Have you ever pondered how the world appears through the peepers of a bee, a bird, or even a reindeer? Thanks to a new <keyword id="6364276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="camera" source="Orion">camera</keyword> system and software developed by boffins specialising in <keyword id="48644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="colour" source="Orion">colour</keyword> vision, we can now take a step closer to experiencing this fascinating phenomenon ourselves. While we've learned to combine and weaponise colours in a myriad of ways to create fascinating outcomes, the fact remains that our human eyes are still severely limited in the spectrum of light they can perceive. More specifically, we miss out on the ultraviolet range that many animals, like bees and birds, can see with ease. But that doesn't mean that we're objectively "underdeveloped" in that ocular race, either. Humans have receptors for red light that many animals, including mice and dogs, lack. And even if we compare ourselves with species who only perceive colours within light's visible spectrum, the violet to red section of electromagnetic radiation, the "blueness" of the sky or the "greenness" of a leaf are luxuries only specific to our sensory system. Now, with this innovative camera system, we can capture <keyword id="21654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="video" source="Orion">video</keyword> footage in "animal-view" colours. This means we can visualise how the world might appear to different species, taking into account their unique range of light sensitivity and colour perception. However, the fact that our eyes aren't equipped to look for colours beyond the visible spectrum means we have to make certain approximations to actually observe the ultraviolet sections of light — what scientists call "false colour imaging". This technique involves shifting an <keyword id="38741" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="animal" source="Orion">animal</keyword>'s perceivable colours into the human visible range, such as representing ultraviolet as blue and blue as green — slight shifts in the actual colours, but more representational of the overarching way animals might perceive them. But capturing movement with this method was impossible, as it required taking multiple photos with different filters, which wouldn't work with a moving scene. The key breakthrough came with the use of a beamsplitter, a specialised optical device that reflects ultraviolet light while allowing <keyword id="1353216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="visible-light" source="Orion">visible light</keyword> to pass through. This enabled the scientists to simultaneously record both ultraviolet and visible light in a single video stream, using two commonly available cameras housed in a 3D-printed casing. By overlaying and synchronising the recordings from both cameras, the researchers could calculate the amount of light each camera's sensor received. This data then served as the basis for estimating how much light would reach the eyes of an animal observing the scene from the camera's vantage point. A computer would then use this information to colour-transpose things into animal-view that we can perceive. While we may never fully comprehend how animals experience the world, this new technology allows us to see it through their eyes to a remarkable degree. Imagine watching a bird flitting through a forest, its vision ablaze with ultraviolet hues invisible to us. Or observing a bee navigating a field of flowers, each bloom glowing with a unique spectrum of colours beyond our human grasp.

