<ul><li><keyword id="6354576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook" source="Orion">Facebook</keyword>’s Project Aria AR glasses look like normal glasses but have a lot going on under the hood.</li><li>It is powered by a Qualcomm chip and uses the same camera sensors as the Oculus Quest 2.</li><li>Project Aria is not a commercial product and it is used to help develop future AR devices.</li></ul>Facebook announced Project Aria, its experimental AR glasses back in September 2020. It has since provided very few details about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/facebook-employees-with-video-camera-glasses-are-prowling-the-streets-to-do-research-on-privacy/articleshow/78178521.cms">Project Aria</a> other than saying that it’s not a commercial product and that it will actually help Facebook in building future AR devices. That’s not to say we aren’t interested in what those smart glasses can do. A manual uploaded on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website has detailed what the Project Aria smart glasses look like and how it works. <br /><br />This FCC manual <a href="https://www.protocol.com/project-aria-gemini-ar-glasses">spotted</a> by Protocol is actually dated August 28, 2020 so the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/facebook-might-put-facial-recognition-tech-in-its-smart-glasses-due-to-launch-this-year-but-only-if-it-can-ensure-authority-structures-cant-abuse-user-privacy/articleshow/81228574.cms">AR glasses</a> could have gone through some changes. But it still gives an overview of how it works and what it features. Project Aria is codenamed Gemini according to the document. The AR glasses look quite like any other pair of normal glasses but it comes with a host of features that obviously make it different. <br /><br />Firstly, you can’t clasp the arms of the AR glasses together but there are quite a few important buttons on them. On the right side the status LED indicator, proximity sensor and power button are placed together. At the bottom of the right arm is the mute switch that is used to record and mute. On the left arm of the AR glasses there is the capture button which is for the built-in camera sensors. Project Aria uses the same camera sensors as the Oculus Quest 2, according to Protocol. The AR glasses are also powered by a Qualcomm chip.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is Project Aria used for?" comment="subhead" text="What is Project Aria used for?"><span data-til="noop">What is Project Aria used for?</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />For charging and transferring data, the AR glasses use a magnetic connector. There’s also a companion app for the glasses that displays battery status, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and also the data collected. As Facebook already explained, the AR glasses will be used to capture video and audio along with the wearer’s eye tracking and location information. New document reveals how Facebook’s Project Aria AR glasses work and look like

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> is working on <keyword id="1131252" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="smartglasses">smartglasses</keyword> that CEO <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="mark-zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> says will launch in 2021.</strong></li><li><strong>In the meantime, the social media giant is deploying employees and contractors into public spaces equipped with smartglasses that map the world by capturing photos.</strong></li><li><strong>The initiative is known as "<keyword id="9954967" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="project-aria">Project Aria</keyword>."</strong></li><li><strong>The research is intended to inform best practices for the future, including getting ahead of potential privacy concerns, Facebook said. In practice, the project will capture a lot of photos of public spaces.</strong></li></ul><p>Facebook is years deep into a project that aims to replace smartphones with <keyword id="6369782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="augmented-reality">augmented reality</keyword> glasses.</p><p>Its first step toward that goal, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a broadcast on Wednesday, is creating a set of smartglasses — standard eyeglasses, but with "smart" functionality like cameras and wireless internet connectivity.</p><p>Those glasses are expected next year as part of a partnership with Luxottica Group, the parent company of several major glasses brands, like Ray-Ban, Oakley, Sunglass Hut, and LensCrafters. </p><p>But before these smartglasses launch, Facebook is sending employees into the wild with their own sets of research glasses equipped with an array of cameras — similar to the mapping car Google might use for Google Street View, but with human beings. Participants in the initiative, known as "Project Aria," will be deployed on Facebook campuses and into public spaces where their glasses will capture the world around them.</p><p>"Like a mapping car, all participants will be easily identifiable by their clothing," <keyword id="8138537" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook-Reality-Labs">Facebook Reality Labs</keyword> head <keyword id="1761043" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Andrew-Bosworth">Andrew Bosworth</keyword> said on Wednesday.