed to accelerate that science even further by bringing a similar kind of conversational-focused approach to chatbots to an English-speaking audience.While the experiment was ultimately a failure, thanks to a concentrated effort by trolls to trick Tay into saying hateful and racist things, Lee says the whole episode actually proved that Microsoft was on the right track - before she shut down, Tay was definitely doing more than the 23 conversations per second boasted by Xioaice.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://twitter.com/TayandYou">Microsoft</a></div></div></div>As tools like Microsoft's own Project Oxford and Conversations as a Platform products mature and get more complete, Lee says, developers will be able to benefit from what Microsoft has already learned the hard way from Xiaoice and Tay.On a final note, Lee notes that just because bots like Cortana are the most visible way you work with artificial intelligence today, it's an intellectual hazard to think that it's where this technology begins and ends. "There's a powerful tendency to fixate on machine learning systems that simulate human characteristics," Lee says.Instead, he reminds us to be aware of the artificial intelligence that's going to do everything from more intelligently route network traffic for faster internet connections to trading stocks and bonds. Microsoft taught a computer to make 'chit chat' - and now 40 million people love it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced businesses to adapt to remote-work environments, and some companies have turned that into new products or changes to strategy to help others ease into the transition.</li><li>Phone-booth maker Zenbooth switched from making booths to desks to help employees across the nation work from home.</li><li>Office-technology provider Minim opened its customer base from internet providers needing WiFi support to going straight to remote workers.</li><li>And other companies, like BioPure Services, PATHWATER, and ManufacturingChina.com, have scaled up production and sales to meet more demand.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></li></ul>American ingenuity is never more prevalent than during a crisis. We saw <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2016/09/10/rising-from-the-ashes-downtown-manhattan-15-years-after-911.html">the resilience of New York City businesses</a> in the weeks and months after 9/11. Now, when the whole country is in the throes of dealing with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-virus-everything-we-know-deadly-2019-ncov-wuhan-spread-2020-1">COVID-19</a>, many US companies large and small are responding with equal aplomb, rejiggering their business models to meet the new needs of the nation. Even manufacturers and suppliers, usually the hardest cog to turn within any economic engine, are making changes to support our new social-distancing, remote-work culture.<h1>Launching a product to help the new work-from-home nation</h1><a href="https://zenbooth.net/">Zenbooth</a>, the Berkeley, California-based makers of single-, double-, and quad-sized office quiet booths for phone calls and focused work, made the decision to adapt to change by doing something they've never done before - producing a desk instead of a booth. The <a href="https://zenbooth.net/products/zenstation-adjustable-desk">ZenStation</a> height-adjustable desk, which runs between $500 and $700, is the company's first product in response to the surge in home workers, and they're currently canvassing their Bay Area neighbors to see how else they can be helpful. The company forecasts sales of thousands of units of the ZenStation as soon as its supply chain stabilizes. "Zenbooth's focus has always been about making work more comfortable. In the open office, the burning problem was privacy. At home, the first burning problem is ergonomics," Zenbooth Founder and CEO Sam Johnson told Business Insider. "Most people we know were dissatisfied with their setup, and this was causing pain and will later cause injury." And so it began with the ZenStation, which Johnson also viewed as low-hanging fruit because it was within the company's skill set. "The ZenStation was also something within our capabilities - we could get it to market fast," he said. When Johnson said "fast," he wasn't kidding around. Zenbooth developed and brought the ZenStation to market in just one week once California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his <a href="https://covid19.ca.gov/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs/">shelter-in-place order</a>. "With Zenbooth, I tested a few ideas and then released the first concept within 24 hours, and sold a few within a couple of weeks, so I had the confidence we could do it again," Johnson, who funded his company entirely on the proceeds from these early sales, said. "We now have a talented team and relationships that enable us to move even faster."The one hurdle Johnson does have to cross, however, is California's aforementioned shelter-in-place restrictions, which have obviously affected his own workforce. Johnson is looking at rolling production across the country as needed to support his work-from-home customers. "This is a moving target like no other. Last Tuesday, we shut down our manufacturing operations due to Berkeley City shelter-in-place restrictions. <a href="https://www.cityofberkeley.info/uploadedFiles/Health_Human_Services/Level_3_-_Public_Health/city-of-berkeley-health-officer-order-to-shelter-in-place.pdf">Those restrictions</a> had an exception