For years they were restricted to the secretive world of spies, but with Google Earth and the release of pictures from space by Nasa and other space agencies, satellite images are now available to everyone.
Satellite images can now reveal how our cities are changing in real time, how crops are growing and, as witnessed in the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/philippines/10440193/Typhoon-Haiyan-world-sends-relief-to-battered-Philippines.html">Philippines</a>, when a storm is coming - but only if you know what to look for.
But really understanding the pictures and unlocking their rich stream of information is a complex task.
Now, <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/?eocn=topnav&amp;eoci=logo">NASA's Earth Observatory</a> has provided <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/ColorImage/?src=features-recent">five key tips</a> for helping people to make sense of satellite images.
<h3>1) Look for a scale:</h3>
Most of us will find the first thing we want to do when looking at a satellite image is identify the places familiar to you.
Some images from military or commercial satellites are detailed enough to reveal, for example, homes, schools and places of work. The satellites zoom in on small areas to collect fine details but in the process sacrifice the big picture.
NASA satellites take the opposite approach. Earth science researchers typically want a wide-angle lens to see whole ecosystems or atmospheric fronts.
Like digital photographs, satellite images are made up of pixels. The most detailed NASA images show 10 meters in each pixel.
Geostationary weather satellites, which observe a whole hemisphere at a time, are much less detailed, seeing one to four kilometers in a pixel.
You can learn different things at each scale. When tracking a flood, a detailed, high-resolution view will show which homes and businesses are surrounded by water. The wider landscape view shows which parts of the county are flooded and where the water is coming from.
<h3>2) Look for patterns, shapes, and textures:</h3>
Bodies of water - rivers, lakes, and oceans - are often the simplest features to identify because they tend to have unique shapes and they show up on maps.
Farms usually have geometric shapes - circles or rectangles - that stand out. According to NASA, a straight line anywhere in an image is almost certainly human-made.
Geology shapes the landscape in ways that are often easier to see in a satellite image. Volcanoes and craters are circular, and mountain ranges tend to run in long, sometimes wavy lines. Geologic features create visible textures. Canyons are squiggly lines framed by shadows. Mountains look like wrinkles or bumps.
These features can also affect clouds by influencing the flow of air in the atmosphere. Mountains force air up, where it cools and forms clouds. Islands create turbulence that results in swirling vortices or wakes in the clouds. When you see a line of clouds or vortices, they provide a clue about the topography of the land below.
<h3>3) Define the colours:</h3>
The colors in an image will depend on what kind of light the satellite instrument measured. True-color images use visible light - red, green and blue wavelengths - so the colours are similar to what a person would see from space. False-color images incorporate infrared light and may take on unexpected colors. In a true color image, common features appear as follows:
Sunlight reflecting off the surface of the water makes the water look gray, silver, or white. This phenomenon, known as sunglint, can highlight wave features or oil slicks, but it also masks the presence of sediment or phytoplankton.
Plants come in different shades of green, and those differences show up in the true-color view from space. Grasslands tend to be pale green, while forests are very dark green. Land used for agriculture is often much brighter in tone than natural vegetation.
<h3>4) Find north:</h3>
When you get lost, the simplest way to figure out where you are is to find a familiar landmark and orient yourself with respect to it. The same technique applies to satellite images. If you know where north is, you can figure out if that mountain range is running north to south or east to west, or if a city is on the east side of the river or the west.
<h3>5) Consider your own knowledge:</h3>
Perhaps the most powerful tool for interpreting a satellite image is knowledge of the place. If you know that a wildfire burned through a forest last year, it's easy to figure out that the dark brown patch of forest is probably a burn scar, not a volcanic flow or shadow.