</p><p>One example participant, seen above, has Facebook Reality Labs Research written on his shirt, and his camera-enabled glasses say "Research" in large white letters.</p><p>Here's a closer look at the glasses themselves:</p><div type="image" title="Facebook Project Aria smartglasses" height="798" width="1596" msid="78178515" hostid="261"></div><p>Participants are said to receive training ahead of deployment, and are advised against entering public bathrooms or prayer spaces while wearing the glasses. </p><p>They goal is to map the environment "in real-world conditions, indoors and outdoors" as a means of determining best practices for a potential future where smartglasses and, eventually, augmented reality glasses are common. </p><p>Critically, Bosworth said that all data collected by Project Aria participants will be "quarantined" before it's used for research by Facebook. For its election commission, Facebook has approached academics and policy experts, the report added. <br /><br />This election body would be tasked with handling issues related to elections. These include political ads and election-related misinformation. The report added that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t want to be seen as the “sole decision maker on political content”. The said commission is expected to be formed soon and Facebook could make the announcement this fall ahead of the 2022 US midterm elections. The Oversight Board did stay the decision but frowned on the indefinite ban. Facebook later decided to keep the ban for two years. <br /><br />According to the report, the election commission would offer advice on situations where Facebook hasn’t taken a decision yet. But it isn’t confirmed if the election commission will have the final say on decisions taken by Facebook.<br /><br />Facebook’s plan of forming a body of experts for advice on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-election-misinformation-voting-labels-demoting-presidential-election-2020-11">election-related issues </a>could help the social media giant from criticism it receives by political parties on biased decisions. Facebook is reportedly planning to form a commission for advice on election-related issues

<ul><li><keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> plans to launch its first <keyword id="1531472" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-glasses">smart glasses</keyword> in partnership with Ray-Ban.</li><li>The smart glasses will keep the iconic look, and it will be able to do some “pretty neat things”.</li><li>This isn’t to be mistaken with AR glasses as it won’t actually let you project digital objects onto the real world.</li></ul>Facebook last year announced that it is partnering with Ray-Ban to launch its first pair of smart glasses. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed at the company’s Q2 earnings call that its next product launch will be the smart glasses. There is no official launch date yet but we’re expecting to see the <keyword id="8117264" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook-smart-glasses">Facebook smart glasses</keyword> this year. <br /><br />The first time we heard about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/facebook-might-put-facial-recognition-tech-in-its-smart-glasses-due-to-launch-this-year-but-only-if-it-can-ensure-authority-structures-cant-abuse-user-privacy/articleshow/81228574.cms">Facebook’s AR glasses</a> was back in 2017. This will be the first product release from the social media giant’s work in the futuristic glasses department. But it won’t actually be AR glasses as it won’t let users overlay digital objects onto the real environment, Bloomberg had <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-06/facebook-smart-glasses-coming-sooner-than-later-without-ar">reported</a> earlier this year. Facebook is also not calling it AR glasses and instead sticking to smart glasses. Zuckerberg did not reveal any details about the smart glasses other than saying that it will “let you do some pretty neat things”. According to a CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/17/facebook-enlists-ray-ban-maker-luxottica-to-make-orion-ar-glasses.html">report</a>, Facebook’s smart glasses would let users take calls, display information and also live-stream their vantage point. The glasses are also designed to replace smartphones, the report added.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Classic smart glasses" comment="subhead" text="Classic smart glasses"><span data-til="noop">Classic smart glasses</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />Zuckerberg also said that the smart glasses will have their iconic form factor so we’re looking at a classic Ray-Ban design. This is also expected to help with the company’s development of true AR glasses in the future. Facebook is currently working on Project Aria, its research project for futuristic AR glasses. This is where we expect to see Facebook’s true AR glasses but the development could take years.<br /><br />The smart glasses are still a project under Facebook Reality Labs like Project Aria. We can possibly expect the Facebook smart glasses to offer a similar experience to the Snap Spectacles and the Amazon Echo Frames. