But perhaps not for long.A fungal disease <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cavendish-banana-may-go-extinct-disease-2021-6">threatens to wipe Cavendish bananas</a> off the face of the Earth. Some scientists are genetically modifying the fruit to be more resistant to disease.But the best solution to the problem, some argue, is for farmers to completely overhaul banana production and stop growing only one variety of fruit altogether.<h2>Why Cavendish bananas dominate the global market</h2>There are over 1,000 varieties of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ripe-unripe-bananas-which-are-better-for-you-2018-7">bananas</a>, but about 47% that humans eat are Cavendish bananas (Musa acuminata).<div type="image" title="Banana plantations at La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain." height="1240" width="2415" msid="104626119" hostid="261" sizebytes="501224"></div>Cavendish dominates the global banana market for several reasons. One, it's resistant to some of the major banana-killing diseases; two, it has a long shelf life; and three, farmers can typically grow more Cavendish bananas than other varieties on the same amount of land."Because of all these reasons, Cavendish becomes a very practical product," journalist Dan Koeppel, author of the book "Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World," told Insider.But the Cavendish is under threat from a fungus that infects the plant. The infection is called Panama Disease (Fusarium wilt) tropical race 4.TR4 infection starts in the banana tree's roots and then spreads, ultimately disabling the plant's ability to absorb water or conduct photosynthesis. Eventually, the tree dies as a result.<div type="image" title="Close up of unripe, green bananas growing on a tree." height="1414" width="2121" msid="104626120" hostid="261" sizebytes="110936"></div><h2>Panama disease is a serial banana killer</h2>What's happening to Cavendish bananas has happened before to another popular banana variety called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/banana-fruit-changes-history-2016-2?IR=T">Gros Michel</a>.Gros Michel was the "main export banana in the first half of last century," James Dale, a professor and leader of the banana biotechnology program at Queensland University of Technology, told Insider.But a predecessor to TR4, called tropical race 1, began infecting bananas in 1876. By the 1950s, it had completely decimated Gros Michel farms, forcing banana producers across the globe to look for a new variety.<div type="image" title="Black and white photo of workers sorting Cavendish bananas at a farm in 1982." height="678" width="1024" msid="104626122" hostid="261" sizebytes="118488"></div>In the following years, "Cavendish became the leading export banana replacing Gros Michel because it was immune to TR1," Dale added.In 1997, scientists detected a new strain (TR4) near Darwin, Australia, that infected Cavendish. By 2015, it had spread to the banana farms in Queensland, the largest banana-producing state in Australia."Since then it has spread to India and China, the world's largest producers of bananas. It has also spread to the Middle East and Africa and very recently was found in South America," Dale told Insider.<h2>How scientists are trying to save the Cavendish</h2>Some plant pathologists don't believe that the Cavendish banana will meet the same fate as Gros Michel."The disease moves slowly, so we have at least a decade before the impact is drastic," Dale said.Also, many scientists are working on TR4-resistant Cavendish or a resistant replacement for Cavendish.<div type="image" title="Fungi Fusarium which produce mycotoxins in cereal crops including bananas." height="1414" width="2121" msid="104626123" hostid="261" sizebytes="123342"></div>For example, Dale and his colleagues have developed a <a href="https://www.qut.edu.au/news?id=186769" target="_blank" rel="noopener">genetically modified Cavendish called QCAV-4</a>, which they said is highly resistant to TR4. Another research group led by scientists at the University of Cambridge is exploring <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/new-grafting-technique-could-combat-the-disease-threatening-cavendish-bananas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">grafting</a> as a possible solution. Grafting tissue from one plant onto another can alter certain characteristics of that plant, like making it more resistant to disease, per the University of Cambridge.Another team at the <a href="https://www.promusa.org/GCTCV-119" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Taiwan Banana Research Institute</a> is attempting a form of natural selection. The team takes Cavendish seedlings and exposes them to TR4. The small portion of seedlings that fair best then go onto additional experiments to ultimately help the Cavendish evolve to become resistant to TR4, absent of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/gmo-pros-and-cons">genetic modification</a>."I would say with certainty that there will be a solution before the export market for Cavendish is severely affected," Dale added.But some banana experts argue that such solutions won't work long term.<h2>There's no single solution to the problem</h2>"It's true that there is some resistance, but I'd say right now, nobody is even close to solving the problem," Koeppel told Insider, adding "The answer is going to be the end of monoculture. The answer is variety."He suggests that replacing the current banana cultivar with a new disease-resistant variety is a short-term solution because the fungi can also come up with a new and more powerful strain in the future.