Marketed as <keyword id="22543566" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sunscreen-pills" source="keywords">sunscreen pills</keyword>, this product is marketed as a sure-fire way of skipping the mess and effort associated with conventional sunscreens while still getting <keyword id="19958769" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sun-protection" source="keywords">sun protection</keyword>. But as is the case with most fads, this one comes with a catch, too. Sigh. Let's face it, sunscreen pills sound undeniably attractive — imagine popping a pill and being able to frolic in the sun without a care in the world. No more reapplying gooey lotions or worrying about unsightly tan lines. This convenience factor is a major draw, especially for those who dislike traditional sunscreen. <h2>But is there any science behind the sizzle?</h2>These pills often contain <keyword id="22543569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="polypodium-leucotomos" source="Orion">polypodium leucotomos</keyword> (PL), a Central American fern extract with some antioxidant properties. When the Sun's invisible rays (UV light) hit your skin and disrupt its molecules, they create unstable and highly reactive molecules called free radicals. Free radicals set off a damaging chain reaction, or oxidation, that hurts your skin's DNA and proteins. This damage can lead to premature ageing, inflammation and even <keyword id="20285616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skin-cancer" source="keywords">skin cancer</keyword>. So the antioxidant property of PL can allegedly help fight free radical damage caused by the sun's <keyword id="20373638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UV-rays" source="keywords">UV rays</keyword>. The brand Heliocare actually funded a tiny <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4345929/">study</a> involving 40 participants with skin colours ranging from white to light brown. They gave participants a supplement containing 240 mg of PL twice a day for 60 days and found that the sunscreen pills had reduced damaging effects of UV radiation like erythema — an abnormal redness. While the study also deemed higher doses of PL safe, the lack of more substantial, independent research is rather glaring. While they might be a good “supplement” for individuals with very sensitive skin or any family history of skin cancer (to be considered only after consultation with your doctor), many experts opine that they likely offer minimal, if any, protection against the full spectrum of UVA and UVB rays that damage your skin. As of now, dermatologists emphasise that sunscreen pills are not a replacement for <keyword id="22543567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="topical-sunscreen" source="keywords">topical sunscreen</keyword> — and are merely supplements. <h2>A false sense of security</h2>The problem with marketing based on half-baked research with very little evidence to back its effectiveness is that it can spark some serious safety concerns. It has taken doctors forever to beat sense into us and get us to use topical sunscreen, and the false sense of security created by a <keyword id="22543570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sunscreen-pill" source="Orion">sunscreen pill</keyword> can take all of that away. Even the FDA has warned consumers that sunscreen pills shouldn't replace topical sunscreen. Relying solely on pills puts you at risk for sunburn and potentially skin cancer. Another concern is that sunscreen pills are considered dietary supplements, which are not as rigorously regulated as medications. This makes it difficult to guarantee the effectiveness and safety of the ingredients, especially since long-term use hasn't been thoroughly studied. <h2>Sunscreen pills don’t seem very inclusive</h2>While there aren't many reported side effects, some studies have shown mild itching or gastrointestinal upset. However, there are certain groups who should be extra cautious with sunscreen pills: <ul><li>Children: Their bodies may react differently to supplements compared to adults.</li><li>Pregnant and nursing women: There's no safety data available for this population.</li><li>People with allergies to PL: Avoid these pills to prevent allergic reactions.</li><li>People with medical conditions or taking medications: Consult your doctor to ensure there are no interactions or safety concerns.</li></ul>Evidently, there’s a relatively small number of people who can benefit from sunscreen pills. <h2>The verdict</h2>The potential of sunscreen pills is not lost on us. More research is needed to determine their effectiveness and long-term safety. Until then, sunscreens remain the gold standard for sun protection. Sunscreen pills could be a convenient addition to your sun protection routine, but they should never replace the essentials. Sticking to dermatologist-approved methods is highly recommended. In yet another case of food contamination, five samples from five different outlets of US fast food retail giant <keyword id="6376241" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="KFC">KFC</keyword> have been found to contain harmful <keyword id="52657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="pathogens">pathogens</keyword>, <keyword id="396235" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="salmonella">salmonella</keyword> and <keyword id="101875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="E-coli">E Coli</keyword> bacteria, reported TOI. The <keyword id="2920393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telangana-State-Food-Laboratory">Telangana State Food Laboratory</keyword> (SFL), which conducted the test on the request of NGO Balala Hakula Sangham, called the samples "unsafe". The US fast food giant, however, rejected the findings and denied any knowledge of the samples being collected from its outlets. The SFL is a part of the Hyderabad-based <keyword id="177658" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Institute-of-Preventive-Medicine">Institute of Preventive Medicine</keyword>. The report, dated June 24, filed by SFL food analyst AV <keyword id="346457" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Krishna-Kumari">Krishna Kumari</keyword> said: "I am of the opinion that the samples contain E.Coli and salmonella, which are pathogens and injurious to health. It is, therefore, unsafe." 

	"We took the samples from Himayatnagar, Vidyanagar, Chikkadpally, Nacharam and ECIL X Road on June 18 and sent it to the state food laboratory the same day in packed and sealed condition in the original KFC snack box," Anuradha Rao, president of the NGO, told TOI. 
 

	KFC in turn questioned the conditions under which the samples were taken for the test. KFC further said it did not receive any intimation from any authority over the issue. 
 

	It said in a statement: "This alleged report is a case of false allegation. We have no knowledge of the sample being collected from any of our stores and in what condition it has been transported for this alleged test. This is a perishable food item meant for immediate consumption." 
 On Thursday, the NGO at a press conference quoted the report where <keyword id="2920392" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSL-food-analyst">FSL food analyst</keyword> AV Krishna Kumari specifically sought to clear doubts of any tampering by stating: "Sample received in sealed and labeled card box kept in brown colour paper." While the NGO sought an immediate ban on KFC products, K Balaji Raju, the designated food safety officer (DFSO) in charge of central zone of <keyword id="75378" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Greater-Hyderabad-Municipal-Corporation">Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation</keyword> (GHMC) clarified that his department cannot take action if food samples are tested independently by an NGO. 

	"Only when the food samples lifted by our department turns out to be positive in food safety lab for any contamination, it can result in an action against the defaulter from our side," he said.

