UPI refund to digital arrest scam, here are some online scams you need to be aware of

<ul><li>A man from Pune has reportedly lost ₹2.1 crore to a <keyword id="20049228" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fake-investment-scam" source="Orion">fake investment scam</keyword>.</li><li>The victim reportedly joined an investment group after noticing an advertisement on a social media platform.</li><li>The invested amount includes a loan of ₹70 lakh and proceeds from sale of property.</li></ul> In yet another online scam, a Pune man reportedly lost a huge amount in a new <keyword id="4505806" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fake-investment" source="Orion">fake investment</keyword> scam. A 45-year-old clinical researcher has reportedly lost ₹2.1 crore over the span of a month. According to a<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/pune-researcher-loses-rs-2-1-crore-to-cyber-fraud-9090110/"> report</a> by The Indian Express, the victim fell prey to a fake <keyword id="903234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-scam" source="Orion">investment scam</keyword>, where the scammers used the name of a well-known US-based venture capital fund to deceive the victim. The platform offered online tutorials for share market investment and promised to help the victim build a good investment portfolio. When he clicked the ad, the victim was redirected to a WhatsApp group, which he joined. The admins of the group then shared online tutorials and guides for investment. The members were also encouraged to join the company’s platform for investment. The victim was then directed to download an application on their phone and then asked to make large investments on the application. Over the next few weeks, the victim reportedly transferred ₹2.15 crore to the platform to make investments. This includes money received from sale of property and loans worth ₹70 lakh taken for investments. The victim was then reportedly asked to invest an additional ₹4.33 crore in an initial public offering (IPO) of an oil company. When the victim was unable to do so, he was informed that his initial investment had been frozen. The victim then tried to call the numbers that he had communicated with on WhatsApp, but was unable to do so. Upon further investigation, he found that the platform had no connection to the venture capital fund. Upon realising this, the victim approached the police, who found the fraudsters had created fake social media profiles to scam the victim. The US federal government also took over 19 domain names like "assistmysoftware" and "helpforsoftware" that were used in the alleged scam to prevent their continued use. According to the Department of Justice's complaint, the alleged fraud involved causing pop-up messages to appear on computer screens purporting to be from Microsoft or other companies falsely claiming that the computers were infected with viruses and asking the users to call a phone number for help. When they called the number it was transferred to call centres in India from where the operators asked to access the computers and then claimed they had detected "non-existent" problems and charged them hundreds of dollars claiming falsely to fix fake issues on the computer, the complaint said. The Department said that since President Donald Trump signed the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act (EAPPA) into law in October 2017, it has participated in hundreds of enforcement actions against scams targeting seniors. MTC was initially valued at $3 (₹200) when it launched in 2017 with Lakhanpal <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/police-forces-bust-alleged-new-age-cryptocurrency-scam-in-india/">allegedly</a> promising investors a 20-fold return on their buy-in within six months according to Param Bir Singh, the police commissioner in Thane. Soon enough, he raised the value of MTC to $6,000 (₹401,472). Cumulatively, with 2,500 people in the mix, that amounts to ₹5 billion. But, there was no way for them to sell any of the cryptocurrency or even make limited withdrawals. So, basically, people made an investment but couldn’t get to their returns, or even the principal amount. In fact, the scam only caught the attention of the authorities when a businessman and his colleagues finally complained that they could no longer get a response from the company with respect to their investments. According to the police, it was easy for Lakhanpal to get away with the scheme due to the portfolio he had created for himself, including a fake degree from an international university. Apparently, he launched a magazine that highlighted ‘inspirational quotes’ and images of famous celebrities as well as a book on cryptocurrency, which added to his profile. "The GR mentions that 25 grams of sugar be added to the meals of students from Class I to V and 45 grams for students from Class VI to VIII," the letter said. "We need 25 grams of sugar per day. There are two types of sugar. One is added and the other is naturally present in food items. The students keep eating other food items throughout the day, which increases their sugar intake," Maha Paediatrics Association president Dr Ramgopal Chejara told PTI. "Adding 25 grams and 45 grams of sugar in these meals could make the children diabetic and obese. Our teams have visited schools. We have appealed to the government to stop giving such sugary food items," he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve too criticised the state government over this GR. The state government thinks the future generation is a factory to digest excess sugar, he said in a post on X. The Union government is imposing restrictions on ethanol production, while at the same time excess sugar is being given to schoolchildren, said Danve, who is Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council. "South African pacer Morne Morkel appointed as new bowling coach of team India", Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah told ANI. India and Karnataka bowler Vinay Kumar was also reported to be in contention to replace Mhambrey as team India's bowling coach. But Morkel has been appointed ahead of him. Morkel has previously worked with Gambhir during his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Lucknow Super Giants. Morkel also served as the bowling coach of India's arch-rival Pakistan. He was appointed in June 2023 and left after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in November last year. But he left six weeks before his contract was meant to expire. During his playing days, the 39-year-old was one of the tearaways in South Africa's star-studded pace bowling line-up. He made 86 Test appearances for the Proteas and claimed 309 wickets at an average of 27.7. In the ODI format, Morkel played 117 matches and scythed 188 wickets at an average of 25.3. In the shortest format of the sport, he made 44 appearances and claimed 47 scalps to his name at an average of 25.3. In India's recently conluded series against Sri Lanka, Gambhir's coaching staff included Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches. T Dilip was retained as the fielding coach from the previous regime. In Q2 2023, the share of 5G smartphones in shipments was just 49%. The average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones has decreased to $293. The shipments to online channels grew by 8% year-on-year to reach 50% in Q2 2024, up from 47% in Q2 2023. Due to severe heatwave conditions in several parts of India, offline channel shipments declined by 2% year-on-year in Q2 2024. Indian smartphone market records 7.2% growth in the first half of 2024, Vivo leads the market in Q2

The company's losses in the April-June period of 2023 were Rs 267 crore, according to an exchange filing. Revenue from operations for the quarter under review was Rs 1,644 crore against Rs 1,243 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, according to the filing. The Bengaluru-based firm said its total expenses during the first quarter grew to Rs 1,849 crore compared with Rs 1,461 crore in the June quarter of FY24. The company made its market debut earlier this month. The company in a statement said its automotive segment (E2W) posted a strong improvement in EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) margin and is close to EBITDA breakeven. The quarter witnessed the highest-ever deliveries of vehicles by the company at 1,25,198 units as against 70,575 units delivered in the same period last year, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> Mobility said. The company also said it ramped up deliveries of its mass-market scooter portfolio (S1 X portfolio) during the quarter which helped accelerate the growth, adding that the existing product portfolio also saw strong demand which continued growth momentum throughout the quarter. According to Ola, the increasing scale of operations has benefited the company in the form of lower manufacturing costs and supply chain optimization. These benefits of scale are further amplified by the company's scalable platform-based product development and manufacturing technology that results in high degrees of commonality across its products, it said. The company also announced on Wednesday the integration of its cells in its vehicles by the first quarter of next fiscal. Ola said it will launch its electric motorcycle portfolio across mass and premium segments during its annual flagship event on August 15, 2024.