<div type="image" title="Bananas at a market in Thailand." height="681" width="1024" msid="104626125" hostid="261" sizebytes="108128"></div>The real solution is to mass produce and sell more than one banana variety because the more genetically diverse bananas are, the less likely they'll be susceptible to diseases, he said.Plus, it would also reduce the dependence of humans on one type of banana."Apples are a huge example of this. Today If I go to any supermarket in the US, I will find between five and 30 apple varieties," Koeppel said. "Apple growers are going nuts trying to introduce new varieties naturally as well as through hybridization, and genetic modification."This reduces the risk of disease, offers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/news/this-new-variety-of-apple-has-a-10-million-hype-machine-behind-it-160and-farmers-are-hoping-it-can-save-washingtons-apple-industry/articleshow/73278319.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more variety</a> to customers, and as a result, "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oldest-apple-orchard-in-america-apple-picking-season-2021-9?IR=T">apple growers</a> are still making a lot more money because of this," he said.The problem with bananas, Koeppel said, is that there are far fewer varieties, and they're all cheap."If you add variety, the investment will pay off very quickly because suddenly some people will pay $4 a pound for certain bananas," Koeppel told Insider.Dale, on the other hand, isn't so sure. "Price is the driver," of banana sales in his country Australia. He added, "Most people will purchase Cavendish because it is cheap."Introducing a wider variety of bananas would not only drive up costs but would also require a major overhaul in how we transport bananas — since you can't just store them in freezers for long periods like apples, Dale said."The export market is dependent on harvesting Cavendish green and then inducing ripening by ethylene gassing. This is done during transport and is very tightly controlled and tailored to Cavendish," Dale said, adding, "If there were multiple varieties of bananas exported then it is likely that each would need specific defined ripening conditions. And of course the price would increase."There seems to be no single solution to the problem that's working, so far. Perhaps history is bound to repeat itself and Cavendish will no longer be the banana of choice in the near future.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Cheetahs are being reintroduced to India after being declared extinct in the country in 1952. </li><li>The reintroduction effort is aimed at creating a viable population of wild cheetahs.</li></ul>In mid-September, eight African cheetahs were airlifted from Namibia and brought to India, marking the first time the big cat stepped foot in the wild in the country since being declared extinct more than 70 years ago.The reintroduction, which was years in the making, was celebrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on whose 72nd birthday the cats arrived, as well as by other cheetah advocates and scientists."When the cheetah will run again … grasslands will be restored, biodiversity will increase and eco-tourism will get a boost," <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/cheetahs-reintroduced-to-india-after-going-extinct-in-the-country-70-years-ago">Modi</a>, who released the cats into their temporary enclosure, said, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/16/world/asia/cheetah-relocation-india.html">adding</a>: "Along with these cheetahs, the nature-loving consciousness of India has also awakened with full force."However, some big-cat experts told Insider while they support the idea of reintroducing wild, free-ranging cheetahs to India, the current effort seems more like a marketing stunt — one that's not sufficiently based in science.<h2>Saving cheetahs from extinction</h2>Cheetahs, the world's fastest land animal, were once widespread in India. They were declared extinct in the country in 1952 as a result of hunting and habitat loss."It is the only large mammal that India has lost," S.P. Yadav, secretary of India's National Tiger Conservation Authority, said, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/16/world/asia/cheetah-relocation-india.html">The New York Times</a>. "It is our moral and ethical responsibility to bring them back."Cheetah populations worldwide are also on the decline, with the total number in the wild estimated to be about 6,500, according to the <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/219/124366642">International Union for Conservation of Nature</a>. The big cats now occupy just 9% of their historical range. The vast majority of the remaining cheetahs are in Africa, while a small amount of the <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/iran-asiatic-cheetahs-environment-/31646781.html">critically endangered Asiatic cheetahs</a>, the same subspecies that used to prowl India, remain in Iran."To save cheetahs from extinction, we need to create permanent places for them on Earth. India has areas of grassland and forest habitat, which are appropriate for this species," Laurie Marker, founder of the <a href="https://cheetah.org/">Cheetah Conservation Fund</a>, which has helped coordinate the reintroduction, told <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/09/17/india-cheetahs-kuno-namibia/">The Washington Post</a>.The relocated cheetahs include five females and two males between the ages of two and six. The eight cheetahs were dropped off at Kuno National Park, south of New Delhi, where they are being quarantined and observed. The plan is to release the cheetahs into the larger national park, where they can prey on animals like deer and antelope, within a matter of months.The <a href="https://wii.gov.in/images//images/documents/publications/action_plan_cheetah_introduction_jan_2022.pdf">reintroduction plan</a>, which is estimated to cost about $11 million, aims to establish a viable, free-ranging population of cheetahs. The cheetahs could face conflict and competition for food with other predators, like leopards, and there may not be enough natural prey to sustain the planned population size.Arjun M. Gopalaswamy, a wildlife and statistical ecologist who researches big cat and large mammal ecology, told