KFC food samples contain harmful bacteria: Govt. report

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62UhUZp8sZg">www.youtube.com</a>Cuauhtémoc Gutiérrez de la Torre gesticulates.</div></div></div>IT DIDN'T take long for Mexico's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to react to the seriousness of the sex scandal erupting around it on April 2nd. Just hours after Cuauhtémoc Gutiérrez de la Torre, the party's president in Mexico City, publicly denied a report that he kept a network of prostitutes on the party payroll for his personal use, the PRI put him on leave and called for a police investigation.
The story by MVS News, one of Mexico's most influential radio programmes, is colourful and the allegations it makes are potentially very sordid. Mr Gutiérrez, as heavy-set as an ox, comes from a family that made a fortune on Mexico City's rubbish tips. His murdered father (a former PRI stalwart) was known as the "King of Rubbish". Heading the PRI in Mexico City is the highest office he has held, although the party has not ruled there since 1997. His office issued a statement saying the MVS report was "deceitful, ill-intentioned and slanderous" and that Mr Gutiérrez himself wanted an investigation.
According to MVS, the women at the heart of its report are known as edecanes, or hostesses. In their short skirts and high heels, they are a common feature of political and business gatherings in Mexico. Mostly their job is to hand out brochures or accompany people to their seats.
MVS said that after a tip-off, a female reporter answered an advertisement for a hostess job in Mr Gutiérrez's office at PRI headquarters in Mexico City. It aired what it said were secretly taped recordings in which a woman it claims worked for Mr Gutiérrez can be heard telling the undercover reporter the job requires her to provide sex--"oral or vaginal"--when her boss asks for it, as well as more normal hostess duties. The tape recordings include discussion of salary--11,000 pesos ($850) a month, tax-free, plus tips--and the reporter is told she will be on the PRI's payroll. "It's absolute discretion, because obviously he protects his image," the female voice tells the reporter.
Speaking on air to MVS News, Mr Gutiérrez described the report as "false as all falseness" and said there were no hostesses on the PRI payroll. He was not asked whether the woman on the tape was his employee.
The scandal immediately lit up the airwaves and social-media sites. It puts the PRI in an awkward spot. The party, which ruled Mexico for much of the 20th century, often according to rules it set for itself, returned to power nationwide in 2012 with the election of President Enrique Peña Nieto. It is keen to put its sleazy past behind it. But given the murky relationship between politics and justice in Mexico, investigations often lack credibility. People believe what they choose.

Sex, Politics, And A Headache For Mexico's PRI

The <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/oneplus-one-1244307/review">OnePlus One</a> came out of nowhere as the first product of a new company, but it didn't disappoint, thanks to high end specs and a surprisingly low price tag.

	One of the biggest complaints we could level at it was how hard it was to get hold of at launch and when that's the biggest problem a phone is facing you know you've got a winner on your hands.
 But while there were no expectations for the <keyword id="2210218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="oneplus-one">OnePlus One</keyword> hopes are sky high for the OnePlus 2, so it's got a lot to live up to.

	News and rumors</h3>
 We don't know a huge amount about the <keyword id="2414483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="OnePlus-Two">OnePlus Two</keyword> yet, but it's supposedly set to land during <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-two-gets-a-new-name-but-it-s-facing-delays-1282103">the third quarter of 2015</a>.

	There are rumblings that it could have <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-2-could-get-a-metal-makeover-1287338">a premium metal build</a>, while <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-two-might-get-a-quadhd-display-and-snapdragon-810-1280992">specs are rumored to include</a> a 5.5-inch QHD screen, a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 3300 mAh battery and <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-two-rumours-point-to-another-big-screened-beast-1275546">older reports point to</a> a 16MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing snapper.

	While we know it will land with <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-oxygen-os-arrives-in-march-but-you-ll-have-to-install-it-yourself-1284525">OxygenOS</a> almost certainly paired with <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/software/operating-systems/android-5-0-lollipop-1271651/review">Android Lollipop</a> and perhaps most intriguingly of all it's set to '<a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-two-will-surprise-people-but-there-are-no-plans-for-a-tablet-1279648">surprise people</a>'.

	Of course all the rumors that we've heard could turn out to be false and there's still plenty that we don't know, so here's what we want to see.
<h3>
	1. A more premium build</h3>

	

	The OnePlus One is a top tier handset, but it doesn't look like a top tier handset so we really hope the OnePlus Two will have a more premium build.

	The obvious choice here is metal, which there are <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-2-could-get-a-metal-makeover-1287338">rumors we'll see</a> this time around, but we'd be just as happy with something like bamboo. The OnePlus One briefly had bamboo back covers available, but manufacturing issues meant they were discontinued and this time we'd like to see them included as standard.

	2. A similarly low price</h3>

	One of the biggest selling points of the OnePlus One is its relatively low price tag, as it starts at just £229, $299. That price hasn't gone down since launch, so it's slightly less impressive now than it once was, but it's less than half the cost of most flagships.