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/i-brought-snapchats-new-380-smart-glasses-on-a-trip-to-london-and-their-biggest-selling-point-was-a-major-letdown/articleshow/72172625.cms">Snap Spectacles</a> are basically camera glasses that let you capture photos and videos but you still need a smartphone to use Snap’s AR effects. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-echo-frames-review?IR=T">Amazon Echo Frames</a> have Alexa built-in so you can let it carry out different skills and tasks. Snapchat actually launched its first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/snap-just-unveiled-new-ar-spectacles-glasses-with-built-in-screens/articleshow/82814914.cms">Spectacles AR glasses</a> this year that lets creators project their work onto the world around them. This is however limited to creators, and not available for commercial use. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Eric Yu was a software engineer at Meta and experienced panic attacks due to work pressure.</li><li>He brainstormed new ways to generate income because he wanted to quit his tech job.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Eric Yu, a 28-year-old former software engineer at Meta. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>In 2016, after a series of back-to-back interviews with Google, Meta, and Palantir, I was on a flight back home when I received my software-engineer offer letter from Facebook. At that very moment, I felt like I had reached the top of a mountain. A few days later, I also received an offer from Google.</p><p>Landing job offers like these had been a huge goal of mine. I worked hard during school, and it seemed like I finally had my life figured out. But I was pretty torn between Facebook and Google. At the time, Facebook seemed more like a startup and less "corporate" than Google. I also preferred its campus more, so I chose Facebook. </p><p>The first year and a half at Facebook were pretty great. I was a new college grad who was starry-eyed and excited about my work. But about two and a half years in, I started experiencing anxiety.</p><div type="image" title="A woman being picked up by a man in front of a beach." height="826" width="1101" msid="104282309" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>I had my first panic attack during work hours</strong></h2><p>My typical day started at 7 a.m. I worked until noon, had lunch and a couple of meetings, and then dove back into intense coding blocks from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.</p><p>Even after work hours, I couldn't turn work off — I kept thinking about the problems at work and what I needed to do. I think the pressure and the environment of working in tech made it incredibly hard for me to disconnect after work. </p><p>In November 2019, I experienced my first panic attack while I was working from home. It was around 4 p.m., and my left pinky went completely numb. At first, I ignored it, but it got worse: An hour in, my ears were ringing, and my heart was beating really fast.</p><p>I was zoning out and felt intense thoughts. It felt like a water dam — like if too much water pushed against it, it might break, and all the water would pour out. The more I tried to block my feelings away, the more it felt like bursting out all at once. Fortunately, my girlfriend Wanda (now my fiancée) was there and recognized it as a panic attack.</p><p>I didn't know what a panic attack was at the time, and I thought it was a one-off thing. But in the following months, it kept happening and got progressively worse. For six months, from March to September 2020, I was at the lowest point in my life. Every day felt like a grind: I didn't know what I was doing or why I was still working. My performance started dropping — I couldn't focus on my code or keep up with the deadlines.</p><h2><strong>I received tough comments from engineers</strong></h2><p>Meta has a pretty high bar when it comes to code quality, and the code reviews were tough. At other companies I've interned at, the code reviews were very lenient — someone quickly looked at my work and approved it. But at Meta, there's a strong emphasis on writing code the right way, and you have to follow specific design patterns and architecture styles. </p><p>In these reviews, I collaborated with different teams to identify the best way to write the code. There was some tension at times, and I received tough feedback on how to fix the code after numerous reviews. It sometimes left me feeling bad.</p><div type="image" title="Eric Yu in a suit against a yellow background." height="1000" width="1006" msid="104282311" hostid="261"></div><p>In my opinion, there's a constructive way to give feedback: <em>"Hey, I like the attempt you made here, and there might be opportunities to improve in this way."</em> But some engineers at Meta lacked tact and nuance: <em>"This is really bad. You shouldn't have written it like this."</em> This kind of feedback makes it sound like this is a black-and-white issue, and it often overlooks the emotional aspect of communication.</p><h2><strong>I worked later than most of my team and even worked on weekends</strong></h2><p>Every time our team built a feature, we tested it out. Then, if the feature worked well, we rolled it out to the entire world. If it didn't, we used those learnings to figure out what we'd want to build next.