The move by the Kerala government was implement even ahead of UK which reportedly is is planning to revise their primary curriculum by including this topic. Earlier in 2022, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the technology arm of Kerala General <keyword id="19921999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="education-department" source="keywords">Education Department</keyword>, had imparted Fake News prevention and awareness creation training for 19.72 lakh students of Grades 5 to 10, as part of the Digital Media Literacy programme. It was the first time in India that such a massive training was given to 9.48 Lakh Upper Primary students and 10.24 High school students with the help of 5920 trainers. The 2.5 hours of training which was titled 'Satyameve Jayathe' focused on four sections which included the 'Use of the Internet in day-to-day life', 'Social Media requires us', 'Rights and Wrongs in Social Media' and how to prevent the spread of fake news. The false information shared through digital media, the negative impact it creates on society and the verification of the authenticity of information were made part of the training through various 'Case Studies'. The training also focused on areas such as understanding the influence of digital media in information transactions, creating an urge towards knowing non-factual interference in digital media and how to react to them constructively, acquiring technical knowledge in understanding the truth behind transacted messages, developing skills to identify and react to glitches in information transaction through media literacy. It also includes specific areas such as the meaning and definition of Misinformation and Dis-Information and their impact on society, non-factual and misinterpreting information shared through digital media, the social impact of facts presented in an emotional language, authenticity of information etc. "The new ICT textbook includes chapters that equip students to identify fake news and malicious content, embodying the spirit of Satyameva Jayate", said K.AnvarSadath, CEO, of KITE. Next year, when the ICT textbooks for Classes 6, 8, and 9, and 10 are revised, they will incorporate the latest developments in this field. Not only does it teach students to identify fake news and verify its authenticity, but the chapter titled 'Let's Search the Internet' in the Class 5 ICT textbook also covers how to effectively manage screen time. Similarly, the Class 7 ICT textbook chapter titled 'Let's Search and Find' elaborates on the importance of verifying the authenticity of information and explains why spreading or sharing false information is a crime. Further, the ICT textbook also includes information about the precautions to be taken before sharing information with others, the need to educate those who provide such information about its potential consequences, and the concept of copyright. In the new (same) ICT textbook for Class 7, for the first time in the country, 4 lakh students have been given the opportunity to learn Artificial Intelligence (AI). Oprah Winfrey did not file a lawsuit earlier this year after her AI doppelganger hawked a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-67703018">$37 self-help course</a> based on "missing" Bible scriptures. Neither did <keyword id="19897184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taylor-swift" source="keywords">Taylor Swift</keyword> after her recent deepfake "endorsement" of Donald Trump. When dueling deepfakes of <keyword id="19928904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tom-hanks" source="keywords">Tom Hanks</keyword> shilled for a dental plan last October and a miracle cure in August, the real Tom Hanks sued no one. Likewise, Jennifer Aniston, whose AI double recently told Facebook users that she owes her timeless bikini body to collagen supplements, did not run to the courthouse. Amid this litigation restraint, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee stands apart. He, too, has been targeted. In May, Huckabee, a Baptist minister and staunch conservative, discovered his manipulated image had been used for months in Facebook ads for CBD gummies. "CBD cured me and can save American lives," the ads quote the two-time GOP presidential candidate as saying. "It was quite the shock," Huckabee told Business Insider Wednesday. "I was just outraged." Huckabee may now be the only deepfaked American public figure who is taking his outrage to court. His lawsuit against <keyword id="19911549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="meta" source="keywords">Meta</keyword>, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, demands unspecified damages "for its malicious conduct." "Meta profited from these unlawful advertisements, and because of Meta's approval, these advertisements reached millions of Facebook users," the lawsuit alleges. An attorney and spokesperson for Meta did not return requests for comment for this story. The company is fighting to dismiss the lawsuit, an effort centered on Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act. Since 1996, Section 230 has generally immunized publishers of third-party content from lawsuits. Experts in digital law told Business Insider that Section 230 protections make it virtually impossible to successfully sue a social media platform over deepfake scam ads. So while public figures get deepfaked all the time, Huckabee v Meta, filed in federal court in Delaware, is unsurprisingly a rare effort, they said. "He's going straight into the teeth of an impressive record of courtroom futility," said Eric Goldman, a professor of digital law at Santa Clara University. Huckabee said he remains determined. "There are so many people who have been defrauded in this way, and either they don't have the energy to pursue it, or they think it's an effort in futility, which I disagree with," he said. "Quite frankly, it's kind of a Wild, Wild West approach that they've taken, that they can do whatever they want to do, and no one can touch them," he added, referring to Meta. In June, US District Court Judge P. Casey Pitts rejected Meta's argument that the case should be dismissed pretrial