Insider that as the plan currently stands, there's not enough space for the cheetahs.Gopalaswamy noted a paper he published in the journal Ecography in 2020 that found the density of a cheetah population, or the number of cheetahs per the amount of space, to be one per 100 sq km. The amount of space set aside for India's cheetahs is 750 sq km. With those numbers, the area would be large enough for only 7-8 cheetahs, not the dozens that are planned."This simply means that the Cheetah Introduction Action Plan has overestimated the number of cheetahs India's reserves can hold by several fold," Gopalaswamy, who is the founder and chief scientist of Carnassials Global, which provides science consulting to governments and NGOs, said. He added that he supports reintroduction efforts, but that the current plan in India "appears to rely almost completely on the cheetahs and their charisma" and that instead, he would like to see "a fully science-based approach."K. Ullas Karanth, the emeritus director of the Bangalore-based <a href="https://cwsindia.org/">Centre for Wildlife Studies</a>, agreed that the current plan was not grounded in science and told Insider it "will not lead to a restoration of a viable population of wild cheetahs, sustaining itself naturally in the long run."Karanth said the population would be augmented by bringing in additional cheetahs and other animals in order to boost the supply of available prey. Such a system, he said, "cannot be called reintroduction at all.""That would be simply a captive population of cheetahs in a larger version of a zoo," he said, calling it "largely a gimmick and a colossal waste of money."Karanth noted that cheetahs have naturally low reproduction rates and even in the best habitats in Africa the vast majority of cheetahs die before reaching breeding age. He said in India the cheetahs will face denser populations of humans and livestock, dogs, and predators like leopards, making their survival even more challenging. "I think the Indian bureaucracy and the 'foreign experts' have sold a 'creaky used car' to the gullible Indian public, media, and political leadership," Karanth said.Some conservationists have also noted that effort would be better spent trying to first save cheetah populations where they are already established but on the decline, before focusing on reintroduction.Still, proponents of the project are optimistic. Yadvendradev V. Jhala, dean of the Wildlife Institute of India and the lead scientist of the reintroduction effort, pointed to the success India has had in boosting other big cat populations, such as <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fd41586-019-03267-z">tigers</a>."The cheetah is a magnificent animal, it's a big magnet for ecotourism," Jhala told <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationalgeographic.com%2Fanimals%2Farticle%2Finside-the-controversial-plan-to-reintroduce-cheetahs-to-india">National Geographic</a>. That led them to discover the Education Department's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-idr-student-debt-relief-account-adjustment-biden-2023-7">one-time account adjustment initiative</a>, which allowed the department to evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage on January 31 stating: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out."It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there.""The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation," he said.While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said that discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.The Education Department continues to cancel student-debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-student-loan-forgiveness-borrowers-save-plan-pslf-debt-cancellation-2024-4"> wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers</a>, some of whom benefited from the adjustments.Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief is also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India."It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."<h2>'I've been really lucky'</h2>While Lambdin said he feels as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he also recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.For example, as BI has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-bills-are-wrong-borrowers-servicers-fixing-errors-education-2023-11">previously reported</a>, some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet due to paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-repayment-more-hurdles-gop-budget-cut-proposal-2023-7">funding for federal student-loan servicers</a> is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers regarding their payment progress from customer service."There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-company-mohela-late-statements-borrowers-biden-withholding-pay-2023-10">delayed billing statements</a>. When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mohela-reversing-student-loan-forgiveness-payments-reinstated-pslf-borrowers-forbearance-2024-2">made a mistake with the forgiveness</a>, reinstating their payments months later.The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-bad-customer-service-education-department-oversight-repayment-2023-11">established an accountability framework</a> to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.The department is also in the process of crafting its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-announces-new-student-loan-forgiveness-plan-who-qualifies-relief-2024-4">new student-loan forgiveness plan</a> — it recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-forgiveness-plan-how-to-submit-public-comment-relief-2024-4">released the draft text of the rules</a>, which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider a range of options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom."There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening, but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."

