The French-Ivorian, a former McKinsey consultant, launched a three-year turnaround program that resulted in the Swiss bank posting its first annual profit in four years in 2018.</p><p>Iqbal Khan, who was born in Pakistan and moved to Switzerland at the age of 12, spent 12 years as an auditor at EY. He joined Credit Suisse's wealth management division in 2013 and rose to CEO two years later. He oversaw an 80% increase in divisional profit and helped bring in upwards of $46 billion in net new assets between 2016 and 2018, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/bbe24f04-dfa2-11e9-9743-db5a370481bc">according to the Financial Times</a>.</p><p><strong>January 2019:</strong> Thiam hosts a cocktail party at his home in the tony Herrliberg area on the "gold coast" of Lake Zurich, according to the Financial Times. Khan and his wife - who bought the house next door, bulldozed it, then redeveloped it over the course of nearly two years - are among the guests. Thiam complained to Credit Suisse Chairman Urs Rohner about the disruptive construction work, the Financial Times reported.</p><p>After Khan and Thiam's partner squabble over some trees planted on the CEO's property, Khan and Thiam have an argument away from the other guests. Khan's wife has to separate them, Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reported.</p><p><strong>Spring and summer:</strong> Khan complains to Rohner and Credit Suisse's board about the incident, widening the rift between the two and creating an unpleasant working environment, the Financial Times reported.</p><p>Khan is allowed to quit with a shortened gardening leave period of three months. During meetings with UBS, Julius Baer, Goldman Sachs, and other prospective employers, he expresses a desire to recruit former Credit Suisse colleagues across structured trading, lending, relationship management and other functions, the Financial Times reported.</p><p><strong>July 1:</strong> Credit Suisse announces Khan is leaving the company. He makes the move after growing frustrated with his profile within the bank, number of public appearances, and a lack of assurances from Thiam and other executives about his potential to rise further up the ranks, according to the Financial Times.</p><p>"He's in a rush, wants a huge job and had become a bit frustrated because there's no room at the top here - Tidjane isn't going anywhere and he wasn't comfortable in his seat," a person familiar with the developments told the newspaper.</p><p><strong>August 29:</strong> UBS <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ubs-appoints-iqbal-khan-wealth-management-co-head-2019-8?r=US&amp;IR=T">announces</a> Khan will become its co-president of global wealth management on October 1. Pierre-Olivier Bouee, Credit Suisse's operating chief, orders the bank's security chief to begin observing Khan out of concern he may be planning to poach clients and former coworkers. Bouee's worries are elevated by the fact that Khan continues to socialize with key Credit Suisse employees.</p><p>Credit Suisse hires Investigo, a security firm, to keep tabs on Khan. Investigo assigns private detectives to trail Khan and identify everyone he meets.</p><p><strong>September 17:</strong> During a shopping trip, Khan spots and confronts one of his tails in downtown Zurich. He exits his car and photographs the license plate of the private investigator's vehicle. The investigator confronts him, asks him to stop, and tells Khan to hand over his phone. Khan shouts for police help, and the investigator departs.</p><p>Khan files a complaint with Zurich's public prosecutor, saying three men chased him and his wife through the streets of Zurich by car and on foot. He says things turned physical behind the Swiss National Bank, when the men tried to take his mobile phone as he was photographing them and their car.</p><p>However, the detective provides a sworn statement to Credit Suisse and authorities that he was alone that day, and Khan chased him, the Financial Times reported. The bank instructed the investigator to follow Khan only on weekdays from a suitable distance and take note of the people he meets, without breaking any criminal or traffic laws, according to a document seen by the newspaper.</p><p>S<strong>eptember 18:</strong> Credit Suisse halts its observation of Khan.</p><p><strong>September 23:</strong> Credit Suisse's board says it has appointed external consultants and lawyers to inquire whether executives signed off on the decision to hire private investigators and if the move was justified.</p><p>Zurich's public prosecutor's office confirms it has opened a criminal case for coercion and threat, and city police have made three arrests, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/2c48ed78-dee2-11e9-9743-db5a370481bc?desktop=true&amp;segmentId=7c8f09b9-9b61-4fbb-9430-9208a9e233c8#myft:notification:daily-email:content">the Financial Times reports</a>.</p><p><strong>September 24:</strong> An unnamed contractor who hired Investigo to trail Khan on behalf of Credit Suisse dies by suicide. A lawyer for Investigo later confirms the death to the Financial Times.</p><p><strong>September 26:</strong> Pressure mounts on Credit Suisse to address the scandal.</p><p>"It's something of extreme gravity; in Zurich it is becoming a time bomb and you can feel the panic," a major investor in the bank <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/bbe24f04-dfa2-11e9-9743-db5a370481bc">told the Financial Times</a>. "Both sides have been damaged, but especially Credit Suisse." </p><p>"We have said to the chairman and board they have to provide a clear outcome and explanation; whoever did wrong has to pay," the investor added.</p><p><strong>September 30:</strong> Inside Paradeplatz, a Swiss financial blog, reports the contractor's death by suicide. Credit Suisse's board meets to discuss the findings of an investigation into the spying scandal by Homburger, a law firm.</p><p><strong>October 1:</strong> Bouee, Credit Suisse's COO, resigns after Homburger finds he independently made the call to follow Khan. Spies, suicide, and a clash at a cocktail party - here's what we know about the scandal rocking Credit Suisse