on Section 230 grounds. The decision means Forrest may proceed to trial on this claim: that Meta was more than just a neutral conveyor of content and, therefore, has no immunity from a negligence claim. That's Huckabee's argument in a nutshell, Poynter said. "Facebook is an advertising company," he told BI. "Almost 98% of Meta's $134 billion in revenue last year came from the sale of advertisements. Its algorithm decides how many of these ads will be sent out, and who will see them." "We argue that Meta is no longer a third-party content provider protected by 230 immunity when it manipulates and pushes an ad, through its algorithm, to the people who are most likely to buy." Goldman, the digital law professor, thinks the Forrest decision may be "an anomaly." "If I were Facebook, I would appeal," he said. Still, there are warning signs that 230 immunity is in legal jeopardy, he said. He pointed to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackout-challenge-tiktok-death-could-end-section-230-liability-protections-2024-9">Anderson v. TikTok</a>, a lawsuit on behalf of a 10-year-old girl, Nylah Anderson, who died trying the "Blackout Challenge" promoted on her TikTok feed. In August, a federal appeals court in Pennsylvania found that because its algorithm fed these videos to the girl, TikTok served as more than just a neutral repository of third-party content. The court rejected TikTok's 230 challenge, allowing the case to go forward. "They found that algorithms are content, protected by the First Amendment, so they're not covered by 230 immunity," Goldman said. "It's obviously wrong, and it will be appealed, maybe to the US Supreme Court," he added. He just remembers he was "livid." "I was getting a number of friends who were sending it to me," he remembered. "And they were saying 'What the heck is going on?'" The ads used photos of the former governor, including from his nationally syndicated talk and variety show, "Huckabee," which runs weekly on Trinity Broadcasting Network. Other photos were clearly AI-manipulated, his lawsuit says. "There is no real photo of me like it. It looks like I'm crying," Huckabee told BI. "I'm in a bright red paisley shirt, and it looks like I'm at the end of my rope." At least one of the ads took the form of a Fox News story, the lawsuit alleges. All of the ads falsely said Huckabee was leaving Trinity Broadcasting because he had nearly died after a four-year battle against an auto-immune disease — but that the "miracle" of Fortin-brand CBD gummies had saved his life. The ads also falsely claimed that because he'd switched to gummies, he no longer needed to take opioid painkillers. Fortin is still selling CBD gummies online without the help of a bogus Huckabee endorsement. The company is not named as a defendant in Huckabee's lawsuit, and a representative did not respond to requests for comment for this story. Huckabee said he was soon inundated with calls from friends, fans, people from the network, and sponsors from the show, all wondering if he was really sick, really quitting, and really popping CBD gummies. "Governor Huckabee does not endorse CBD gummies or any marijuana derivative," Poynter told BI. "For decades, Governor Huckabee has been against marijuana and its derivatives." The former governor said he has more than 2 million followers on Facebook and has had beef with Meta before, including when it temporarily froze his account after he criticized the government's COVID response. "Everybody I know has been Facebook jail," he said. "If they're monitoring the content of people who don't have that much content, why can't they see these ads?" Huckabee said he is no fan of Section 230 immunity. The law was enacted to encourage the growth of the internet and protect free speech, but "I don't think we have to worry about that now," he said. "We have to worry about how the internet has become a monster and it's gobbling up people's lives," he added. As for his lawsuit, "We're going to take it as far as we can take it," Huckabee said. Meta is due to file additional papers supporting its motion to dismiss the Huckabee lawsuit on Monday. A woman bicycling with a <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/FacebookAIslop/status/1805576630254883231">basket full of babies and burritos</a>.This is all "AI slop," the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/11/style/ai-search-slop.html">new term</a> describing the sudden flood of garbage AI-generated content, from ebooks to viral photos. Slop is everywhere on the internet, but its most pure version exists on Facebook.This is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bad-ai-art-is-overrunning-facebook-2024-3">Shrimp Jesus</a> kind of slop: bizarre, obviously fake, and sometimes vaguely unsettling in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trypophobia-a-fear-of-holes-2015-8">trypophobia-triggering</a> way. Common themes involve old people holding a birthday cake asking you to wish them a happy birthday; babies doing things babies shouldn't do; snakes eating buses, bikes, or other vehicles overloaded with hundreds of babies or some other cargo; soldiers with prosthetic legs; women with missing limbs and huge busts; and Jesus. The images are often sort of eerily exploitative.These tend to be posted on Facebook pages with generic-sounding names and captions that don't necessarily reflect the photo, like "why don't photos like this ever trend," or "beautiful cabin crew," and "Scarlett Johansson" for an image of Jesus built into the hood of a car.Why slop? The best explanation is that the Facebook pages posting these are making bait for potential scam targets, helping scammers identify gullible people in the comments who they can potentially extract money from.Another possibility is that posting these images is a good tactic to build up a large page audience, which can be lucrative.The vague similarities among the pages suggest that the AI slop is being posted by a network of shady actors based in countries outside the US. It's spam-adjacent stuff — if not outright spam.This slop is sloppy enough that it can sometimes be very funny — and there's even an X account, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/FacebookAIslop">Insane Facebook AI Slop</a>, dedicated to cataloging it. It's embarrassing to Facebook that people on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter">Twitter/X</a> — X!!! a place full of bad things!!! — are laughing at Meta's poor content moderation.This has been going on for quite a few months now. 404 Media, which has been diligently covering this, described how these images are part of a larger AI-fuelled "zombie internet" full of bots talking to bots. Not too long ago, I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-ai-shrimp-jesus-zombie-internet-spam-content-2024-5">speculated</a> about why Meta hasn't cracked down, but considering nothing has seemed to change, I find myself wondering yet again …<h2 id="501fb8d8-1e46-4a8f-8576-8fae7a849914">Why doesn't Facebook just ban this slop?