	If the specs and build are improved as is likely then there's <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-2-could-get-a-metal-makeover-1287338">a good chance</a> that the OnePlus 2 will also be more expensive, but if it is then we hope not by much.
<h3>
	3. A microSD card slot</h3>

	Cut corners are always likely to be necessary when delivering a phone as good value as the OnePlus One and one of them was the omission of a microSD card slot.

	We can't be too hard on it when phones twice its price, like the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s6-1285636/review">Samsung Galaxy S6</a>, also lack such a slot, but we'd love to see one included in the OnePlus Two so that storage is less limited.

	Or at the very least an option for more internal memory. The 64GB available in some versions of the OnePlus One is pretty generous, but we're sure it could be increased to 128GB.
<h3>
	4. A removable battery</h3>

	

	Another slight disappointment with the OnePlus One was that the battery isn't removable. That's the case with a lot of phones and the OnePlus One does at least have quite good battery life.

	But if you're a power user it's nice to know you can swap the battery out if needed and perhaps even more importantly it means you can replace the battery when yours wears out rather than having to buy a whole new phone.

	5. Even better specs</h3>

	With its 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM the One is undeniably a powerful phone and back when it launched in June 2014 it was one of the most powerful handsets on the planet.

	But by the time the OnePlus Two launches it will be around a year old and time moves fast in the tech world, with octa-core processors now the norm among flagships. So at a minimum we hope the OnePlus 2 will keep pace with the latest and greatest phones around.

	The obvious setup for that would be to have an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM, just like the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/htc-one-m9-1285623/review">HTC One M9</a>, but if OnePlus feels like it wants to overpower the competition we won't complain. <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-two-might-get-a-quadhd-display-and-snapdragon-810-1280992">4GB of RAM anyone</a>?
<h3>
	6. The same size screen</h3>

	

	This might seem odd but we don't want the screen to get any bigger. The OnePlus One already has a 5.5-inch display and that's pushing the limits of usability as it is. In fact we wouldn't complain if the screen on the OnePlus Two was slightly smaller.

	That's not to say that we wouldn't like to see improvements though. OnePlus could always up the resolution to QHD (assuming the battery life doesn't take too much of a hit) and as good as the screen on the One is things like contrast and colour reproduction can always be improved.

	7. A top flight camera</h3>

	

	The 13MP shooter on the OnePlus One is more than adequate but even at launch it wasn't one of the best smartphone snappers around and the gulf has only widened since.

	So with the OnePlus 2 we'd like to see some improvements. The OnePlus One seems a little slow to autofocus, so a fix for that would be appreciated, whether through a new system like a laser autofocus or just through software optimisation.

	More megapixels and optical image stabilisation would both be nice too, but they don't always lead to better photos, which is what we want. How that will be achieved is down to OnePlus to figure out.

	8. A powerful UI</h3>

	
 The UI on the OnePlus One was worthy of special mention, because it used CyanogenMod, which on the surface looks quite close to stock <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword>, but there's a whole lot of power and customisation options tucked away for more adventurous users.

	Sadly OnePlus has had a bit of a falling out with Cyanogen, so a new home-grown UI dubbed OxygenOS will be replacing it on the OnePlus 2 and we hope it will be every bit as powerful and intuitive.
<h3>
	9. Water and dust proofing</h3>

	Water and dust proofing is a feature which we've never felt is essential on phones as we stopped pond diving years ago, but it's still nice to have if it doesn't come at the expense of anything else and it would be one more bullet point in the OnePlus Two's favour.

	We doubt we'll see it, mostly because it could push the cost up and a low price surely takes priority, but also because a metal build is looking likely and not many metal phones seem to be waterproof.

	10. A killer feature</h3>

	

	Price and specs go a long way towards selling a smartphone, but for the OnePlus Two to really stand out and not just feel like a rehash of the OnePlus One a big feature would help.

	That could take any number of forms. OnePlus could follow other manufacturer's leads and have a curved screen like the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-1286088/review">Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge</a> and <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/lg-g-flex-2-1263346/review">LG G Flex 2</a>, or it could pack in serious fitness credentials with a heart rate monitor and the tools to track your progress. Or it could add a fingerprint scanner like Apple and Samsung have been doing.

	But to stand out even more it could include something we've not seen anywhere else. Perhaps a retina scanner for example.

