New Delhi: Steel companies in the country are likely to face margin pressure in the third quarter of FY25 as muted steel prices compress spreads, according to a report by Axis Securities. The report stated that the weak demand in China and higher exports from the country have been identified as key factors behind the decline in steel prices. The report highlighted that <keyword id="24048830" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-steel-exports" source="keywords">Chinese steel exports</keyword> reached 92 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) between January and October 2024, marking a 22 per cent year-on-year increase. This has led to an oversupply in the global market, weighing down prices domestically. It said "Weak Chinese domestic demand along with higher Chinese exports has led to a decline in steel prices in India. Chinese steel exports from Jan'24 to Oct'24 stood at 92 MTPA, up 22 per cent YoY" In India, the average price of hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel in the trader's market in Mumbai fell by 8 per cent year-on-year and 6 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 51,802 per tonne in the second quarter of FY25. Spot prices have further declined to Rs 49,000 per tonne, 5 per cent lower than the Q2FY25 average. The report also noted some signs of recovery in China's residential property sector, with increased transactions in major cities following policy measures aimed at boosting demand. However, challenges remain, as the three-month moving average of year-to-date floor space declined by 19 per cent year-on-year in September 2024, remaining in negative territory. It said "China's residential property sector is showing some signs of improvement with the transactions in major cities rising after recent policy measures introduced to boost demand". On the global front, the report noted that the probability of a 25-basis point rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in its December 2024 meeting has fallen to 58.9 per cent, down from 76.8 per cent in October 2024, owing to strong economic data from the US. Additionally, China has removed a 13 per cent export rebate on aluminum and copper, effective December 1, 2024, in response to anticipated tariff measures by the new US administration. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges and potential shifts in the global and domestic steel and metals markets.

As most countries moved to sanction Russian energy over its war with Ukraine, Asia instead, decided to snap up <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/china-india-half-russia-crude-oil-exports-sanctions-2022-6">discounted Russian oil</a> in which India and China now make up for about 50% of the country's seaborne <keyword id="11896879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil" source="Orion">oil</keyword> exports. Russian crude oil is priced at much cheaper prices to other grades on the spot market due to sanctions and boycotts, but energy prices have skyrocketed this year, boosting sales for the country. According to a <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2022-06-01/has-sanctioning-russia-worked-oil-gas-sales-put-285b-in-putin-s-pocket">Bloomberg Economics</a> report, sales of Russian oil and gas are forecasted to rise to $285 billion in 2022 which is a 20% increase than the country's 2021 takings. But as the country brings in huge profits, Russian flows of seaborne crude exports have fallen more than 15% on a weekly and four-week average basis from the highs it witnessed in May, per Bloomberg. During that month, Russia's oil export revenues <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russian-oil-export-revenues-surge-may-iea-energy-prices-ukraine-2022-6">jumped 11% to reach $20 billion</a>. On average, Russia's crude shipments in the four weeks leading up to July 1 hit 3.46 million barrels a day, down from a peak of 3.75 million barrels a day it reached in the four weeks leading up to April 29. Shipments to Asian countries other than China and India have essentially dried up, the outlet reported, with just the odd cargo heading to Japan and South Korea, reflecting a broad decline in demand. The region accounts for about 52% of Russia's total seaborne exports, down from a high of 63% in the four weeks to mid-April. Russia has already lost much of the European market for its seaborne crude after Brussels announced last month that it would cut imports of Russian oil by 90% by the end of 2022. The <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-oil-production-decline-18-percent-2023-eu-ban-eia-2022-6">US Energy Information Administration said</a> Russia's oil output could slide 18% by the end of next year. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have even considered <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-opec-exclusion-production-quota-agreement-oil-price-supply-experts-2022-6">removing Russia</a> from an oil-production agreement after the country missed its output target. An OPEC official told the Wall Street Journal that it made little sense for Russia to have to stick to quotas that it could not meet.

Russia is cashing in on soaring oil prices right now, but it may not be able to for much longer — its exports are drying up

