A recent study titled ‘Impact of Smartphones on Parent-Child Relationships’ sheds light on a growing concern: the excessive use of smartphones is creating barriers between parents and children in India.<br /><br />The sixth edition of the vivo Switch Off survey, conducted in collaboration with CyberMedia Research (CMR), highlights how technology, while indispensable, has become a source of conflict in family dynamics. The findings are a stark reminder of the need for balance in a world increasingly dominated by screens.<br /><br /><h2>Children are more aware of smartphone impact<br /></h2><br />One surprising revelation from the study is that children appear more aware of the negative impact of <keyword id="24400365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excessive-smartphone-use" source="keywords">excessive smartphone use</keyword> than their parents. About 69% of children acknowledged that smartphone overuse has led to conflicts with their parents, and an overwhelming 94% suggested that their ideal phone for parents should focus on basic features like calling, messaging, and a camera—stripping away apps for entertainment, gaming, or social media.<br /><br />Children also demonstrated a desire for collective change: 66% said they would give up social media if their peers did the same, while over 90% wished that some popular social media platforms had never been created.<br /><br /><h2>Parents spend more time on their phones than children<br /></h2><br />While 75% of parents worry about their children’s ability to build meaningful relationships, the irony is evident. Many parents overlook how their own smartphone habits are affecting their bond with their kids. On average, <strong>parents spend more than five hours daily on their phones, compared to four hours for children.</strong> A striking 73% of parents admit that their device use has caused friction at home.<br /><br />Even during significant moments like family vacations or celebrations, both groups confess to using their phones, underscoring how deeply ingrained this habit has become.<br /><br /><h2>Yearning for stronger bonds<br /></h2><br />Despite the challenges, there’s a shared longing for deeper connections. About 76% of children and 84% of parents expressed a wish to strengthen their relationships through meaningful family time, free from digital distractions. Both groups are exploring solutions such as creating “phone-free” zones at home and setting mutual screen-time limits.<br /><br />One-third of children believe the world would be better off without certain apps, reflecting their frustration with the digital environment they’ve grown up in. Yet, they also see hope in collective action—if their families and friends embrace healthier smartphone habits, they’re ready to follow suit.<br /><br /><h2>Expert opinion <br /></h2><br />Highlighting the issue, Riddhi Doshi Patel, a child psychologist and parenting counsellor, noted, “Excessive smartphone use is silently eroding emotional bonds between parents and children. Campaigns promoting mindful tech use aren’t just helpful; they’re transformative. Parents spend more time on their smartphones than children and this might be straining relationships, new study suggests

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Criminal gangs are helping students cheat on exams in India, according to The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam.</li></ul><p>India's massive examination machine is floundering.</p><p>This year, the country's primary testing body — the National Testing Agency (NTA) — has faced a series of controversies.</p><p>They range from exam delays and cancellations to more serious allegations of errors in questions and leaked papers.</p><p>While NTA officials have denied that any exam papers were leaked the federal education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, told the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22wl82yldo">BBC</a> in June that "some irregularities" had been found.</p><p>Now, it seems some are taking advantage of the examination chaos.</p><p>According to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/india/gangs-are-making-millions-helping-indians-cheat-on-exams-32500cce">Wall Street Journal, some middle-class families are paying criminal gangs thousands </a>to help their children get the upper hand on these exams.</p><h2 id="5266815a-7004-480f-a5ba-395977759d6c">Cheating in India's medical entrance exam</h2><p>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam, also known as the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).</p><p>This year, around 2.4 million students in India took the exam, competing for medical college seats totaling about 0.02% of that number.</p><p>"Very few people crack it on the first try," one student, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told Business Insider.</p><p>She spent a year preparing for the undergraduate and postgraduate exams, respectively. During this time, she woke up at 4 a.m. and studied for at least 10-12 hours each day.</p><p>Some prefer to take an easier route.</p><p>The Journal found that several students had paid $15,000-20,000 to illegally look at the question paper before the exam. BI could not independently verify the figures.</p><p>The police made multiple arrests related to exam cheating after results showed that 67 people received perfect scores in the NEET exams this year.</p><p>"Question papers are sold at extravagantly high prices," Ashok Rathore, a police officer who investigated cheating linked to India's medical school exam, told the Journal. "It's a nexus of desperate students, parents, tuition centers and printing presses."</p><h2 id="378edaf6-be36-458e-8847-661e66638c81">Leaked questions</h2><p>One student told BI that several Telegram channels dedicated to exam prep saw messages encouraging students "struggling with exams and don't have time for studies" to get in touch for "help."