However, it was back to being in second place after markets closed yesterday, March 13. Even ₹4,500 crore couldn't fight the effects of the coronavirus The massive dip in TCS value comes after the company met on March 11 and declared an interim dividend of ₹12 per share — a total payout of ₹4,503 crore. In fact, the announcement of dividends did nothing to slow the stock's downward trajectory this week.

The curved display and the 144Hz refresh rate are usually not found in this price segment, so that is good to have. I watched a couple of movies and played a few games on the device and the display offered experience. The device comes with HDR10+ support, offering a good visual experience while watching movies and shows. The 1200 nits brightness allows you to view the display clearly in direct sunlight. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Software and performance" comment="subhead" text="Software and performance">Software and performance</cmsannotation> The software is one of the areas where the Moto Edge 40 offers both good and bad experiences. It runs on Android 13 out of the box with the company’s My UX and offers a clutter-free UI without any bloatware or intrusive advertisements. While it is not stock, it offers a near-stock experience. Unlike a lot of devices in this segment, you don’t have to worry about pre-installed applications from third parties on the Moto Edge 40. The smartphone comes with the Moto app pre-installed which lets you customise the theme with different colour schemes and icon shapes. You can also enable up to nine different gestures to quickly access the camera, take a screenshot, unlock the device and more. Coming to the not-so-good experiences, the device does come with a few bugs, with occasional stutters and app issues. While this can be fixed with an update, the company hasn’t pushed one yet. The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset and comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. Facebook also said Friday that it is going to start labeling posts from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-will-label-newsworthy-posts-that-violate-policies-2020-6">politicians that break its rules but are "newsworthy" enough to remain on the platform</a>.The boycott is another example of the increased willingness of big brands to take a stand, as they respond to pressure from their own employees and customers. The real solution to pervasive inequality might be guaranteeing every citizen has a job to go to, argues economist Pavlina Tcherneva. It's an especially pressing matter as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/600-federal-unemployment-benefit-will-expire-on-friday-without-deal-2020-7">congress failed to extend</a> the expanded unemployment benefits that have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/600-unemployment-benefits-universal-basic-income-safety-net-republicans-2020-7">kept the economy afloat</a> amid the pandemic while unemployment is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-may-and-june-jobs-comeback-didnt-solve-double-digit-unemployment-2020-7">still in double digits</a>.Tcherneva is a leading researcher on monetary policy and one of several economists who have advocated variations on "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/modern-monetary-theory-mmt-explained-aoc-2019-3">Modern Monetary Theory</a>" in the early 21st century. This school of thought is related to "<a href="https://www.postkeynesian.net/post-keynesian-economics/#:~:text=Post%2DKeynesian%20Economics%20(PKE),underlies%20much%20of%20mainstream%20economics.">post-Keynesianism</a>," and advocates much bigger government spending than even the great economist John Maynard Keynes proposed during the Great Depression.Tcherneva, an associate professor of economics at Bard College and a researcher at the Levy Economic Institute, recently authored a new book, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Case-Job-Guarantee-Pavlina-Tcherneva/dp/1509542094">The Case for a Job Guarantee</a>." In it, she argued that addressing poverty and destitution is a multifaceted problem, and that a jobs guarantee comes closer to solving it than UBI.While automation will kill some jobs, a popular argument <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/truck-drivers-andrew-yang-self-driving-2019-9">Silicon Valley elites give</a> when advocating for UBI, giving citizens cash doesn't necessarily address all problems related to wellbeing if they still live in a polluted community or a food desert. Federally guaranteed jobs solves two problems at once: communities would be able to hire for jobs that specifically address their needs and unemployment would no longer exist. "The vision that I'm questioning that we are helpless in the face of technological change," Tcherneva said in an interview with Business Insider. "There would be automation, and we can still create good employment opportunities for people who need them." <h2>Tcherneva says we shouldn't just reduce unemployment — we should eradicate it completely</h2>In her book, Tcherneva