<br />A few days ago, the <keyword id="2797629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Institute-of-Health-Metrics">Institute of Health Metrics</keyword> and Evaluation (IHME), a US-based research institute, published a report on the global prevalence of <keyword id="6355291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer">cancer</keyword>. The <a href="http://www.healthdata.org/news-release/increase-lifestyle-related-cancers-over-past-decade-spotlights-critical-need-prevention">report </a>found a large disparity between the incidence rates of cancer among developed and developing countries. <br /><br />The countries with the highest rates of cancer were Australia and New Zealand, with 743.8 and 542.8 new cases of cancer per 100,000 people in 2016. They were followed by the US, with 532.9 cases. Over 17.2 million cases of cancer were reported worldwide in 2016. <br /><br />More notably, the IHME’s analysis indicated that <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> ranked tenth among the countries with the lowest rate of cancer incidence in the world - with only 106.6 new cancer cases in 2016 for 100,000 members of its population. India was outranked by its regional neighbours - Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka - all of which boasted of lower cancer rates.<br /><br />These findings beg the question. For a country with such a large population, how are India’s rates of cancer so low? Is it an issue of genetics? Or is there something intrinsic to the Indian diet like turmeric that makes us less prone to cancer?<br /><br /><strong>It’s an issue of <keyword id="6355729" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="data">data</keyword> reporting</strong><br /><br />Interestingly, the list of countries with the lowest rate of cancer was topped by Syria, which had only 85 cases per 100,000 members of its population. Well, when you’re faced with the threat of being bombed on a regular basis, going to the doctor or reporting your cancer diagnosis seems like less of an urgency, doesn’t it?<br /><br />The fact that Syria tops the list could indicate why India even made the top 10 to begin with. The reporting of cancer cases in India leaves a lot to be desired. While we have <a href="http://ncdirindia.org/NCRP/index.aspx">a national cancer registry</a>, its most recent data seems to be from 2014. <br /><br />Further still, according to Dr Ajay Sharma, a New Delhi-based oncologist, record-keeping in hospitals, especially in smaller towns, is not upto the mark. “Data isn’t collated properly and as a result, a lot of India’s cancer cases aren’t reported,” Sharma says. <br /><br />Dr Sarika Gupta, a women’s cancer specialist at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, also disagreed with the IHME’s assessment of India. “We have the third-highest rate of female cancer cases in the world after China and the US,” Gupta says. She also added that the symptoms in more than half of India’s cancer patients go undetected due to a shortage of adequate <keyword id="6370536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="screening">screening</keyword> technology in rural or underdeveloped areas, or worse, a lack of awareness about the disease itself. <br /><br />According to <a href="http://www.ey.com/Publication/vwLUAssets/EY-Call-for-action-expanding-cancer-care-in-india/$FILE/EY-Call-for-action-expanding-cancer-care-in-india.pdf">a report by Ernst and Young</a> in 2015, there were only 2,700 mammograms, a breast cancer screening device, in India at the time - a fraction of the total number in the US. More surprisingly, there were only 120 PET-CT scanners, most of which were in Tier-1 cities.<br /><br /><strong>A larger problem</strong><br /><br />In addition to causing the under-reporting of cases, the lack of awareness about the disease translates into higher death rates. According to a study published in Lancet, a medical journal, in 2014, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/indias-cancer-cases-far-lower-than-those-in-the-west-yet-death-rate-higher/articleshow/62550136.cms">around 70% of India’s cancer cases</a> lead to death due to lack of medical resources as well as the fact that most people don’t seek medical treatment until the late-stage symptoms start manifesting themselves. <br /><br />The EY report found that while the cancer incidence rate in India was estimated to be at 94 cases per 100,000 people, the actual rate was somewhere between 150-200 cases due to the deficiencies in data collection and screening. <br /><br />It isn’t far-fetched to think that the reporting and detection problems experienced in India could also be seen in other developing countries. Hence, it feels incorrect to assume people in richer, developed countries are more prone to contracting cancer. They just have more avenues to detect it and these countries have the systems in place to report and collect this data. <br />