to the supply of working-from-home products and supply to other essential businesses, which we got advice we could work within," Johnson told Business Insider. Then, three hours after they put the product page up on Thursday, California released broad shelter-in-place restrictions. "We're in this for the long term, though, and we will work - safely - with our suppliers in other states to be able to produce these as restrictions are added and then lifted," he added. "We're committed to balancing health at home with following the restrictions to enable community health." Johnson takes the occasion of the pandemic to make a larger point about the importance of <a href="https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/ergonomics/">ergonomics</a> to overall well-being. "OSHA [the Occupational Safety and Health Administration] states that <a href="https://www.safeopedia.com/definition/6681/ergonomic-injury">ergonomic injuries</a> have direct costs of between $15 to $20 billion per year, with total annual costs reaching $45 to $54 billion," Johnson said. "Well, we have heard from many who have suffered after working from home for one week with issues like neck strain, and with shelter-in-place restrictions, none of those people are going to see a doctor or physiotherapist anytime soon. We expect to see a 'whiplash' of injuries and claims after the coronavirus pandemic passes."In addition to offering the ZenStation to the work-from-home audience, Zenbooth is selling their hero product to telemedicine and medical research companies that are in increased demand and need privacy to ensure confidentiality in their services. Johnson said he's examining other ways to make his company's capabilities useful in the context of this pandemic, for example, in the area of isolation rooms (often called <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/isolation/glossary.html">airborne infection isolation rooms</a>)."If the opportunity arises to help save lives, we'll definitely jump at it. But otherwise, we'll be trying to help all those working from home," Johnson said. <h1>A tech company adapts by changing its audience</h1>Going from office furnishings to office technology, Manchester, New Hampshire-based <a href="https://www.minim.co/">Minim</a> had long been working with internet service providers to provide network security, parental controls, and WiFi management tools. Then the news of the coronavirus began to spread."When the news of COVID-19 broke, we realized that the same platform we provide to ISPs could be democratized for businesses and their employees to provide secure remote working environments," Nicole Hayward, Minim's cofounder and CMO/CPO, told Business Insider. "Our solution helps remote workers who are experiencing choppy video calls, slow speeds from kids' streaming at home, and worse - the rise of targeted hacking."<a href="http://www.minim.co/remote">Minim for Remote Workers</a> was rolled out in the matter of a weekend, and the company is now offering four free months of service to people globally, which includes a Minim router, a mobile app for the employee, and a web app for the employer. "On Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, we pulled together team leadership from all departments for a few work sessions. As marketing and product leader, I prepared a product launch template that we routinely use for new product and feature rollouts," Hayward shared. "We kept it concise and honed in on the immediate needs, such as the product workflow to enable four free months of services, and how to immediately get the message out to our partners." She added, "It helped that the team was very bought into the vision; everyone contributed to the launch plan and collaborated through the weekend into the wee hours. By the time we hit Monday the 16th at about noon, we had a totally new signup path, a new section of our website, new SKUs on our ecommerce site, an automated journey, helpful handouts, an internal FAQ to help our customers, and more." Hayward noted that getting the word out around the new offering was a critically important consideration surrounding the launch. "One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that multiple leaders read our communications before they went out - to ensure we are hitting the right message and tone during this challenging time," she said. "To that end, we published a heartfelt letter to our community from our CEO, and our first sign-ups were friends and locals in the Manchester and Boston area. We are also thankful to have great investors and advisors to help us get the word out."While it's still early in the launch journey of Minim for Remote Workers, Hayward is optimistic about its success."We're still assessing target adoption," Hayward said. "But, we're really hoping that businesses will step up and take on this responsibility to support their employees. It's such a big paradigm shift for many, and remote workers shouldn't be burdened with the added stress of not being able to get work done over their WiFi. Not to mention, there's an incredibly high risk to corporate data if a single employee's network is compromised. VPN won't even help there."