</p><p>I remember one month, I was the only engineer on the Android team because people were either on vacation or taking mental-health leave. I didn't want my team to be held back because of me, so I felt pressured to perform. If I didn't stay up to speed and get those learnings quickly, then I'd be delaying future work streams, which would impact the whole team's progress.</p><p>So I went the extra mile to get things done: I worked until 8 p.m. (much later than most employees), and I also spent about four hours a day on the weekends just to make sure I was keeping up with the pace.</p><p>Looking back, my workload at that time was potentially unhealthy. I should have just told my manager that I couldn't handle it and that I needed more people to help me out. </p><h2><strong>The last straw was when my manager questioned my 'commit count'</strong></h2><p>The process in which engineers write and add their code to the codebase is called "commits." There was an internal dashboard where employees could see how much code each teammate had done over time.</p><p>I don't think it was the healthiest thing to make it so public, and it was definitely stressful. I checked the dashboard every few weeks to see where I was relative to the team, to the broader organization, and at the company.</p><p>I remember when I had just switched over to a new team, my manager pulled me into a conversation and told me he was upset about my commit count — I was slightly below the average of most of my team.</p><p>But during my onboarding, the road map and vision of what this new team wanted to build weren't super obvious, so there weren't a lot of clear projects that were being delegated to me. It was a big reason my code count was a bit low.</p><p>It was frustrating that leadership was looking so closely at commit counts to gauge employee success. I believed that code quantity alone didn't prove anything — skills like mentorship, project management, and navigating interpersonal dependencies should also be valued. But my manager held a different perspective, and that conversation was one of the last straws that convinced me to leave Meta.</p><h2><strong>I set a personal goal to finally leave Meta</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A large piece of paper with plans written in pen." height="2268" width="3023" msid="104282314" hostid="261"></div>By the end of 2020, Wanda and I thought about what our lives would look like in the next 10 years. We decided we needed exit plans because neither of us wanted to work in tech for that much longer.<p>One night, we brainstormed every possible way to generate income on a whiteboard — drop shipping, brand affiliate marketing, and real estate. After evaluating risks and returns, we narrowed it down to real estate and Airbnb. But this was during the Covid-19 pandemic, and we were unsure if we wanted to fully get into it.</p><div type="image" title="A hand-drawn graph with sticky notes ascending it." height="2274" width="3024" msid="104282318" hostid="261"></div><p>So we started with house hacking, a lower-cost way of getting into real estate. We planned to buy a house, live in a part of it, and rent out the rest of the home to someone else. Our thought process was simple: We wanted to buy a property with a low down payment of 5% and have the mortgage payment be less than what we were paying in rent in San Francisco.</p><p>We bought a five-bedroom home in Redding, California, four hours north of San Francisco. While we lived in a 252-square-foot detached guest house in the backyard, our main house was bringing in about $8,000 a month in revenue on Airbnb.</p><div type="image" title="Eric Yu detached home" height="995" width="1326" msid="104282322" hostid="261"></div><p>We were basically living for free and getting paid money every month. We grew confident in real estate and saw its potential. I even set a personal goal to quit Meta once I was making $10,000 a month from real estate.</p><p>We doubled down and bought two more properties in 2021, and by the end of that year, I reached that $10,000-a-month milestone. I then bought two more homes in 2022 and one more in 2023.</p><h2>I quit when everyone was still working from home because of the pandemic</h2><p>The experience was underwhelming. I was at home and didn't see my coworkers in person; there was no farewell party or formal goodbye. After my last meeting, I closed my laptop and felt relieved: "Wow, I'm done."</p><p>I know it sounds crazy to leave a $370,000 job, and staying at Meta for the rest of my life would have ensured financial security, but I knew it wasn't right for me.</p><p>But earning passive income from real estate isn't the endgame for me, either. It just provides me the time and space to explore what I actually want to do in life once I have my finances in order. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I've spent about six years working in the tech industry at companies such as LinkedIn, Meta, and Google.</p><p>In college, I studied sociology and media studies. I had no prior exposure to the tech industry or even the corporate world, and I didn't know what I wanted to do after college.</p><p>I found it really hard to convince companies to take a chance on me with my sociology degree, especially for roles that I was looking for within tech. They typically look for students majoring in business or computer science.</p><p>Finally, I decided to start a club in college called Diversatech, a tech-consulting club that would bring students of all majors to gain experience with companies like Google, LinkedIn, and Figma.