</p><p>"My friend said he was asked to pay around 15,000 rupees ($180) to enter the private channel where they shared the questions," she said.</p><p>BI reached out to the Telegram account offering "help". The person said they can provide next year's medical entrance exam questions for around 1 lakh rupees ($1,200).</p><p>High ranks in these exams mean coveted "seats" in medical colleges operated by the state and national governments. </p><p>Those with money can still legally obtain places in private medical colleges if they pay fees ranging from $115,000 to $145,000.</p><p>However, some students with the financial capacity prefer cheating and getting a government seat instead.</p><p>"It makes very good economic sense," a senior medical advisor with knowledge of the matter told BI. "The question paper will be given for about 25 lakh rupees (around $29,000). For that much, they get a free seat in a government college where they only have to pay around 16,000 rupees ($190) per annum."</p><p>"For the entire five-year degree, that still only comes to around one lakh rupees ($1191), so of course rich students would rather do that instead of paying their way into private medical schools."</p><h2 id="4ff61c3d-756d-47c9-8f47-2f6be9f1f6a0">Earning a 'merit' seat</h2><p>The advisor — who preferred to remain anonymous but whose identity is known to BI — also said there is a significant amount of respect that comes with having "earned" a merit seat instead of paying their way into a private "management" seat.</p><p>"Unfortunately, there are very few objective metrics that people have as outsiders to judge the competence of their doctors, especially at a time when everybody in India sits with an MBBS board outside their clinic," agreed Asish George, a doctor who cleared the entrance exam in 2014.</p><p>"For those people, the fact that someone cracked a highly competitive entrance exam and got in would inspire more confidence than someone who paid their way through the whole thing."</p><p>According to the Journal, authorities in India have tried to install video cameras inside exam halls and increased their monitoring of social media to catch cheaters. But many are still finding ways to illegally gain the upper hand, at a high price. </p><p>The NTA did not immediately respond to a request by BI for comment.</p>

The Reserve Bank on Thursday proposed to create a <keyword id="22711172" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-repository" source="keywords">public repository</keyword> of <keyword id="21305551" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital-lending-apps" source="keywords">digital lending apps</keyword> in a bid to address the problems arising from mushrooming <keyword id="22711171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unauthorised-players" source="keywords">unauthorised players</keyword> in the segment. In another significant move, the central bank proposed to introduce a facility of "<keyword id="22710839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delegated-Payments" source="keywords">Delegated Payments</keyword>" in UPI to enable an individual to allow another individual to make <keyword id="19957378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-transactions" source="keywords">UPI transactions</keyword>. <br /><br /> In a <keyword id="13144094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="post-monetary-policy-review" source="Orion">post-monetary policy review</keyword> address, <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> <keyword id="20595794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Governor-Shaktikanta-Das" source="keywords">Governor Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said the central bank has taken several measures for the orderly development of the <keyword id="12577431" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-lending-ecosystem" source="Orion">digital lending ecosystem</keyword> in India. <br /><br /> In a bid to address the problems arising from unauthorised digital lending apps (DLAs), he said the RBI proposes to create a public repository of DLAs deployed by its regulated entities. <br /><br /> "The regulated entities (REs) will report and update information about their DLAs in this repository. This measure will help the consumers to identify the unauthorised lending apps," Das said. <br /><br /> On introduction of 'Delegated Payments' through UPI, the Governor said the facility would enable an individual (primary user) to allow another individual (secondary user) to make UPI transactions up to a limit from the primary user's bank account without the need for the secondary user to have a separate bank account linked to UPI. <br /><br /> This, he added, will further deepen the reach and usage of digital payments. <br /><br /> The central bank also announced an increase in the transaction limit for tax payments through UPI to Rs 5 lakh. Currently, the transaction limit for UPI is Rs 1 lakh, except for certain categories of payments which have higher transaction limits. <br /><br /> "It has now been decided to enhance the limit for tax payments through UPI from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per transaction. This will further ease tax payments by consumers through UPI," Das said. <br /><br /> The Governor also announced measures to speed up cheque payment which will benefit both the payer and the payee. <br /><br /> At present, cheque clearing through Cheque Truncation System (CTS), operates in a batch-processing mode and has a clearing cycle of up to two working days. <br /><br /> "It is proposed to reduce the clearing cycle by introducing continuous clearing with 'on-realisation-settlement' in CTS," Das said. <br /><br /> This means that cheques will be cleared within a few hours on the day of presentation.