<h1>Other companies scale up to meet increased demand for atypical products and services </h1>"It's doing the education piece for us," <a href="https://biopureservice.com/">BioPure Services</a> President Brandon Kinder said of the impact coronavirus has made on his business, which provides hospital-grade disinfection services to homes and businesses across the Southeast. "We've now experienced how quickly something can go from a few folks in China to right here in our backyard in a matter of weeks. Germs connect us all, and we're seeing the need to change the standard of clean."With their chlorine dioxide-based spray treatment that's on the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-expands-covid-19-disinfectant-list">EPA's approved list of effective treatments against COVID-19</a> - among a lot of other nastiness - BioPure Services found itself suddenly with overflowing demand during this time of extreme economic duress. Kinder said his business has increased 75% over one month, with inquiries for services from all over the country. "Any time you set a goal of trying to change the way something has traditionally been done education is a huge piece of that, but now I'm getting a barrage of calls, emails, and voicemails more than I can answer, and that's good," Kinder, who has increased his workforce by 50% in order to handle the influx of inquiries, told Business Insider. Kinder acknowledged that people had a bit of a hard time understanding the importance of his service prior to the onset of the pandemic. "Our mission statement since we began this journey has been 'to change the standard of clean.' People are realizing that they may have been fooled - they can't clean for appearance or clean for smell, it's really about the germs. Well, we're a germ-control company, and our messaging just happens to align really well in this situation."Kinder's business, previously generally commercial in nature, has also seen a considerable uptick in residential customers looking to increase sanitization while sheltering in place and working from home. Fremont, California-based <a href="https://drinkpathwater.com/">PATHWATER</a>, which manufactures its own aluminum reusable water bottles then bottles both sparkling and still water, has experienced a 300% growth in sales over the last month. "Even with the pandemic, the majority of our country still has access to clean drinking water. PATHWATER bottles are aluminum, which are 100% recyclable in a closed-loop system, so we hope the influx of people purchasing our sustainable alternative to bottled water will at least help keep a fraction of plastic waste out of landfills over the next few months," Company CEO Amer Orabi told Business Insider.Orabi said that his company has benefited greatly from its use of technology while under California's shelter-in-place orders and observing social distancing. "Operating during shelter in place is definitely a challenge, especially from an operations standpoint. Aside from our team, our second biggest asset is technology," Orabi said. "We utilize technology in every part of our operations/fulfillment. Virtual meetings, automated order processing, and a good communication platform are all ways to increase efficiency in a remote work environment."To meet the increasing demand for bottled water, he added, the company has ramped up its production capacity by increasing efficiency and yields. "Almost all of our PATHWATER production processes are fully automated with a limited need for human involvement. Again, technology is a big difference maker for businesses in a situation like this," he said.In fact, PATHWATER has increased production by 250% in order to meet demand, and has also made a commitment to give back and help the hard-hit San Francisco region where the company is based. "We are grateful that PATHWATER hasn't been affected by COVID-19 like so many other companies and industries, and to show our support during this difficult time we are giving back to our community by donating 100,000 bottles to local food banks in the Bay Area," he said.Ron Berkes, who connects his clients with Chinese medical supply goods manufacturers through his company <a href="https://www.manufacturingchina.com/">ManufacturingChina.com</a>, is fielding a similar barrage of calls and emails."I just got a request for up to one million masks per day, up to five million masks, from a customer buying for South African medical interests, straight through <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/ronberkes/">my LinkedIn</a>," Berkes told Business Insider. "I even set up a <a href="https://wholesalerespirators.com/">special website</a> to accommodate the special medical-related inquiries I've been getting, so that I can handle these requests and not lose track of what people need and what they're asking for." Berkes, who'd previously overcome a delay in shipments from his Chinese suppliers when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-small-business-sellers-affected-by-coronavirus-inventory-shortage">factories throughout the country were shut down for weeks</a> to forestall the spread of COVID-19, said he has also been able to get clients he provides with non-medical goods to place larger orders in the interest of not running out of supplies."Honestly, the logistics in China can be a challenge even when there is not a pandemic," Berkes told Business Insider. "So I am always hedging to get my clients to order sooner or more product then what they typically want. In this case, ordering 30 to 50% more inventory has been a good decision, because we could see a lot more delays in the future."Johnson concluded, "It's sad that there has been so much political rhetoric about protecting American jobs in manufacturing over the past couple years. This will be a historical lesson that you're better off investing in the health and safety of your people rather than tariffs and walls.