</p><p>In the club, the side project I worked on helped me stand out. It showed that I could build something from zero to one, and it ultimately helped me land a role at LinkedIn after college.</p><p>LinkedIn wasn't the highest-paying new college-graduate offer I received. I took the pay cut with the hope that having LinkedIn on my résumé would open more doors further down the line. I think the bet paid off because it was much easier to get past résumé screens and interview rounds. It likely played a role for me in securing an offer from Google within a year.</p><h2><strong>How much money I made working in tech</strong></h2><p><strong>LinkedIn: Business-leadership program, sales associate</strong><strong><br /></strong><strong>$50,981 base salary + $17K annual target bonus</strong></p><p>After I graduated in 2017, I joined LinkedIn's business-leadership program, which is a rotational program. First, you worked in customer operations and then spent a couple of months in recruiting. This person will ultimately become a sales development representative.</p><p>I was super passionate about the company and its mission, but I wasn't passionate about sales — I wanted to try something more strategic like product marketing. So I started looking elsewhere.</p><p><strong>Google: Associate product-marketing manager</strong><strong><br /></strong><strong>$91,000 base salary + 15% annual bonus target + $64K stock package vested over four years</strong></p><p>I joined the associate product-marketing program at Google, where I fell in love with product marketing. When I was there, it was a 2 ½-year program — the first rotation was 18 months, and the second rotation was 12 months.</p><p>My first rotation was in global programs and events for Google Cloud. I got to travel to 10 countries a year, including Japan, Austria, Australia, Italy, and Spain. It gave me a lot of exposure to running a business within each geographic area and taking into account cultures and norms.</p><p>During the second rotation, I joined the privacy team as an associate product-marketing manager — I love this role because I got to tap into my background in sociology and media studies to understand how we could build more responsible technology products that respected people's privacy, which was becoming increasingly important at the time.</p><p><strong>Meta: Product-marketing manager</strong><strong><br /></strong><strong>$150,000 base salary + $15K target bonus + $80K over 4 years stock package + $20K sign-on bonus</strong></p><p>In 2020, Meta contacted me about joining their privacy product-marketing team for their new augmented-reality and virtual-reality products. I applied and successfully got the role, which provided me with exposure to early product development. I aggressively negotiated the salary and also secured a promotion.</p><p>Shortly after joining Meta, I was surprised to receive another promotion.</p><p>I took on various roles during my time there, starting with building the privacy product-marketing team for augmented-reality and virtual-reality products. That was an exciting time as VR was gaining popularity because of the pandemic and people staying home.</p><p>I had the opportunity to be at the forefront of emerging technology and work on some really cool early product development.</p><p>Then, I decided to follow a respected manager and underwent an internal transfer to a new team. This role became my personal "mini MBA" as I gained extensive knowledge in aspects of the business, including long-term product roadmap, sales, and category management.</p><p>I joined Facebook with a $150,000 base salary in November 2020. By the time I left in June 2023, my base salary was $196,000.</p><h2><strong>I care more about the breadth of experience instead of just salary bumps</strong></h2><p>Many people talk about salary bumps as a benefit of job-hopping. However, the No. 1 reason and motivation has always been to gain a breadth of experience.</p><p>When you're starting out in your career, it's important to explore roles and build a network in new companies. Through all these jobs, I gained confidence and skills from sales to product marketing. That's why I quit my job at Meta to start my own startup in the creator economy.</p><p>Some may think leaving during an economic downturn is crazy, but I wanted to use my knowledge to try something on my own.</p><p>I can always return to the tech industry if my startup doesn't work. Through job-hopping, investing, side hustles, and a little luck — I'm in no rush to return to a corporate job, so I have no hard timeline just yet.</p><p>Worse comes to worst, I'll eventually find another job at another tech company, but if the stars align, this won't happen soon.</p><h2><strong>It's OK not to love your first few jobs — I didn't</strong></h2><p>You don't need to get it right on the first try. Job-hopping helped me realize what I did and didn't like, and I made career moves accordingly.</p><p>I realized my 20s was my time to explore roles and industries. Our careers span upwards of 40 years, so I wanted to take full advantage of exploring — I feel the later you get in your career, the harder it is to drop off and do something else.</p><p>When you become more senior, the company values more depth and progression. Government security forces killed 42 suspected drug cartel henchmen and suffered one fatality in a firefight.