No, India’s rate of cancer incidence isn’t among the lowest in the world

Please don't let hate infect your heart," Jackson wrote. "This city MUST and WILL get better."</p><p>Jackson also alluded to the difficulties of being a black man and a police officer.</p><p>"I swear to God I love this city but I wonder if this city loves me. In uniform I get nasty hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat," he wrote. "I've experienced so much in my short life and the past 3 days have tested me to the core."</p><p>Jackson's father-in-law, Lonnie Jordan, described him as a "gentle giant" who was "always about peace," according to <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_POLICE_SHOT_BATON_ROUGE_THE_LATEST?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT">The Associated Press</a>. Baton Rouge police officer wrote a heartbreaking Facebook post 2 weeks before he was killed

The savviest discretionary managers are diving into the private markets to boost their returns. </li><li>Over the next 10 years, insiders, consultancies, and banks all expect this migration to less efficient private markets to accelerate.</li><li>With fewer public companies and an IPO slowdown, the private market opportunities for hedge funds like Tiger Global and Coatue have become more attractive, even as sky-high valuations have plagued investors that dove into companies like WeWork.</li><li>Investors, according to a recently released note from Carlyle, are leaving their public markets exposure to quant funds and passive indices, and searching for alpha in the less efficient private markets. </li><li>"The lines are blurring between hedge funds and private equity, and I expect the industries over time to converge," said Don Steinbrugge, founder of consultancy AgeCroft Partners.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>. </li></ul><p>The smart money is getting out of the public markets.</p><p>Private equity, once an obscure part of the alternatives space, will have more assets than the better-known hedge fund industry by 2023, according to Preqin. Institutional investors, meanwhile, are shifting more of their portfolios to the private markets, according to EY, in part due to underperformance of active managers in the public markets.</p><p>With 2020 quickly approaching, Business Insider is looking ahead and polling experts to learn what Wall Street will look like in 2030. Over the next 10 years, insiders, consultancies, and banks all expect this migration to less efficient private markets will continue and accelerate.</p><p>Passive investing, which topped half of all mutual funds assets for the first time in 2019, will only continue to rise, they say, and finding an edge in the public markets will become nearly impossible thanks to advances in computing power and data-processing.</p><p>We've already seen the effects of this sea change on value investors, who have struggled to make money using a strategy pioneered by legends like Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett. In 10 years' time, nearly all big discretionary managers could see a public market void of obvious plays. </p><h2>Managers are already diving into the private markets</h2><p>Already top stock-picking hedge funds - managers who made their names and their billions with concentrated bets on well-known, public companies - are seeing the light.</p><p>Viking is growing its private markets team after putting <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viking-global-invested-107-million-in-druva-in-recent-round-2019-8">more than a half of a billion dollars to work in the private companies during the first half of this year</a>, while Tiger Global and Coatue have become some of the biggest early-stage investors. Point72 and Two Sigma have built out venture capital arms, and Lone Pine <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lone-pine-just-told-investors-that-its-sticking-to-growth-stocks-2019-11">is opening up another of its funds to private investments</a>.</p><p>One of the top-performing hedge funds this year, Mudrick Capital, can thank its large stake in Juul for its success, though that may be in peril thanks to the rash of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/vape-bans-threaten-hedge-funds-800-million-investment-in-njoy-2019-9-1028555785">vaping-related deaths in the United States</a>. Billionaire Joseph Edelman's Perceptive Advisors closed its first venture capital fund with $210 million from institutional investors and family offices, the firm announced in December.</p><p>"The demand for less liquid securities will grow over time as more and more view it as an area that investment firms have an edge and where high returns can be generated relative to liquid markets," said Don Steinbrugge, founder of consultancy AgeCroft Partners.</p><p>"The lines are blurring between hedge funds and private equity, and I expect the industries over time to converge."</p><p>Mutual funds are even getting in on the private market action, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sec-steps-up-scrutiny-of-private-stakes-held-by-funds-2019-7?