Zoom faced a lot of heat for its unresolved security concerns which used to let hackers barge into any video calls. <br /><br />Thousands of people dropped negative comments which brought the ratings down from 4.5 star to 2.0. Zoom, the <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/zoom-calls-on-weekends-are-up-almost-2000-percent/">video calling app which saw 1900% user growth in calls during quarantine</a>, has faced such a situation two months back. Zoom faced a lot of heat for its unresolved security concerns which used to let hackers barge into any video calls. <br /><br />Thousands of people dropped negative comments which brought the ratings down from 4.5 star to 2.0. TikTok’s Google Play rating improves to 1.6

<ul><li>The ‘<keyword id="9323566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="remove-china-apps">Remove China Apps</keyword>’ app was downloaded over 5 million times in the span of two weeks and had over 96,000 reviews.</li><li>The app was reportedly removed for violating Google Play Store’s “Deceptive Behaviour policy”.</li><li>On June 2, Google also removed the Mitron app due to security issues. The app was an alternative for TikTok.</li></ul>The ‘Remove China Apps’ which offered users an option to identify and remove Chinese-origin apps has been removed from the Google Play store. This comes after Google removed the Mitron app, a TikTok alternative.<br /><br />According to a report by TechCrunch, Google pulled the ‘Remove China Apps’ app from the Play store for violating the “Deceptive Behaviour policy”.<br /><br />Here’s what the policy <a href="https://play.google.com/about/privacy-security-deception/deceptive-behavior/#!?zippy_activeEl=deceptive-settings%23deceptive-settings">says</a>, “We don't allow apps that attempt to deceive users or enable dishonest behaviour including but not limited to apps which are determined to be functionally impossible.”<br /><br />A full reading of the policy doesn’t reveal any direct violation on the part of the ‘Remove China Apps’.<br /><br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="76128369" title="‘Remove China Apps’ races to 5 million downloads within two weeks as anti-China sentiment gains momentum" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br />The app reached 5 million downloads within two weeks of its launch.<br /><br /><strong>Mitron app also removed by Google<br /></strong><br />Mitron, an app that sprung up as a TikTok alternative, has also been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/mitron-tv-removed-from-google-playstore-and-its-security-has-been-questioned-by-experts/articleshow/76154629.cms">removed by Google</a> from the Play store, likely due to security concerns.<br /><br />According to reports, the Mitron app was built by using source code available on CodeCanyon for $34. ‘Remove China Apps’ pulled from Google Play store after 5 million downloads

Home-grown regional language social media platform <keyword id="3358959" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShareChat">ShareChat</keyword> on Wednesday announced that it had to let go of 101 of its employees, or about a fourth of the company's total workforce, due to the COVID-19-induced uncertainties in the advertising market.<br /><br />The Bengaluru-based company's cost-saving measures were announced in an email to employees by Ankush Sachdeva, Cofounder and CEO of the five-year-old firm which competes against the likes of Facebook and TikTok.<br /> <br /> "... today with the market uncertainties due to COVID-19, we are compelled to take a relook at our business. We have had to make a few decisions that would allow us to become leaner and position the company better for the future," Sachdeva said in the email.<br /> <br /> A ShareChat spokesperson later confirmed the decision to lay off 101 employees.<br /> <br /> "The global pandemic along with various local market uncertainties have had an impact on our business plans. This has pushed us towards certain tough decisions including a revised leaner structure while we continue to grow," the spokesperson said in a statement.<br /> <br /> "We've had to let go of 101 of our employees who've been part of our start-up journey. This was not an easy decision to make."<br /> <br /> ShareChat said it will provide a comprehensive severance package and extend assistance to the impacted associates with their outplacement support.<br /> <br /> The Twitter-backed firm started monetisation through advertisements only last year. But the COVID-19 brought uncertainties to the ad market.<br /> <br /> "We have to focus on our core product and feed recommendation driven growth levers while scaling back on the others. We need to go back to our fundamentals in terms of only picking bets that move the needle for growth," Sachdeva said.<br /> <br /> "We believe the Ad Market would remain unpredictable this year. We are streamlining our revenue teams to these new expectations yet will keep working towards building the necessary technology infrastructure," he said.<br /> <br /> In another big change, which is in line with Twitter's decision to allow some employees to work from home forever, ShareChat said that it would be partially remote at all times in the future.<br /> <br /> "We have adapted well to the remote working environment. Hence, we have relooked at the requirement of physical office spaces. ShareChat sacks 101 employees due to  'market uncertainties' amid COVID-19