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, one of the world's most wanted men and the boss of the vaunted Sinaloa cartel, broke out of a Mexican prison <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/video-of-el-chapos-escape-2015-9" target="_blank">in bold fashion</a> in July.</p><p>Guzmán's latest jailbreak follows a 2001 escape that reportedly saw him wheeled out of prison <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-2-prisons-mexican-drug-kingpin-el-chapo-escaped-from-were-nearly-identical-2015-7" target="_blank">in a laundry cart</a>.</p><p>To some observers, the reason why the Mexican government can't hang on to Guzmán is simple: <strong>It doesn't want to.</strong></p><h2>A 'mitigating force'</h2><p>Permitting the release of Guzmán, who has been described as a "<a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/07/chapo-mexico-drug-war/398927/" target="_blank">mitigating force</a>" in the Mexican drug trade, could allow the Sinaloa boss to bring some stability back to the country's narco scene.</p><p>"When I first heard the news, I thought this is either a good thing or a bad thing," a Mexican cartel operative <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/07/chapo-mexico-drug-war/398927/" target="_blank">told</a> Ginger Thompson in the days after Guzmán's escape.</p><p>"Either this is a sign of how far things in Mexico are out of control. Or this shows that the government is willing to risk a certain amount of <keyword id="6356001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> embarrassment in order to restore peace for Mexican people." </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Henry Romero</span></p><p class="caption">Federal police hand out flyers to driver with photos of drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman offering a reward of 60 million Mexican pesos for information near the Marquesa toll booth outside Mexico City, July 16, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In this account, putting up with the "embarrassment" of officials who seemingly ignored the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hammering-audio-in-el-chapo-prison-cell" target="_blank">sounds of construction work</a> coming from Guzmán's cell and who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-mexican-guards-took-18-minutes-to-reach-drug-lords-prison-cell-2015-7" target="_blank">took 18 minutes to investigate</a> his disappearance from prison cameras allowed the Mexican government to have a major cartel figure back in operation - hopefully to stem a growing problem.</p><p>According to the experts Thompson spoke with - a senior Mexican intelligence official, an experienced American counternarcotics agent, and the cartel operative - Guzmán's absence had allowed new actors to bring rising levels of violence to Mexico.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Screen grab</span></p><p class="caption">Screen grab from a CJNG video.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>They referenced the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rising-mexican-cartel-jalisco-new-generation-2015-4" target="_blank">Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion</a>. In the months leading up Guzmán's escape, CJNG had conducted <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-briefs/challenging-state-a-poor-strategy-for-mexico-jalisco-cartel" target="_blank">violent attacks</a> against the government.</p><p>In April, a CJNG ambush <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-analysis/bloody-attack-police-mexico-raises-jalisco-cartel-profile" target="_blank">killed 15 police</a> in Jalisco state; in May, the cartel staged 39 roadblocks throughout Jalisco state downed a police helicopter, <a href="http://www.efe.com/efe/english/portada/cartel-infiltrated-police-force-in-western-mexico-officers-say/50000260-2603442" target="_blank">killing six soldiers</a>. The cartel was also believed to have <a href="http://www.efe.com/efe/english/portada/cartel-infiltrated-police-force-in-western-mexico-officers-say/50000260-2603442" target="_blank">infiltrated police forces</a> in Jalisco.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Alejandro Acosta</span></p><p class="caption">Men stand next to the wreckage of a tractor-trailer set ablaze by members of a drug cartel in Guadalajara, in Mexico's Jalisco state, May 1, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>CJNG and Sinaloa's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzman-sinaloa-jalisco-cartel" target="_blank">suspected cooperation</a> on some matters (including on some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzman-sinaloa-jalisco-cartel" target="_blank">aspects</a> of Guzmán's jailbreak) suggest that there could be some truth to the belief Guzmán can act as a moderating force, even if there are signs that the cartels - or <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-analysis/mexico-sinaloa-jalisco-cartel-competing-or-collaborating" target="_blank">elements within them</a> - are clashing, with Sinaloa's turf in Tijuana as a potential <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-analysis/mexico-sinaloa-jalisco-cartel-competing-or-collaborating" target="_blank">battleground</a>.</p><p>But even if all that was needed is to bring some wayward factions within the cartels to heel, that's likely still a task beyond the capabilities of Mexican forces.