RBI to set up public repository of digital lending apps to check unauthorised players

New Delhi, The corporate affairs ministry is probing various Chinese companies, especially those with links to loan apps, for alleged violations and some of the investigations are at an advanced stage, according to a senior official.  In recent times, Indian authorities have been cracking down on entities that are operating loan apps illegally and the ministry has also been acting against companies and related individuals for hiding beneficial ownership. <br /><br /> The senior official told PTI that enquiries by the ministry are going on against various Chinese companies, especially those linked to loan apps, and some of the enquiries are at an advanced stage. <br /><br /> The ministry, which is implementing the companies law, is mainly looking at whether frauds have been committed at these companies and some of the cases are being probed by the <keyword id="20001098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="serious-fraud-investigation-office" source="keywords">Serious Fraud Investigation Office</keyword> (SFIO), the official said. <br /><br /> Further, the official said that the ministry receives complaints from the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), among other entities, following which enquiries are initiated against the companies concerned. <br /><br /> While it is difficult sometimes to track the funding sources for some companies, the official said efforts are made to ascertain the beneficial ownership. <br /><br /> In January, the Registrar of Companies (RoC), <keyword id="20064135" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nct" source="keywords">NCT</keyword> (National Capital Territory) of Delhi, and Haryana slapped penalties totalling more than Rs 21 lakh on an Indian company and its related individuals as well as entities. <br /><br /> The move was part of cracking the whip for hiding the beneficial ownership links to a Chinese group. <br /><br /> On February 6, the finance ministry informed <keyword id="19895397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parliament" source="keywords">Parliament</keyword> that Google has suspended or removed more than 2,200 fraudulent loan apps from its Play Store between September 2022 and August 2023. <br /><br /> The government is constantly engaged with the RBI and other regulators and stakeholders concerned to control fraudulent loan apps. <br /><br /> RBI has issued regulatory guidelines on digital lending, which aim at firming up the regulatory framework for digital lending while enhancing customer protection and making the digital lending ecosystem safe and sound.