said that economists should focus on ways to eradicate joblessness altogether, instead of assuming there will always be a "natural" rate of unemployment. In the US, the Federal Reserve accepts the "natural rate of unemployment," accounting for workers changing jobs or leaving the job market, to be about 4%.But any amount of unemployment can devastate a family or a community, Tcherneva said. An increase in a neighborhood's unemployment rate by 10% leads to a 1.5-year loss in life expectancy, per the <a href="https://apnews.com/ea3be7fb82bf4bec90a00d75957f833b">AP</a>. The <a href="https://www.urban.org/sites/default/files/publication/23921/412887-Consequences-of-Long-Term-Unemployment.PDF">Urban Institute</a> think tank finds that communities with a higher share of long-term unemployed workers have higher rates of crime and violence. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2094529/">Various</a> <a href="https://business.time.com/2011/06/06/is-the-economy-hurting-your-kids-report-card/">studies</a> indicate that children of unemployed people tend to preform worse in school. "We don't talk about a natural rate of homelessness," Tcherneva said. "We don't say that there is some optimal level of homelessness at which the economy would be prosperous. What we attempt to do is eradicate homelessness." Tcherneva said that while many job creation programs exist, few localities have yet to experiment with federally guaranteed employment. India launched a small-scale job guarantee program for rural workers hit by the coronavirus pandemic, which led the unemployment rate to fall to 7.26%, actually <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/cmie-unemployment-rate-back-to-pre-lockdown-level-of-8-5/articleshow/76540727.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=cppst&amp;from=mdramp;from=mdr">lower than before the country went on lockdown</a>. In the US, Tcherneva said program funding for federally guaranteed jobs could come from the money allocated toward county unemployment offices. Instead of dedicating money to skills retraining programs or resume building, these offices could create and offer a public service job within the community. Tcherneva said her biggest worry after the pandemic will be "normalized" unemployment. CNBC reports that 17.6 million unemployed Americans <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/01/millions-of-unemployed-americans-wont-return-to-their-old-jobs.html">may not return to their pre-pandemic jobs</a>, citing a study by the <a href="https://www.epi.org/blog/nearly-11-of-the-workforce-is-out-of-work-with-zero-chance-of-getting-called-back-to-a-prior-job/">Economic Policy Institute</a>. Some recruiting experts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-mullings-gig-work-will-replace-full-time-after-coronavirus-2020-6">predict</a> that previously full-time workers may shift to the gig economy. As private-sector jobs get wiped out, guaranteed public jobs could put an end to a flawed system. "Even the experiments which show that people do better with cash show that people don't stop looking for work," Tcherneva said. But after the pandemic, many jobseekers won't be able to find a job if they aren't guaranteed one — resulting in a "cruel game of musical chairs," as Tcherneva describes, that happens when people are competing for fewer and fewer jobs.

Congress' failure to extend the stimulus reveals a broken safety net, but a jobs guarantee could wipe out unemployment for good

Mumbai, Feb 1 () The Sensex logged its biggest single-day plunge in more than a decade on Saturday after the Union Budget failed to live up to market expectations of growth-boosting measures and fiscal discipline.
 The benchmarks, which started on a shaky note, tanked soon after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pegged the fiscal deficit at 3.8 per cent for the current fiscal, compared to the earlier target of 3.3 per cent of GDP.
 Presenting the Union Budget for 2020-21 in Parliament, Sitharaman also proposed lower income tax slabs for those foregoing various exemptions, and removed dividend distribution tax on companies, effectively shifting the tax burden to the recipients.
 Nosediving nearly 1,275 points from the day's high, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 987.96 points or 2.43 per cent lower at 39,735.53.
 This was the benchmark's biggest drop since October 24, 2008, when it had plummeted 1,070.63 points, and the fourth biggest fall overall.
 On similar lines, the 50-share NSE Nifty plunged 300.25 points or 2.51 per cent to close at 11,661.85.
 Investor wealth, measured in terms of value of all listed shares on BSE, plunged by Rs 3,46,256.76 crore to reach Rs 1,53,04,724.97 crore.
 Since the last Budget presentation in July 2019, the Sensex has gained 222.14 points or 0.56 per cent, while the Nifty slumped 149.30 points or 1.26 per cent.
 Analysts said income tax slab rejigs stoked fears of declining inflows in tax-saving investment avenues, while the proposed transfer of dividend distribution tax to investors added to the negative sentiment.