</h2>Here are a few of my theories:<ul><li>These images don't technically violate any rules — no nudity or other forbidden imagery.</li><li>Facebook did make a warning label to note an image might be made with AI when its systems detect it.</li><li>Users actually enjoy this content — you see plenty of people in the comments who are probably duped and think it's a real image, or maybe just an interesting artistic rendition. Why mess with content people like?</li><li>Facebook does ban this stuff, but only at an account level when the account posting it engages in obvious spam tactics. But not all of the accounts are spamming.</li><li>Slop is often scam-adjacent, but the accounts posting it may not be directly always the ones doing the scams, so they don't get banned.</li><li>Facebook worries that banning this kind of AI content will set a bad precedent because it wants to encourage people to make stuff with its own <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-llama-3-chatbot-mark-zuckerberg-existential-risks-2024-4">Llama 3</a> tools.</li><li>Facebook doesn't like the AI slop but has bigger things to worry about.</li><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.404media.co/has-facebook-stopped-trying/">Facebook has stopped trying</a>. This is what Jason Koebler from 404 Media speculates. Meta's previous commitments to working with researchers and academics have fizzled away, and the scrutiny over content moderation (helped by Elon Musk lowering the bar to the basement) has shifted. Meta is penny-pinching and focusing on the newest shiny thing (AI tools, Instagram, the Metaverse) and cares less and less about Facebook, this theory goes. Basically, they don't give a shit anymore.</li></ul>I imagine that some combination of all of these might be true to some degree. A representative for Meta didn't reply to questions about why they don't simply ban AI slop. (I had recently also asked a VP of product at Meta about why they don't just ban this slop and he sort of changed the subject; it seemed like maybe he wasn't sure what I was talking about.)<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-scandals-last-decade-while-running-facebook-2019-12">Facebook has gone through so many different flavors of spammy/scammy engagementbait</a>, from Minions memes to videos from magicians, to actually dangerous fake news and extremist groups. If the AI slop isn't suggesting you get together in real life and overthrow the government, hey, Facebook has seen way worse.

Replying to supplementary questions in the Upper House, Minister for State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said the government is very much concerned about the freedom of speech and freedom of expression. "These YouTube channels are sponsored from Pakistan," he said. On fake news through newspapers, the minister said the Press Council of India is an autonomous statutory body and takes care of the journalists ethics code. "Journalists have to follow ethics code. Wherever they have not followed the ethics code under the Press Council Act Section 14, action has to be initiated. In more than 150 cases, we took action against them," he said. Asked about Techfog app roles in spreading fake news, Murugan said the government has established a fact check unit, which has responded to more than 30,000 queries. This unit is also verifying viral fake news, he added. According to an official statement, the ministry on January 21 had ordered blocking of 35 YouTube based news channels and two websites which were involved in spreading anti-India fake news in a coordinated manner over digital media. A "Fact Check Unit" has been setup under the Press Information Bureau of this Ministry in November, 2019 which takes cognisance of fake news both suo motu and by way of queries sent by citizens on its portal or through e-mail and WhatsApp. "The unit responds to relevant queries with correct information when the same pertains to Central Government or forwards them to States/UTs in other cases. The Unit also maintains a Twitter account @PIBFactcheck and posts cases of fake news, being busted, on the same on regular basis. PIB Fact Check Unit has so far responded to 30,533 actionable queries," he said. For print media, the Press Council of India (PCI), a statutory autonomous body set up under the Press Council Act, 1978, has framed "Norms of Journalistic Conduct" for adherence by the media. These norms emphasise the principles of accuracy and fairness as well as pre-publication verification. The PCI has formulated specific norms to refrain print media from publication/ dissemination of fake or false news. For electronic media (Television), all TV channels are required to adhere to the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. As per the code, programmes should not contain anything obscene defamatory, deliberate, false and suggestive innuendos and half-truths. For digital news, the government has notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 on February 25 2021, under the Information Technology Act, 2000 which inter alia provides for a Code of Ethics for adherence by digital news publishers. "Appropriate action is taken in cases where violation of norms, codes etc., are found. The government also issues advisory from time to time to the media to adhere to the laid down codes," Thakur said.