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Red Sea tumult is raising the floor on oil prices, which would be lower absent the shipping disruptions, experts say. </li><li>Weakness in the market from China's slowdown and questions around OPEC's strategy are keeping prices low. </li></ul>The attacks on ships in the Red Sea are a big geopolitical headache, and an economic one, too, as the chaos bleeds into markets by disrupting shipping flows and stoking inflationary pressure.So why aren't oil prices reflecting the tension?The answer is: they are, and the Red Sea attacks by Houthi militants are the only reason crude is trading as high as it is, experts say. The impact of the disruptions is hard to discern because of all the forces pulling oil prices down, analysts say, and oil would otherwise be trading much lower otherwise. If the Middle East angst wasn't a concern for markets, crude oil prices would be trading at around $70-$75 a barrel, analysts said on Wednesday when Western Texas Intermediate crude was at $77 a barrel. (Prices have since tumbled to $72 after an inaccurate Al-Jazeera headline about a ceasefire in Gaza.)"Even though it doesn't look like it's going a lot higher, it's supporting the downside of what is looking like a little bit of fundamental weakness," oil analyst Rebecca Babin, from CIBC Wealth Management, said.That weakness stems from slowing demand in China and a surplus of oil in the market as non-OPEC nations keep pumping more crude. The big question of whether the group will be able to unwind their cuts and keep member nations compliant — Angola quit the group in December — is also weighing on prices, Babin said."Instead of saying 'Why isn't [the price] higher?' it's really saying, 'Well, if we didn't have this, we'd probably be a lot lower,'" she explained.In an updated note on Thursday, Babin noted that a confirmed ceasefire could cause a knee-jerk reaction in oil prices to $70 a barrel for WTI crude."Market reaction to potential ceasefire immediately removed increased cost associated with shipping / insurance around the Red Sea ($2-3)," she wrote. "The market was not pricing in a significant reduction in supply due to escalation in the middle east but was assigning higher shipping costs to the commodity."Beyond that, it's important to note that the shipping chaos in the Red Sea isn't actually knocking barrels of oil off the market or leading to any kind of supply shortage. That's another reason prices haven't shot up."Supply technically hasn't been disrupted yet," Hunter Kornfeind from Rapidan Energy said. "Transit times are longer, which is why prices have rallied a little bit, but we're not seeing a million barrels a day of exports offline. So I think that's why it's been largely muted so far."Brent crude, the international benchmark for prices, would be trading for lower per barrel without the geopolitical chaos, Kornfeind explained (about $70 to $75 a barrel when prices were at $82 a barrel on Wednesday).All else equal (China's slowdown, OPEC concerns, and other fundamental pressures), if a cease-fire isn't reached, Babin said prices of Brent crude could go up to $90 a barrel.

"Growing concerns about disruptions to Russian energy supplies are pushing oil and gas prices up sharply," said Commerzbank's Carsten Fritsch.European natural gas prices soared by 36% to 119 euros ($133.43) per megawatt-hour at Monday's open, and was still trading at that level at last check, Fritsch said."The marked price increases are due to the sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, which were tightened significantly again at the weekend," Fritsch said.Moreover, the EU is also set to <a href="https://twitter.com/vonderleyen/status/1497696378461593605">freeze Russia's central bank assets</a> in the region, making it impossible for the establishment to liquidate foreign exchange assets.Goldman Sachs noted the exclusion of some Russian banks from the SWIFT system creates hurdles, but not barriers to commodity trading. What's key is that some banks still do have access to the system, meaning there are likely carve-outs for energy and food transactions, Goldman analysts said."The absence of SWIFT intermediation would, for example, leave for slower payments and the rise in account receivables for Russian commodity exporters (rather than a complete halt in financial transfers)," they wrote Sunday.But some analysts expect Russia to retaliate to this latest round of restrictive measures by either reducing or completely suspending energy shipments to Europe."The sanctions and the exodus of Western oil companies are likely in the medium to long term to result in lower Russian oil and gas production because they will make investments in maintaining production and developing new sources significantly more difficult," Fritsch said.While Russia's invasion of Ukraine has left <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword> reeling, the OPEC+ group, which includes Russia, is due to meet on March 2. Oil and gas prices jump after Western allies bring in tougher sanctions on Russia that could choke its exports