 "The lack of major growth boosting measures in itself is negative for the equity market. The new income tax regime would also be negative for tax exempt equity savings schemes. Recasting of dividend taxation norms also seem to be on the balance negative for most domestic equity investors. Overall, the budget seem to be negative for the equity market," said Sujan Hajra, Chief Economist and Executive Director, Anand Rathi Shares &amp; Stock Brokers.
 ITC was the top laggard in the Sensex pack, tanking 6.97 per cent, after the Budget hiked the excise duty on cigarettes.
 L&amp;T, HDFC, SBI, ONGC, ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank also lost up to 5.98 per cent.
 On the other hand, TCS rallied 4.13 per cent, followed by HUL, Nestle India, Tech Mahindra and Infosys.
 In her second Budget presentation, the finance minister said certain government securities will be open for foreign investors, adding that the Centre plans to increase investment limit for FPIs in corporate bonds from 9 per cent to 15 per cent.
 Abhinav Gupta, President, Capital Market, Share India Securities, said, "We are extremely disappointed with budget. No significant announcement for industry or consumers. Name sake changes in income tax slabs only to create political mileage that may not lead to any significant changes in growth prospects in near term.
 "The FM could have made several key initiatives to spur investment and domestic consumption to address the pain points of the economy. While this budget could have focused on capital creation for nationals as well."
 Sectorally, BSE realty index plunged 7.82 per cent, followed by capital goods, industrials, finance, bankex and metal.
 IT and teck ended with gains of up to 1.41 per cent.
 "DDT removal is good as it increases dividends received in the hands of the taxpayer. However, such receipts now are taxable in their hands. Those above 20 per cent tax slab will now face more tax on their dividend income," said Archit Gupta, Founder, and CEO, ClearTax. ANS ABM

Budget blow for D-St: Sensex sinks 988 pts; Rs 3.46 lakh cr investor wealth wiped off

In November, leading telecom players Bharti Airtel, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/30-day-monthly-recharge-plans-for-prepaid-users-now-as-per-trai/articleshow/89173110.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Reliance Jio</a> and Vodafone Idea increased prepaid tariff rates by up to 25 per cent. Meta CFO Dave Wehner said in a company quarterly earnings call that <keyword id="6354576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook" source="Orion">Facebook</keyword> user growth was impacted by a few headwinds in the fourth quarter. "In Asia-Pacific and Rest of World, we believe Covid resurgences during prior periods pulled forward user growth. User growth in India was also limited by an increase in data package pricing," he informed late on Wednesday. "In addition to these factors, we believe competitive services are negatively impacting growth, particularly with younger audiences," Wehner added. Following Vodafone Idea (VIL) and Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited announced a hike in prepaid tariff rates by as much as 20 per cent, effective from December 1. Wehner further said that it was a little bit unique in the quarter in areas like India, where "we saw data plan pricing increase lead to slower growth there". "So that's another kind of unique element of the quarter on that front," he noted. According to Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak, the prepaid data price hike impacted the social media platforms and Facebook was hit among those. "There are millions of prepaid users in India and new users are fast joining the internet revolution with affordable entry-level smartphones. After the prepaid price hike, their social media usage declined which affected Facebook's growth in a price-sensitive market like ours," Pathak told IANS. According to third-party data from Statista, there are over 350 million Facebook users in India alone, making it the leading country in terms of Facebook audience size. Meta-owned WhatsApp has more than 400 million users in the country. For the first time ever, Facebook has lost daily users globally, reporting lower-than-expected ad growth that sent its stock plunging nearly 20 per cent. The massive stock drop instantly wiped out roughly $200 billion in its market value. The Meta-owned Facebook platform registered 1.929 billion daily users in the fourth quarter of 2021 -- from 1.93 billion in the previous quarter. The company confirmed that it is the first sequential decline in its history.