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+clusterstock+%28ClusterStock%29">though with a close eye from the Securities and Exchange Commission</a>. Fidelity is in Juul, WeWork, and Airbnb, and T. Rowe Price and Franklin Templeton have invested in unicorns as well.</p><p>Active managers have turned to the private space for several reasons - like exploding valuations and the shrinking roster of public companies - but the biggest is that it's just hard to make money in an arena that's becoming more efficient everyday.</p><h2>'It's much harder to beat a computer'</h2><p>Passively managed mutual fund assets have shot past their actively managed peers; an IMF report states that the total assets tracking an index reached $4.25 trillion this year.</p><p>Beating the market is a zero-sum game for active investors, said Jamie Dinan, founder and chief executive of York Capital Management, at the Project Punch Card conference in December. The rise of passive, he said, has upped the competition because it took away clueless investors that didn't know what they were doing.</p><p>"It's much harder to beat a computer or a really intelligent person," he said. </p><p>And quants are finding new areas to exploit much quicker now thanks to increased computing power, advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and an explosion of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-funds-using-filters-buy-alternative-data-2019-7?IR=T&amp;_ga=2.154692795.2062023948.1575391370-661281114.1574274715">new, alternative data streams that have quickly become a necessary cost for managers</a> hoping to keep their heads above water.</p><p>Investors in hedge funds are concerned that they're paying large fees to get the same type of returns that retail investors can get for free - and that hedge funds in the public space are simply following each other.</p><p>Crowding has gotten worse the last three quarters, according to Goldman Sachs' hedge fund tracker. Amazon, Facebook, and Alphabet make up 5% of all hedge funds' long portfolios, Goldman says, and those three stocks have been among the top five positions in hedge funds for the last 14 quarters.</p><p>And public market options are shrinking by the day, with mergers and buyouts - like Elliott and Francisco Partners <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-12-11/francisco-partners-elliott-said-to-be-in-talks-to-buy-logmein">recent discussions</a> to take LogMeIn private for $4 billion - outpacing IPOs.</p><p>The private markets are flooded with money, while the biggest unicorns have struggled out of the gate once public, or didn't even make it to the IPO, like WeWork. Now companies like Palantir are pushing back their public offerings.</p><p>For underfunded pensions, the private markets are the only place to make eye-popping returns once common of hedge funds.</p><p>A Natixis survey of 500 institutional investors managing more than $15 trillion found that 37% are increasing their allocation to private debt next year while 28% are bumping up their allocation to private equity. The top talent is going with the dollars too, as hedge funds are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-funds-and-private-equity-battling-over-each-others-talent-2019-6?IR=T&amp;_ga=2.128231567.2062023948.1575391370-661281114.1574274715">finding tough competition to reel in</a> for the smartest investors from the private side. </p><h2>'We aren't going back'</h2><p>Dev Kantesaria, CEO and founder of stock-picking hedge fund Valley Forge Asset Management, believes the story of the next ten years will be the impact of "relentless market share gain by passive strategies."</p><p>The bloated hedge fund industry - which has thousands of funds chasing similar trades - is expected to shrink, and Kantesaria expects those assets from closed hedge funds to flow into passive products.</p><p>"Once you're indexing, you don't get those investors back very easily," he said knowingly: Kantesaria serves on the board of a hospital that recently put a good chunk of its endowment into a Vanguard index fund, and "we aren't going back."</p><p>The size of individual hedge funds that are used to beating the overall market may be holding them back, says Chris Walvoord, global head of hedge fund research and portfolio management at Aon.</p><p>"A lot of traditional hedge fund firms are becoming more institutionalized. They can't do the things they used to," he said.</p><p>"Investors are still in the process of getting heads around what hedge funds are able to do at certain sizes."</p><p>Walvoord is not completely dismissing active managers trying to outperform in equities - "there will still be opportunities for people to look in the nooks and crannies" - but in 2030, it will be tougher.</p><p>A recent note from Carlyle's global head of research Jason Thomas states unicorns' preference of private money over the public markets and the lack of young, growing public companies have created a "new paradigm for portfolio management."</p><p>"Investors rely on private markets for 'alpha,' while passive allocations deliver more efficient and targeted 'beta,'" he wrote.</p><p>This shift might force investors to rethink the term alternative investments.</p><p>"Rather than an 'alternative' asset class, private capital represents the 'active' portion of institutional portfolios, responsible for diversification, excess returns, and important signals about changes in the broader investment opportunity set," Thomas wrote. </p>            <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-warren-buffett-billionaires-donate-money-2017-10">On Giving Tuesday, see how Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are changing the world like no other humans in history</a></h3>                    <iframe class="bijwplayerclass" src="https://content.jwplatform.com/players/M78g9qx1-CEZHWCBG.html" width="100%" height="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" style="margin:0px;"></iframe>