Total export by all nations is about 28-30% of the world GDP. </li><li><keyword id="6393721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indirect-taxes" source="Orion">Indirect taxes</keyword> such as <keyword id="14212793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mineral-taxes" source="Orion">mineral taxes</keyword>, <keyword id="6356916" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excise-duty" source="Orion">excise duty</keyword>, export duty etc., must be levied in a rational manner to remove the cascading effect. </li><li>Ban on the export of agro produce shall immediately affect the income of about 45-50% of the population employed in the farming sector. </li></ul>During 2021-22, India exported goods and services worth $669.7 billion (22.8% of GDP) as against $538.6 billion which was at about 20% of GDP during 2017-18. This calls for a sincere applause. However, India should not become complacent on the export front. Total export by all nations is about 28-30% of the world GDP. In 2012-13, India exported goods and services to the tune of 25.4% of GDP. Therefore, India must boost exports up to 28-30% of its GDP. That will recover the loss of GDP during Covid years and ensure consistent growth in the years to come. For this, the cost of basic inputs such as capital, energy, minerals and logistics must be reduced to become globally competitive. More so, indirect taxes such as mineral taxes, excise duty, export duty etc., must be levied in a rational manner to remove the cascading effect. That will boost exports and also arrest ‘cost push’ inflation. Recently, to control inflation, India has banned exports of few agro products and levied 50% export duty on iron ore, 45% on iron ore pellets and 15% on steel. However, current inflation in India is not due to shortage in supply but due to ‘cost push factor’. The export curbs need review since; it will impact GDP growth. Yes, in case of shortage in supply, curbing of exports in a calibrated manner may be chosen as a last option. Ban on the export of agro produce shall immediately affect the income of about 45-50% of the population employed in the farming sector. That will aggravate the unemployment problem. Advance estimate of production and consumption with predictable export policy shall enhance agro production without causing high inflation. India’s steel capacity utilization will be affected by the duty In India, steel production capacity is much higher than the domestic demand. More so, the addition of new capacities is in the pipeline. Sudden levy of 15% export duty shall adversely affect capacity utilization and on-going investment in new capacity. The growth of public income (GDP) and investment rate shall decline; that India can’t afford. It is agreed that; in the past one or two years, steel prices have sky-rocketed and its impact is felt by the entire economy. But such inflated prices are due to high jumps in the price of coal and iron ore; that should be resolved. This will be the right choice over curbing exports by imposing taxes. Thermal coal prices must be brought back to 2019 levels The price of thermal coal must be restored almost to near to 2019-20 level which has now increased by almost three times, mainly due to stagnant production in past years clubbed with the high price of imported coal. Its major impact is on the core sector such as power, steel, metal and cements which travels to the entire economy. For this, India must immediately increase coal production by minimum 20% through regulatory easements. Incremental production may be incentivised through fiscal tools. India has sufficient reserves of non-coking thermal coal but has limited reserves of coking coal. Steel industry uses both types of coal. For reducing import dependency, future capacity in steel may be diverted to the non-coking coal based technology on the best effort basis. The sales of sub-grade iron ore Iron ore is the principal raw material for steel making. For reducing its price, the mineral taxes in the shape of royalty and auction premium should be levied on the basic price (excluding mineral taxes) instead of IBM price (including mineral taxes). More so, IBM price is not consistent with actual sale price in most cases. Hence, mineral taxes should be levied on the actual and basic sale price instead of IBM price similar to GST and excise duty. Prevailing system is causing a compounding effect of the mineral taxes. The price of iron ore has inflated to record high levels. Same is the case with other minerals including coal. The aforementioned method of taxation is a great impediment in selling low/sub-grade iron ore in particular. After paying mineral taxes, the basic sale price comes to below production cost and at times, to a negative sale price. Hence, the miners are reluctant in selling low/sub-grade iron ore. As a consequence, new beneficiation plants are not coming up as per economic needs of the nation. Hence, more than 300 million tons of low/sub-grade iron ore is accumulated in the mines causing wastage of precious mineral resources. By and large, India must choose appropriate policy tools for controlling inflation without sacrificing exports and GDP. For intermediate products like iron ore, a calibrated curb in export may be chosen keeping a balance between the exports, GDP and inflation. India’s exports have a long way to go and the curbs are not helping

Accordingly, domestic yarn production increased in January 2021, led by a <keyword id="10797750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="strong-export">strong export</keyword> and moderate domestic demand during December 2020. "While yarn production was substantially lower on a YoY basis up to 8MFY21, exports increased by higher single digits YoY due to a healthy demand from neighbouring countries," "China's demand for Indian yarn resumed to <keyword id="9311631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pre-covid">pre-Covid</keyword> levels during November-December 2020, as against a volume drop from Bangladesh and Vietnam during same period." In January 2021, cotton yarn prices increased 15 <keyword id="10797749" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="per-cent-mom">per cent MoM</keyword> and 30 per cent YoY, resulting in higher gross margins. "The higher cotton yarn demand is attributed to the global supply curbs on Xinjiang region (China) cotton, which is benefitting Indian domestic spinners." "While exports are likely to moderate during January-February 2021 with likely shutdown of mills ahead of Chinese new year, demand resumption is likely by March 2021." Consequently, cotton prices surged by 7-10 per cent MoM during January 2021, led by a strong export demand for cotton yarn. "The international prices rose by 13-17 per cent YoY, led by the buoyant China demand for US cotton, which is having a rub-off effect on cheaper Indian cotton prices." However, apparel exports declined in December 2020, after recovering over September-November 2020 on a YoY basis due to the impact of a second wave of Covid-19 in the US and Europe. "This would also impact the near-term order book position of ready-made garment exporters for the upcoming fashion season." "During November 2020, knitted apparels volumes remained stagnant with realisations gaining by high single digit yoy basis; on the contrary, woven apparels volumes increased by 8.2 per cent and realisations fell substantially yoy basis. During 2020, India exports to the US fell 20-25 per cent YoY in both volume and value terms." Rising exports to China surge domestic cotton yarn prices, says India Ratings and Research