The latest machine is called <keyword id="14550029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dyson-v15" source="Orion">Dyson V15</keyword> Detect and is touted as the most powerful and intelligent cordless vacuum cleaner to date; it better be as it's priced at a whopping ₹62,900, which makes it one of the most expensive cordless vacuum cleaners in the country. The vacuum cleaner is the most popular product from the company for its visually distinctive design, and it's been among the favorites of many ever since it debuted in India. Having used the previous models of the machine, I can say the functionality is also as good as the design. Although, I am not sure of its durability in Indian homes as I've never used them for more than a month or two. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 1" msid="93143385" hostid="261" sizebytes="277760" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Dyson V15 Detect still looks the same, but doesn&amp;#39;t feel old.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The V15 Detect has been with me for around a month, and so far, it's been a great experience using it. It is said to have 1.5 times more suction and 54% more bin capacity than the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. This means the suction is more powerful and can now store more debris in the bin. Why is the price so high? The price is not surprising for those aware of Dyson's products. As per the company, they usually carry a premium price tag for their design, service, and innovative technology. In addition, it has some great-sounding tech built inside, like a laser on the cleaning head to highlight microscopic dust particles, a sensor to track evidence of cleaning by gauging particle data, self-adjusting suction intensity, and a digital motor apart. All this in a good-looking cordless vacuum experience without compromising suction power. So I decided to test all of these features and see whether it does what it promises, and if yes, is it worth the premium? Design and build: Same futuristic laser blaster design <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 2" msid="93143451" hostid="261" sizebytes="190122" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The bin on the V15 Detect is larger than its predecessor.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>As I mentioned, the design is similar to the V11 Absolute Pro, with a slightly larger 0.75-liter bin and handheld unit weighing 3.1kg. Unfortunately, the weight takes away the ease of use; although I didn't have an issue, someone like my 55-year-old mother would not be able to run it for a long stretch. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 Detect" height="900" width="1200" msid="93143692" hostid="261" sizebytes="2066023"></div>The increased weight is also because it has got some significant upgrades on the inside over its predecessor. The most prominent one is the 230W motor which is more powerful than the V11. Further, an acoustic piezo sensor tells the amount and type of dust particles it picks on an LCD and the remaining battery run time. I couldn't verify the particle data, but the battery stats are reliable so far. The particle stats essentially tell how dirty the floor is before and after cleaning. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15" msid="93143588" hostid="261" sizebytes="1669657" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The click and attach mechanism for attachments is still the same as seen on V11 range.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The attachment mechanism remains the same. It has a simple click of a button to detach and insert to attach extensions and attachments. I really like this element of the Dyson design. Removing or adding parts to their products is a very satisfying experience and can quickly be done by anyone as it doesn't ask for added power or precision. That said, I faced some issues while opening the bin flap of its predecessor, which seems to be fixed on this one and is no longer flimsy. Although, it's still the exact push-to-eject mechanism as before. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 5" msid="93143776" hostid="261" sizebytes="1530850" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The dust sticks to the bin&amp;#39;s surface, which is why regular cleaning is a must.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The quality of the material is consistent across the vacuum and its attachments. It also has a detachable battery. That means you can invest in a spare battery and double the output. I miss a design feature on this machine: a lock switch for the power trigger. Right now, I must keep one finger on the button while using it. While not having a lock may avoid accidents, it's also tiring for some. So much so that I felt the need for it in just 15 minutes of cleaning. That's also because it's heavy. I'll have no discomfort putting one finger busy for long if this was a lighter machine. Attachments: Made to reach anywhere but not to scratch hard stains Unboxing Dyson's products is an inviting process, and repackaging them is a nightmare. Anyhow, it comes neatly packed in a box that has eight attachments. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 5" msid="93143945" hostid="261" sizebytes="80914" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Dyson V15 Detect&amp;#39;s packaing is neat.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>There are two main cleaning heads of all. The first is the Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head with a soft brush bar meant to clean hard floors without damaging them. Note that this is the only one with the green laser and the one I used the most at my home, where there's a mix of marble and tile flooring. The laser projects a green beam in front of the cleaning head, exposing the microscopic dust particles on the floor. This particular feature is an addition to those obsessed with cleaning. I had a similar individual at my home, and trust me, they did not let the vacuum cleaner rest unless it died. Despite getting the floor cleaned with conventional 'jhadu and pochha' (broom and mop) in the afternoon, this laser showed a floor full of fine dust after a few hours. What's better is that you can clean floors even in the dark. Imagine someone with a habit of compulsive cleaning having this at home - they're going to have one arm more muscular than the other. Jokes aside, this feature not just wants you to clean more but also shows how dirty the floors are even when not visible to the naked eye. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 6" msid="93144434" hostid="261" sizebytes="1757057" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The fluffy laser cleaner head is very effective on hard floor.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The other cleaning head is the High-Torque, which is noisier and more powerful against bigger particles, hair, and rigid surfaces. It also has a layer of polycarbonate teeth which also scratches and collects soiled dust. A miniature version of this cleaning head, the Hair Screw Tool, is designed for smaller tasks that the High-Torque can't reach. But I noticed a few scratches on its bottom after cleaning my wooden cupboard, which is a letdown. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 7" msid="93144459" hostid="261" sizebytes="1298159" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;In a weird incident, the Hair Screw Tool got scratched after I used it on wood.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>Both the cleaning heads are movable, so you don't have to lift and change the cleaning path. Instead, you can tilt it to either side to turn the head in different directions. In addition, it comes with four more attachments that allow it to reach tight spaces like gaps between sofas, keyboards, cars, under the bed, and similar. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 Detect comes with seven attachments, each for different purposes." msid="93144498" hostid="261" sizebytes="90400"></div>Lastly, you get a wall mount to make a stand for the machine and a storage clip that lets you attach two accessories to the extension tube’s barrel. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 8" msid="93144559" hostid="261" sizebytes="1974179" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;You get a storage clip that lets you attach two accessories to the extension tube’s barrel.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>These attachments cover most of the cleaning needs. But it can't mop, and that's a need in typical Indian households. It also fails to remove dry stains on the floor. So be clear that this tool can remove dust from every corner of your house but not wipe the floor. Maintenance: Easy to keep clean and working The Dyson V15 Detect doesn't really need a lot of maintenance, but there are a few things you need to clean periodically. Dirt compartment- It is easy to clean; you just have to empty it and then wash it once in a while so that it doesn't collect debris in the corners. You might need to use a brush or a cloth to clean it. Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head roll- It comes with a soft brush roll made of a material that will need regular cold water. The laser sensor will also need cleaning if you use it regularly. High Torque brush roll- You can detach the brush rolls by removing the side cover using a coin. Then slide out the brush roll to clear debris or hair without damaging the bristles. HEPA filter- The HEPA filter is found on the top of the handheld unit, right below the LCD. It can be removed by twisting the purple head anti-clockwise. Like the fluffy brush roll, this must be washed under cold water when the machine indicates it. Make sure to put it back after drying it, and it's fixed properly. Performance: It sucks so well that it blows away every other cordless alternative This is where the Dyson V15 Detect shuts down the alternates and wins even at a higher price. After using it, I can confidently say that its only competition in terms of performance is a Dyson vacuum cleaner. The Indian market is still short of its alternatives; an advantage Dyson is leveraging. I shifted to a new house in the first week of July, and guess who did most of the cleaning? This machine. I got a chance to use it on hard floors, small carpets, sofas, mattresses, car, and cupboards, and I'm pretty impressed with how quickly and easily it cleans all types of places and surfaces. The cleaning heads do a brilliant job. Especially the laser head is great at picking up microscopic dust. Pass it through the floor once, and it's all gone. But as I mentioned, it doesn't mop, and it doesn't scrub stains off the surfaces. Charging and battery life The first bummer after paying almost ₹63K for a vacuum cleaner is that it takes five hours to charge from 0-100%. That's a common issue with cordless vacuum cleaners. And with all that suction power, it only cleans for an hour in the best possible case. Put it on a thick carpet, which will come down to 40 minutes on 'Eco' mode. <div type="image" title="Dyson V15 10" msid="93144682" hostid="261" sizebytes="1582781" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;LCD displays the suction modes. Auto is best for most requirements.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>It has three modes- Eco, Auto, and Boost. Eco mode is the most power efficient and provides light suction, which is suitable for tile and marble floors. Auto mode adjusts the suction power as needed to give you a balance of cleaning and battery efficiency. And Boost mode uses the full force of the machine and offers lesser battery backup. With a mixed-use on a marble floor, mattresses, and others, I got around 43 minutes in Eco mode, 19 minutes in Auto mode, and 11 minutes in Boost mode. If you have a big house requiring over an hour of cleaning, buying an additional battery is best. Should you buy it? The high price of this vacuum cleaner strikes off a large chunk of the customer base for a market like India. However, that doesn't take away the utility of this machine and makes it a superb vacuum cleaner for those who want to make cleaning easy and need one solution for most cleaning needs. Its powerful suction and ability to detect and remove microscopic dust are unmatched. Additionally, pet owners will find this extremely useful to pull their hair from carpets, sofas, and other surfaces. Don't buy it if you're expecting to mop and if you have a large house, as it dies in under an hour and takes close to five hours to charge. Unless, of course, you are okay with investing in an extra battery.