<ul><li>SMising is becoming more prevalent, as highlighted by the coronavirus lockdown, which means one-time-passwords may not be enough to keep hackers at bay. </li><li>Guru Bhat, the General Manager at <keyword id="284992" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayPal-India">PayPal India</keyword> and the company’s chief technology officer Sri Shivananda explain how ‘kinetics’ is the next threshold for payment companies to keep fraudulent transactions at bay.</li><li>The problems with using OTPs extend beyond the <keyword id="6361948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity">cybersecurity</keyword> landscape, with a higher chance of transactions getting abandoned midway, creating a demand for seamless <keyword id="6659127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Multi-factor-authentication">multi-factor authentication</keyword>.</li></ul>Users in India believe that their online transactions are largely safe because we have a strong system of <keyword id="1592017" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Two-factor-authentication">two-factor authentication</keyword> in place. However, with phishing — especially SMishing — on the rise, this may no longer be the case. Hackers can gain access to your phone, and, in turn, all your messages, including incoming one-time-passwords (OTPs).<br /><br />So, what do you do when the one sure-shot method of protecting your <keyword id="694150" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-payments">online payments</keyword> might get compromised? ”The way you hold your phone, the pressure that you exert when you’re typing on the keyboard and other things — these are multiple hidden factors that will give you the same result as an OTP,” said Guru Bhat, vice-president of the Customer Success Platform and general manager at <keyword id="6357940" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paypal">PayPal</keyword> India.<br /><br />Most smartphones today come equipped with a host of sensors. The screen Gyroscopes can measure the orientation of your phone. Accelerometers can determine how hard you’re hitting your keyboard. And, advanced haptics can even determine how hard you’re holding your phone. <br /><br />These factors come together to determine a person’s digital signature through what is called ‘kinetics’. “You take the fact that an individual is associated with a device and the individuals’ use of a device itself has a signature. And, you use that signature as a part of the claim that the individual is who they claim to be,” explained Bhat.<br /><br /><strong>Where do you draw the line?<br /></strong>While multi-factor authentication could facilitate seamless transitions, companies will also have to determine where to draw the line since microphones and facial recognition are also factors than need to be taken into account. While they may be more efficient than other methods to authenticate a person’s identity, they end up falling on the other end of the privacy spectrum. “It’s going be a mix of human intelligence and machine intelligence, where the magic actually lies,” said Bhat.<br /><br />It’s not something that is used by payments platforms just yet, but it’s definitely something that’s on the horizon. “Soon enough, we’ll get to a place where seamless transactions and convenience will all be based on implicit multi-factors, from various different things,” said Sri Shivananda, senior vice president and chief technology officer at PayPal.<br /><br /><strong>The obstacles with OTPs go beyond security<br /></strong>Until multi-factor authentication comes in, OTPs are still the best option that users have at their disposal. “There are other methods of secure communication that can happen. But, during the bridge, this is the best course that companies are able to take,” Shivananda explained.<br /><br />However, OTPs are not only a worry with respect to security as the hackers get cleverer but also with respect to transaction drop rate. “Does two-factor authentication improve the security and safety of a transaction — absolutely, yes. And, at the same time, does it add friction to it and does the conversion rate for a merchant actually drop — absolutely, yes,” he added.<br /><br />From the time that you initiate a transaction to when you complete it using an OTP there are many things that can go wrong.