"We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren't just fun to use, but also good for people's well-being," CEO Mark Zuckerberg <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10104413015393571">wrote</a> when he announced the change in 2018.But besides a few older relatives and college acquaintances, nobody I know posts much. Instead, my feed is a mix of group posts, ads, and weird AI images — in my case, mostly of fake houses and resorts, perhaps because I belong to a few travel groups.The comments section of those images is where things turn dark.A mix of scammers eager to sell you cryptocurrencies and actual humans comment on these photos. The former I expect in every online forum, but the latter is a sad reflection of low media literacy — and researchers are starting to notice.Last week, a duo from Stanford University and Georgetown University <a target="_blank" href="https://fsi9-prod.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/2024-03/DiRestaGoldstein_AIGeneratedImages_Preprint.pdf">published a paper</a> — not yet peer-reviewed — about AI images on Facebook, after studying 120 Facebook pages through early March. They wrote that AI-generated images appear because Facebook's algorithm thinks they'll lead to more engagement — and some of the posts they tracked did go viral.Unsurprisingly, the researchers found that some people engaging with this content didn't seem to realize it was AI-generated, and that the groups behind these pages weren't up to much good. The researchers wrote that some of the page operators engaged in "unambiguously manipulative behaviors" like stealing pages and adding fake followers to boost their status.The "Thank Jesus For Everything" <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/appalachianartists">page</a>, from which I sourced the visuals in this story, looks exactly like what the researchers found. The page, originally dedicated to showcasing local musicians, was hacked in January 2023, its original owner told me.After the takeover, the page started reposting the kind of Boomer religious images — think prayers in Comic Sans font over bad clip art — that have long circulated on Facebook. Those images came from another page called VFit Athlete, an Indiana-based gym whose owner told me it, too, was hacked, and which has also since pivoted to AI Jesus. Together, the pages have 130,000 followers — a drop in the bucket of Meta's 3 billion monthly active users.The true purpose of these pages remains murky: Beyond the obvious comment scams, they could be boosting page views to use for other purposes later, like boosting misinformation — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/09/16/1035851/facebook-troll-farms-report-us-2020-election/">a cycle we've seen on Facebook with other pages that predate generative AI</a>.Meta did not respond to my requests for comment, including about the hacked pages.<div type="image" title="Cruise ship Jesus - Generative AI" height="848" width="844" msid="108778680" hostid="261"></div>Facebook knows generative AI is a problem. Meta's president of global affairs said in February that the company is <a target="_blank" href="https://about.fb.com/news/2024/02/labeling-ai-generated-images-on-facebook-instagram-and-threads/">working on generative AI labels</a> it will roll out later this year. Notably, this comes in an election year that's already been<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-hampshire-democrats-received-deep-faked-calls-from-joe-biden-2024-1"> marred by generative AI issues</a>, online and off.But I don't want to see labeled generative AI content in my feed — I don't want any generative AI pictures at all. Many of the images showed the pop star engaging in sexual acts in football stadiums.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-fake-ai-images-searches-blocked-elon-musk-x-2024-1">One post uploaded by a verified user</a> on X, formerly Twitter, attracted over 45 million views before it was taken down by moderators about 17 hours later.The other investigation involves an AI-generated image of a nude woman that resembles a public figure from India. The content was posted on an Instagram account that only shares AI-generated images of Indian women.In this case, Meta failed to delete the content after it was reported twice. The user appealed to the Board and Meta found its decision to keep the content was an error. It then removed the post for violating the Bullying and Harassment Community Standard.The Board said it selected these cases to see whether Meta is effectively addressing explicit AI-generated imagery.Politicians, public figures, and business leaders have spoken out about deepfakes and the risks they pose.White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre previously said lax enforcement of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-fake-ai-images-searches-blocked-elon-musk-x-2024-1">deepfakes disproportionately impacts women</a> as well as girls "who are the overwhelming targets."Jean-Pierre also said that while legislation should play a role in tackling this issue, social media platforms should be banning harmful AI content on their own.Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called the nude deepfakes of <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/26/24052196/satya-nadella-microsoft-ai-taylor-swift-fakes-response">Taylor Swift "alarming and terrible"</a> and called for more protection from these images.Forget just porn; deepfakes could also be used to influence elections. It asked for comments suggesting strategies on how to address this issue and feedback on its severity.The oversight board will deliberate on the decisions over the next few weeks before posting the outcome, it said in the announcement. While the board's recommendations aren't binding, Meta has to respond to them within 60 days.