</p><p>"Mexico's security apparatus is simply not ready to combat organized crime," the Mexican intelligence officer <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/07/chapo-mexico-drug-war/398927/" target="_blank">told</a> Thompson.</p><h2>'This is all some kind of ruse'</h2><p>Suggestions that the government has cooperated with Guzmán to ease drug-war violence are based on more than just CJNG attacks in early 2015.</p><p>A hallmark of the war on cartels in Mexico was the kingpin strategy, which became closely associated with former Mexican President Felipe Calderon (2006-2012), and earned him criticism, as taking down cartel leadership appeared to stoke more violence.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Guillermo Arias</span></p><p class="caption">Mexican President Felipe Calderon (c) walks military officials to meet with federal forces involved in ongoing anti-crime operations in Apatzingan, Michoacan, Mexico, January 03, 2007.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Whenever Calderon would take out a top guy, in the aftermath … what we would always see is some kind of internal struggle or some kind of new violence coming from other organizations trying to take advantage of the weakness of the cartel that got hit," <a href="http://www.sandiego.edu/cas/about_the_college/faculty/biography.php?ID=239" target="_blank">David Shirk</a>, a professor at the University of San Diego, told Business Insider during a conversation about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">Mexico's militarized response to crime</a>.</p><p>Though current Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has continued this approach, he "has been able to stave off kind of the worst aspects of the kingpin strategy, and its not exactly clear to anyone how or why that has been the case," said Shirk, who heads USD's <a href="https://justiceinmexico.org/" target="_blank">Justice in Mexico</a> project.</p><p>"People think that somehow there's been a pact or a negotiation between the Peña Nieto administration and certain cartel organizations," Shirk added, noting that there were the same suspicions about Calderon.</p><p>That Guzmán, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexicos-president-finished-dominoes-after-el-chapo-escaped-2015-9" target="_blank">a marquee capture</a> for the Peña Nieto administration, was able to escape just 17 months after his arrest "fuels further speculation that this is all some kind of ruse," Shirk said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Eduardo Verdugo</span></p><p class="caption">Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman sits inside a federal police helicopter at a navy hanger in Mexico City, Saturday, February 22, 2014. The world's most-wanted drug lord, Guzman, arrived at the Mexico City airport after his arrest early Saturday and was being taken directly to prison, said Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Mexico's PRI and the narco underworld</h2><p>The history of Peña Nieto's political party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), may also lead some to suspect that security policy isn't the government's only concern.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto looks on during Flag Day celebrations at Campo Marte in Mexico City February 24, 2013.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Peña Nieto took office in December 2012 as the first president from the PRI in 12 years.</p><p>His PRI predecessors ran Mexico as a de facto one-party state for most of the 20th century.</p><p>In that position, rather than working to eliminate the industry, the PRI permitted some elements of the drug trade to operate.</p><p>In the late 1940s, amid growing US pressure to fight drug trafficking, "it quickly became apparent … that PRI honchos … had no intention of striving to eliminate the drug business … [instead] establishing something of a public-private partnership" with cartels, as Carmen Boullosa and Mike Wallace report in their 2015 book, "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/A-Narco-History-Carmen-Boullosa/dp/1939293790" target="_blank">A Narco History</a>."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">A soldier guards marijuana that is being incinerated in Tijuana, Mexico.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The government's periodic crackdowns, Boullosa and Wallace explain, helped centralize the drug trade in the hands of the most organized groups, among them the Sinaloa federation that Guzmán would come to lead in the 1990s.</p><p>And details that emerged shortly after Peña Nieto was elected president in July 2012 gave Mexicans a reason to believe his party still had active links to the narco underworld.</p><p>In August 2012, police in Spain assisted by the FBI <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2012/08/10/spanish_police_say_they_foiled_cartel_expansion/?page=1" target="_blank">apprehended</a> four suspected Sinaloa cartel members, led by Jesús Gutiérrez Guzmán, 'El Chapo' Guzmán's cousin, and among them was Rafael Humberto Celaya Valenzuela.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/rafaelhumberto.celayavalenzuela">Rafael Celaya Valenzuela/Facebook</a></span></p><p class="caption">A photo with Enrique Peña Nieto that appeared on Rafael Celaya Valenzuela's Facebook page, showing him with the then presidential candidate in Mexico City.