While improving them won't solve the issue at large, looking at their problems is helpful.</li><li>These conferences can be dominated by jargon. The subject reads, "You are invited … "</p><p>Your stomach flutters with anticipation. <em>What could this possibly be about</em>? </p><p>You open it up to learn … your boss is sending you to a "women's conference."</p><p>Every year, hundreds of women-focused business conferences are held across the globe. This is great, right? At first blush, it certainly feels great to be selected for one. </p><p><em>Wow! They must think a lot of me to choose me to participate!</em></p><p><em>Awesome! Who will I be able to mix and mingle with?</em></p><p><em>(Secretly) What will I wear? I need to stand out. </em></p><p>But pretty soon reality sets in.</p><p><em>Hang on. I'm already slammed. This is going to throw another monkey-wrench in my schedule.</em></p><p><em>Wait, why is Janice invited? She leaves every day at 4:00.</em></p><p><em>So, what are all the men doing that day?</em></p><p><em>What exactly are the chances that I'll be volunteered to help organize this thing?</em></p><p>Women's business conferences are a noble idea. If you've been to one, it's hard not to be in awe of the passion, sophistication, and attention to detail demonstrated by the organizers and attendees. </p><p>But if there are so many amazing women's conferences, why is gender diversity still such a massive issue in the corporate workplace?</p><p>Obviously, this is a complicated question. Improving women's conferences isn't a silver bullet, but considering how they miss the mark can shed some light on the problem as a whole.  </p><p>My podcast cohost and I recently drew up a list of all the things we've generally disliked about the over 25 women's conferences we've collectively attended. Here they are:</p><h2>1. They are too politically correct and vanilla. There simply isn't enough plain speak and authentic, hard-earned perspective.  </h2><p>Suggesting that women's conferences should be less politically correct immediately brings to mind a <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/women-ernst-young-how-to-dress-act-around-men_n_5da721eee4b002e33e78606a">recent HuffPost article</a> that shared an insider look at a particularly egregious (and politically incorrect) conference held by Ernst &amp; Young. </p><p>When I read this article, I gasped. And then laughed. The gist of it was a completely ludicrous education about how to rise in your career by working within the gender stereotypes of the 1960s: Eschew anything masculine (but don't flaunt your body), approach men deferentially, avoid being assertive, and above all, avoid being authentic. </p><p>This is not the kind of political incorrectness we need. </p><p>Instead, what we need is less jargon and more real talk. We also need to laugh more; we face a lot of ridiculous things in the average work day, and sometimes simply laughing together about it helps us get through it all.  </p><p>Cut the crap. No more phrases that have been done to death such as "lean in," "executive presence," "speak up," etc. These are all solid ideas, mind you, but they've become meaningless with overuse. For example, the term "executive presence" infers that women have to change who they are to succeed. The result?  Many of the most qualified women decide to opt out of the bigger roles. Women need authentic examples, preferably interesting ones, not buzzwords.</p><h2>2. There are too many professional facilitators and consultants and too few women who have actually been in the trenches</h2><p>Consultants have their place, and conferences definitely need facilitators to start - and keep - the balls rolling. But relying on academic advice from people who have never personally navigated the landmines of rising through the corporate ranks leaves a lot of expertise on the table. </p><p>Conferences need to do more than pay lip service to the idea that women can be leaders by allowing them to actually lead. Encourage them to share their experiences, their ideas, and their solutions. Another common issue with these conferences: Focusing on problems women are assumed to face without enough timely, tactical, or tangible advice on how to solve them. </p><p>If we want women to be leaders, we must make sure that the conferences aimed at that goal are interactive and offer opportunities to put those skills to use.</p><h2>3. Organizing conferences is often a time suck for the very people they are supposed to be supporting </h2><p>Too often, organizing a women's conference falls to a woman who is already working her butt off in a leadership position. And although helping each other rise is a noble and worthy goal, the women leading the charge are generally forced to shoehorn the planning into an already tight schedule filled with all the other responsibilities of the job. One wonders: How many male executives spend hours on end organizing events for other men? </p><p>According to McKinsey's latest <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/gender-equality/women-in-the-workplace-2019">"Women in the Workplace" study</a>, companies' commitment to gender diversity has gone up 13% since 2015. However, only half of employees think that gender diversity is a priority in their company. Could this be because it is left to women alone to lead the charge?