The downside was that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mom-dating-men-without-kids-no-fathers-less-complicated-2024-4">meeting men in real life</a> was highly unlikely. I decided to give online dating another shot. I'd done it circa 2013, had a lot of fun, and found both long-term romances and friendships.</p><p>But, since then, the apps seemed to have changed the way dating worked. Instead of spending plenty of time on dates, like in the past, I spent most of my time on the apps having boring conversations that led nowhere. It was bad but not — yet — quite enough to make me abandon the apps and choose celibacy.</p><h2 id="14463aff-fd6d-4386-ac49-66e2f21e57cf">I was cruelly ghosted by an app hook-up</h2><p>But then, I swiped on a truly interesting, attractive guy who lived a few minutes away. On our first in-person date, he brought wine and cooked me dinner in my kitchen. I returned the favor the next time. He spontaneously told me how much he liked me and seemed genuine and affectionate. Until, after three dates in three weeks, he suddenly ghosted me completely, including pointedly turning in the opposite direction on the street whenever we ran into each other.</p><p>With no friends in common, nor real-life links, it was easy for him to cut me dead. Hurt and with my self-confidence knocked, I deleted all the apps soon after. If they were the only game in town, I wasn't playing.</p><p>This is a big part of why <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bumble-billboard-ads-celibacy-not-answer-dating-backlash-tiktok-2024-5">Bumble's recent ad campaign</a> got it so wrong. The campaign featured billboards with messages that included: "You know full well a vow of celibacy is not the answer." Another one read: "Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun."</p><p>Celibacy and a different approach to dating are, to me, the only answers to the kind of dehumanizing behavior the apps today provoke. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bumble-ceo-rethinks-if-women-required-message-first-2024-3">Bumble</a> has since removed the ads and vowed to make donations to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.</p><p>Instead of apps, I've found a real-life way to date, one that is about quality and meaningful connection and that works for me, even if it has meant celibate periods of up to two years at a time.</p><h2 id="f29cb7a2-64c2-48fb-8dbe-5d6b9f36f699">Old friends make amazing new partners</h2><p>It started with a friend of 10 years. We'd always been close, and when I was newly single, he invited me to visit him in Ireland. In texts, he came right out and suggested we hook up. At first, I was coy, then curious, then enjoying the flirtation because I knew it was safe to. When I arrived, I had to let myself into his flat with a key he had hidden because he was away. He was due to get back a few hours after me, by which time I was asleep in his bed — that's how secure and relaxed I was.</p><p>Fast forward a sex-free year-and-a-half to when a friend of about 14 years, who'd always held a candle for me, invited me to Istanbul. It didn't work out as we weren't sexually compatible, but we're still friends. Why wouldn't we be after all those years and history?</p><p>Almost two celibate years later, another longtime friend of friends re-entered my life. We'd been on a couple of dinner-only dates nine years earlier which turned out to be the basis for a wonderful, weekend-long third date. But, since single parenting and work take up most of my time, it would be hard to meet anyone new. And slow and celibate is my choice over the apps.</p><p>That the friendship is — or was at some point — solid is essential to me. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-dating-trend-online-apps-friends-romantic-partners-relationships-2023-3">Dating apps</a> throw people together with none of the social glue that binds us in our IRL trusted networks. Some guy who swiped right is basically a complete stranger, even after a few dates or sleeping together. If I don't know his family or friends, and he doesn't know mine, who even is he? And, more importantly, who am I to him?</p><p>I trust men I have a history with even if I don't expect, or necessarily want, us to be together forever. But I know these long friendships, and even the acquaintances that are meshed into my friends and family, aren't going to disappear overnight. I trust that someone who has stayed in touch ever since we met will continue to care enough to check in and see how I'm doing.</p><p>Some people might call this style of dating "friends with benefits," but I don't. All too often, that's shorthand for a shallow, no-commitment hookup. But the way I see it, the friendship is the benefit. And long may I benefit from this kind of relationship, even with its lengthy periods of celibacy. In addition to Chinese apps, the ban included Indian ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ (BNPL) apps such as LazyPay and Kissht.<br /><br />Out of the 232 apps banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information &amp; Technology (MeitY), 138 are betting and gambling apps and 94 are quick-loan-providing apps.<br /><br />According to a<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/govt-blocks-232-foreign-apps-including-chinese-for-gambling-money-laundering/articleshow/97620408.cms"> report</a> by Economic Times, the government has said that the apps have been banned as they contain materials “prejudicial” to the sovereignty and integrity of India. “These apps contained material which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India,” an official familiar with the matter said.<br /><br />While some of the apps banned have Chinese links, the list also includes Indian applications such as LazyPay and Kissht.