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Celaya Valenzuela <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/04-09-2012/356069" target="_blank">attempted to run</a> as a PRI candidate for federal deputy in Sonora state in those same 2012 elections, a candidacy that the party <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2012/08/10/spanish_police_say_they_foiled_cartel_expansion/?page=1" target="_blank">tried to block</a> and ended with Celaya Valenzuela <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/04-09-2012/356069" target="_blank">badly defeated</a>.</p><p>After his arrest, photos that Celaya Valenzuela had <a href="http://internacional.elpais.com/internacional/2012/08/10/mexico/1344635764_243312.html" target="_blank">posted on Facebook</a> that showed him with Peña Nieto were made public.</p><p>Celaya is also reportedly the nephew of Victor Hugo Celaya, an influential PRI figure in Sonora state and <a href="http://aristeguinoticias.com/1412/mexico/nuevo-funcionario-de-sagarpa-es-tio-de-presunto-operador-de-el-chapo/" target="_blank">was appointed</a> as general coordinator for the secretariat of agriculture shortly after Peña Nieto took office in December 2012.</p><p>The PRI <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2012/08/10/spanish_police_say_they_foiled_cartel_expansion/?page=1">insisted</a> that there was no connection between Celaya Valenzuela and the president, and that the photo was a standard part of the campaign.</p><p>Celaya Valenzuela isn't the only connection between the PRI and the Sinaloa cartel. Guzmán's 2001 jailbreak was assisted by Dámaso López Nuñez, aka "<a href="http://elpais.com/elpais/2015/02/03/inenglish/1422978480_495472.html" target="_blank">El Licenciado</a>," a <a href="http://elclarinete.com.mx/el-chapo-y-el-pri-un-pacto-de-impunidad/" target="_blank">subdirector</a> for security at Puente Grande.</p><p>López Nuñez, the son of Dámaso López García, a <a href="http://elclarinete.com.mx/el-chapo-y-el-pri-un-pacto-de-impunidad/" target="_blank">member</a> of the PRI in Sinaloa state, also <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-briefs/former-govt-official-now-top-sinaloa-cartel-operative" target="_blank">worked for the government</a> in Sinaloa before joining the cartel, and is now reportedly a <a href="http://elpais.com/elpais/2015/02/03/inenglish/1422978480_495472.html" target="_blank">high-level leader</a> for the Sinaloa cartel who was rumored to be Guzmán's successor after his arrest in February 2014.</p><p>López Nuñez is also suspected of stealing the blueprints of Puente Grande, which helped Guzmán break out of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-2-prisons-mexican-drug-kingpin-el-chapo-escaped-from-were-nearly-identical-2015-7" target="_blank">nearly identical</a> Altiplano prison earlier this year.</p><p>The misdeeds of López Nuñez and Celaya Valenzuela don't prove that PRI national-level leadership is in league with Mexican organized crime, but they do indicate that the boundary between Mexico's political class and the country's criminal underworld is easily crossed.</p><h2>'A perverse game of interests'</h2><p>"Agents I talked to tell me that Sinaloa has people in every branch of the government," said David Epstein, whose <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/devils-deals-and-the-dea" target="_blank">recent article for ProPublica</a> details efforts to bring down the Arellano Félix Organization in what is now the Sinaloa cartel's stomping ground in northwest Mexico.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Henry Romero</span></p><p class="caption">Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto during a ceremony to sign into <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> a new-anti corruption legislation, at the National Palace in Mexico City, May 4, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"The people I spoke with who work in that world, both who were in the cartel as well as the agents in law enforcement, suggested … there has never been a single cartel as powerful in Mexico as Sinaloa is right now," Epstein told Business Insider.</p><p>As Epstein's <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/devils-deals-and-the-dea" target="_blank">story</a> describes, the Sinaloa cartel rose to prominence in part because of US and Mexican efforts to bring down the Arellano Félix Organization, an effort Guzmán and his associates assisted.</p><p>If, as Epstein <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/devils-deals-and-the-dea" target="_blank">details</a> and as officials <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/07/chapo-mexico-drug-war/398927/" target="_blank">told</a> Thompson, fighting the drug war requires shifting alliances between governments and whichever bad guy might be most helpful at that point in time, then the purported collaboration between the Mexican government and Guzmán may just be the latest partnership - one driven by political imperative rather than by a moral consideration.</p><p>"There's no real fight against drugs," the Mexican intelligence official, who claimed to have recently overseen negotiations with Guzmán's son, Alfredo, <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/07/chapo-mexico-drug-war/398927/" target="_blank">told</a> Thompson.