</p><h2>4. The conferences are too darn formal</h2><p>Generally, a women's business conference looks and feels like a conference designed for a very uptight, stuffy, unapproachable man. Everything - from the agenda to the seating - screams button up and mind your manners. </p><p>Is this really an environment that fosters the authenticity and vulnerability required to bring your best self to bear? We think not. Why not customize the experience to the attendees? What's wrong with comfy couches, bean bag chairs, or (gasp) yoga pants?</p><p>To be fair, many icebreakers are not formal. In fact, they can be cheesy and sometimes downright offensive. This isn't true across the board, but we've definitely experienced some doozies. Women may prefer comfortable clothes and humor, but we aren't children. Drop the dumb games. </p><h2>5. Women's conferences only include, well, women </h2><p>Though the intention behind female-only conferences is good, they still perpetuate the myth that women need to learn how to behave in order to become leaders. This is simply not true. The same leadership skills that work for men work for women as well. </p><p>We need conferences designed to challenge the idea that there is one right style of leadership - and that that winning style can only be achieved by straight white men. Yes, women must be included in these conferences, but so must leadership. How can we drive change without all the leadership in the room?</p><p>So what do we do?</p><h2>Don't try to change women for the job. Instead, enable them to change the job. </h2><p>Though the EY conference is an <em>extreme</em> example, it highlights one of the biggest issues we have. We give advice to women focused on how to act just like those before them - whether male or female. For some reason, we believe there is only one way to be in order to be successful. That couldn't be further from the truth.</p><p>When I was initially tapped for my first corporate executive position, I actually said, "No thank you." I feared I'd have to become someone I'm not. I feared I would have to compromise my family, my health, and even my identity to be successful. </p><p>It took a while to realize that I have unique qualities that I could exploit (humor, humility, and the ability to inspire) and that the things that I wasn't so good at (extensive travel, detailed operations) could be addressed by strengthening the team around me.</p><p>I love the <a href="https://thriveglobal.com/stories/abby-wambach-you-dont-have-to-be-perfect-to-be-a-great-leader/">quote by soccer legend Abby Wambach</a>, "Imperfect men have been empowered and permitted to run the world since the beginning of time. It's time for imperfect women to grant themselves permission to join them."</p><p>We have got to stop pretending that there is a linear formula for being a successful leader. Instead, we must help women celebrate and exploit their unique, positive qualities.</p><h2>Go ahead, hold women's conferences, but shake them up … significantly </h2><p>In our perfect world, there would be no need for women's conferences or talk of gender parity. We're making progress toward this goal: The <a href="https://womenintheworkplace.com/">number of women rising to a top CEO spot has increased 24%</a> over the last five years. But obviously, we're not there yet. </p><p>So, until we arrive at the nirvana that is true gender diversity (of all kinds, mind you), women's conferences offer a unique opportunity for us to learn from each other. However, that only happens if the women attending and leading are allowed to show up as their authentic selves. </p><p>Showcase speakers that tell it like it is. Give real-life actionable examples of women who've crushed their careers without selling their souls, and play some fun music while you're at it. </p><p>A few weeks ago, my <a href="https://www.bauthenticinc.com/podcast">podcast cohost</a> and I experimented with something like this. Imagine a conference that kicks off with dancing and lip synching into a room packed to the gills with high-powered and successful women in the financial industry. </p><p>Not sounding so bold? </p><p>One of us was wearing a bedazzled tracksuit, and we may have had props, parody videos, and cheese cubes. And, it wasn't just a show. We got real down and dirty about the things that helped us rise into executive positions. The crowd left incredibly inspired to be more of themselves, both in work and in their personal lives.</p><p>If we can't shake up a conference, how can we hope to shake up the workplace?</p><p>It is time we start acknowledging that we must get much more creative in our approach to gender diversity if we ever want to have a shot at reaching parity.</p><p>We need to start asking the tough questions:</p><ul><li><em>What is working and what isn't? </em></li><li><em>What bold moves do we need to make to go from looking at gender diversity as a problem to solve and embracing it as an organic source of strength, especially in the corporate world?</em></li></ul><p>Whether you're a decision-maker or low down on the totem pole, one thing is clear.