	It probably won't have any big features like that, because cost is key, but if it did and if the cost could still be kept down then the OnePlus 2 could be a true flagship killer.

OnePlus Two: What we want to see?

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.clevcode.org/cicada-3301/">3301</a></div></div></div>For the past two years, a mysterious online organisation has been setting the world's finest code-breakers a series of seemingly unsolveable problems. But to what end? Welcome to the world of Cicada 3301
One evening in January last year, Joel Eriksson, a 34-year-old computer analyst from Uppsala in Sweden, was trawling the web, looking for distraction, when he came across a message on an internet forum. The message was in stark white type, against a black background.
"Hello," it said. "We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in this image. Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few that will make it all the way through. Good luck."
The message was signed: "3301".
A self-confessed IT security "freak" and a skilled cryptographer, Eriksson's interest was immediately piqued. This was - he knew - an example of digital steganography: the concealment of secret information within a digital file. Most often seen in conjunction with image files, a recipient who can work out the code - for example, to alter the colour of every 100th pixel - can retrieve an entirely different image from the randomised background "noise".
It's a technique more commonly associated with nefarious ends, such as concealing child pornography. In 2002 it was suggested that al-Qaeda operatives had planned the September 11 attacks via the auction site eBay, <a href="http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/2001-02-05-binladen.htm">by encrypting messages inside digital photographs</a> .
Sleepily - it was late, and he had work in the morning - Eriksson thought he'd try his luck decoding the message from "3301". After only a few minutes work he'd got somewhere: a reference to "Tiberius Claudius Caesar" and a line of meaningless letters.
Joel deduced it might be an embedded "Caesar cipher" - an encryption technique named after Julius Caesar, who used it in private correspondence. It replaces characters by a letter a certain number of positions down the alphabet. As Claudius was the fourth emperor, it suggested "four" might be important - and lo, within minutes, Eriksson found another web address buried in the image's code.
Feeling satisfied, he clicked the link.
It was a picture of a duck with the message: "Woops! Just decoys this way. Looks like you can't guess how to get the message out."
"If something is too easy or too routine, I quickly lose interest," says Eriksson. "But it seemed like the challenge was a bit harder than a Caesar cipher after all. I was hooked."
Eriksson didn't realise it then, but he was embarking on one of the internet's most enduring puzzles; a scavenger hunt that has led thousands of competitors across the web, down telephone lines, out to several physical locations around the globe, and into unchartered areas of the "darknet".
So far, the hunt has required a knowledge of number theory, philosophy and classical music. An interest in both cyberpunk literature and the Victorian occult has also come in handy as has an understanding of Mayan numerology.
It has also featured a poem, a tuneless guitar ditty, a femme fatale called "Wind" who may, or may not, exist in real life, and a clue on a lamp post in Hawaii. Only one thing is certain: as it stands, no one is entirely sure what the challenge - known as Cicada 3301 - is all about or who is behind it.
Depending on who you listen to, it's either a mysterious secret society, a statement by a new political think tank, or an arcane recruitment drive by some quasi-military body. Which means, of course, everyone thinks it's the CIA.
For some, it's just a fun game, like a more complicated Sudoku; for others, it has become an obsession. Almost two years on, Eriksson is still trying to work out what it means for him. "It is, ultimately, a battle of the brains," he says. "And I have always had a hard time resisting a challenge."
On the night of January 5 2012, after reading the "decoy" message from the duck, Eriksson began to tinker with other variables.
Taking the duck's mockery as a literal clue, Eriksson decided to run it through a decryption program called OutGuess. Success: another hidden message, this time linking to another messageboard on the massively popular news forum <a href="http://www.reddit.com/">Reddit</a> .
Here, encrypted lines from a book were being posted every few hours. But there were also strange symbols comprising of several lines and dots - Mayan numbers, Eriksson realised. And duly translated, they led to another cipher.
Up until now, Eriksson would admit, none of the puzzles had really required any advanced skills, or suggested anything other than a single anonymous riddle-poser having some fun. "But then it all changed," says Eriksson. "And things started getting interesting."
Suddenly, the encryption techniques jumped up a gear. And the puzzles themselves mutated in several different directions: hexadecimal characters, reverse-engineering, prime numbers. Pictures of the cicada insect - reminiscent of the moth imagery in Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs - became a common motif.