(Eds: Updates with more details) New Delhi, Mar 2 () Export of all varieties of onion will be free from March 15, the government announced on Monday, lifting around six-month-old curbs on shipments of the bulb following a correction in prices and improvement in local supplies. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) also announced removing the minimum export price (MEP) for outward shipments of the commodity. "The export of all varieties of onions has been made free without any condition of letter of credit and MEP, with effect from March 15, 2020," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification. Farmers in several parts of Nashik district in Maharashtra agitated over falling onion prices, with an official informing that average per quintal price for Monday was Rs 1,450 at Lasalgaon, the country's largest market for the kitchen staple.Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the decision will help boost the income of farmers.The government last week decided to lift ban on export of onions in view of projected sharp fall in prices due to bumper rabi crop.In September 2019, the government banned onion exports and also imposed an MEP of USD 850 per tonne. The move came after prices started skyrocketing due to supply-demand mismatch.In December last year, the prices hit Rs 160 per kg in certain parts of the country. The prices are hovering at around Rs 30 per kg at present.Expected monthly harvest in March is over 40 lakh MT compared to 28.4 lakh MT last year, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had tweeted on Wednesday.There was shortage of onion as kharif crop was adversely affected due to excess rains and floods in key producing states, including Maharashtra.Currently, the arrival of rabi (winter) crop of onion has begun in small quantities and would increase from mid-March onwards.Exports of onion are expected to arrest sharp the fall in domestic prices. A rolling four-week average shows that shipments are down by 480,000 barrels a day since the middle of last month, per Bloomberg data. As a result, Moscow's revenue from export duties <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-oil-exports-fall-5-weeks-straight-asian-imports-drop-2022-7">fell from $168 million to $155 million.</a> It's worth noting that Asia's biggest oil refiner<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/china-russia-oil-biggest-refiner-cut-purchases-russian-crude-2022-7"> dialed back its purchases of Russian crude</a>, since it's unwilling to match the higher prices that customers in India and elsewhere are offering. Russia just slashed gas exports to Europe (again). Here's what to know.

From May 15, the <keyword id="12266" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nepal" source="Orion">Nepal</keyword> government will increase regular public holidays to two days in a week in an effort to cut the consumption of <keyword id="31786" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fuels" source="Orion">fuels</keyword> whose prices have skyrocketed in recent months in the country, a cabinet minister said. "A cabinet meeting on April 26 decided to implement the two-day public holidays in a week effective from May 15 on a trial basis," <keyword id="12005292" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gyanendra-bahadur-karki" source="Orion">Gyanendra Bahadur Karki</keyword>, minister for communication and information technology, told reporters. Currently, Nepal is implementing a one-day public holiday in a week on Saturday, the new rule adds Sunday as an extra off-day, reports <keyword id="106387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xinhua-news-agency" source="Orion">Xinhua news agency</keyword>. As per the cabinet decision, the five-day work hours will be rescheduled to 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., from the existing office hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Earlier, Nepal's <keyword id="6358156" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-bank" source="Orion">central bank</keyword> had advised the government to implement two-day public holidays to reduce the consumption of fuels on the grounds that public mobility is reduced substantially during holidays. Fuels are the largest import item for Nepal, accounting for over 14 per cent of the total merchandise imports in the first eight months of the current fiscal year that began in mid-July 2021, according to the <keyword id="1953841" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="trade-and-export-promotion-centre" source="Orion">Trade and Export Promotion Centre</keyword>. As in other parts of the world, Nepal has seen the prices of fuels hike in recent months over the Russia-Ukraine conflict and other factors. Meanwhile, Nepal's gross foreign exchange reserves had decreased by 18.5 percent to $9.58 billion in mid-March, from $11.75 billion at the beginning of the current fiscal year, according to central bank statistics. In response to falling forex reserves, the government has imposed a ban on the import of some products, and the fuel allowance for government bodies has been cut by 20 per cent until the end of the current fiscal year. In the late 1990s, Nepal had experimented with two-day weekly holidays with a view to increasing the efficiency and productivity of government employees. The decision was then rolled back a few months later. The ABF substrate shortage is expected to recede after mid-2022, helping boost the production of graphics cards. One of the major reasons for this is that manufacturers have Unimicron and NanYa are building additional factories to meet the increased demand. The prices of graphics cards are expected to further come down in the coming months. So, if you have been waiting to get your hands on a GPU, you just need to wait for some more time.
