After the clarification from the governor, former Chief Minister of J&amp;K Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to express his concern on the necessity to crackdown on fake orders that are circulating in the state. “This is a very serious matter raised by the Governor. WhatsApp challenged over 'irresponsible' use after the app is used to fuel mass mob lynchings in India

New Delhi, May 9 () A bulk of the COVID-19-related fact-checks in April were related to communal rumours, most of which were false allegations against Muslims of purposefully spreading the virus, claimed a report by BOOM Live.BOOM Live, a fact-checking platform that works with social media companies like Facebook, said its study analysed 178 fact-checks on COVID-19 related to misinformation/disinformation around the pandemic from January to May this year."During April, a new trend was observed – communally charged disinformation targeting Muslims became more frequent," the report said.By the end of April, a bulk of BOOM Live's fact-checks (34 unique fact checks) were on communal rumours, it claimed.The report further noted that after several members of the Tablighi Jamaat – an Islamic missionary group – tested positive, "Islamophobic rumours around them purposefully spreading the virus became viral on the internet".Other trends also witnessed in April were: spike in fake news related to politics, more lockdown related misinformation, more misinformation around Italy and rumours related to the economy.The January-February period saw mostly rumours about China, with some false prediction theories and cures/prevention/treatments to COVID-19. March witnessed fake news on Italy and lockdowns, as well as conspiracy theories regarding the virus being a bioweapon going viral.BOOM Live said it did its first COVID-19 fact-check on January 25, while February saw major events and developments like the Delhi elections, Donald Trump's India visit and the Delhi riots."There was a drastic change of topic in March, as more COVID-19 related misinformation went viral online," it said.BOOM Live said while most of the false or misleading claims were circulated with videos (35 per cent), there was also a significant number of text messages (29.4 per cent) being shared with fake cures, treatments or quotes from celebrities, along with images (29.4 per cent) that were either misrepresented or doctored."We also noticed a small number of audio clips (2.2 per cent) going viral with false contexts. A few of our fact-checks were on news reports (4 per cent) by mainstream media organisations. WhatsApp to limit sharing of frequently forwarded messages to only one chat at a time

<ul><li><keyword id="1024053" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-regulators">Telecom regulators</keyword> on Monday rolled out a discussion paper on whether Over-the-top (OTT) services - <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">Whatsapp</keyword>, <keyword id="6377887" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="skype">Skype</keyword> and Hike – should be regulated. </li><li>The paper mainly aims at economic and security matters since such apps are sometimes ‘misused’ to spread harmful rumours. </li><li>India’s telecom companies have been demanding the OTT services to also come under regulatory framework. </li></ul>India’s telecom regulator may regulate messaging services like WhatsApp, Hike and Skype in response to security concerns and possible misuse of such apps, according to media reports. These widely used messaging services, also known as Over The Top (OTT) services are the ones accessible over the internet and rely on network operators for use. The discussion paper titled, ‘Regulatory Framework for Over The Top Communications Services’ will analyse possible regulation and its implementation, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India <a href="https://thewire.in/tech/should-whatsapp-other-over-the-top-apps-be-regulated-telecom-regulator-to-decide">reportedly</a> said. <keyword id="6356988" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai">TRAI</keyword> has invited telecom industry’s views to identify which apps should be regulated, taking into consideration the cost, benefits and security concerns. Telecom companies have been asking for OTT service providers to be brought under regulatory framework because they have been operating without the usual telecom licensing obligations. Telecom regulators have also stated that OTT services <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/trai-seeks-views-on-regulating-communication-apps-like-whatsapp-skype/66594993">lack</a> interoperability leading to dominance and accused them of abusing market power – a WhatsApp user can not connect over the call with another user on a different platform. Currently, the OTT service providers are governed by certain rules under the Information Technology Act and tax laws which are considered inadequate by the telecom industry. The paper has also sought views on if the licensing conditions should be refined and if regulation to ensure service quality should be upgraded. The algorithm can sort the social media posts and ensure that the data shared over the platforms is reliable and capable of being shared for relief operations. It is found that majority of tweets are a sympathetic content while only 2% is actually relevant. With the help of this tool, the control room team will be able to fetch live updates about the resources needed and their availability. In addition, the rescue teams can be informed via phones. Saptarshi Ghosh, who heads the tech team<a href="https://thesocialrush.com/a-new-tech-to-filter-fake-news-about-disasters-by-iit-kharagpur/"> reportedly</a> said that the algorithm, with the use of <keyword id="294572" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="machine-learning">machine learning</keyword> algorithm, can detect fake news and is able to alert the users during natural calamities. It is said to identify the rumours by mapping information sourced by the authorities, which will also help identify the users spreading misinformation. However, the algorithm is limited to identifying disaster-related fake news only. It is able to provide upto 90% accuracy distinguishing real news and misinformation, Ghosh said. If the proposal is passed, the team is expected to further collaborate with Microsoft Research and Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) to develop the system. Mumbai, Jul 12 () Designer Riddhima Kapoor Sahni has slammed rumours that her mother Neetu Kapoor and brother, actor Ranbir Kapoor, have tested positive for COVID-19 and asked people to not spread misinformation. Soon after megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan tested positive for COVID-19 and were admitted to a city hospital on Saturday, rumours started to spread that even Neetu and the "Sanju" actor are infected with the novel coronavirus. Dismissing the reports, Riddhima told , "Obviously not (true). Please stop spreading fake rumours. At least not at this time, would appreciate." Social media was abuzz with a tweet which claimed the Bachchans, who are at Nanavati Hospital, got the virus after Amitabh's grandson, Agastya Nanda, attended a birthday party hosted by Riddhima. The fashion designer also took to Instagram and called the claim baseless. "Attention seeking? Least verify/clarify! We are fit. We are good! Stop spreading rumours! #lunatics," she wrote . Amitabh and Abhishek on Saturday said that they had tested positive for COVID-19 and have been admitted to Nanavati hospital. "I have tested COVID positive. Shifted to Hospital. Hospital informing authorities, family and staff undergone tests, results awaited," Amitabh, 77, posted on Twitter. "All that have been in close proximity to me in the last 10 days are requested to please get themselves tested," he added. Abhishek, 44, said both his father and he had mild symptoms and requested everybody to be calm and not panic. Earlier today both my father and I tested positive for COVID 19. Both of us having mild symptoms have been admitted to hospital. We have informed all the required authorities and our family and staff are all being tested. I request all to stay calm and not panic. Thank you," Abhishek tweeted.