"I knew cicadas only emerge every prime number of years - 13, or 17 - to avoid synchronising with the life cycles of their predators," says Eriksson. "It was all starting to fit together." The references became more arcane too. The book, for example, turned out to be "The Lady of the Fountain", a poem about King Arthur taken from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogion">The Mabinogion</a>, a collection of pre-Christian medieval Welsh manuscripts.
Later, the puzzle would lead him to the cyberpunk writer William Gibson - specifically his 1992 poem "Agrippa" (a book of the dead), infamous for the fact that it was only published on a 3.5in floppy disk, and <a href="http://agrippa.english.ucsb.edu/">was programmed to erase itself after being read once</a>.
But as word spread across the web, thousands of amateur codebreakers joined the hunt for clues. Armies of users of <a href="http://www.4chan.org/">4chan</a>, the anarchic internet forum where the first Cicada message is thought to have appeared, pooled their collective intelligence - and endless free time - to crack the puzzles.
Within hours they'd decoded "The Lady of the Fountain". The new message, however, was another surprise: "Call us," it read, "at telephone number 214-390-9608". By this point, only a few days after the original image was posted, Eriksson had taken time off work to join the pursuit full time.
"This was definitely an unexpected turn," he recalls. "And the first hint that this might not just be the work of a random internet troll." Although now disconnected, the phone line was based in Texas, and led to an answering machine. There, a robotic voice told them to find the prime numbers in the original image. By multiplying them together, the solvers found a new prime and a new website: 845145127.com. A countdown clock and a huge picture of a cicada confirmed they were on the right path.
"It was thrilling, breathtaking by now," says Eriksson. "This shared feeling of discovery was immense. But the plot was about to thicken even more." Once the countdown reached zero, at 5pm GMT on January 9, it showed 14 GPS coordinates around the world: locations in Warsaw, Paris, Seattle, Seoul, Arizona, California, New Orleans, Miami, Hawaii and Sydney. Sat in Sweden, Eriksson waited as, around the globe, amateur solvers left their apartments to investigate. And, one by one reported what they'd found: a poster, attached to a lamp post, bearing the cicada image and a QR code (the black-and-white bar code often seen on adverts these days and designed to take you to a website via your smartphone).
"It was exhilarating," said Eriksson. "I was suddenly aware of how much effort they must have been putting into creating this kind of challenge." For the growing Cicada community, it was explosive - proof this wasn't merely some clever neckbeard in a basement winding people up, but actually a global organisation of talented people. But who?
Speculation had been rife since the image first appeared. Some thought Cicada might merely be a PR stunt; a particularly labyrinthine Alternate Reality Game (ARG) built by a corporation to ultimately - and disappointingly - promote a new movie or car.
Microsoft, for example, had enjoyed huge success with their critically acclaimed "I Love Bees" ARG campaign. Designed to promote the Xbox game Halo 2 in 2004, it used random payphones worldwide to broadcast a War of the Worlds-style radio drama that players would have to solve.
But there were complicating factors to Cicada. For one, the organisers were actively working against the participants. One "solver", a female known only as Wind from Michigan, contributed to the quest on several messageboards before the community spotted she was deliberately disseminating false clues. Other interference was more pointed.
One long, cautionary diatribe, left anonymously on the website Pastebin, claimed to be from an ex-Cicada member - a non-English military officer recruited to the organisation "by a superior". Cicada, he said, "was a Left-Hand Path religion disguised as a progressive scientific organisation" - comprising of "military officers, diplomats, and academics who were dissatisfied with the direction of the world". Their plan, the writer claimed, was to transform humanity into the Nietzschen Übermensch.
"This is a dangerous organisation," he concluded, "their ways are nefarious." With no other clues, it was also asssumed by many to be a recruitment drive by the CIA, MI6 or America's National Security Agency (NSA), as part of a search for highly talented cryptologists. It wouldn't have been the first time such tactics had been used.
Back in 2010, for example, Air Force Cyber Command - the United States' hacking defence force, based at Fort Meade in Maryland - secretly embedded a complex hexadecimal code in their new logo. Cybercom head Lt Gen Keith Alexander then challenged the world's amateur analysts to crack it ( <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9179004/Researcher_cracks_secret_code_in_U.S._Cyber_Command_logo">it took them three hours</a> ). And in September this year, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/10301435/Can-you-crack-the-code-GCHQ-unveils-fiendish-puzzle-for-new-recruits.html">GCHQ launched the "Can You Find It?" initiative</a> - a series of cryptic codes designed to root out the best British cryptographers. As GCHQ's head of resourcing Jane Jones said at the time, "It's a puzzle but it's also a serious test - the jobs on offer here are vital to protecting national security."
Dr Jim Gillogly, former president of the American Cryptogram Association, has been cracking similar codes for years and says it's a tried and tested recruitment tactic.
"During the Second World War, the top-secret Government Code and Cypher School used crossword puzzles printed in The Daily Telegraph to identify good candidates for Bletchley Park," he says. "But I'm not sure the CIA or NSA is behind Cicada. Both are careful with security, the recent Snowden case notwithstanding. And starting the puzzle on [the anarchic internet forum] 4chan might attract people with less respect for authority than they would want working inside."
But that doesn't rule out other organisations. "Computer and data security is more important than ever today," says Dr Gillogly. The proliferation of wireless devices, mobile telephones, e-commerce websites like Amazon and chip-and-pin machines, means the demand for cryptologists has never been higher. (Something the UK government acknowledged last year when it announced it was setting up <a href="http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/research/centres/Pages/acecybersecurity.aspx">11 academic "centres of excellence" in cyber security research</a> .)
"One of the more important components of security systems is the efficacy of the cryptography being used," says Dr Gillogly. "Which means cryptanalysts are in higher demand than ever before - no longer just with the intelligence services. It could just as easily be a bank or software company [behind Cicada]."
Eriksson himself agrees. As a regular speaker at Black Hat Briefings - the secretive computer security conferences where government agencies and corporations get advice from hackers - he knows certain organisations occasionally go "fishing" for new recruits like this. But to him the signs point to a recruitment drive by a hacker group like Anonymous.
"I can't help but notice," he says, "that the locations in question are all places with some of the most talented hackers and IT security researchers in the world." Either way, their identity would prove irrelevant. When the QR codes left on the lamp posts were decoded, a hidden message pointed the solvers towards a TOR address.
TOR, short for The Onion Router, is an obscure routing network that allows anonymous access to the "darknet" - the vast, murky portion of the internet that cannot be indexed by standard search engines. <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/10456108/David-Cameron-wins-FBI-support-for-dark-web-war-on-paedophiles.html">Estimated to be 5,000 times larger that the "surface" web</a>, it's in these recesses where you'll find human-trafficking rings, black market drug markets and terrorist networks. And it's here where the Cicada path ended.
After a designated number of solvers visited the address, the website shut down with a terse message: "We want the best, not the followers." The chosen few received personal emails - detailing what, none have said, although one solver heard they were now being asked to solve puzzles in private. Eriksson, however, was not among them. "It was my biggest anticlimax - when I was too late to register my email at the TOR hidden service," he says. "If my sleep-wake cycle had been different, I believe I would have been among the first." Regardless, a few weeks later, a new message from Cicada was posted on Reddit. It read: "Hello. We have now found the individuals we sought. Thus our month-long journey ends. For now." All too abruptly for thousands of intrigued solvers, it had gone quiet.
Except no. On January 4 this year, something new. A fresh image, with a new message in the same white text: "Hello again. Our search for intelligent individuals now continues." Analysis of the image would reveal another poem - this time from the book <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_the_Law">Liber Al Vel Legis</a>, a religious doctrine by the English occultist and magician Aleister Crowley. From there, the solvers downloaded a 130Mb file containing thousands of prime numbers. And also an MP3 file: a song called The Instar Emergence by the artist 3301, which begins with the sound of - guess what - cicadas.
Analysis of that has since lead to a Twitter account pumping out random numbers, which in turn produced a "gematria": an ancient Hebrew code table, but this time based on Anglo-Saxon runes. This pointed the solvers back into the darknet, where they found seven new physical locations, from Dallas to Moscow to Okinawa, and more clues.
But that's where, once again, the trail has gone cold. Another select group of "first solvers" have been accepted into a new "private" puzzle - this time, say reports, a kind of Myers-Briggs multiple-choice personality test.
But still, we are no closer to knowing the source, or fundamental purpose, of Cicada 3301. "That's the beauty of it though," says Eriksson. "It is impossible to know for sure until you have solved it all." That is why for him, and thousands of other hooked enthusiasts, January 4 2014 is so important: that's when the next set of riddles is due to begin again. "Maybe all will be revealed then," he grins. "But somehow, I doubt it."
